When we first saw it used in games like Minecraft and Team Fortress 2, the reaction was, more or less, "Cool!" And it is cool, to go running around in Skyrim on the Virtuix Omni. Unfortunately, it's got to be a lot more than cool to get even $2 million in investor money.

Samsung's Magician 4.3 Software Supercharges Your 840 Pro and Evo SSDs
Samsung's caching technology unlocks an insane speed boost on select SSDs
One thing we didn't cover in Samsung's earlier unveiling of a 1TB 840 Evo mSATA solid state drive (SSD) is the immediate availability of the company's Magician (version 4.3) software. This is notable because it introduces two big upgrades to Samsung's current SSD product lineup, including RAPID (Real-time Accelerated Processing of I/O Data) Mode for Samsung's 840 Pro family of SSDs, and a security features for the company's Evo SSD line. It's the RAPID Mode that really excites us, however, as it offers a significant speed boost to an already insanely fast SSD lineup.
We touched on this technology in our examination of Samsung's standard size Evo 1TB review back in July, but to recap, what it does is a take a portion of the host system's DRAM and CPU and uses those resources for caching purposes.
"RAPID Mode performs host level read acceleration and write optimization by utilizing free DRAM system memory and is designed to dramatically increase overall PC performance," Samsung says. "Previously only available on the 840 Evo, bringing this to the 840 Pro will enable current and future 840 Pro users to achieve storage subsystem performance faster than the SATA 3.0 interface allows."
What kind of speed boost? Samsung says by enabling RAPID Mode, users will see over 1,000MB/s sequential read speeds, or twice that of typical high-performance SATA SSD (and tens that of an average HDD), in certain situations. It achieves this by caching frequently used files in system memory. You can switch the mode on and off in software, but since it only requires 50MB of RAM and an 840 Pro or Evo drive to be activated, you might as well leave it on.
As for the security upgrade, the Magician software also enables TCG/OPAL on Samsung 840 Evo SSDs, It's a security specification defined by Trusted Computing Group that allows for better manageability and multi-level authentication.

Beautiful Spherical Kinetic Sculpture
“We wanted to make an object that could only be done through 3D printing.” I think that Toru Hasegawa of the New York City-based Proxy Design Studio overstates his case. It might be possible to make this kinetic sculpture by hand. But since it has one million distinct polygons in the design, it would take a long time.
The Mechaneu is a structure composed of 64 interlocking gears. Turn one and all the others turn in time. It’s an exploration of what Mr. Hasegawa sees as the natural evolution of geometry to solve design problems. I don’t agree with (or perhaps don’t understand) his argument, but I think that the sculpture is cool.
New US spy satellite features world-devouring octopus
President Obama is out to put the public's mind at ease about new revelations on intelligence-gathering, but the Office for the Director of National Intelligence can't quite seem to get with the program of calming everyone down.
Over the weekend, the ODNI was pumping up the launch of a new surveillance satellite launched by the National Reconnaissance Office. The satellite was launched late Thursday night, and ODNI's Twitter feed posted photos and video of the launch over the following days.

Snowden leak examines gaming as a terrorist propaganda and training tool
The latest document dump from former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden is getting a lot of deserved attention for revelations that international security agencies are taking steps to monitor communications inside online games. But those leaked documents also include an in-depth report on the potential for games to be used as recruitment, training, and propaganda tools by extremist organizations.
Security contractor SAIC produced the 66-page report "Games: A look at emerging trends, users, threats and opportunities in influence activities" in early 2007, and the document gives a rare window into how the US intelligence community views interactive games as a potential tool to be used by foreign actors. While parts of the report seem pretty realistic about gaming's potential use as a propaganda and planning tool, other sections provide a more fantastical take on how video games can be used as potential weapons by America's enemies.
Games as propaganda
The strongest parts of the report focus on how games can be used as part of propaganda efforts, presenting a particular political viewpoint or ideology in an engaging and easy-to-digest way. For instance, MTVu's Darfur is Dying is cited for "evok[ing] sympathy for the people of Darfur" by putting players in the shoes of a refugee. Worryingly, neo-Nazi entertainment company Resistance Records used a game called Ethnic Cleansing to reinforce its message that Jews and non-white races are "sub-humans" worth killing.

Live show: Fahrenheit (Indigo Prophecy)
[Mash Tactics airs Monday through Friday at 4p.m. Pacific on Dtoid.TV. Watch Rick 'King Foom' Olson play a variety of games, each day with its own theme. With a heavy focus on community and viewer interaction, you can be as much a part of the show as anything else.]
It's Monday again, so you know what that means for Mash Tactics, yup, another day of showcasing cheap-ass games old and new, for gamers on a budget. Tonight we'll be diving back into one of David Cage's earliest projects, Fahrenheit, known as Indigo Prophecy in the states.
Now, while this game doesn't feature quite as many emotions or polygons compared to some of the newer titles from Quantic Dream, and the story goes completely bat-sh*t insane at the end, it's still one of my favorites from the team that created the 'interactive drama' genre. If you missed out on this game when it was released, come by the show tonight and see what it's all about, then if you're interested in picking it up, grab it for the low price of five dollars right now on GOG.com.

Viacom CEO sees 'very strong chance' of virtual multichannel provider launching in 2014
Philippe Dauman, Viacom's CEO, said Monday that he expects that a virtual pay TV distributor could launch next year. "I think there's a very strong chance of that," Dauman said at the end of the UBS Global Media and Communications Conference in New York, when asked if 2014 would be the year that a virtual MVPD would finally debut.

Barcodes Reveal Patterns In Breaking Bad Character Wardrobes
This infographic captures the colors worn by each character throughout Breaking Bad and how they changed over the seasons. Creator John LaRue noticed there were definite patterns to each character’s wardrobe.
It’s the attention to detail that makes the show great. And that attention to detail extends as far as the colors worn by the various characters. I’ve tried to illustrate it with an infographic showing every color worn by the characters most affected by Walter White’s decisions, along with Walter himself…There are a lot of patterns that emerge, so much so that each character has an identifying color.
The idea was even taken one step further by Vincent Chuang who created colored barcodes for each episode.
See the full infographic and the barcodes after the break…
