Silicon Valley: "Homicide" Review

by Cliff Wheatley

Spoilers for “Homicide” within.

Continuing their stroke of luck at the end of last episode, the Pied Piper crew races to show up Hooli after Nucleus’ UFC livestream debut is majorly botched. Erlich brings them to Homicide energy drink godfather and former “mentee” Double-A (Michael McMillian) to get Pied Piper some PR as the tech that makes the livestream for a Homicide-sponsored extreme stunt happen.

The end result gets the Pied Piper crew out of Erlich’s incubator and into the field, which is always a blast. Seeing their antics in a controlled environment is one thing, but seeing them operate in the “real world” brings it to a whole new level. Gilfoyle and Dinesh steal the show this time around, once again putting Jared’s overthought corporate tools to use for insane personal reasons (this time, it’s SWOTing).

BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE To Release 'Venom' Album In August; New Song 'No Way Out' Streaming

Welsh metallers BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE have set "Venom" as the title of their new album, due on August 14. The CD was recorded with producer Colin Richardson (CARCASS, FEAR FACTORY, MACHINE HEAD) and producer/engineer Carl Bown. A track from "Venom" called "No Way Out", will be released digitally tomorrow (Monday, May 18) and a lyric video for the song can now be seen below. Speaking about the band's mindset going into the songwriting process for the new CD, BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE guitarist/vocalist Matt Tuck told U.K.'s Metal Hammer magazine: "What we really wanted to capture was the feeling of that excitement, that angst and that anger, that you finally get in that moment to let the world know who you are and what you want to say. Then, as the albums go on, and you get a bit older, that goes away. So we're like, 'Let's recapture that angst of that younger, feisty BULLET that we used to be,' and fucking reignite that fire. And we totally have. We've just been writing stuff, and if it's not cool, we've been filtering it out. We've cut, like, 10 songs. That's a lot of effort and time and shit put into those songs, but it didn't feel right, so we put them in the bin." Asked about the slightly less aggressive musical direction of BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE's fourth album, "Temper Temper", compared to some of the group's earlier efforts, Tuck said: "I think, for me, it was just about letting your fucking hair down a bit. It always felt like we were being channelled towards something like radio and massive shows, and stuff like that — which is great, because that's obviously what we want, but it was like a diluted version of what we were. I don't think it's a bad album at all. I just think our fanbase wanted something a bit more feisty. It basically comes down to that. So this time around, we're fucking giving it to them, tenfold." BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE recently parted ways with bassist Jason James and replaced him with Jamie Mathias. The band said in a statement, "It is with regret that BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE has to announce that Jay James is no longer a member of the band. Jay has been a part of this band for well over 12 years and part of our lives forever, and we're gonna miss him as much as we know you guys are too. We wanna wish him all the best and success with whatever he chooses to do next and will always be grateful for his contribution and sacrifices he made for this band." Tuck told The Pulse Of Radio what is important to BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE when they're making a new record. "The big thing that we've learned is, like, you're not gonna please everyone all the time," he said. "As long as you do what you want to do and the band is happy and you feel you haven't given away your integrity, you know, I don't really care if people go, 'Oh, it's not metal enough, it's not heavy enough.' It's like, that's not what we are." The band also wrote online that 2015 is "shaping up to be a massive year for us, with lots of exciting things going on behind the scenes which we'll be announcing as soon as we can." "Temper Temper" came out in March of 2013. The band issued a brand new song called "Raising Hell" in November of that year, although it's not clear if that track will show up on the new album.

Dwayne Johnson Back for ‘Fast and Furious 8,’ Hobbs Spin-Off Still Possible

by Ethan Anderton

Dwayne Johnson in Fast and Furious 8

As of the beginning of April, there hadn’t been any public movement on Fast and Furious 8. However, once CinemaCon rolled around later that month, Universal Pictures got the hype machine started by announcing a release date on April 14th, 2017. And while there’s likely not a complete story developed for the sequel just yet, that hasn’t stopped one of the film’s stars from confirming that he will be back for more action. At a press conference for San Andreas (coming to theaters later this month), Dwayne Johnson revealed that we’ll definitely see him in Fast and Furious 8, and we may still get more Hobbs action in his own movie too.

Johnson didn’t have any extra details to divulge, but when asked about the sequel, he didn’t hesitate to confirm his eventual return (via Collider):

“Of course. It can’t go on without Hobbs.”

Considering Johnson injected new life into the action franchise, it’s difficult to disagree with him. Every sequel since he joined the series in Fast Five has continued to get bigger and arguably better. In addition, since Paul Walker will no longer be part of the franchise, Johnson’s presence is more important than ever.

