Rumor: ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Will Be Based on ‘Infinity Gauntlet’, Not ‘Infinity War’

by Angie Han

Avengers Infinity Gauntlet

Among other things, 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War promises to pay off a storyline that’s been years in the making — all the way since the Mad Titan showed up smirking in the end credits of 2012’s The Avengers. But it may not quite be the comic book arc you’re expecting.

According to a new rumor, Avengers: Infinity War will not, in fact, be an adaptation of the Infinity War storyline from the comics. Instead, it’ll be based on Infinity Gauntlet. Again, this is just a rumor for now, so proceed with caution. But it’s got an air of plausibility to it, since Infinity Gauntlet seems more aligned with the big-screen developments so far than Infinity War. And if it’s true, that means we may get to see Death herself join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

While the Marvel movies always take some licenses with the source material, the titles typically correspond to the arcs they’re based on. Captain America: Civil War, for example, centered around the Sokovia Accords instead of the Superhero Registration Act, but the basic premise of Captain America and Iron Man facing off remained intact. But LRMonline‘s spies say that won’t be the case with Avengers: Infinity War, which will lift its storyline from Marvel Comics’ Infinity Gauntlet.

Infinity Gauntlet

Published in 1991, Infinity Gauntlet sees Thanos using the Infinity Stones to wipe out half of all life in the universe in a bid to impress the object of his affections, Death. In the comics, Death is often portrayed as a woman and LRM says that’ll be the case in the movie as well. Naturally, a whole bunch of superheroes join forces to try and fight back. The comic book version of Infinity War, on the other hand, was published in 1992 as a sequel to Infinity Gauntlet. It follows Adam Warlock coming into possession of the Infinity Gauntlet and going toe-to-toe with Magus. Neither of those characters have been introduced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe at this point.

If you want to go further into the realm of speculation, one intriguing theory floating around is that the movie version of Death could turn out to be Cate Blanchett’s Thor: Ragnarok character Hela, the Asgardian goddess of death. They are two different characters in the comics, but why introduce a second personification of Death when you’ve already got Blanchett on the payroll, right? It’s worth pointing out, too, that while Kevin Feige has said Thanos will not show up in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2Thor: Ragnarok really seems to be leaning into the whole Thanos connection.

thanos-and-death

We’ve still got another several films to get through before we reach Avengers: Infinity War, so it’s not inconceivable that the franchise could find some way to skip past the Infinity Gauntlet storyline and go straight to the Infinity War one. But it seems quite possible that Avengers: Infinity War will draw from Infinity Gauntlet, maybe as a stepping stone to Infinity War. Remember, Avengers: Infinity War was originally announced as a two-parter to be released in 2018 and 2019, before Marvel decided to rename the latter film.

As for why the movie is going by the name Avengers: Infinity War instead of Avengers: Infinity Gauntlet, well, this is pure conjecture on my part, but I’m going to guess it has something to do with one of those titles sounding way, way cooler.

Avengers: Infinity War arrives May 4, 2018, followed by an untitled Avengers sequel on May 3, 2019.

Nick and Nate Diaz shoot for CNN's 'Parts Unknown' for possible spring episode

by Steven Marrocco

Nick Diaz and Nate Diaz’s sit-down with renowned chef, world traveler and UFC fan Anthony Bourdain could be headed to TV screens in the spring.

The UFC stars, along with their longtime friend and training partner Gilbert Melendez, explored vegan cuisine with Bourdain for an episode of CNN’s “Parts Unknown,” Diaz manager Lloyd Pierson told MMAjunkie.

The travel show features Bourdain as he explores cultures and cuisine from around the world, interviewing notable figures and everyday people about their lives.

Over the weekend, Bourdain tweeted a picture with the fighters grubbing at an unknown restaurant. The Diaz brothers are longtime vegans and advocate a plant-based diet as part of a healthy lifestyle.

Karen Reynolds, a spokesperson for CNN, today told MMAjunkie that the episode is targeted for the show’s ninth season, which debuts in April 2017. She was unable to provide further details because the episode is still in production and hasn’t taken its final shape.

