Shocking Typography Series Designed with Human Features
This surprisingly realistic series of human-inspired typography is quite shocking. Created by creative director JC Debroize, each unnaturally bent arrangement features a letter of the alphabet designed with human characteristics including skin, oddly placed hair, and eyeballs peering out unexpectedly from the curves and bends of each shape. However, once you get past the initial surprise that eyeballs are staring back at you, viewers can start to appreciate the fine details, the extraordinary textures, and the originality of the series.
Debroize, part of graphic design studio Kerozen, first created the shapes with modeling clay and then developed the incredibly detailed, flesh-based letters in Photoshop. Based off of the seven members of the design team, Human Type spells out the company name. “We shot pictures of the letters and of the design team’s faces. Then I made a mapping of skin textures on the letters with Photoshop and added the hair and the eyes," Debroize elaborates. "It was not a problem to show an unflattering image of us. We laughed a lot making this.”

Black Underwear
Nude week here at the studio had me wondering why I fancied black underwear so much.
Then it clicked. It was this quote from the movie “10 Things I Hate About You”:
“You don’t buy black lingerie unless you want someone to see it.”
That really stuck with me. Now, 15 years later, my unmentionables drawer is filled with near exclusively black underwear of every kind. Apparently, I really want to be seen in my knickers…

Vertigo-Inducing Photos of a Daredevil Hanging Off Ledges
Moscow-based photographer and daring rooftopper Kirill Oreshkin (aka kirill_opex) documents each of his adventurous and extremely dangerous feats as he manages to climb to the top of his city's towering structures and dangle off the edge, hundreds of meters in the air. Like so many other young rooftoppers (including his friend Mustang Wanted), there is no safety net or harness for the Russian thrill-seeker, only his camera and a rush of adrenaline.
With a fire in his belly, Oreshkin's penchant for urban scaling has led him to perilous heights and yet the young daredevil appears stoic in each shot—even while he is gripping onto a ledge with one hand! Rather than showing any hint of fear or remorse, the young man performs his life-threatening stunts with an unaffected and unbothered expression. One has to wonder what the ultimate incentive is for Oreshkin, other than capturing unique selfies and living to share the vertigo-inducing images.

Elaksi – “Want You”
Catarinamfialhovozinhas <3
This young dude, Elaksi from Helsinki, has been building a nice little story for himself with a number of quality tunes dropping over the last six months or so. His latest track to drop is "Want You," and it's got some sparkling ear candy vibes that should be perfect to get your weekend started proper. Especially to all those spots all over the map that are getting bombarded with snow and the overall winter flex. Lots of low end to make your subs rattle a bit, but the flip of that vocal sample is that warm electric blanket wrapping all around you for that quick warm up. This one is for the bassheads that are also into cuffing season. Turn up...the thermostat that is.

Cyril Hahn & Javeon – “Breaking”
At some point we're going to look back and say "damn, PMR you were one of the best." Breaking massive talent after massive talent, PMR's 2014 looks to only be continuation of this. So when we told told you Javeon was primed for a massive 2014 we weren't kidding. His two first singles already featured production from rising stars MNEK and Tourist, so for his third single it made sense to up the ante even more. Teaming up with PMR's 2013 breakout future pop and R&B star Cyril Hahn, the two deliver an enticing deep disco-fied throwback house cut. With Cyril's underwater-esque twinkling synths and Javeon's R&B stylings invoking a '90s nostalgia, we're straight up in love with this.

