Jonás Cuarón’s Futuristic ‘Zorro’ Reboot Casts Gael García Bernal

by Angie Han

Gael Garcia Bernal in Mozart in the Jungle

The new Zorro has a new Zorro. Gael García Bernal has been cast as the legendary swashbuckler in Z, a futuristic reboot to be directed by García Bernal’s Desierto director Jonás Cuarón. (Because they don’t have Rs or Os in the future, I guess?) García Bernal was previously attached to an earlier iteration of this project which was in development several years ago.

Deadline broke the news of the Gael García Bernal Zorro casting. García Bernal was first linked to the Zorro role back in 2012, when he was set to star in Zorro Reborn, a version of the classic Zorro mythology set in the future. That version of the project never took off, however, and earlier this year Cuarón signed on to write and direct an entirely “fresh take” that would “start from scratch.” All we know about this one is that it will also be set in the future.

Said producer Mark Amin, who was also involved with the Zorro Reborn movie that never was:

I have always loved Gael for this role. Zorro is a hero who is charming, witty and clever. Gael possesses all those characteristic and he’s able to deliver them with a modern spin to introduce the Zorro character to a new audience.

Cuarón, son of director Alfonso Cuarón, last directed Desierto, which stars García Bernal as a migrant worker who comes into the crosshairs of an American vigilante as he tries to cross the U.S.-Mexico border. The film hit the festival circuit last year and will be released by STX Entertainment sometime this year. Before that, Cuarón made his directing debut on Year of the Nail and filmed a Gravity spinoff short, Aningaaq.

García Bernal recently picked up a Golden Globe for his starring role on Amazon’s Mozart in the Jungle. His other credits include Werner Herzog’s upcoming Salt and Fire, Jon Stewart’s RosewaterThe Motorcycle DiariesBabel, and, going back a ways, Y Tu Mamá También and Amores Perros.

Shooting on Z begins this fall at Pinewood Dominican Republic studios.

Daniel Brühl Climbs Aboard J.J. Abrams-Produced ‘God Particle’

by Angie Han

Daniel Bruhl in Captain America Civil War

Hot off of his villainous turn in Captain America: Civil War, Daniel Brühl is getting ready to launch himself into outer space. He’s the latest star to climb aboard the J.J. Abrams-produced sci-fi thriller God Particle, joining David Oyelowo, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, John Krasinski, and Elizabeth Debicki. Julius Onah (The Girl Is in Trouble) is directing for Paramount.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news of the Daniel Brühl God Particle casting. Brühl and the others will play astronauts on a mission aboard a space station. After a scientific experiment causes Earth to disappear, they find themselves all alone in space. Then a space shuttle appears, and the crew must find out whether it spells salvation or doom. Considering that earlier reports on God Particle have mentioned the crew “desperately fighting for survival,” I’m guessing doom.

God Particle is speculated to be the next film to fall under the Cloverfield banner. All the pieces seem to be there — an original sci-fi premise, a relatively modest budget, a promising young director, and an impeccable cast. Nothing’s been confirmed on that front, but keep in mind that 10 Cloverfield Lane wasn’t released as a Cloverfield “blood relative” until shortly before release, either. It may be a while before we know for sure either way.

Whether or not God Particle turns out to be a Cloverfield movie, Onah and Bad Robot have assembled a really impressive mix of talents for this one, and Brühl seems like a fantastic addition. Most of these stars are somewhere between “up-and-comer” and “household name” — they have the talent and the charisma to break out in a big way, but haven’t gotten there quite yet. They’re also, for the most part, actors who haven’t really worked together, so it should be interesting to see how they bounce off of each other.

Brühl’s first big breakthrough came in the early 2000s with the German film Good Bye, Lenin!, and he became even better known to an international audience with 2009’s Inglourious Basterds. Since then, he’s appeared in Ron Howard’s Rush (for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe), Anton Corbijn’s A Most Wanted Man, the Julian Assange biopic The Fifth Estate, and, most recently, Captain America: Civil War. He’ll next be seen in the war drama The Zookeeper’s Wife opposite Jessica Chastain.

