David Jesus, chef do Restaurante Belcanto, acaba de ganhar o prémio "Chef de l'Avenir (Chef do Futuro)", instituído pela Academia Internacional de Gastronomia (AIG). Como o nome indica, este galardão pretende premiar os chefes que a AIG considera terem um futuro promissor. A forma como são escolhidos os vencedores do prémio - que é atribuído a chefes de vários países - não é divulgado, bem como o critério, que sempre foi um pouco vago, pois já foram contemplados chefes muito no seu inicio de carreira, como José Avillez, em 2005, ou outros, já consagrados, como Vincent Farges, da Fortaleza do Guincho, em 2012/2013. Não sei se esta atribuição representa um regresso do prémio ao verdadeiro sentido do termo. Porém, a escolha não podia ser mais acertada. De facto, David Jesus, embora se quede naturalmente na sombra de José Avillez, é um chef cujo trabalho é muito respeitado e valorizado pelos seus pares, a começar pelo próprio Avillez. Sendo o seu papel mais executivo do que criativo, e, sentindo-se confortável com o importante papel que tem actualmente na estrutura do grupo José Avillez (de quem é sócio), a grande incógnita que se coloca é a de saber se David Jesus terá ou não ambições em ser um verdadeiro "número um". Até por essa dúvida, que involuntariamente levanta, este prémio não poderia ter tido melhor destino.
Nota: no passado teci criticas à Academia Portuguesa de Gastronomia (APG) pela sua opacidade. Reitero novamente essas criticas dado que pouco ou nada mudou nesses termos: continua a não existir um site, ou uma página no Facebook - o que é incompreensível, nos dias de hoje - onde se possa saber ao que vem e ao que vai (um manifesto, objectivos, propósitos, etc). É verdade que, como organização privada que é, os seus membros podem muito bem fazer dela o que lhes apetecer. Contudo, estou em crer, que quem utiliza um nome tão importante ("Academia") e distribui prémios, mesmo que não se conheçam os critérios, tem uma responsabilidade muito maior do que a de um vulgar grupo de almoçaristas. Da pouca informação existente, sabe-se que a APG é filiada na AIG - Associação Internacional de Gastronomia (essa sim, tem um site) e que o seu presidente é o conhecido gastrónomo José Bento dos Santos, que é também vice-presidente da AIG.

Amsterdam-based skateboard/surf brand DEZEEP releases a unique 5-panel cap inspired by De Nachtwacht (The Night Watch), a masterpiece by the Dutch painter Rembrandt.

I tried a pole dancing class…
I had heard that it’s a really good workout (I mean is who doesn’t secretly dream of being able to swing around a pole hanging on only by your legs?), so I decided to check it out with a friend the other weekend.
As soon as the instructor entered the room, a voluptuous woman wearing neon pink spandex underwear and a sports bra, I knew I was going to come out a changed woman. She began demonstrating the warm up: “Face down, ass out, face down, ass out,” she yelled. She shook her backside at an alarming speed before jumping into a spread-eagle position on her back, gyrating her hips in the air.
What did I get myself in to?
As the class progressed, everyone took off their shirts and danced in sports bras and tiny booty shorts, while I sweated away in my t-shirt and workout pants. During the back-spins on the pole, my hands screeched all the way down and I landed unceremoniously on the floor. It was nearly impossible for me to find my “inner stripper” during the free-style portion of the class.
I guess my dreams of being Demi Moore in Striptease are going to have to wait. I went ahead and signed up for yoga tomorrow night.

West Virginia-based artist Brett Kern has mastered the art of illusion with handcrafted ceramic sculptures that deceptively look like inflatable toys. Each figure in this ongoing series of work presents a set of whimsically simple characters, be it a minimalist dinosaur or a cartoonish astronaut. With additional details including its shiny glaze, a cleverly placed air valve, and the painted illusion of seams, pinched from the pressure of air inside, Kern manages to easily trick viewers into believing his ceramic works are merely balloons.
The artist says of his work: "My predilection for producing collectible objects comes from my training as a potter and my persistent preoccupation with collecting toys, pop memorabilia, and nostalgic items from my youth." He adds, "Movies, television, toys and games dominated the cultural landscape of my youth. I am a product of this specific time period, and I like to think of my artwork as the fossils that will help preserve it."

It IS a crazy world we’re living in!
"Virtual Insanity" became an anthem of the late '90s, thanks to an amalgam of weird hats and funky beats. But what made the song truly memorable was the video, with its crazy moving rooms and furniture, which was kind of a novel thing back in 1997.
Here's what that video looks like without the music, and instead, a YouTuber called Musicless Musicvideos has dubbed it over with grunts, foot taps, and sounds of sliding furniture. The result is pretty great.

Weeks ahead of releasing their fourth studio album, English band Metronomy releases Love Letters‘ title track. The band’s time spent at London’s Toe Rag Studios comes through in full on “Love Letters” with its piano-driven backbone. An acconampying music video directed by Michel Gondry is due out shortly while Love Letters releases on March 10.

Jimmy Q is a 19-year-old that's a third of electronic sax house trio Imaginary Friends, but his solo work is also quite impressive. His ears are wise beyond his years, as he's sampled everyone from Afrika Bambaataa to Smokey Robinson in his production. This rendition of "Let's Get It On" is a soothing one, using trap hats on a bouncy bass tune while a subtle clip of "Nas Is Like" quietly floats in the background. The results are sexy, and one of a large stack of downloadable tunes you can snag from this promising young musician's SoundCloud. It's brand spanking new, and the perfect way to wind down your week.

Last weekend this photo surfaced online with no source or explanation, and so NO ONE EVEN KNEW WHAT TO THINK!
It doesn't really taste like cookie dough. Several staffers said they got hints of coffee or caramel, and one said it should be renamed the Frappuccino Oreo. It's good, we all agreed, but if you were to taste it blindly, you most likely wouldn't guess that it's supposed to represent cookie dough.

“123455” overtook “password” this year in the internet’s most depressing race. The worst passwords of 2013 prove we still need a lot of help.
2013 was a wildly visible year for cyber security and online privacy. There were, of course, the monumental NSA and Snowden revelations, but 2013 was also a year in which tech companies like Adobe, Google, Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn all fell victim to some for of cyberattack. Large scale news organizations watched as major email phishing scams compromised their social media accounts and, in one case, triggered a trading run on the stock market. And yet for all the visibility, punditry, and drama, new data suggests that internet users are still terrible at choosing a good password.
According to SplashData, which presents an annual list of the most common passwords (compiled in part by combing big security breaches and online password dumps), 2013's most common password is "123456", which narrowly beat out the defending champion "password". The only slightly more complicated "12345678" ended 2013 for the second year in third place. The year's fastest rising star was "1234567", a subtle but daring riff on a classic, which rose five spots to eighth place along with the always-popular "123123". The biggest loser in 2013: "trustno1", a standby for the paranoid user that both trusts no one and is too lazy to do something about it. Here's the top 25:
As Splashdata's post notes, 2013's passwords were influenced heavily by an Adobe breach, where users chose passwords like "adobe123" and "photoshop". The company's post also offers tips for crafting a better password:
Use passwords of eight characters or more with mixed types of characters. But even passwords with common substitutions like "dr4mat1c" can be vulnerable to attackers' increasingly sophisticated technology, and random combinations like "j%7K&yPx$" can be difficult to remember. One way to create more secure passwords that are easy to recall is to use passphrases -- short words with spaces or other characters separating them. It's best to use random words rather than common phrases. For example, "cakes years birthday" or "smiles_light_skip?"