However, fans are surely hoping that Johnson has much bigger role in Fast & Furious 8 than he had in Furious 7 last month. Even though he had one big fight in the beginning, followed by his own “save the day” sequence in the action-packed climax, Johnson was gone for pretty much the entire second act. Thankfully everything that happened without him was insane and awesome enough without him. But there’s also a chance we might get to see his character Hobbs in action without the rest of the Fast & Furious crew.

In case you hadn’t heard, there have been rumblings of a spin-off film focusing on Johnson as Hobbs in the lead role. Johnson was also asked about the possibility of that film happening, and while there hasn’t been any solid development, there’s still a chance it could come together. He says:

“We all are interested in it. I just had a big conversation with the studio. So we’ll see. I still think for me personally we’ve created a little bit of space for him in 7 and the gauge is set for what  the audience will want. That’s my take on it, you know, but a lot of other people have to have input.”

While Johnson is undoubtedly a box office draw, I think a lot of the appeal of Hobbs as a character comes from the dynamic he has with the rest of the Fast & Furious crew now. There’s a mutual sense of respect and loyalty that Hobbs has with Vin Diesel as Dom, and I also love how he interacts with Tyrese Gibson as Roman and Ludacris as Tej for comic relief. And if Hobbs gets his own flick, that won’t happen.

While I don’t have a doubt that Johnson can lead his own film set in the Fast & Furious universe, we’ve already seen Johnson lead his own team into action in G.I. Joe: Retaliation, so it might just be a little too familiar territory. But then again, he’ll be doing something similar with the action comedy Alpha Squad Seven, so we might just have to get used to that (which won’t be hard). Either way, it’s good to know that we’ll get more of Dwayne Johnson in Fast and Furious 8. Otherwise, all we know is that the film might take place in New York this time, which would be a nice change of pace. Stay tuned for more updates.

Are you happy to hear we’ll see Dwayne Johnson in Fast and Furious 8? Does he deserve his own spin-off?

Ned Stark's Bean Talks Jon Snow's Lineage

by Evan Campbell

Ned Stark actor Sean Bean appears to agree with a popular Game of Thrones fan theory regarding Jon Snow's parentage. But read on no further if you fear even the implication of a theory of a possible idea...

According to Bean, whose character is said to be the father of the bastard Jon Snow, it could be that the former Warden of the North is not Snow's dad at all.

Bean has been open with his suspicions that Ned Stark wasn't Jon Snow's father before. So Vulture asked the actor about the theory that Snow is actually the child of Ned's sister, Lyanna Stark, and Rhaegar Targaryen.

‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ Is Spectacular Action Filmmaking

by Russ Fischer

Mad Max Fury Road review

Mad Max: Fury Road is fearless behind the wheel, a vivid collection of action setpieces unified by a dream of upending the very concept of the action hero. In 1981, director and co-writer George Miller used concepts from Jung and Joseph Campbell to supercharge the image of the screen hero for The Road Warrior, a return to the Mad Max character he created with Mel Gibson, but Fury Road’s version of heroism is even more forward-thinking.

Fury Road implicitly acknowledges that Miller’s old heroic conception may have been incomplete. It pairs Tom Hardy as Max with a woman named Furiosa, played with controlled yet intuitive ferocity by Charlize Theron. He’s the hero as raw energy; she is that energy channeled in a way that might be able to build a society.

With Theron and Hardy in the lead roles and Miller again in the driver’s seat, Fury Road isn’t just good enough to obliterate the lingering sting of the last film (Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, released in 1985), but so good that it rivals The Road Warrior and shames all of Hollywood’s current action tendencies. This film develops its own specific ambition by placing dueling concepts about heroism into the framework of one of the best action movies I’ve ever seen.

Unmoored in time, the story could be a sequel to any of the previous Mad Max films. Tom Hardy’s Max might be the same character played previously by Mel Gibson, or he might be someone else. It doesn’t entirely matter. The change in leading man offers Miller the chance to use the Road Warrior‘s conception of Max as a jumping-off point, and to take him in a subtly but distinctly new direction.

The future, whenever it is, is bleak. Hope, as Max advises, “is a mistake,” and that should be one clue of many that maybe this guy isn’t really our hero. Hardy’s Max keeps the pedal to the metal even when it comes to being “mad” — he is all but insane, a hollowed-out husk of a man reduced to little more than a bundle of survival instincts wrapped around memories of failure. Asked to give his name at one point Max wonders what the point would be, but this guy is so far gone in some ways that I wonder if he even remembers his humanity, much less his identity.

Furiosa, by contrast, has a dream and a plan, fueled by a cold-fusion core of rage. Max’s name may be in the title, but Furiosa is the prime motivator. Theron reconfigures Max’s determination and capable skills into a more persuasive hero — she’s suffered through hard times and come out the other side with a purpose, and the willingness to sacrifice to see it through.

