English Toffee Gourmet Apple is a Real Treat at the Disneyland Resort

by Michelle Harker
Kristen

give me all the tooth problems please

Are you curious to know what the gourmet apple will be this month? Well wonder no more. For the month of September you will find that our Candy Makers have taken two very classic flavors from our kitchens and combined them into one delicious confectionery treat. Close your eyes and imagine, taking our timeless and mouthwatering English Toffee and combining it with a caramel apple. How? I’m about to tell you. They start with covering an apple in creamy caramel and then immerse it in sweet milk chocolate. But it doesn’t stop there. Next they take crunchy toffee pieces and roasted almonds and place them delicately on to the apple. With a few final drizzles of chocolate, this delectable apple is close as you get to the edge of perfection.

English Toffee Gourmet Apple at Disneyland Resort

Where can you find it? That’s easy. Candy Palace on Main Street, U.S.A., in Disneyland park; Trolley Treats on Buena Vista Street in Disney California Adventure park; and Marceline’s Confectionery in the Downtown Disney District.

What gourmet apple has been your favorite so far? Will you give this one a try?

new kitten for Maru and Maru is fine with it.

更新が滞り、ご心配をおかけいたしましたが、まるはとても元気です。

Sorry, I’ve been slow on blog post update.
Maru is doing just fine.

それに伴い、追いかけっこや、走り回って遊ぶのが大好きなまるの

And I found a new friend for Maru to play with,
maybe a partner for him to enjoy chasing and running around together…

A kitten came to our house from an animal hospital
as a new member or our family.
Maru has been our only cat for six years.
So we first had the kitty for two weeks to see
if Maru and he can get along well with each other.
But in only three days, the six-year old cat and
the two-month young kitty started to have fun time together.

「すばしっこい奴め!」
Maru:[Hey, you’re so quick!]

現在、心配していたチビ猫との関係は、期待していた以上に良好。
まるの気分次第では、一つの箱に入って朝まで寝ていることも。
今後は不定期更新となりますが、まるは元気にしていますので、心配しないでくださいね。
Now, they seem to like each other more than I thought.
When Maru is in a good mood, he even let the small one sleep
in his own box all night.

From now on, I will be updating this blog randomly.
But please don’t worry as Maru is doing fine.

Traffic, Botox, and Yoga: "East LA is All French Now" and Other Idiotic Recent Observations From the New York Times

by Eve Bachrach
Kristen

never change, NYT

2013.08_portmaneastla.jpg
[Mariachi Plaza via Chris]

The New York Times is a national newspaper, and, as such, they occasionally cover our nation's second largest city. You know, Los Angeles? But a quartet of articles over the past few days shows that, while sometimes the paper can write about LA like it's a normal place where news occasionally happens (Boyle Heights "gentefying", Wilshire Boulevard Temple renovating), they still mostly insist on covering the city like it's full of superficial freaks practicing absurd customs and social mores incomprehensible to their New York-based readership. For instance, here's a piece on this new LA trend called "walking", bearing the unfortunate headline "Hollywood's New Stars: Pedestrians" and including the line "many Angelenos would sooner have their mug shots appear on TMZ than go a few steps without a motor vehicle." Which is bad (and kind of unintelligible), but nothing compared to the newest entrant--an article so dumb, so lazy, so patronizing (of both Angelenos and New Yorkers, impressively), and so stereotype-laden we suspect it was written by an old robot programmed by Woody Allen on a bad night. Traffic? Boob jobs? Yoga? Check! Check! Check! Natalie Portman saying East LA is "all French" with absolutely no context or clarification from the author? CHECK. Here are our seven least favorite parts:

-- "You might not realize it until you're stuck in traffic on the 101, halfway through a whirlwind odyssey that spans a pop-up dance party in Westlake and a benefit in Bel-Air, all in an earnest attempt to understand Los Angeles's emerging fashion scene, that there's something very New York about the whole effort."

-- "'East L.A. is all French now,' marvels Natalie Portman at a benefit for her husband Benjamin Millepied's L.A. Dance Project."

-- "So what if Los Angeles is still better known for implants than outerwear?"

-- "Nobody goes out much — if they really wanted to go out, they'd be in New York — but when they do, the style set flocks to places like Giorgio's, a weekly '70s disco party at the Standard in West Hollywood, where a recent evening found David LaChapelle swing-dancing with the model agent Omar Alberto, while Dita Von Teese commandeered a banquette and Erin Wasson and Jody Watley boogied nearby."