Best Tablets for Kids 2017

by Christine Lachance

If you're in the market for kid-friendly tablets, we've got a list of contenders.

Every kid wants a tablet. They're fun, portable, easy to use, and they keep the little ones entertained. If your children have seen you working (or playing) on a tablet, chances are they want to play, too.

Deciding to invest in a tablet for your child is a big step, and there are a number of qualities to consider: price, parental controls, and perhaps most importantly, durability. We've read the reviews, asked around, and brought together the tablets we believe will be the best for your kids .

Amazon Fire 7 Kids Edition

The only tablet that offers a two-year, no-questions-asked warranty is Amazon's. If the unthinkable happens to the Fire 7 Kids Edition, or if you know your kids tend to be hard on their toys, this is peace of mind included in the price of the product. Running the mature and fast Fire OS, the only thing missing is Google's services, but Amazon's Appstore is stocked with lots of apps and games.

It comes with one year of Amazon FreeTime Unlimited, which allows your child to access over 10,000 apps, games, shows, movies, and books, all kid-tested and parent-approved. Parent mode, which is accessed with a password, gives you the opportunity to share media that your kids need your permission to get into. It also helps keep little fingers away from your Amazon account, which is pretty important.

The latest update to the Fire Kids Edition bases it on the "all new" Fire 7, which brings a better screen, improved battery life and dual-band Wi-Fi for better connectivity. If you want a different case, there are plenty out there to choose from, or you can get it in blue, pink or yellow for about $70.

LeapFrog Epic Academy Kids Tablet

LeapFrog was one of the first tablet-style devices made just for kids. Until recently, parents had to purchase cartridges in order to get games or educational materials for LeapFrog products, but the latest versions of its tablets have eliminated the cartridges in favor of Wi-Fi and an Android-based OS. Now that everything can be downloaded, just like a regular "grown up" tablet, you'll never have to go searching for little green cartridges again.

This version comes with a three-month trial to LeapFrog academy, a learning service aimed at 3-9-year-olds. It also has a reassuring 2-year guarantee since, you know, kids.

The Epic Academy edition has 16GB of internal storage and a microSD card slot if you need more. While it's running an ancient version of Android underneath (4.4 KitKat), the parental controls allow you to open up access to regular Android apps like Netflix when you decide the time is right. That's a nice touch, and all-told it's a solid tablet for your kids, albeit a little pricey at $120.

See at Amazon

Dragon Touch K8 Android Kids Tablet

The Dragon Touch tablet runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow with a heavily customized user interface that's designed to be super kid-friendly. It costs around $100, which isn't insignificant, but you get some pretty great and unique features for a tablet in this space.

The first of those is pre-loaded Disney content worth $80. The K8 includes 20 books and 4 audiobooks for your kids to enjoy at no extra cost. It comes with Kidoz, Dragon Touch's parental control software, which also helps customize content recommendations specific to your child.

Besides a chunky protective case, the K8 has a nice 1280 x 800 resolution 8-inch display and a stylus pen. The stand on the case adjusts so you can prop it up to watch a video or rest it at a comfortable angle for drawing or writing with the pen. One of the pricier options but with some stand out features.

See at Amazon

Fisher Price Kids Learning Tablet

The first thing you'll notice about the Fisher Price Kids Learning Tablet is that it's perfectly suited to handing off to the little ones without worrying about it disintegrating. It's eye-catching enough to be fun, while being covered in the sort of rugged case that will protect from the likely frequent tumbles.

Fisher Price preloads the tablet with 35 apps and games suited for ages 3 and up, which is great, because part of a good experience for a kids tablet is tailored content. But, where it has the edge on something like the Fire Tablet is with full access to Google Play.

Without being siloed away from Google's massive app catalog, you've access to anything you want to have for your kids. It's now down to $60 as well which is a really solid price.