She has liberated a group of young women, conscripted as “wives” and hidden away by warlord Immortan Joe. Infuriated as much by the brazen rebellion of Furiosa’s act as he is at the loss of his “property,” Joe leads a pursuit convoy of War Boys, young men ready for glorious death in battle. (Liberated slogans are painted in the wives’ imprisoning chambers like final invective: “our babies will not be warlords” and “we are not things.”)

This is a rock opera, painted in vivid colors with great maelstroms of kinetic energy. Dialogue is sparse. Hardy maybe says a couple dozen lines. Some of it is obviously not even meant to be deciphered — it’s dialogue as color for a scene, a successful version of the experiment Christopher Nolan performed with Interstellar. A few scenes that do rely heavily on dialogue teeter on the razor-thin line between “over the top” and simple parody.

Stripped down to base essentials, this is an film of binary groups: those with wheels and those without; the saved and the unsaved; male tendencies and female. But it is curious enough to explore the grey areas between. The black and white-painted War Boy played in a career-best turn by Nicholas Hoult dives surprisingly deep into the idea of finding salvation through violent death. Or, to point at a small detail, there’s the pairing of plant seeds and “anti-seeds,” a term one character uses for bullets. Plant seeds are an explicitly feminine concept here, but Immortan Joe’s stronghold is the only place of green for hundreds of miles, and the best shooters, sowers of “anti-seeds,” are all women.

So it is disappointing that the five Wives are less fully realized. Played by Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Riley Keough, Zoë Kravitz, Abbey Lee Kershaw, and Courtney Eaton, they are character types (the fighter, the weird one, the caregiver, etc.) rather than full characters.

Warner Bros. has been quite savvy in linking The Vagina Monologues author Eve Ensler to the film as a consultant on the Wives’ backstory, but you’d be hard-pressed to guess based on the film. Rarely, if ever, do the Wives seem like characters who have spent a lifetime suffering sexual slavery; rather, they are at times sexualized in what seems to be an unsuccessful play at genre commentary. It’s the only place Fury Road falters, but it’s a significant one.

Elsewhere, Miller & co. are confident in bringing weird ideas to life. Immortan Joe, played by Mad Max veteran Hugh Keays-Byrne, is a brilliantly grotesque parody of an image-conscious leader, hidden behind a ferociously toothy mask and shrouded in plastic body armor that simultaneously protects him and makes him look like a vigorously youthful warrior. His political power is almost religious; young War Boys are ready and eager to die at his command, smiling as they do at the thought of riding acts of violent glory to Valhalla.

Subtle? Not for a moment. Effective? Very. The world in Fury Road is convincing and whole, and every grotesque bit feels like it belongs.

And the stunt work. Oh, the stunts. Whatever it is — the athleticism of today’s stunt performers, the ability to plan setpieces with computer modeling, or the need to be bigger and better — the stunt performances in Fury Road are nothing short of astonishing. Any given visual idea could be the best part of another movie; here that idea is followed by a dozen more. The extensive rolling setpieces are wild series of ideas that smash cars together, destroy vehicles with abandon, and launch motorcycles and pole-mounted warriors airborne in exquisite displays of physical ingenuity.

(Calls for the addition of an Academy Award recognizing stunt work get louder every year, and this team, including Keir Beck, Dayna Grant, Guy Norris, Richard Norton, and Greg van Borssum, deserves to be recognized in the same way other principle creators have been. This movie is nothing without them.)

As good as the stunts are, Miller’s direction is mind-boggling in its exactitude. Most action films are split between primary and secondary unit work. Fury Road did feature multiple units working in tandem, but here there’s no difference between action and story scenes. It’s all one whirlwind, with Miller at the center.

One word captures Miller’s action staging: clarity. Fury Road has some of the clearest action direction I’ve seen in any film. There’s never a point in where I was at a loss for where characters were, what they were moving toward, and how the many intersecting paths lead to important collisions. Major and minor characters are tracked through the constantly-moving chaos, and Miller, cinematographer John Seale, and editor Margaret Sixel juggle them all without dropping a single one.

At times I dream of Fury Road shot on film; my more rational mind knows there’s no way this movie would exist shot on film. Shooting digital, cameras could run endlessly allowing the convoy of vehicles to keep rolling through take after take. In so doing, Miller and his crew apparently captured every moment they needed to build action scenes that burst with chaotic frenzy, in which every character movement is clearly tracked.

Films are built painstakingly in fractions, one moment at a time, but Fury Road is like a thing born in an explosion, roaring to life fully formed as the end product of some cinematic Big Bang. It feels more new than we have a right to expect from any sequel, and even with missteps in mind is bracingly progressive, and a triumphant return for George Miller.

Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne Will Star in ‘Valerian’ from Luc Besson

by Russ Fischer

Valérian and Laureline movie

Luc Besson, coming off the surprise smash Lucy, is preparing to adapt a long-running and influential set of Belgian science fiction stories co-created by one of his visual designers on The Fifth Element. The Valérian and Laureline stories feature a pair of galactic adventurers on wide-ranging missions across space and time. The two characters debuted in 1967 in comics by Pierre Christin and Jean-Claude Mezieres, the latter of whom ended up working on The Fifth Element. Besson has planned to make a film adapting the comics for the past couple years, and now he’s in position to move forward.

So Besson will write and direct his Valérian and Laureline movie — called Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, with Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne starring in the lead roles.

First, a bit about the characters:

The intrepid Valerian and his beautiful, sharp-witted and sharp-tounged partner, Laureline, are tow of the greatest agents for the vast Galaxity organization. Their missions have taken them across space and time. But now the Galaxity and their home earth have vanished as if they never existed. Along, and totally dependent on their own resources, they struggle to carve out a new life and a new future against intergalactic dangers form the past, present and future. English translations of French albums.

Luc Besson announced the film on Twitter, suggesting along the way that the second Valerian collection, The Empire of a Thousand Planets, would be part of the basis for the film. The idea is to shoot later in 2015 for a 2017 release.

Nicole Kidman Joins Neil Gaiman Adaptation ‘How to Talk to Girls at Parties’

by Germain Lussier

How to Talk to Girls At Parties Nicole Kidman

The title “How to Talk to Girls at Parties” brings to mind something very specific, yet this movie is not at all what you think it’s going to be. Clue one: it is based on a short story by Neil Gaiman, the writer behind Sandman and Stardust. Clue two: it’ll be co-written and directed by John Cameron Mitchell, the creator of Hedwig and the Angry Inch and, most recently, the director of Rabbit Hole. That heartbreaking film starred Nicole Kidman and she’ll reteam with the director for this one. So what’s it about? It’s a musically charged, Romeo and Juliet-influenced, love story involving punks and aliens.

As previously reported, Elle Fanning is still attached, and they’ll be joined by Matt Lucas and Ruth Wilson. Read more about How to Talk to Girls At Parties below.

ScreenDaily broke the How to Talk to Girls At Parties news. They say Kidman is in “advanced talks,” which sounds pretty definite. The deal came together at the Cannes Film Festival.

How to Talk to Girls at Parties was originally a short story in Gaiman’s 2006 collection Fragile Things. In the film version, which is slightly streamlined, Fanning will play an alien rock star touring the galaxy who breaks away and ends up in a London suburb called Croydon. There she meets a boy.

Shooting will likely start this Fall and producer Howard Gertler said the following about the project:

This is a story that appeals to teens and adults, something John and Neil Gaiman’s work also achieves, and that is why it’s such a good fit…. John compares it to Romeo and Juliet, except instead of Montagues and Capulets we have punks and aliens.

As wonderful as Kidman and Fanning are as actresses, what really gets me excited for this film is John Cameron Mitchell. Hedwig and the Angry Inch is a legitimate masterpiece and Rabbit Hole was deeply affecting. He doesn’t direct a lot so if there’s a project he’s passionate about, especially one that seems as weird as this one, I’m totally in.

What are your think about How to Talk to Girls at Parties?

New ‘Minions’ Trailer: Discover the Origins of Everyone’s Favorite Yellow Bad Guys

by Germain Lussier

New Minions Trailer

Pretty much everyone knows Minions is going to be a big hit. The wild, yellow characters are incredibly popular with kids and adults alike, so the fact they’ve got their own movie hitting theaters this summer is a slam dunk. At this point, it comes down to one thing: is the movie good? If it isn’t, the film will still be a success. But if it is good, it could be one of the biggest animated films of all time. The Minions are that well-liked.

A new 3-plus-minute trailer obviously can’t speak to the film’s quality, but it can speak to its scope (very big), its humor (silly, with an adult edge) and its voice cast (incredibly impressive).  The film is set 42 years before the events of the first Despicable Me, which pretty much makes it a period piece, too. Minions opens July 10, watch the latest trailer below.

Here’s the latest trailer via Illumination.

New Minions trailer

Minions, directed by Pierre Coffin and Kyle Balda, features the voices of Sandra Bullock, Jon Hamm, Michael Keaton, Allison Janney and Steve Coogan. It opens July 10 and here’s the full press release:

The story of Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment’s Minions begins at the dawn of time.  Starting as single-celled yellow organisms, Minions evolve through the ages, perpetually serving the most despicable of masters.  Continuously unsuccessful at keeping these masters—from T. rex to Napoleon—the Minions find themselves without someone to serve and fall into a deep depression.

