Trending Gear: February 2017

submitted by Mikey Bautista

Every day, readers like you proudly share photos of their everyday carry on the site.

Not only is looking through their pockets this way super interesting, but it's also a great way to find really cool gear you never even knew existed (yet somehow, suddenly need…).

When you hover over an item you like and click on it in these photos, you're also letting other EDCers know you find that gear interesting. Each click gets recorded to create a data-driven ranking of the most popular gear, which you can find in our new and improved Gear section of the site found in the top menu bar.

Gear with the most views and clicks climbs its way to the top of this feed and lets the EDC community know what's trending right this second.

This past month, you all seemed to be most interested in some of the most unique (and tiny!) knives for EDC. There's also a nice trend of consolidating and managing your carry with the use of organizers. And while there are some usual suspects on the list, there are plenty of new and interesting additions that make a fresh appearance. Let's take a look.

The Best EDC Gear from February 2017

10. CRKT Minimalist

As seen in: Russell's Air Force Duty EDC

Many fixed blades have a larger profile to match their outdoor functionality. With the Minimalist, CRKT shows that with the right design, even fixed blades have a place in an EDC. Don't be fooled by its 2.125” blade—with its clip point shape, the Minimalist has enough belly to get the job done both on and off the field, hence its popularity. You've got plenty of leverage and grip thanks to its resin-infused fiber handles and deep finger choils, and a glass-reinforced nylon sheath (with belt loop) gives the Minimalist plenty of carry options.

9. Knomo Knomad Organizer

As seen in: Ridgeway's Librarian EDC

Many EDCers tend to carry a lot of stuff to stay prepared, so the secret is in keeping it all together. Knomo's Knomad Organizer is one such product to manage your essentials, keeping your gear handy all in one place. It has compartments and divisions for things like cards and electronics, so with one zip they stay protected and ready for duty when going about your day. It's a great option to carry around your EDC when you don't want to pack a whole bag for the day.

8. Rickshaw PocketDojo Sleeve

As seen in: Richard's Creative Director EDC

It's been a month of consolidation, as the 8th most popular item is another organizer. Made by Rickshaw Bagworks in San Francisco, the PocketDojo Sleeve is a waterproof sailcloth sleeve designed to hold essentials like your phone and stationery. It has a large slot to fit most EDC-friendly notebooks or your phone, slot(s) for pens, and even includes plastic sleeves to help organize cash and cards. Its light weight and rugged quality make it a handy addition to your carry.

7. Boker Plus DW-1

As seen in: Dan's Carpentry EDC

Just how much utility can a 1” blade hold? With the right ergonomics and materials, plenty. Plus it's a size that can slip into any EDC to give cutting power without taking up any space at all. That's what the Chad Los Banos-designed Boker Plus DW-1 is all about. It's got an an overall length of 2.8” while still packing an edge made from tough AUS8 steel. And with a reverse tanto design that makes the most of its size, it's an almost invisible knife for everyday utility that won't break the bank or weigh you down.

6. Streamlight Microstream

As seen in: Trevor's Daily Carry
Used by over 240 Everyday Carry members

The Streamlight Microstream is one of the most popular flashlights on our site, so it's no surprise it's a high placer on this list yet again. It takes one of the most common batteries available with the AAA, has enough lumens for everyday tasks, and is lightweight with a dual-purpose pocket clip that lets you clip it on the brim of a hat for additional functionality. And best of all, it's very inexpensive which makes it a no-brainer of an entry-level light.

5. Leatherman Wave

As seen in: Stephen's Technician EDC
Used by over 575 Everyday Carry members

One of Leatherman's most popular models is also a consistently popular multi-tool in our submissions. The Wave has 17 tools to cover your daily bases, including handy outside-accessible blades that can be opened one-handed for convenience. It's a robust tool with a build quality to match, hence its appearance in many of your submissions. The 25-year Leatherman warranty doesn't hurt much, either!

4. Boker Kwaiken Flipper

As seen in: J's EDC
Used by over 25 Everyday Carry members

Boker's Kwaiken Flipper is one of the sleeker models in their catalog, with a slim profile that gives off a gentlemanly aesthetic. It comes with a hefty 3.5” VG-10 blade, with a sizeable, sweeping edge for long, precision cuts. The Kwaiken also features the Ikoma Korth Bearing System for a smooth flipping action for performance to match its look. And while it's on the larger side of EDC, a lanyard hole and pocket clip gives you options to make it a part of your carry.

3. Amsler Atom

As seen in: Rob's Workday EDC

It's not every day a custom knife places high on this list, which goes to show how exceptional Amsler's Atom is. Its key feature is its magnetic interlocking system which secures the blade into its “sheath” side where its clip is attached. At the center of this system is an N52 neodymium magnet rated for over 8 pounds of force, ensuring the Atom won't come apart when carried on a lanyard or clipped to your pocket. It's also got a unique tanto edge made from CPM 154 steel, a hardy metal strong enough for the toughest cutting tasks.

2. Microtech Ultratech

As seen in: Tyler's Bike Adventure Carry

Another uncommon knife making waves the past month is Microtech's iconic Ultratech out-the-front automatic knife. While a bit overkill for general EDC tasks, it's definitely a unique addition to any carry. A contoured aluminum handle holds the Ultratech's double-action OTF mechanism, meaning the same switch deploys and retracts its 3.44” blade. The Ultratech also comes in a variety of colors, partial and full serrations for its blade, and handle finishes to match your preference of tactical aesthetic.