See at Toys R Us

The bottom line

No one knows your child like you do. You are the best predictor of what your child is going to enjoy and get the most use out of. You're also the one with the wallet.

But it's tough to look too far beyond the Amazon Fire Kids Edition. Amazon's no-quibble warranty and sheer amount of content available for the young ones makes it hard to top. All of these are good, though, so you're sure to be getting a great tablet for your kids with any of these.

Updated November 2017: We've added the Dragon Touch K8 in place of an older model, and updated our LeapFrog pick to the newer Academy Edition.

PopCap takes on Candy Crush with Bejeweled Stars

by Paul Acevedo

Match-3 puzzles games are a dime a dozen nowadays. Candy Crush is king of course, but it owes some inspiration to Bejeweled. Now PopCap has launched Bejeweled Stars, which might just Crush the competition. What makes this one so stellar? Read our detailed impressions to find out!

The next evolution of Bejeweled

The basic concept of Bejeweled is simple. Match three or more gems, score points, and try to create larger matches and chain reactions in order to score even more points. Bejeweled has always been one of the best games of this genre because of its appealing visuals and weird but soothing announcer who exclaims things like "Good!" or "Awesome" when you fire off combos. Creating certain combinations of gems also tends to conjure up power-up items. These in turn produce impressive effects when unleashed.

Combining Bejeweled with the level-based structure, limited moves, and limited lives of Candy Crush.

With the traditional Bejeweled Classic and the time attack Bejeweled Blitz already available on mobile, PopCap had to find a new gimmick for its latest entry Bejeweled Stars. The trick was to combine Bejeweled with the level-based structure, limited moves, and limited lives of Candy Crush.

Each level has a specific goal to complete, such as matching a quantity of a certain type of gem, clearing all the crystal panels by making matches on them, or creating and using power-up gems. The wrinkle is you only get a fixed number of moves to do it. Fail the level and you lose a life, which takes time to replenish.

The more moves you have remaining upon clearing the level, the better the score you get. Each level has a Facebook leaderboard, so you can try to outdo your friends. The stars you earn for doing well on a level contribute to Constellations. Complete a Constellation to earn rewards like Skygems.

Skygems, Charms, and In-App Purchases

Skygems are a new type of gem in Bejeweled Stars. They share the same colors as normal gems, but they have unique Lucky Charms-like shapes. Match some Skygems, complete a level, and they'll go into your inventory. They can then be spent in the Laboratory to produce special on-demand power-ups.

Early on, those power-ups are entirely optional. But like Candy Crush, it's safe to expect that levels will become tough enough that many players will need help in order to beat them. At least you can go back and replay levels to get more Skygems. And if you're really in a hurry, you can buy Skygems with gold earned from clearing levels.

Bejeweled Stars is a free to play game, so naturally it has in-app purchases. These include buying lives and buying gold. Players can also buy chests which contain random assortments of Charms. These seem to be used in the game's social features, although I couldn't test those due to playing before launch.

A star is born

As match-3 games so, I've always loved the Bejeweled series (with the exception of Blitz). After playing for a couple of hours, Bejeweled Stars looks like another fine entry. The early portion of the game is super fun. It looks and sounds great as well, though the flashy effects might cause performance issues on some devices.

Hopefully the harder levels of the game won't push players too strongly into spending money. We'll keep playing Bejeweled Stars and report back if we run into trouble. Be sure to let us know your impressions (and how the game performs on your phone or tablet) as well!

Assassin's Creed movie trailer leaps from the dark

by John Keefer

We have known an Assassin's Creed movie was coming, and when Michael Fassbender was announced to play the lead assassin, we thought that the film had potential. Now we get the first trailer, and nothing has changed our first impression.

The trailer, which was revealed on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night, shows Fassbender as Callum Lynch, a career criminal executed, then saved by Abstergo Industries. Fans will recognize Abstergo and the Animus, as well as the nefarious Templars, but the setting and hero are new. Once inside the Animus, Fassbender becomes assassin Aguilar de Nehra from 15th century Spain during the Inquisition.

