Zn-MOF-74 Derived N-Doped Mesoporous Carbon as pH-Universal Electrocatalyst for Oxygen Reduction Reaction

by Lin Ye, Guoliang Chai, Zhenhai Wen

It is of increasing importance to explore new low-cost and high-activity electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), which have had a substantial impact across a diverse range of energy conversion system, including various fuel cell and metal–air batteries. Although engineering carbon nanostructures have been widely explored as a candidate class of Pt-based ORR electrocatalysts owing to their proved high activity, outstanding stability, and ease of use, there still remains a daunting challenge to develop high activity metal-free electrocatalysts in pH-universal electrolyte system. Here, a reliable and controllable route amenable to prepare nitrogen-doped porous carbon (NPC) with high yields and exceptional quality is described. The as-prepared NPC shows advantages of high activity, high durability, and methanol-tolerant as an efficient pH-universal electrocatalyst for ORR, showing comparable or even better activity as compared with the commercial Pt/C catalysts not only in alkaline media but also in acidic and neutral electrolyte. Systematic electrochemical studies, combining with density functional theory calculation, demonstrate the unique nitrogen-doping species and favorable pores in the as-designed NPC synergistically contribute to the significantly improved catalytic activity in pH-universal medium. The present work potentially presents an important breakthrough in developing ORR electrocatalysts for various fuel cells.

Nitrogen-doped porous carbon (NPC) with pore size of ≈10–12 nm is developed using oxygen-rich Zn-metal-organic-framework-74 as precursor. The optimized NPC sample shows comparable or even superior oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity compared with the commercial Pt/C catalysts not only in alkaline media but also in acidic and neutral electrolyte.

AMD is back, and with a bang

by cellmate707

It’s getting a few years ago AMD almost threw in the towel and let Intel make do as they would in the enthusiast market. This happened after Bulldozer debacle , when AMD really needed to get cleaned house and start with a blank drawing board.

We may think that taking the pressure off themselves and competitor Intel has given AMD gain time and serenity they needed. For last summer happened miracle, as AMD promised to be heading back to give Intel some real competition .

Which of course would be good for all consumers, not just those who have grown tired of Intel’s little modest improvements from the previous to the next processor generation, although Intel’s dominance has made testing graphics cards far easier, as AMD has been completely out of the game.

A top model

When we on the test bench today, AMD’s new top model Ryzen 7 1800X, it is both a pleasure and a surprise.

With eight cores and SMT (simultaneous multithreading – equivalent Intel’s hyperthreading) we suddenly have something to be able to take up the fight in both entusiast- and extreme class.

Who would have believed it for a little years ago?

AMD Ryzen 7 1800X has been joined by two minor relatives, and being from AMD itself often compared to the Intel Core i7-6900K.

The latter Intel processor features of writing a price tag of about 11 000 – more than twice as much as you have to pay for Ryzen 7 1800X.
AMD Ryzen 7 1800X AMD Ryzen 7 1700X AMD Ryzen July 1700 Intel Core i7-6900K
standard Frequency 3.6GHz 3.4GHz 3.0GHz 3.2GHz
Turbo Frequency Up to 4.0 GHz Up to 3.8 GHz Up to 3.7 GHz Up to 3.7 GHz
Cores / Threads 8/16 8/16 8/16 8/16
Cache (L2 + L3) 20MB 20MB 20MB 22 MB
TDP 95 Watt 95 Watt 65 Watt 140 Watt
Price (ca) 5400, – 4200, – 3500, – 11 000, –

It should of course be noted that Intel also has an even tougher processor, namely the Core i7-6950X ten processor cores that each could grind two threads. But then we are also talking about a price tag of just over 17 000 million – more than three times more than Ryzen 7 1800X.

We have also included both this and Intel’s cheaper quad-core Kabys Lake processors in comparison.

New processor, new socket, new chipsets

To be a little technical is Ryzen processors built on a 14NM FinFET process and consists of one or more CPU Complex (CCX) modules. Each module has four cores, while each core has 512KB L2 cache and can run two processing threads. Entire CCX module has 8 MB of L3 cache sharing.

AMD Ryzen 7 1800X has two such CCX modules and thus has eight cores. The run two processing threads per core called SMT (simultaneous multithreading) . Intel calls this hyperthreading.

Later we will get Ryzen processors with four and six cores. The latter will also be built up by two CCX modules, but have two cores disabled.

But AMD gives us not only a new processor, here we are talking about an entirely new platform: AM4. The new shelf feels though not so new, since it requires that the processor still must have sticks, so there we have the a little gust of the past.

Naturally, we also get new chipset and a bunch new motherboard. We shall not go into the various chipsets here, but the three most appropriate options for PC builders will be X370, B350 and A320.

AMD thinks that the X370 is the enthusiast segment, while B350 has been labeled “performance” and A320 are “mainstream.” X370 and B350 allows overclocking of all Ryzen processors, so we guess the focus will be on these two.
Following the most awesome, but …

AMD can certainly think of a quick entry back into the hearts of the world’s PC enthusiasts, but it will of course be entirely dependent on two main things: price and performance. In addition, such as power consumption and segmentation – ie that there is a processor that fits your use – also could play a role.
AMD is finally back, and with Ryzen delivers the amazing multi-core performance at a reasonable price.

Compared with extreme processors to Intel, that Broadwell-E, keeping AMD Ryzen 7 1800X going strong quite so well – both in single and multi-core operation. We see this in relation to the price, which is half and then some, this processor as a bargain to rain.

Meanwhile, not Ryzen 7 1800X equally good at everything. As with Intel Extreme processors with eight or more cores is the clock frequency limited compared to CPUs with fewer cores, such as the Core i7-7700K and Core i5-7600K .

In applications that do not utilize more than four cores – or fewer – therefore these faster processors have an advantage. It does not help with many cores if they are not used, so you should have to think a bit about what kind of applications to be used.

This also applies to games. Over recent years, game developers had many good reasons to optimize their products on Intel platforms, and not so many good reasons to do the same with AMD. As of today, are therefore Ryzen bit after the game performance, especially when we look at lower resolutions.

We expect, however, that this will change in the future.

Another thing we would like to see a notch better with AMD’s Ryzen 7 1800X is overclocking – our test sample has at least not been particularly willing at normal air cooling. But now the this a top model, so it may be that there is more going on in the less expensive editions.
Conclusion

Years in “exile” from the race against Intel seems to made AMD well. They have found tranquility to build an entirely new processor, while Intel may have rested a bit too much on his laurels.

Ryzen 7 processors takes AMD right back in the venues, and with the top model 1800X will be dealt slap and friendly groin park in several directions – at least when we take the award in the game.

It is very well again to recommend an AMD processor, and we should today gone for an eight-core, there is no doubt where we had put money. For when we manage other words, half the cash flowing compared to what we had to pay for a similar performance for a couple of days ago.

Should you be a gaming fanatic is not the gold standard as clear. From the test of Kabys Lake processors we know that high clock speed matters more than the number of processors in most games – at least when the number of logical processors is eight or higher.

This will probably change in in the future, but it would then not happen overnight. So if you are sitting on an Intel processor is it for the time being no need to go for an even more expensive AMD Ryzen for spillytelsens guilt.

But is pure processing power is important to you, is undoubtedly AMD Ryzen 7 1800X way to go – at least if the programs you use most can make use of all the cores.

It will be interesting to see Intel’s answer to this mighty influx in a market they have dominated for so long.