But one Minion named Kevin has a plan, and he—alongside teenage rebel Stuart and lovable little Bob—ventures out into the world to find a new evil boss for his brethren to follow.

The trio embarks upon a thrilling journey that ultimately leads them to their next potential master, Scarlet Overkill (Academy Award winner Sandra Bullock), the world’s first-ever female super-villain.  They travel from frigid Antarctica to 1960s New York City, ending in mod London, where they must face their biggest challenge to date: saving all of Minionkind…from annihilation.

Featuring a soundtrack of hit music from the ’60s that still permeates our culture today,Minions is produced by Illumination’s Chris Meledandri and Janet Healy, and is directed by Pierre Coffin and Kyle Balda.  Brian Lynch has written the screenplay for the 3D-CG comedy adventure, and Chris Renaud serves as executive producer of the film. www.minionsmovie.com

Is the Hulk in ‘Captain America: Civil War’?

by Angie Han

Bruce Banner Age of Ultron

Although it’s billed as a Captain America movie, Civil War at this point has a cast big enough to rival any Avengers team-up. Still, not every character in the MCU made it in, and one name that was conspicuously absent was Mark Ruffalo. Or so we thought. A recent post by Ruffalo suggests the Hulk may be joining his Avengers teammates for Captain America: Civil War after all. More about the possible Captain America Civil War Hulk casting after the jump.

Ruffalo has been dropping hints all over social media. First, here’s a tweet from him:

The Marvel family gets just a little bit bigger. http://t.co/0PnXdLhGTP @captainamerica #CivilWar

— Mark Ruffalo (@MarkRuffalo) May 14, 2015

That link takes you to Ruffalo’s official Tumblr site, which then links to Marvel Studios’ official press release about the start of production on Captain America: Civil War. On Tumblr, Ruffalo writes:

Welcome to the wild party! Looking forward to this amazing cast.

Now, Ruffalo never actually comes out and says he’s in Captain America: Civil War. It’s possible this is just an innocent welcome the newest additions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. (Or a not-so-innocent joke he’s playing on fans.) But the wording could also be interpreted to mean he’ll appear in the movie with them.

It’s worth pointing out that one of the more surprising inclusions in Captain America: Civil War is General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross (played by William Hurt), who was a supporting character in The Incredible Hulk. And if he’s getting caught up in the so-called Civil War, it’s not hard to imagine Bruce Banner a.k.a. the Hulk getting involved, too.

The last time we saw Bruce Banner / the Hulk in Avengers: Age of Ultron (spoilers follow; skip to the next paragraph if you don’t want to know), he was running away in a jet. His Hulk-out in Johannesburg has made it clear to him and to the rest of the world that he’s very dangerous, and besides that he was worried about hurting his lady love Black Widow. In short, we don’t really know where he is right now, let alone where he’ll be by the time Captain America: Civil War kicks off. (End spoilers.)

If Ruffalo is indeed in Captain America: Civil War, that means Thor (Chris Hemsworth) will be the only Avenger left out. Cap (Chris Evans), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) are all back from Avengers: Age of Ultron, as are Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), Vision (Paul Bettany), Falcon (Anthony Mackie), and War Machine (Don Cheadle).

Returning from Captain America: The Winter Soldier will be Crossbones (Frank Grillo), Bucky (Sebastian Stan), and Sharon Carter (Emily VanCamp). Ant-Man (Paul Rudd), who makes his MCU debut this summer, is also on board. And characters who’ll make their MCU debuts in Civil War include Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), Baron Helmut Zemo (Daniel Brühl), Spider-Man (TBA), and whomever Martin Freeman is playing.

Captain America: Civil War opens May 6, 2016.

“Captain America: Civil War” picks up where “Avengers: Age of Ultron” left off, as Steve Rogers leads the new team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. After another international incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability and a governing body to determine when to enlist the services of the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers while they try to protect the world from a new and nefarious villain.

7 Major 'Game Of Thrones' Theories That Actually Can't Happen On The Show Now

by Bill Bradley
It's tough out there for a "Game of Thrones" fan. Your favorite characters are always dying, your friends keep changing their HBO Go passwords and now the show is deviating from the books more than ever.

tv show gifs
Image: HuffPost/HBO

We're talking Littlefinger is returning to King's Landing, Barristan the Bold has died and, oh yeah, Sansa is marrying Ramsay! May the Seven help us all ...

To top it all off, now George R.R. Martin is saying the show has become so different that shocking twists he has planned for the book just won't be able to happen on HBO.