Nate Diaz (19-11 MMA, 14-9 UFC), the No. 6 fighter in the USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA lightweight rankings, is taking it easy one month removed from a blockbuster welterweight rematch with UFC featherweight champ Conor McGregor (20-3 MMA, 8-1 UFC) at UFC 202. In a “Fight of the Year” offering, McGregor took home a majority decision, five months after Diaz submitted him at UFC 196.

Nick Diaz (26-10 MMA, 7-7 UFC), meanwhile, remains on the shelf despite completing the time portion of his Nevada State Athletic Commission suspension for his third marijuana infraction. According to the NSAC, Diaz remains suspended in the state because he hasn’t paid $75,000 of a $100,000 fine per a settlement agreement.

Melendez (22-6 MMA, 1-4 UFC), an honorable mention in the lightweight rankings, is contemplating a move to featherweight following a lopsided decision loss to Edson Barboza (18-4 MMA, 12-4 UFC) in July at UFC on FOX 20.

Ezekiel Welcomes You To The Kingdom In New Walking Dead Promo

by Sean Fischer
Ezekiel Welcomes You To The Kingdom In New Walking Dead Promo

Everyone’s favorite post-apocalyptic king makes his debut in a newly released promo for Season 7 of “The Walking Dead” (via Variety).

Ezekiel, or King Ezekiel as his followers refer to him, debuted in issue #108 of the comic series as the eccentric leader of the Kingdom, a settlement of survivors that fashioned itself after feudalistic society. It was apparent in the Season 6 finale that the Kingdom would appear in the show when we saw one of the armored knights from the community meet with Morgan while he was trying to rescue Carol.

RELATED: Telltale’s The Walking Dead Season 3 Lands Title, Release Date

Little has changed in the show’s adaptation of the character, as he’s the spitting image of his comic counterpart. The former zookeeper turned king appears with his trademark long graying deadlocks, star spangled spangled shirt, scepter, and of course, his pet tiger. In fact, the promotional image of actor Khary Payton released by AMC is nearly an exact copy of the comic cover where Ezekiel first appears. The promo itself seems to emphasize Ezekiel’s imposing nature showing him dispatching a few walkers while his tiger, Shiva lets out an intimidating roar. Despite what was displayed in the promo, there is an optimistic side to Ezekiel, which Payton has claimed is very important to the character.

One of the significant changes from the comic series is that it will be Morgan and Carol interacting with Ezekiel, and we get a quick glimpse of Morgan at the Kingdom in the promo. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Payton has said concerning the two characters, “He sees potential in them for understanding his way of living and spreading this gospel of joy and light in a dark situation. I think he considers his Kingdom a lighthouse, and if you use it the right way, it’ll keep you from crashing on the rocks.”

Naturally, Morgan fits this description pretty aptly, however given Carol’s disillusioned state at the end of the last season, it’ll take more time for her to reach that point. Regardless, it’ll be interesting to see that transformation if it happens.

The introduction of the Kingdom also has large implications on the plot of the series as a whole, since it was one of the communities that was vital in Rick’s plan to wage war against Negan and his army “The Saviors.”  Only time will tell to see if things unfold the same way in the upcoming season.

Season 7 of “The Walking Dead” Premieres October 23rd at 9 Pm on AMC.

This BMW Is A Real-Life Transformer — Seriously

This BMW Is A Real-Life Transformer — Seriously

RELATED: The Avengers and Decepticons Duke It Out In New Fan-Made Trailer

Looking for a car that’s more than meets the eye? If this fleet of BMWs marketed by Turkish R&D company Letvision works as advertised, the possibility might be much closer to reality than you may have realized.

The transforming automobiles, called “Letrons,” can supposedly morph from regular, albeit stylish, BMW sports cars into two-legged mechs that can then perform some rather limited movements. Once transformed, the mechs can move their heads, arms, wrists, and fingers. It’s nothing as impressive as what a full-fledged Transformer would be able to do, and you won’t be entering any G-Gundam style battles with them either, but the feat shows that the idea may have some potential if it were to be fleshed out further.