1. Torqbar Spinner

As seen in: Igor's Titanium EDC

And last month's most popular EDC item...actually has little to do with the practical aspect of EDC itself. You may have seen this oval addition to a number of carries, and wondered about its purpose. It's the Torqbar Spinner, a custom-machined, weighted toy that's spawned its own market of pocket fidget tools. By holding it in the middle and flicking its ends, the end weights keep the motion going, giving you a satisfyingly long spin during times when you just need to do something with your hands. It's not for everyone, not particularly practical in the traditional sense, but it is this month's most popular EDC product.

BigiDesign Bit Bar

submitted by Ed Jelley

For quick fixes on the go, it's a good idea to carry a pocket tool. Most come with a screwdriver of some sort built in, but when you go to use it, the design often feels like an afterthought. And to properly tackle all the different screws you'll encounter, you'd need to somehow carry a whole kit of loose bits. Instead, what if you could have a full-fledged screwdriver and no-compromise bit set that fits conveniently in your pocket? BigiDesign is back at it again on Kickstarter with their newest tool that does exactly that, called the Bit Bar.

Inside, the Bit Bar holds onto 8 different (standard 1/4” sized) bits that you can swap out depending on your needs. Each bit is held in place by a spring loaded magnet. You can push down on the Bit Bar to extend your bit collection, grab the one you need, then release to let the rest retract back into the handle. There’s also an included bit extender so you can get into those tight areas and hard-to-reach screws more easily.

What makes the Bit Bar unique is that it features a full-sized handle that’s easy to use, but it carries more like a pocket knife than it does a screwdriver. As if designing an excellent, functional tool wasn’t enough, BigiDesign have made their own custom three-position ratchet that works seamlessly with the Bit Bar.

The Bit Bar is available in black DLC-coated titanium, tumbled raw titanium, or a more affordable fiberglass-reinforced nylon. Pledges start at $59, and go up to $120. Hit the link below and check out the campaign and demo video for yourself.

It’s hard to find anything to complain about when you hold a Huawei P10

by cellmate707

Huawei has just released a new top model. The name is P10, and we snatched us a test specimen as soon as possible was. The phone is built in metal and has 5.1 inch large screen. In many ways it is a significantly more compact alternative for those who dribbled at Mate 9 Pro , which was launched last fall.

Design-wise, we are talking about a phone very similar to last year’s top model. It is slightly more rounded edges, but the design direction is about the same. Although the designs whatsoever not resemble each other, the transition bit in common with da Samsung went from Galaxy S6 to Galaxy S7 . Everything was rounder, but still saw quite liked it.

And rounder phones are usually a little better than keeping matters and things with sharp edges.
Very good to keep

Little P10 is horrible good to keep, and although I personally prefer a little bit larger screens must say I really like this phone. I am well used to hold larger phones gradually and successfully makers until they were six-inch screens with one hand. But one thing is what you get used to and quite well get to, while another is what fits quite naturally.

Although one might have convinced themselves that size is no obstacle, it is thus still that the good way P10 is in hand on makes it extra easy to like this phone.

Design-wise coming this matter in a number Fresje colors, Huawei spent a lot of time talking about the launch. But Norway is the silver, black and gold, which most likely emerge. It’s a bit annoying, given that both the green and the blue variant is obviously different from the crowd both color wise and with a slightly coarser aluminum that gives a special glare light.

The screen that adorns the front is all right in every way, but with P10 you must make do with full-HD. The larger Plus version of P10 this year has been higher resolution – an upgrade from last year’s P9 Plus model. It is nevertheless very high point density on both, so when Plus model is a little bit closer, it is more a bonus for it, than any inconvenience to the usual.

alright battery

Another thing that probably stands a part of these is the battery life. In my use keeps P10 around a half day on one charge, with its 3200 mAh big battery.

Plus model has 3750 mAh and will probably last part longer per charge. It must be noted that the testing period took place under mobile fair in Barcelona, and several calls I had with the luggage got both slightly shorter battery life and behaved little unusual down there. A sudden abundance of reporters and mobile manufacturers that are putting pressure on mobile network may provide some unpredictable results.

There is also a small but important things to get by here. Like the Mate 9 Pro follows these phones with the apps you use the most often and when. Thus do the best they can to make sure that the content you need are already ready when you need it. It will both save energy and cut in delays. Phone should learn to recognize habits must be used for a while. Probably four days in shortest team that I have noticed big the effect of this phone, and given normal circumstances, whatever may P10 last even a little longer than I have experienced.

We’re going to continue to use P10 after the publication of this test, and will update the text with more information about battery life when we have better grounds.
lightning fast

The experienced performance is nevertheless very good. System chip that’s in your phone is one of the most powerful on the market, and once again the resemblance to feed 9 Pro are highlighted. Here chews phone through applications and menus as if it were straw. Delay occurs hardly at all.

Given that Huawei has added their own menu system on top of Android 7.1 this is impressive. Even the hottest models from other mobile manufacturers will gladly stop here and there. Several times we have highlighted phones with pure Android as winners of perceived performance. There are menus to slip silky whatever happens, but they are not necessarily inspired app experience, and there is a slightly different type of cash responses one gets from devices like this.

The menyglien is here, as with Samsung and several other, marginally clean Android devices.

There is already talk about nuances, although both camps can rightly claim to be the fastest, it comes just depends on what you are looking for.
Measured performance absolutely top class

If we look to clean measured performance should matter nothing to surpass Huawei P10. It is located in the neighborhood around the Samsung Galaxy S7. Thus, it is difficult to envisage applications or uses P10 is too slow at first. Here you should therefore be reasonably future-proof with such a phone. All games I’ve tried on the phone can also more than good enough to tuck so live in P10.

It is nevertheless a relatively poor business designing games that require substantially more performance than this. It takes a while for the previous generation phones to be replaced, and you develop something for only the few with possibly more powerful devices are not certain one will gain much from their app.