In honor of all the twists fans of the show will never see, here are seven major theories that likely would only happen in the books:

1. Robb Stark's wife is alive, and she's pregnant.

Image: BlogSpot

Breaking a marriage pact is definitely not the smartest move, but flaunting your new wife in front of the family you disgraced is just straight up dumb. That's why in Martin's novel, A Storm of Swords, the Starks never bring Robb's wife to the Red Wedding. She stays at Riverrun, where the Lannisters and Freys eventually put the castle under siege.

After the castle is surrendered in the book, Jaime Lannister notes that the girl has "narrow hips" and is "not a girl to lose a kingdom for," which is in contrast to an earlier Catelyn Stark chapter:

She was pretty, undeniably, with her chestnut curls and heart-shaped face, and that shy smile. Slender, but with good hips, Catelyn noted. She should have no trouble bearing children at least.

This has led to the belief that Robb's wife may have been switched out before the castle was surrendered and may even be pregnant with the King in the North's heir.

Why it can't happen in the show:
Robb's wife is pretty dead at this point. The character from the books, Jeyne Westerling, was replaced by Talisa Maegyr in the show. In the books, Jeyne is reportedly appearing in the prologue to Martin's The Winds of Winter, but Talisa was murdered in the show at the Red Wedding.

The North remembers ...

2. Tywin was secretly poisoned by Oberyn and was already dying when Tyrion killed him.

tywin
From Reddit to A Forum of Ice and Fire, it's widely accepted that Oberyn had already poisoned Tywin before Tyrion finished the job. A number of clues support this: Oberyn was a poison expert; Martin specifically has Pycelle mention a poison called "Widow's Blood" during Tyrion's trial, which "shuts down a man's bladder and bowels, until he drowns in his own poisons"; and, of course, Tyrion found Tywin on the toilet, where he seems to have been for a while.

Why it can't happen in the show:
Perhaps the strongest piece of evidence that Tywin was poisoned is the disgusting stench his body gives off, which isn't mentioned in the show. His body, for whatever reason, is decaying so poorly and smells so bad that it even makes Tommen cry. The fact that the stench and other gross details were left out of the show makes it appear that this possible storyline was cut.

3. Tyrion's first wife is alive, and he has a daughter.

Image: Tumblr

Tyrion was actually married one time before Sansa, but, in "Game of Thrones" style, it ended tragically. Tywin thought she was a commoner after money, so he had Jaime convince Tyrion that her love wasn't real and then made Tyrion watch as Lannister guards raped her. (Holy crap! Maybe Tyrion should've loaded that crossbow a couple more times.) Her name was Tysha, and as user nekrohsis explains on A Forum of Ice and Fire, we may not have seen the last of her:

There's a theory that the Sailor's Wife, a prostitute in Braavos, is actually Tysha, as evidenced by her trick of wedding the men who bed her, her fluency in the Common Tongue, and her daughter, the golden-haired Lanna (for Lannister?) who is the right age to be Tyrion's daughter.

Why it can't happen in the show:
In the HBO version, Tyrion kills Tywin after he keeps calling Shae a whore, but in the books Tywin is actually calling Tysha a whore. Shae seems to have replaced Tysha in the show as Tyrion's true love. Because of that, it's doubtful she'll be included.

4. The Night's King is secretly helping Bran.

niths
On his journey to the Three-Eyed Crow (or Raven, whichever you prefer), Bran meets someone dressed like a man from the Night's Watch. This dude's hands are black, he wears a scarf to cover his face and he also doesn't breathe. In the books, this guy is known as Coldhands, and a popular theory was that his true identity is Benjen Stark. Unfortunately, Martin seems to have shot that down in an early book draft, so now a leading theory is that Coldhands is actually the Night's King.

Why it can't happen in the show:
Coldhands should've shown up when Bran first started his journey beyond the Wall, so he was clearly cut from the HBO show. Plus, we've already seen the Night's King turning babies into ice people, so this theory is just for the books.

5. Daenerys has a nephew, and he's after the throne.

Image: Tumblr

In A Dance with Dragons, you meet a character named Young Griff, whose secret identity is supposedly Aegon Targaryen, Rhaegar's son. He was one of the kids Oberyn accused the Mountain of killing. The story goes that Varys switched babies before the Mountain got to them and smuggled Aegon out of King's Landing to safety. There are various theories as to if he's a true Targaryen or not.

Why it can't happen in the show:
As Vanity Fair explains, the part of Aegon hasn't been announced for this season, and the show has already gone past the point where the character comes in. It appears Dany may be the last Targaryen after the throne after all.

6. Brienne gets killed by Lady Stoneheart.

brienne
In the books, Brienne discovers Catelyn Stark has become a zombified version of herself after she received the gift of life from Beric Dondarrion. Zombie Catelyn is known as Lady Stoneheart and is hellbent on revenge against those who wronged her family. Brienne's storyline is left on a cliffhanger in A Feast for Crows, and you're led to believe she was hanged by Stoneheart's men for not promising to kill Jaime Lannister.