It also turns out, based on the Letrons web page, that the BMWs have some advanced features that would be useful regardless of whether or not you were interested in having your car turn into a bipedal robot—remote control software, an HD LCD, and a robust sound system, to name a few. No laser cannons or Energon swords, though, sadly.

There are several models on display: The Bizmut, Argon, Wolfram, and Tantal. Alas, no prices, and no hints as to when, if ever, they’ll be available for purchase.

The Most Polarizing Movies of the 21st Century

by Ethan Anderton
Corey

YOU'RE TEARING ME APART LISA!

Most Polarizing Movies

Because everyone’s opinions on movies are subjective, there will always be disagreements between what people think deserves to be called an outstanding movie or what is just cinematic garbage. More often than not, there’s some kind of general consensus, but every now and then there are movies where the opinions range from one end of the spectrum to the other.

Over at Medium, they’ve analyzed data from the user-based movie rating site Taste in order come up with a list of the 30 most polarizing movies of the 21st century so far. They include this year’s most discussed and hotly debated movies such as Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad and Ghostbusters: Answer the Call, as well as some Best Picture winners and nominees, controversial comedies, and more. Check out the full list below.

Here’s the graph showing the 30 most polarizing movies of the 21st century (via Taste):

Most Polarizing Movies of the 21st Century

It should come as no surprise to see entries from Paul Thomas Anderson (Punch-Drunk Love), Terrence Malick (Tree of Life), Nicholas Winding Refn (Only God Forgives) and Lars von Trier (Nymphomanic: Volume II). All those directors are beloved by cinephiles, but they also make movies that are not as easily accessible or enjoyed by general audiences.

But more audience friendly blockbusters aren’t without creating some divisive opinions either. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull makes an appearance along with The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, the latter of which I didn’t realize had such a polarizing reception.

Anyway, according to the user ratings from Taste, these are the top movies when it comes to titles that people either flat out love or they downright hate, leaving very little room for any middle ground apparently. When it comes to The Room, I’m not sure why that’s so polarizing. I thought we all knew it was pretty awful. But maybe some people love it because it’s so bad, hence the variance in ratings.

What do you make of this list?

What I thought I knew turned out to be exactly the reason people named Richard are called Dick. The next question is why are people who are not named Richard called Dick. But that probably varies on an individual basis. -Thanks, Daven!

A Huge Collection Of Clever Movie Easter Eggs

by Zeon Santos
Corey

Love easter eggs. Some good ones in here.

Movie easter eggs are fun to hunt with your eyeballs and often so deliciously geeky that you want to share them with friends.

Which is why sites keep posting articles revealing the locations of movie secrets and we keep eating it all up!

In this collection of 30 Clever Easter Eggs put together by gamesradar we learn the morse code message received in Peter Jackson's 2005 version of King Kong was not an arrest warrant for Carl Denham- it actually said “show me the monkey!”.

The list also shows us little details we may have missed, like the painting of Roland the Gunslinger Thomas Jane's character is painting in The Mist, or the fact that Freddy's glove is hanging in the tool shed in Evil Dead 2.

And lastly, did you think the name of the Mexican restaurant in Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy seemed a bit long?

That's because it was a big joke- Escupimos en su Alimento means "we spit in your food".

The Sign That Paid Off

by Miss Cellania

As ESPN broadcast its College Game Day show yesterday, you could see the usual crowd of college students behind the commentators. One of them was Sam Crowder, who held up this sign. It had his Venmo ID on it. (Venmo is a money transfer app.) Before the day was over, around 2,000 people had sent Crowder some money! Yes, the amounts could have been as low as a penny, but we assume not all of them were, so the total amount could be substantial. Venmo itself sent him $50.

