Norway's Precursor to Harlem Shake?

by amanda b.
Christopher Lantz

I did not know about the Norwegian variation.

Butts

In March 2012, videos depicting a group of naked men gyrating and air-humping in Norway’s national landmarks were uploaded to YouTube, featuring a similar build-up scene that is reminiscent of the Harlem Shake videos we’re seeing today. Could these have inspired the Harlem Shake videos?

Century of the Self, Complete

Christopher Lantz

An interesting thesis put together by Adam Curtis.

Happiness Machines is a BBC documentary of how Sigmund Freud and his American nephew, Edward Bernays helped shape the consumerist society of today. Bernays was one of the main architects of the modern techniques of mass-consumer persuasion. He was one of the most influential people of the 20th century. He showed American corporations how they could use Freud’s ideas to make people want things they didn't need. It was the start of the all-consuming self which has come to dominate today's world. Before this pairing of products and the subconscious of individuals people based their purchases on need rather than their wants and desires. From the Century of the Self series of documentaries. 1. Happiness Machines (17 March 2002) 2. The Engineering of Consent (24 March 2002) 3. There is a Policeman Inside All Our Heads: He Must Be Destroyed (31 March 2002) 4. Eight People Sipping Wine in Kettering (7 April 2002)

‘Two Mothers’ Trailer: BFFs Robin Wright and Naomi Watts Sleep With Each Other’s Kids

by Angie Han
Christopher Lantz

I hadn't seen "Motherlovers" before.

Imagine the Lonely Island video “Motherlover” as a sun-drenched literary drama, and you have the basic premise of Anne Fontaine‘s new film Two Mothers. Naomi Watts and Robin Wright star as two childhood pals living side-by-side on a gorgeous Australian beach, along with their strapping sons Ian (Xavier Samuel) and Tom (James Frecheville). Their lives are idyllic but lonely, and it’s not long before the two women begin eyeing each other’s sons with something more than motherly affection.

There’s obvious potential for serious sleaze, but the film has some classy pedigree behind it. It’s an adaptation of a novella by Nobel laureate Doris Lessing, and Fontaine approaches the material with an elegant eye. Toss in two acclaimed actresses, and, well… it still looks kind of trashy, but it could also be genuinely moving and thought-provoking. Watch the trailer after the jump.

Here’s the first international trailer, via The Film Stage. The film is apparently titled Perfect Mothers in France, but seems to be going by the name Two Mothers in the U.S.

Maybe I’m just prudish, but I couldn’t quite get over the weirdness of these pseudo-incenstuous pairings. Of course, that may be the whole point. Commenting on arbitrary social and sexual barriers and what have you.

Reviews out of Sundance for Two Mothers were all over the map, but the overall impression isn’t great. Film Threat was “shocked” by its terribleness, The New York Post called it “an early contender for worst film of 2013,” and THR blasted it as “absurd.” On the other end of the spectrum, though, were folks like Twitch, who called it “downright fascinating,” and our very own Germain Lussier:

Two Mothers is a refreshing, honest & surprisingly beautiful drama. A bittersweet take on life, love & relationships.Great stuff. #sundance

— Germain Lussier (@GermainLussier) January 19, 2013

So maybe Vulture summed it up best when they decreed it “the best movie and the worst movie” of Sundance 2013. We’ll get to judge for ourselves when Exclusive Releasing releases it in theaters, but it could be a little while yet as they haven’t announced a date.

Discuss: I couldn’t resist — here’s the music video for SNL‘s “Motherlover.” Compare and contrast.

Amazing Ocean Facts, A Comic Series for Nat Geo Wild That Turned Out to be a Prank

by Justin Page

o2

Amazing Ocean Facts was an entertaining series of comic strips created by Cyanide and Happiness artist Rob DenBleyker (Dr. Byron Beekle) to help celebrate the Nat Geo Wild television series DinoFish. The comic strips turned out to be a clever April Fools’ Day joke on the Nat Geo TV Blogs. Rob disguised his real name with the alias Dr. Byron Beekle and started the comics off by clearly focusing on fun facts about ocean life. As the series progressed, he gradually displays the information and illustrations in an increasingly personal and disturbed manner.

The series ended on April 1,2012 with a message from Nat Geo Wild:

We have unfortunately ceased production of “Amazing Ocean Facts” due to artistic disagreements with Dr. Byron Beekle. We appologize to his fans.

Would You Believe This Emergency Report?

Christopher Lantz

lol - I had a series of dreams in the early 2000's where there never was any outbreak but that media became saturated by these kinds of reports and people just started to treat it as normal.

Someone managed to hijack this Montana TV station's airwaves, delivering a bogus report about a zombie outbreak to thousands. Would you have fallen for it?