The theory says she was in fact hanged and possibly brought back to life by Lady Stoneheart in the same way Stoneheart was brought back by Dondarrion. In A Dance with Dragons, Jaime's thoughts on Brienne's appearance supports the theory that she didn't escape the noose:

Gods be good, she looks ten years older than when I saw her last. And what’s happened to her face?

Why it can't happen in the show:
It's already been reported that there aren't official plans to have Lady Stoneheart in the show, so this whole storyline appears to have been cut.

7. Jojen was sacrificed and gets eaten by Bran.

Image: Tumblr

After arriving at the Three-Eyed Crow, Bran is given paste that makes him feel ill at first and looks like blood. It's theorized that this contains Jojen Reed's blood and that he was sacrificed so his greendreams could help enhance Bran's abilities.

In addition to the paste, Jojen, who supposedly knows the day he will die, gets increasingly depressed on the journey; Bran can't find Meera and Jogen after eating the paste; and there are ominous clues leading up to the paste moment, such as this one about Jojen's somber mood:

“I’d hoped that when we found your three-eyed crow … now I wonder why we ever came.”
For me, Bran thought. “His greendreams,” he said. “His greendreams.” Meera’s voice was bitter.

Why it can't happen in the show:
Jojen Reed was killed by a wight in the Season 4 finale, and then he was blown to pieces by a giant fireball for good measure. Also, Bran reportedly won't be appearing in Season 5. Still, Meera should probably sleep with one eye open.

Though they may differ, it's probably best to just accept the show and the books the way they are, or there's always Cersei's strategy ...

Fox Affiliate Faces Backlash After Censoring Breasts On Record-Breaking Picasso Painting

by Dominique Mosbergen
A Fox affiliate came under fire this week for censoring cubist images of breasts on a record-breaking Pablo Picasso painting.

Fox 5 News, New York City's local Fox affiliate, ran a segment Monday night on the $179 million auction of Picasso’s ”Les Femmes d'Alger" (Version O), now the most expensive painting in the world.

"We decided to blur the nude portions so that we could show it to you on air," anchor Dari Alexander said, per Mediaite.

Glad @FoxNews is protecting its audience from Picasso's smutty mind. Wouldn't want to scare the children. pic.twitter.com/Mbv2C8unPs

— Aruna D'Souza (@arunadsouza) May 12, 2015

Art historian Aruna D’Souza tweeted her disdain at the station’s censorship decision. New York magazine art critic Jerry Saltz later did the same, as did many bemused netizens.

— Jerry Saltz (@jerrysaltz) May 14, 2015

In the wake of the criticism, Fox 5 admitted it had made a mistake.

"It was ridiculous," the Fox 5 morning news crew said.

On Thursday, the station shared the painting “in all its glory” on its Facebook page.

“We get it,” Fox 5 wrote. “A blurred out version of Pablo Picasso’s masterpiece … wasn’t the best move.”

Person of Interest: Season 4 Review

by Matt Fowler

Warning: Full spoilers for Person of Interest Season 4...

Looking back at what may in fact be the final full 22-episode season of Person of Interest, I'm filled with both sadness and satisfaction. I don't exactly want Season 5 to be the show's final run, nor do I want the show to run for too long. One yearns for that sweet spot where a great series gets to end things at the perfect moment on its own terms.

But we, as viewers, also want/need to know when that end will be. Up until a few weeks ago, Person of Interest's fate was never really in question. Now its fifth season has been pushed to midseason, with a reduced episode order, and CBS is refusing to commit to it being the end. An optimistic omen, but also a frustrating one. Still, it'll be interesting to see how the next 13 episodes play out regardless. End or not. Because, essentially, the reduced order makes way for a POI that's just might be fully serialized. Especially when you consider that the Season 4 finale left the series without its "case of the week" mechanism.

Nina Dobrev Is Ready To Tackle Life After 'The Vampire Diaries'

by Stephanie Marcus
On Thursday, Nina Dobrev will make her final appearance on the "The Vampire Diaries," after six years of playing Elena Gilbert.

It's an emotional time for the 26-year-old actress, who revealed she would not be returning for Season 7 back in April.

“I’ve loved working on this show. It’s been such a crazy, awesome adventure, and I’ve been surrounded by so many people who I consider family. I know this is a new exciting step in the right direction for me, but it’s going to be so strange not to be with them," Dobrev told Self magazine for their June cover story.

While saying goodbye to her star-making role has been difficult, Dobrev is excited for what lies ahead. The actress, who got her start on "Degrassi: The Next Generation," is first planning a cross-country road trip with six friends and is more than game to take on the new challenges that await her in her career. "I’m ready to put up that fight again. I’m excited to put up that fight," she told Self.