There will, no doubt, be more such signs in the crowd next Saturday, but this kind of jackpot only pays off big once. No word yet as to whether Crowder’s mother sent anything. -via reddit

The Room’s Tommy Wiseau Attempts To Prevent Documentary Screening At The Sydney Underground Film Festival

by Erik Amaya

Though The Room director Tommy Wiseau courted fame with the reinvention of his magnum opus as a cult classic, he has never been prepared to give up a certain part of his anonymity in exchange for that fame. Indeed, the writer/director has worked overtime to prevent screenings of the documentary Room Full of Spoon nearly anytime it is booked at a theater of festival.

In recent days, the Sydney Underground Film Festival is the latest organization facing Wiseau’s legal menace.

Festival director Steven Popescu told the Sydney Morning Herald that he is unsure if the trash auteur is bluffing. “My strategy at this point is to engage his lawyer in writing me as many letters as possible, as I know each letter would cost him at least $500 a pop,” he said. “I think this will indicate how much he’s willing to spend on stopping this screening.”

Of course, if his lawyer’s first name is John or Johnny, it may just be Wiseau himself under and assumed name; as some who have tangled with him before have claimed.

Room Full of Spoons is, according to the film’s website, an “in depth documentary about the cult film that is widely accepted as the worst film ever made: The Room, and it’s eccentric creator Tommy Wiseau.” As part of its mission statement, filmmaker Rick Harper attempted to piece together the true origin of Wiseau; a past he has kept well-hidden.

Wiseau has managed to keep the film from screening elsewhere and Popescu said there would be a certain irony if “the man with the reputation as the world’s worst filmmaker” censors a festival known for showing seditious and occasionally illegal films.

Meanwhile, actor/trickster James Franco is wrapping up his telling of the making the The Room, The Masterpiece, with himself as both director and Wiseau. It is expected to be released later this year.

"If you wanted to disappear, Ardmore, Oklahoma, would be a fine place to do it"

by noreply@blogger.com (John)
Corey

Dool.

From an article about once-promising NFL player Justin Blackmon:
The town envelops you slowly, pulling you in from the highway on your way north from Dallas or south from Oklahoma City. Cut through the layer of strip malls and Applebee’s; head past the Walmart Supercenter that draws shoppers from nearby towns Lone Grove and Wilson; and as you head past Main Street toward downtown you can watch the world transform. Here the brick is faded, the signs all slightly askew. Businesses have straightforward names. There’s Ashley’s (books), Marquis (furniture), and Antiques (antiques). Above, a water tower and a feed mill reach toward a sky that is vast, occupying air that is hot and dry. Below, locals say, a web of tunnels snakes through the earth, underground passages that once connected bootleggers to brothels and gave criminals refuge whenever their enemies passed through town.

Tenacious D Releases Game of Thrones Tribute Ode to Jon Snow

by Andrew Scott

In celebration of the release of “Game of Thrones” Season 6 on digital platforms (and the U.S. presidential election), fans of the HBO fantasy drama were invited last month to vote for which character they believe should sit on the Iron Throne of Westeros.

Although the results were close, Jon Snow and his running mate Lyanna Mormont emerged as the winners with 35 percent of the vote, edging out Daenerys Targaryen and Tyrion Lannister, who garnered 32 percent. Littlefinger and Sansa Stark followed at a close third with 31 percent. (It’s probably best not to mention Cersei Lannister and Qyburn’s measly 2 percent.)

To commemorate the Bastard of Winterfell’s victory, the comedy rock band Tenacious D — Kyle Gass, John Konesky and John Spiker — has released the track “Ode to Jon Snow (A Campaign Trail Song)” under the name Valyrian Steel.

The instrumental even comes with an appropriately epic introduction: “From deep within the rich musical subculture of King’s Landing, flute powered Valyrian Steel has stepped forward to gift a valiant battle cry dedicated to the official GOT Party nominee and running mate — an Ode to Snow.”

The seventh, and penultimate, season of HBO’s “Game of Thrones” will air next summer.

‘Ben-Hur’ Will Be Summer 2016’s Biggest Box Office Bomb With $120 Million Loss

by Peter Sciretta
Corey

Interesting.