-- "Its official uniform might as well be the supersoft T-shirt and jeans, followed closely by the maxi dress. Such apparel might come off as a tad low-key sashaying down a runway, but it's a look."

-- "And the cross-pollination between the worlds of fashion, music and art shows a promiscuity that more siloed New Yorkers rarely experience, perhaps as a result of a shared outsider status that haunts anyone in L.A. who is not in movies."

-- "or perhaps because the land of the endless summer, lunchtime Botox and near-mandatory yoga tends to put one in the mind-set not of moments but of eternities."

Video Interlude: Spend a Lovely Line-Free Day at Disney in a Minute and a Half

by Adrian Glick Kudler

Welcome to The Magic - A Disneyland Timelapse from Givot on Vimeo.

Yeah, a day at Disneyland's a lot of fun, but it's also a lot of waiting in line and skirting tourists and paying like $20 for a Mickey ice cream bar, so let's all just watch this minute and a half time-lapse video of the whole ordeal instead. Matt Givot and Dan Douglas "spent about 10 hours at the park taking 18,000 images of Disneyland, California Adventure and even Downtown Disney," according to the LA Times; the result features exactly no audio of screaming children (actually it's set to a delightful mashup by Pogo) and you can get drunk while you watch it, so get to it. (Givot, by the way, owns the lovely SoCal time-lapse zone--he also made videos of the space shuttle Endeavour's journey through Los Angeles and the Chevron coke drum's trip through the South Bay).

Office Space: Creepy Startup Has Workers All Living Together in Bel Air Rental

by Adrian Glick Kudler

Nightmare

2013.07_enplug.jpg

Updated 1:27 pm: Hey, those of you at the office right now--you're definitely thinking "Boy, I wish I could spend literally all my time here, in this office, thinking about this work and being around these coworkers," right? Who isn't! The staffers at startup Enplug certainly are--twelve of them, including the CEO, live together in a rental house in Bel Air. The rental house has six bedrooms. And three bathrooms. Twelve people. Coworkers. And Enplug is in the business of creating digital billboards, so it's all in the service of a noble cause. Here are some great perqs their living sitch has to offer:

-- Super cool values: "The idea is to live and breathe work—24 hours a day, seven days a week—without the commute and few outside distractions," says the Wall Street Journal.
-- Great work hours/appropriate dress code: "It's past midnight, but many staffers at Enplug ... are milling about the office in their T-shirts and boxers, writing code and talking strategy."
-- Lots of personal time: "Employees and managers meet, work, eat, clean, exercise and sleep in the same space."
-- Facetime with the boss: "there are occasional uncomfortable moments, such as nudging your boss to do the dishes."
-- Excellent compensation: "Most of the staffers living in the house get paid a modest stipend in lieu of salary, while the founders forgo salaries altogether, funneling company earnings back into rent, utilities and large boxes of Cheerios."
-- Fun totalitarianish atmosphere, in the words of the CEO: "We don't try to separate work life from our personal life … It's a little bit cultish … It is also extremely efficient."
-- But probably no sex: one couple who lives in the house, "both Enplug software developers in their 30s, say the practical perks, such as free food and rent, make up for the lack of privacy."

Notably, "Employees who choose to live in such arrangements are generally single 20-somethings who have recently left dorm life," because you wanna get to 'em before they realize that "work-life balance" is a thing.

Update: According to a listing from last summer, the house really only has five bedrooms and rents for $5,995 per month. So employees are getting about $500 in free rent a month. Totally worth it.

News! Update on Disney’s New Rapid Fill Refillable Mug

by AJ
Kristen

$9 for a day of soda. crazy.

Editor’s Note and Disclaimer: Here at Disney Food Blog, we work hard to ensure we’re giving you the MOST up-to-date and authoritative Disney Food news. So I’m compelled to let you know that in this case, there’s really only one source reporting this information; but there’s enough buzz around that we wanted to be sure you folks were aware of the potential program. Please note that this is still classified as rumor at this time. The Walt Disney Company has not confirmed any of this information to date. We don’t know anything for sure.

According to sources, Disney World will soon be bringing the new Disney Rapid Fill Refillable Mug program to Disney resort hotels.

Tested at All-Star Sports Resort a while back, and much like the process currently in use at Disney’s Water Parks, the new system would use an RFID bar code on each mug to give Disney guests access to refills for a pre-purchased period of time. The mug will then deactivate itself at the end of the purchased time frame.