We also get a glimpse of Ariane Labed as fellow assassin Maria, and Marion Cotillard as Sophia Rikken, daughter of Abstergo CEO Alan Rikkin, as she talks Lynch through the Animus and what is expected of him. And as with the games, the trailer offers plenty of tumbles, acrobatics and leaps of faith.

The film is being directed by Justin Kurzel, with the script was written by Michael Lesslie. It is set to be released on December 21 of this year. You can already get tickets for the film - and maybe a crossbow too.

SHIELD Showrunners Talk Civil War Crossover Impact

by Terri Schwartz

Spoilers for Marvel's Agents of SHIELD and how it connects to Captain America: Civil War continue below, so read on at your own risk.

As the Sokovia Accords divide the Avengers on the big screen, so too are they setting up battle lines on Marvel's Agents of SHIELD. Captain America: Civil War's aftershocks reached the MCU TV series in Tuesday's episode -- the third to last of the season -- and there were some pretty major repercussions on Phil Coulson's team.

Showrunners Maurissa Tancharoen and Jed Whedon got on the phone to talk about tying SHIELD to Marvel's latest film, and also set up what to expect in next week's two-hour season finale. After "Emancipation," Hive is going to be as troublesome as ever. "Right now he's pretty indestructible," said Whedon, "so we'll see how they tackle that problem."

Sherlock Holmes Brings More Style, Substance With Devil's Daughter

by David Jagneaux

There are few characters as well-known across the world than Sherlock Holmes. When I was a child, I honestly thought that he was a real person. Everyone has heard of Sherlock Holmes at some point in their life, whether it be through film, TV show, book, video game, or something else. For a character like that, a character that’s so well known his name itself is synonymous with being smart, it can be hard to reinvent him or come up with truly unique ways to tell his story in a way that’s both fresh and engaging. That difficulty with innovation is no more clear than it is in the case of Sherlock Holmes: The Devil’s Daughter, the latest entry in the long-running investigation series from Frogwares.

The Angry Birds Movie Review

by Max Nicholson

When it comes to video game movie adaptations, Angry Birds doesn't exactly strike one as ripe with potential. Although Rovio's series of puzzlers have been wildly popular on mobile, none of them have had much of a story or mythos. That's not to mention the general stigma with all video game movies, which is longstanding. That said, The Angry Birds Movie (helmed by animation vets Clay Kaytis and Fergal Reilly in their directorial debuts) has the distinct advantage of taking its popular icons and doing pretty much whatever they want with them, and the end result is a fun, offbeat and vibrant animated comedy.

If you're one of the few people who never downloaded Angry Birds, the game's premise is delightfully simple: Flightless, multicolored birds slingshot themselves into pigs' fortresses so they can retrieve their stolen eggs. For the movie, that idea is fleshed out even more and tells the story of how those birds got to be so angry in the first place.

Civil War’s 5 Biggest WTF Questions Answered

by Scott Collura

Now that we’ve all seen Marvel’s latest opus, Captain America: Civil War (and if you haven’t seen it, then why are you on this very spoilerific page?), it’s time to talk about some of the biggest questions, surprises, Easter eggs, and WTF moments that went down in the film.

But as we said, full spoilers for Civil War follow…

Short answer: It sure seems like it.

After Tony Stark and Steve Rogers finish beating the heck out of each other during that intense climax, we see Stark back at Avengers headquarters, where the partially paralyzed Rhodey/War Machine is learning how to walk again. The Vision sits, fingering a chess piece as he no doubt ponders the troubling split that has occurred among his teammates (not to mention the fact that Rhodey was injured because of him). And Spider-Man, another member of Team Iron Man, is back in Queens, no doubt ready to jump the next time his new benefactor calls. (Black Widow, meanwhile, seems to be whereabouts unknown…)