Person of Interest: CBS Deciding if Season 5 is Final Season

by Eric Goldman

While CBS has renewed Person of Interest for another season, it was given a reduced order – not the full 22 episodes that has been customary. And when CBS announced their fall schedule today, Person of Interest was not on it, revealing it will be held for midseason, all of which is making many wonder if this means the series is going into its final season.

At CBS' Upfront press event this morning, I asked CBS president Nina Tassler what she could say about whether Season 5 will be the end for the show. Tassler revealed it was at least a possibility, replying, “We’re having those conversations with the team right now,” noting going into the new season of any show, they discuss the plan for the new year with the executive producers.

Person of Interest Renewed - But Will it Be the Final Season?

by Eric Goldman

UPDATE: Deadline is now reporting that while Person of Interest was renewed, it was the only one of CBS's drama series renewals today to only get a partial pickup, not the full 22 episodes normally ordered. According to Deadline, POI's renewal was likely for 13 episodes.

This quickly raises questions about whether this will be Person of Interest's final season, as a reduced episode count often indicates - just like CBS did for The Mentalist this past season. The Mentalist, like Person of Interest, was produced by Warner Bros. and Deadline notes POI is the only one of CBS' renewals today to not be owned by the network, which often can be a hindrance as a show ages (for shows that aren't outright blockbusters) as there is less incentive for the network to keep them on the air when they aren't profitable for them in their secondary life.

10 Years Ago Today: Shacknews remembers Leeroy Jenkins

by Ozzie Mejia

World of Warcraft has been a cultural phenomenon for most of the 21st century. It's spread across many facets of pop culture, including numerous references and parodies that span all the way to its own episode of South Park. It's defined an entire genre of video games, taking the torch from Everquest and never letting it go.

As such a major institution, World of Warcraft's fanbase has also helped contribute to its ongoing popularity, with artwork, fiction, and even videos. However, no video has become more recognizable and a greater part of World of Warcraft than one submitted by a man named Leeroy.

On this day ten years ago, Leeroy uploaded this video to the fan site WarCraft Movies. An entire party of WoW players, a guild called Pals For Life, were preparing to enter the Upper Blackrock Spire, an area of the game filled with dragonspawn. The entire party spent over a minute discussing their strategy through the game's voice chat.

"What we'll do, I'll run in, gather up the eggs, blast them all with AoE," it all began and went from there. There was a back and forth between the party members, since this raid was one of the most difficult of the game. Everything had to be planned to the second. They needed number crunches. They had to have their timing hashed out. Everyone needed to be ready. But as they were still in the planning phase, they heard one of their party members yell abrasively over the microphone.

"LEEEEEEEEERRRRRRROOOOOOYYYYYYYY JEEEEEEEEEEEENNKKKKIIIINNNNNNSSSSSS!!!"

The party suddenly realized that one of their members had stupidly rushed in without waiting, so they all went in after him and the rest is history.

The video spread like wildfire over the internet in the following days, months, and years. The original video was posted to YouTube years later, where it currently has over 43 million views. It left such a lasting impression that Blizzard immortalized the character by making Leeroy Jenkins a part of its storied lore. Leeroy was made a part of the Alliance in the World of Warcraft Trading Card Game, a Paladin with the tendency to rush in without thinking. The MMORPG itself also honored the character by adding the Jenkins achievement to Patch 3.0.2, which was awarded after killing 50 rookery whelps in 15 seconds.

And of course, Leeroy has found a home in Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft, as one of the game's strongest Legendary characters. In fact, Leeroy was so strong, he needed to be nerfed at one point.

Meanwhile, the real Leeroy Jenkins is known as Ben Schulz, a WoW user from Denver, Colorado. His legend quickly spread after the video was uploaded. He would stay a major part of the WoW scene for years, with Blizzard even inviting him to BlizzCon 2007 to work the commentary team for that year's WoW tournament. Shortly afterwards, Schulz retired from WoW and focused on his college career, where he focus on becoming an electrical engineer.

Even with Schulz stepping away from WoW and Leeroy, the man has left his mark on the world of video games for years to come. It isn't just the character's induction in Blizzard lore, the numerous parodies, or even the Jeopardy! question. Leeroy's legacy is also in helping launch YouTube as a viral marketing phenomenon for gaming. He was the voice everyone recognized before the word "meme" become common lexicon. Before the Borderlands Claptrap shorts, there was Leeroy. Before the many mod fail videos of Grand Theft Auto V, there was Leeroy. Before the Team Fortress 2 shorts, there was Leeroy. Leeroy Jenkins helped launch an entirely new way to enjoy video games, one that (ironically, enough) didn't involve playing them.

There's nothing more to say. Time's up! Let's do this!