But as of today, it’s looking more and more like the rumors may be true. Although at this time the Rapid Fill Refillable Program has not been confirmed by Disney, we have news today that the fountain machines at some beverage refilling stations at Walt Disney World resorts have been replaced with new machines that resemble those in a demo video by the company ValidFill.

The first set of photos are from the Beach Club Marketplace, where the machines were installed earlier this week.

Newly Installed Beverage Refill Station at Beach Club Marketplace

In this photo, you can see the small screen that provides the customer detailed information about their refill as it dispenses, as well as the trays below the fountain taps that reads the cup’s sensor.

The same set up is in place at All-Star Music Resort’s beverage refill station. The screens here are blank.

We received word that the machines have also been installed at the Contempo Cafe as well:

Contempo Cafe RFID Soda Machine

At this time, they are still functioning like the old machines. Reports are that it is “business as usual” and that guests can still use their purchased mugs currently. But we know that you have lots of questions, so let’s go over how the new Rapid Fill program will reportedly work.

How Will The Disney Rapid Refill Refillable Mug Program Work?

Refillable mugs will each have an RFID bar code that guests will scan at the soda fountains each time they refill their mugs.

Guests will be able to purchase mugs for a particular time frame, anywhere from one day to the length of their Disney stay. (Note that a “day” is considered one calendar day, not a 24-hour period. So if you arrive at 11:00pm and activate your mug, the first day will end at midnight that night.) Here is the current pricing:

$8.99 for 1 day
$11.99 for 2 days
$14.99 for 3 days
$17.99 for length of stay (currently set at 14 consecutive days, but may be able to be manually extended by a Cast Member)

Disney World Refillable Mugs

According to sources, the mugs will be valid for use at ANY Disney-owned resort hotel in Disney World. However, guests cannot bring their mug back on return visits to use it again. A new mug must be purchased for each stay.

One piece of information that isn’t quite clear: if you have a split stay between two Disney resort hotels and have paid for the 14-day refill option, will you be able to use the mug at both hotels assuming the two stays fall within the 14 consecutive days? Sources say yes, but it remains to be seen.

Will the Disney Rapid Fill Refillable Mug Program Be Part of the Disney Dining Plan?

Should the Rapid Fill Program come to pass, it will be included on the Disney Dining Plan as refillable mugs currently are. Guests purchasing any Disney Dining Plan will get a Rapid Fill Refillable Mug.

When Will The Disney Rapid Refill Refillable Mug Program Begin?

The rumor is that the mug program will begin this month at Disney’s All Star Resorts and will quickly roll out to other Disney World resort hotels.

What if I DON’T Want a Refillable Mug?!

Guests who choose not to purchase a refillable mug will still use Disney’s standard paper cups. According to sources, these cups will be authorized for four refills at the soda fountains.

This information has NOT been confirmed or even mentioned by Disney, so we are classifying it as a rumor right now. If you have any other confirmed information on the new Rapid Refill Program, please let us know! :-)

For more information about Disney’s current Refillable Mug Program, see our Disney Refillable Mug FAQ.

Also, here is the demo video that we mention above, so that you can compare ValidFill’s machine used in the demo with the machines that have been installed in a select number of Walt Disney World Resorts.

What are your thoughts on the potential Rapid Refill Disney Refillable Mug program? Let us know in the comments below.

Reviewed: New Logo for Hooters by Sky Design

by Armin
Kristen

Spoilers!

Spoiler: The Eyes are Boobies

New Logo for Hooters by Sky Design

Established in 1983 when it opened its first location in Clearwater, FL, Hooters is the original and still one of the leading "breastaurants" with 412 restaurants in 44 states of the U.S. and 27 countries around the world. For the uninitiated, Hooters is a "casual beach-themed" restaurant with "sports on large flat screens, and a menu that includes seafood, sandwiches, burgers, salads, and of course, Hooters original chicken wings." More recognizable than the food or establishment are the short-shorted, tight-tank-toped Hooter Girls, who "provide the energy, charisma and engaging conversation that keep guests coming back" and "Much more than just a pretty face, Hooters girls have game". They have game and a new logo to wear across their shirt as Hooters has introduced a new logo designed by Atlanta, GA-based Sky Design to coincide with its 30th anniversary.

