Japanese Artist Transforms Old Newspapers Into Expressive Creatures

by dmitry

Spirited monkeys, inquisitive rabbits, placid walruses, and other species come to life in Chie Hitotsuyama’s studio. Working with glue and twisted rolls of newspaper, the Tokyo-based artist crafts three-dimensional portraits of animals that are full of personality.

More info: Chie Hitotsuyama (h/t: creators)

“I’m breathing new life into old newspapers that no longer serve their role as an information medium,” she says.

Hitotsuyama has been working on this zoological series since 2011. The idea for the first sculpture, of a rhinoceros, came to her after seeing a rhino getting attacked by poachers during a trip through Africa in 2007. After that, it took four years for her to develop her signature technique. In the artist’s words, she’s “taken it slow.”

Guy Made A Computer Case Out Of Old Soviet Electronic Parts Looks Magically Cool

by dmitry

This Russian guy has a hobby of making different things from the remainders of old Soviet electronic and electric parts. He deliberately collects different old Soviet switches, buttons, small bulbs and indicators. Here is one of his latest works – a computer case made from all this old Soviet scrap parts.

h/t: englishrussia

Some parts were in bad condition so he cleaned them up and turned into shiny new looking ones.

With the switches you can choose which parameter is going to be displayed as well to turn on and off additional fans and more. Also a separate Soviet button for reset, on/off of the computer and lights of the scales.

Initially Soviet scales were not designed to have lights in them, so he added the LEDs himself.

To compliment this cool thing he also restored old Soviet microphone “Octava” which can be plugged now into a modern computer and be used for any purpose microphones are used.

And now the most cool thing that all those switches and displays are serving some function and not just for a design purpose. For example you can see how much free memory left on those arrow scales. Also the fan speed, processor temperature, processor load and more is being shown on them.

Diseño moderno para las latas de sardinas

by Troy

lata-sardinas-autobus

Tabletop Stuntman!

by Sarang Sheth

While most fidget toys are designed to keep you engaged, the Mokuru is designed to keep you entertained! Inspired by probably the earliest fidget-toy ever, the pen cap, Mokuru is a talented little topsy-turvy tabletop thing that does cartwheels when you push it around any surface. Unlike most fidget-gadgets, Mokuru isn’t something you use in the background. The Mokuru is designed to captivate, keeping your hands as well as eyes occupied as its beech-wood body does back-flip after back-flip in its entertaining style.

The Mokuru performs flips with a hypnotic flair, and with a little practice, one can go from simple flips to more complex routines capable of impressing anyone! While playing with the Mokuru is definitely fun, it also helps by relieving stress while improving hand-eye coordination as well as boosting concentration. The Mokuru is the perfect toy for people with ADHD, allowing them to fidget, yet stay focused.

Spun out of a single piece of beech wood, the Mokuru’s curves are what give it its gymnastic abilities. The main body is covered on both ends with silicone pads that protect surfaces from getting scratched or damaged. Handy and pocketable, the Mokuru has the same footprint as a USB thumb drive, or a lipstick… allowing you to carry it anywhere for instant entertainment.

Hey, bottle flips are yesterday’s news… Are you up for the Mokuru flip challenge?

Still Life Photographer Creates Epic “Outdoor” Scenes Almost Without Spending Any Money

by dmitry

According to photographer Vatsal Kataria: “I am commercial still life photographer but I love creative or conceptual photoshoots. I love to do miniature photography and what I love about my art is that I can turn my fantasies into reality. Being a miniature photographer, I always think of something new and something everyone can do.”

More info: Vatsal Kataria, Instagram (h/t: boredpanda)

“I do not use any expensive ready to use props and dioramas. I make all the stuff I use in a set of the very minimum resources. I usually use plaster of parts to create mountains or rocks and some old paper to give basic shape of hills. I mainly used polystyrene sheets and mixture of plaster and black paint to make roads. Other things I use are some polystyrene sheets, homemade foliage, baking powder for snow and some paints. I used very basic supplies so that if someone wants to try they can. I also used photoshop to bring out the beauty. So it’s very simple and very exciting,” Vatsal told Bored Panda.

“Everything usually takes me 3 – 15 days from planning to execute the ideas. It’s just a myth that you cannot do great photography without great and expensive props and utilities. It’s endless what you can do with it and do it the way you want to.”

Chinese Company Builds A Bamboo Treehouse Without Nails Or Screws

by dmitry

A Beijing-based architecture firm named Penda has designed a treehouse made from bamboo that doesn’t use any of those things. This design instead requires ropes and rods of bamboo, and nothing more. It was such an impressive and revolutionary concept that it won second place at the 2016 A’Design Awards in the architecture design category. Even if it hadn’t won, it’s certainly impressive!

More info: Penda (h/t: thisismarvelous)

Attempting to be environmentally friendly, the treehouse would use recycled bamboo from the area. The individual rods are then arranged to form the joints. Eight rods form what the team calls a “knot,” which would be used to create interlaced walls.

The floors are made in the way you would expect, with bamboo rods being lashed together to form a continuous and flat layer for walking on. The whole design is modular, meaning extensions could be brought in from off-site and added to the structure. This is how the treehouse could form.

I have been here, multiple times!  By referring to the order as a “Little Rosa”, you don’t have to make as big a deal out of the fact that you’re seeking help.

And believe it or not, it gets better. Rosa’s also gives out sweatshirts to the homeless (or sells them to the general public) that has information on local soup kitchens and even computer training in the area, on an insert sewn inside the sweatshirt.

(Details)

Reblogged again for these excellent details.

Also you can buy slices for the homeless through their online store, from anywhere, not just PA!

For the next two weeks, I’ll be exploring the city of London. Situated on the River Thames, the city is the world’s most-visited destination as measured by international arrivals and is recognized for having a diverse range of peoples and cultures. Today I’ll be in the upper half of this Overview to watch the annual Oxford-Cambridge boat race, which runs for 4.2 miles along the river.