Ben-Hur will be Summer 2016's Biggest Box Office Bomb

Summer 2016 has seen a fair share of box office disappointments and bombs, but the biggest loser is Timur Bekmambetov‘s remake of Ben-Hur which will see a projected loss of over $120 million. Learn more about the biggest money losers of this summer, after the jump.

The number comes thanks to multiple box-office analysts consulted by The Hollywood Reporter. Ben-Hur will probably only make $70-75 million globally, which is far less than the film’s estimated budget. Sources claim that the movie cost nearly $100 million to make, and that doesn’t include the marketing budget.

A film’s marketing budget is typically 50% of the film’s production budget, but higher with larger tentpole films, sometimes costing more than the production of the movie. Film studios usually make 50% of the US box office and a greater percentage from international markets. Plus, the movie will also make some ancillary revenue from home video sales and television rights. As the THR story notes:

“MGM will take the majority of the financial hit, since it put up more than 80 percent of Ben-Hur’s budget and much of the marketing spend (it did minimize some of its exposure by selling off rights in select foreign markets). Paramount’s loss is pegged by sources at a relatively modest $13 million.”

The other box office bombs of summer 2016 include:

  • Steven Spielberg’s The BFG which grossed $160.8 million globally on a $140 million film budget. The movie is expected to lose $90 million-$100 million.
  • Alice Through the Looking Glass grossed $295.4 million worldwide on an estimated $170 million budget, which should lead to a loss of at least $65 million for Disney.
  • Ghostbusters: Answer The Call has earned $225 million globally on an estimated $144 million production budget, with a projected loss of $70 million or more killing hopes for a sequel.
  • Pete’s Dragon has earned only $78.3 million (thus far) despite fantastic reviews on a projected budget of $65 million.

Paramount’s Star Trek Beyond has made $294 million globally on a $185 million budget, but a lot of the foreign markets are still making money as the film has rolled out in those markets over the past few weeks. Home video and television rights should put this in the black for Paramount.

While 20th Century Fox’s Independence Day: Resurgence didn’t do too great domestically ($103 million) it did make $383 million globally. While this box office figure isn’t great for a movie with a $165 million budget, remember that Hollywood makes a larger percentage off of international markets. After you add the marketing into the equation, the film should end up eeking out a profit from home video and television rights.

Looking at the list above you will see that Disney was responsible for a few of the money losers this summer, but their winners have more than made up for their losses: Finding Dory should earn over $1 billion worldwide, while Captain America: Civil War made $1.15 billion globally.

It will be interesting to see if this fall picks up at the box office. Even Forbes expert Scott Mendelson isn’t sure how much money Disney’s Rogue One: A Star Wars story might make, calling it a wild card. Could a Star Wars movie fail at the box office? Mendelson notes that the first Star Wars anthology film will probably be a success, it’s just we have no idea what level of a success.

Watch: Animated ‘Indiana Jones’ Movie ‘The Adventures of Indiana Jones’ From Patrick Schoenmaker

by Peter Sciretta

animated indiana jones movie short

Artist Patrick Schoenmaker has spent the last five years creating an animated Indiana Jones movie which was finally released online. The passion project comes in the form of a 1 minute and 40 second short film showing off the incredible possibilities when translating George Lucas‘ and Steven Spielberg‘s creation to the hand-drawn animated medium. Hit the jump to watch it now.

Animated Indiana Jones Movie Short

As you can see, The Adventures of Indiana Jones recreates some memorable moments from the film, while imagining some new adventures. The one minute and forty second short almost plays like an opening title sequence montage, offering a look at the possibilities of a potential television series. I really hope that Disney sees this fan-made short film and decides animated Indiana Jones television series might be something worth exploring for DisneyXD, Netflix or another home.

But please, if Lucasfilm does decide to make an animated Indy project, make it 2D animated. I love Star Wars Rebels but the 3D models and animation are not too pleasing to the eye. I understand that series is under major budgetary constraints and they make great use of what they have, but it’s frustrating that we don’t get to explore more of the galaxy due to the costs of modeling new cities. There is only so much time we can spend in the Ghost or in Lothal.