Unique Ultraviolet Portraits Reveal Beauty within Flaws
Brooklyn-based photographer Cara Phillips developed this intriguing portrait project that uses ultraviolet light to reveal every tiny little imperfection across a person's face. To produce the black and white series, the artist set up on the streets of New York with a sign that said "Free Portraits." Any willing participants agreed to sit down right there and have their photo taken underneath a UV light.
Ultraviolet Beauties is a unique exploration that eliminates all of the retouching of a typical commercial portrait and exposes the more raw side of a person's face. Phillips refers to the series as "anti-portraits" and she explains, "The aim of a portrait, in commercial and vernacular photography, is primarily to hide flaws—to present a two-dimensional 'flawless' version of the person. Even before Photoshop, photographers would hand paint negatives to enhance or improve the subject's appearance. But [the function of these images] was to enhance and reveal flaws."
Inspired by medical photos from doctors' offices and medi-spa websites, Phillips invited her subjects to keep their eyes closed to create a sense of tension between what could be either a revealing or a restricting photograph. The subjects, with their eyes closed, become a vulnerable object and, as viewers, we become voyeurs who are peering in to a seemingly calm and intimate moment. It feels almost acceptable to critically examine every little pore and freckle and speck on each face without fearing the consequences of getting caught staring.
Modern Californian Home Features a Rooftop Garage
Built just outside of Los Angeles, the Car Park House by Anonymous Architects takes a traditional home layout and literally flips it upside down. While many homes across the country feature garages adjacent or below the main structure of a residence, parking spots for occupants of this house are found above it all, on the roof.
Since local building codes require two private parking spaces for each home, the architects behind the design decided to take advantage of the mountainous landscape and build the home downward, below the crest of the hill. This allows for an open-air garage that sits on top of the roof of the home, while the living areas all lie beneath it.
The multi-room structure's cantilevering design, which is supported by a steel frame embedded in secure, concrete blocks that have been mounted into the hillside, boast large facade cut-outs, skylights, and wooden floors that brighten up the interior and add warmth to the otherwise monotone, gray cube. These openings also make for spectacular views of the surrounding natural environment and the sprawling metropolis of LA off in the distance.