Logo detail.
"Revealing this new logo celebrates our 30-year legacy and continued growth as one of the most successful dining destinations in the world," said Dave Henninger, chief marketing officer, Hooters of America. "We have already tested the contemporary design of the new Hootie with our customers and it was preferred 9 to 1 over our original logo, which will become part of our brand heritage."

New Hootie on Hooter girls.
New Logo for Hooters by Sky Design
Some kind of ad found on the Hooters of Davenport Facebook page. As long as they keep producing crap like this, no updated logo will ever make a difference.

The old logo — traced from an illustration found on a dictionary, according to this USA Today story — has always helped give Hooters that cheap, cheesy, smarmy vibe that one would associate with a highly successful chain of restaurants whose main attraction is women's cleavage. In terms of juvenile humor of using an owl (or hooter) and its big eyes as the "O"s in the name that also look like a pair of breasts is relatively ingenious. That, plus the giggle from anyone who sees the logo for the first time, is what has made this logo so iconic. The new logo keeps the boob equity of the original with a less, creepy taxidermic look by going with a more cartoonish approach. It's no more better than it's worse. It still exudes the same cheap, cheesy, smarmy vibe but with more bezier points than before. The typography appears to be slightly improved, but that's not saying much. Overall, it's a redesign that makes sense but one that doesn't lift the brand beyond what it already is.

Many thanks to our ADVx3 Partners

Curbed Maps: The Ultimate Clueless Map Guide to Los Angeles

by Adrian Glick Kudler
Kristen

Sorry if it is a reshaire

2013.07_cluelessmap.jpg

Clueless has reached the age of majority--it was released 18 years ago this past week, in a time when it really did (as Dan Hedaya's character argues) take 20 minutes to get anywhere in LA. That time has now roughly doubled, but Clueless endures, not just as a portrait of a certain class at a certain time (heroine Cher totally has a loqued-out Jeep), but also of Los Angeles in the mid-nineties, with its indoor malls, nouveau megamansions, Valley tract house parties, and "everywhere you go has valet." (Incidentally, director Amy Heckerling is totally the Jane Austen of Southern California in the late twentieth century--she also directed Fast Times at Ridgemont High.) Now, here, for you: a map guide to Clueless.

Model Behavior: How LA Model Chloe Nørgaard Maintains Her Technicolor Mane

by Natalie Alcala
Kristen

I am sharing this only because I can. I guess my feeds haven't updated in a few days.

ChloeNoorgard_2013_07.jpgImage via Into the Gloss

If you, too, were entranced by the neon-coiffed gal fronting this week's MINKPINK lookbook, her name is Chloe Nørgaard. Born in Cali and raised in Long Island, the LA-based ethereal beauty has quickly gained notoriety for her rainbow dye job, which inspired Rodarte to book her for their fall 2013 runway show during New York Fashion Week. Into the Gloss caught up with the Scandinavian-Danish looker to learn more about her bold head of hair:

Right now it's sort of like 'fire,' which I did myself three weeks ago—I always dye my hair myself. The yellow is Manic Panic Electric Banana. The orange is some weird brand, and the red is Beyond the Zone. I just get gloves and get really messy. It's like painting. I've fucked up so many towels and bathrooms. When I go to the beauty-supply store to shop for dye, I decide based on the colors available, not the brand. But I do like Manic Panic—some of their colors, like this yellow, glow in black lights. So when you're out at night, your head is literally glowing, which is amazing.

Read the full story here and, if you're feeling incredibly brave this week, brew up your own Manic Panic creation.

April 11, 2013

This B list foreign mostly television actor in his home country is probably a C- lister here despite his great role on one of the hittest cable shows out there right now. When our actor got his start he had a huge hit in his own country and then crashed and burned until his US hit now on the air. Why did he crash and burn? Apparently he decided he wanted to remain faithful to his wife and turned down lots of great roles because it would have involved casting couch time.

befreeandfit: Weight loss blog! Let’s do it together!! 🍉 yeah...

Kristen

everyone knows that old saying: a glass of water before bed prevents heart attack and stroke.

befreeandfit:

Weight loss blog! Let’s do it together!! 🍉

yeah I don’t know that there’s any science behind this. I mean drink your water, but a glass before a bath isn’t doing anything to your blood pressure (if anything more fluid raises your blood pressure as you’re filling up your vessels) - baths naturally lower your blood pressure because warmth makes you vasodilate (blood vessels open up), and so the pressure within those vessels drops.

the one about reducing heart attacks and strokes is bizarre, there is a very clear pathophysiology behind those & it’s not related to water.