Now that Disney owns Lucasfilm and the Indiana Jones franchise, it would be interesting if they might consider doing something like this with the iconic character. I would watch an animated Indiana Jones tv series on DisneyXD or another network, or even watch a fully animated movie if they were to make one. At Star Wars Celebration Europe 2016 it was hinted that the now-in-development Indiana Jones 5 might be the first step into a larger Indiana Jones cinematic universe.

Patrick Schoenmaker's Escaping the tomb indiana jones print

The whole thing started around the release of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull when Schoenmaker was commissioned by Lucasfilm and ACME Archives to create a print envisioning Indiana Jones as an animated cartoon. And while Lucasfilm had no interest in seeing a cartoon version of Indy, Patrick just couldn’t stop thinking of the possibility and had to bring it to life as a fan project. Five years later and the Indiana Jones animated movie is complete.

First off, above you can see the “Escaping The Tomb” print that Patrick created for ACME Archives in 2011 (I actually own this print myself) and is still available for purchase. Here Patrick explains how the project came about:

Indiana Jones must have been my first true movie hero ever since I watched Raiders of the Lost Ark on a VCR way back when. Yes, some other heroes came and went, but Indy always held a special place. After Crystal Skull was released, my love for the character was once again fully ignited and with no new movies on the horizon back then, I decided to set up an Indiana Jones project of my own to keep the fire burning a little bit longer. So, that was back in 2011 and “a little bit longer” turned into 5 years of hard work. The end of the project is finally in sight.

I love Patrick’s style. Take a look at the images that Patrick Schoenmaker posted over the years while he was crafting over this film:

‘Free Fire’ Trailer: Ben Wheatley Drops Brie Larson Into a Feature-Length Gunfight

by Jacob Hall

Great cast.

The impending arrival of new Ben Wheatley movie is always a cause for celebration. The genius (yes, I’ll break out the “G” word) behind films like Kill List, Sightseers, and High-Rise has been a favorite of mine for years, leaping between genres while maintaining his signature dark comedy and unflinching ability to sell genuine pain and terror. His new film, Free Fire, is built around a premise that is simultaneously old school and high concept: two groups of criminals in 1970s Boston arrange an arms deal in an old warehouse, things go south, guns are drawn…and they proceed to engage in a gun battle that plays out over the course of the entire movie, mostly in real time.

The first Free Fire trailer has arrived (in bloody, NSFW red band form!) and you can check it out below.

Free Fire actually held its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last night, and the reviews so far have been mostly positive, a nice bounce from the hugely divisive (and from my perspective, brilliant) High-Rise. The trailer itself sells a movie that looks far more approachable than most of Wheatley’s work so far – his penchant for combining grisly violence with black comedy is on full display, but it’s wrapped in a package that could be appealing to audiences who found the psychedelic A Field in England too weird or Kill List too oblique. Frankly, Free Fire (at least in trailer form) looks like the kind of thing Guy Ritchie would have made if he hadn’t taken off for Hollywood.

If you want more, there’s this red band U.K. trailer, which runs about a minute shorter.

Free Fire Trailer: UK Version

It certainly helps that Free Fire features the biggest cast of any Wheatley movie so far. Brie Larson is the instant standout because she took home an Academy Award for Room earlier this year and is on deck to play Captain Marvel, but the rest of the ensemble isn’t made up of slouches. There’s Armie Hammer, the dashingly handsome and charming actor who should have been a star by now. There’s Cillian Murphy, being allowed to go full-Irish. There’s Jack Reynor, who has won the undying love of anyone smart enough to have watched Sing Street by now. There’s Wheatley regular Michael Smiley, whose mere presence just makes me grin like a loon. And then there’s Sharlto Copley, a living, breathing wild card whose performance is almost always dependent on the material he’s given. I would like nothing more than to love another Copley performance.

In short, this is a group of people I really want to see shoot at each other for 90 minutes.

Free Fire doesn’t have an official release date yet, but A24 will release it in theaters sometime in 2017. In the meantime, here’s the glorious poster for the film, which looks like it leaped into 2016 from a time tunnel connected to 1974.