The 42 Ways To Type Laughter, Defined
Here’s what your typed and texted LOL-ing REALLY means.
1. haha = I'm acknowledging that you've said something you perceive to be funny, though I don't find it particularly funny myself.
2. haha. = I am weary and loathe to laugh, but here, you have forced it upon me; OR: I hate you.
3. haha! = I am pleasantly surprised to learn you are capable of modest humor.
4. ha ha ha = Very funny, you fucking asshole. You piece of shit.
5. ha = I am actually the most furious I have ever been in my entire life.
6. ha. = I knew it. I knew it. It is very tiring to be right about everything, but I live with it.
7. ha! = Clever little joke, sonny!
8. HA = Vengeance and/or justice has been served appropriately.
9. hah = Three-quarters of the way toward typing the most tepid indication of appreciation there is, I became too bored to continue.
10. haaaaaa = I am disgusted with (but not surprised by) humankind.
11. hehe = I am a middle-aged, self-proclaimed pickup artist who is pleased to have recently discovered Reddit.
12. hehehe = I just said something intended to be mildly sexual, but now I'm realizing it was maybe not clear that it was mildly sexual, so maybe I'll quickly also type the laughter of a cartoon villain wearing an eye patch???
13. heh = I have never experienced mirth, nor do I expect to.
14. heh heh = I am cautiously optimistic about my own evil plans.
15. muahaha = I am very optimistic about my own evil plans, and possibly an actually bad person.
16. mwahaha = I am very optimistic about my own evil plans, and possibly an actually bad person, and not a great speller.
17. heehee = I have done something mildly transgressive.
18. teehee = I have done something mildly transgressive and I think it's adorable.
19. hahaha = That was funny! I legitimately laughed, or at least smiled, and I am slightly happier now than I was before you just said that.
20. ahahaha = Like "hahaha," but less concerned with appearances.
21. bahaha = Like "ahahaha," but less concerned with appearances.
22. gahaha = Like "bahaha," but less concerned with appearances.
23. hahahaha (etc.) = What you just said was really funny. OR: What you said was only kind of funny, but I want to have sex with you.
24. haha...... = Gooooooooooo fuck yourself.
25. HAHA = I made an audible laughter-type sound at this!!
26. HAHAHA = I am IRL laughing so much!!!!!
27. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA (etc.) = I am starting to panic that I may never stop laughing!!!!!!!!!!!!
28. lol = I feel nothing. I want this sentence/conversation to be over but lack the wherewithal to end it directly, with purpose; I want to admit to a feeling but lack the conviction; I want to tell you how you've hurt me but want more to pretend I am invincible; I want to laugh, really laugh, but do not remember how; OR, maybe: that was funny, whatever.
29. Lol (sent from iPhone) = The above, but with an added element of Autocorrect shame. I did not mean to be so formal; I wanted it clear how little I cared.
30. lol. = Like "ha." but sadder. Angrier.
31. lolol(etc.) = I am so self-conscious right now!!! What am I sayinggggg, ever!
32. lolllllll = I feel beneath my skin surface a brimming hysteria, an existential query both exhausting and frantic: what am I doing here? The things that amuse me now are so different from anything I could have imagined as a young child. Partway through typing I realized the absurdity, the smallness of that which made me lol, and so I held my finger firm upon the "l" key for a while, and I wondered what would happen if I held it there forever.
33. LOL = I briefly, but not disingenuously, chuckled.
34. L-O-L/L.O.L. = I want nothing more than to cry. OR: I made a joke and I'm your dad.
35. lolz = I am Gchatting/texting with two to four other people at this time; each of them is significantly more interesting than you.
36. lulz = I am Gchatting/texting with five to seven other people at this time; each of them is significantly more interesting than you.
37. lmao = That is the dumbest thing I've ever heard.
38. lmfao = That is the dumbest fucking thing I've ever heard.
39. lmbo = I'm neither laughing nor happy, but I am arguing a point I'm pleased with in my role as a person who works on the internet.
40. rofl = I am an extraterrestrial who learned to approximate human language by scanning millions of pages of AOL chat logs collected in the early 2000s.
41. roflcopter = I am a police officer working the undercover teen drug-use chatroom circuit.
42. lollerskates/lollercoaster = Sometime between 2000 and 2004 I was a starred internet forum poster, and someone I chatted with regularly — someone a little older, whom I looked up to, someone with lots of x's in his/her username — used this word, and I was overcome by impossible coolness. I am now grown, and quite serious, and typically hyper-articulate. But sometimes, when I find something a little funny, I indicate pleasure with an improbable portmanteau like this one, and I feel again that I am young, and excited, and waiting to get online.
Ceramic Cups Melt Into Puddles of Patterned Porcelain
For her sculpture series Nomad Patterns, artist Livia Marin's ceramic cups and kettles melt into puddles of porcelain while surprisingly retaining their original printed designs. The elaborate faux Chinese motifs of willows, birds and pagodas float out into a glossy ceramic pool still in perfect detail.
Interested in the issues of brokenness and recuperation, Marin's contrived ceramics question the strength of the relationships we establish with the everyday material objects that we use so habitually. Normally once something is broken, it either stops being used or is thrown away, but every so often a damaged object may linger if the owner feels particularly attached or sentimental.
It is that moment of decision or indecision that can bring new significance to an item that fascinates Marin. She attempts to recreate that necessary judgment in these ambiguously, useful objects and while the integrity and stability of this china should obviously be dubious after such spontaneous liquification, the decorated pottery is still beautiful and alluring in its destruction.
Beautifully Designed Movie Theaters in Golden California
The Fox Theater I, Oakland
New York-based French photographer Franck Bohbot traveled to California to spotlight the most amazing movie theaters, big and small, as an homage to the history of film in his series titled Cinema. He captures the grandiose scale of some exquisitely designed theaters as well as the compact, intimate setting of a few indie film houses. In either case, there's something attractive about the architecture and inexplicably significant about the rooms in which strangers gather for a shared experience.
Bohbot's photo series is as much about the architecture of each venue as it is about the actual event of people entering these mini arenas, awaiting entertainment. The emptiness of the theaters allow the viewer to take in the symmetry and silence of each space, while admiring everything around the blank screen. Without a movie projecting in front of a crowd, one is able to appreciate the intricate details of each location and the draw of going to a movie theater for a viewing, rather than watching something on their computer or mobile device.
