Reply All

by Miss Cellania

Hitting “reply all” on a multi-person email can start a chain reaction that never ends. In fact, it can be like rolling a snowball down a mountain, where it gathers more and more snow until it’s bigger than a house. Sometimes it ends in a picnic and a viral story, like the Berkeley Spampocalypse last year. But usually, it just annoys everyone. The New York Times has some advice on such an event. -Thanks, John Farrier!

The Beard Cycle Continues

by Zeon Santos

Shaving can be so tedious, and often causes razor bumps and burn, so I shave as little as possible because it's just so much easier to constantly sport a beard.

But then I wake up one day and hate how that overgrown beard looks on my face so off it goes, leaving my cheeks smooth as a baby's bottom...which sucks for different reasons.

As this For Lack Of A Better Comic strip shows guys who are frenemies with their beards can't stop the cycle of facial hair love and hate!

Why Get A Permit When You Can Hide Construction With Astroturf?

by Jill Harness

Sometimes you need to do a little construction on your property, but getting permits (especially if you live in a huge city like New York City) isn't always easy. So if you want to bypass the whole process, you can always try what one clever New Yorker did and just start an excavation in your backyard and use astroturf, patio furniture and some rocks to hide your digging.

No word on why, exactly homeowner Joseph Ienco was digging under his home, but at least an independent engineer has said the home itself is at no risk of collapsing -so that's something I guess.

Daniel Craig Hasn’t Been Offered $150 Million to Return As James Bond [Update]

by Ethan Anderton
Corey

Fuckit.

Pay the man.

Daniel Craig Returning as James Bond

Update From Editor Peter Sciretta: As expected, the report that Daniel Craig had been offered $150 million to reprise his role as James Bond for two more films turns out to be completely false. Details after the jump.

Vanity Fair gives the following update:

Craig, 48, has been offered no such deal, sources say, and negotiations to pin down who will portray 007 in upcoming Bond installments are still ongoing. (Sony and MGM, the secret agent franchise’s co-distributor, declined comment.)

The report goes on to point out, as we had, that the decision would not unilaterally fall to Sony, but instead the company that licenses Bond – Eon Productions. And according to this new report, the company was furious over Craig’s “slash my wrists” comment and thus wouldn’t be excited to entice him to return. Of course, this doesn’t mean that Craig won’t end up returning, but it seems the $150 million for two films offer just didn’t happen.

Ethan Anderton’s original report from September 6th 2016 follows:

The future of the James Bond franchise is up in the air. Not only have the distribution rights to Ian Fleming’s world famous secret agent been up for grabs since Spectre hit theaters last year, but the return of Daniel Craig has been rather uncertain with a rumor circulating that the actor turned down $100 million to reprise his role as 007. But a new rumor offers an update on both those fronts.

Find out the latest development regarding Daniel Craig returning as James Bond after the jump.

Radar Online reports that Sony currently has an offer out to Daniel Craig for $150 million to come back as James Bond for two more movies that would be made virtually back-to-back. However, there are a few issues with this news that make us think it might not be the most reliable piece of information.

First of all, as far as we know, Sony doesn’t own the rights to James Bond anymore. Following Spectre, the rights were up for bid to the highest bidder, but we haven’t heard anything about any studio picking them up. So why would Sony be making an offer for Daniel Craig to return to a role that they’re not in control of anymore? Well, the rumor also says that Sony has renegotiated a deal for the rights to James Bond, and they’re hoping to announce that officially soon, but they wanted to have Daniel Craig officially on board first.

That could very well be true, even though we’ve heard that Sony didn’t really make much money from the James Bond franchise. Their deal with Eon had Sony incurring 50% of the production costs and 100% of the marketing costs in exchange for just 20% of the profits. However, I can’t imagine Sony taking that same deal again, so some serious negotiating would have been needed to keep James Bond at Sony. However, more doubt comes from the added details of Daniel Craig not only taking on two more James Bond movies, but shooting them back-to-back.

During the publicity rounds for Spectre last year, Daniel Craig expressed how he was adamantly against shooting two James Bond movies back-to-bacck, which was the original plan for Spectre and James Bond 25. In an interview with Time Out, the actor said:

“There was a conversation at one point that went: ‘Let’s film two movies back to back.’ I just went: ‘You’re out of your fucking minds.’ In the nicest possible way. They’re just too big.”

In addition, after saying that he’d rather slash his wrists than do another James Bond movie, having just finished the last one, he offered this wonderfully honest nugget about whether or not he would want to do another movie as 007:

“I haven’t given it any thought. For at least a year or two, I just don’t want to think about it. I don’t know what the next step is. I’ve no idea. Not because I’m trying to be cagey. Who the fuck knows? At the moment, we’ve done it. I’m not in discussion with anybody about anything. If I did another Bond movie, it would only be for the money.”

Now that’s where we come back to this rumor perhaps turning out to be true. If Daniel Craig came back to James Bond it would be for the money, and $150 million is a lot of money. Is it enough cash to convince Craig to do two James Bond movies back-to-back? That remains to be seen, along with whether or not Sony really has secured the rights to James Bond again.

For now, take all of this with a grain of salt, if only because Radar isn’t the most reliable source in these matters. While it would be nice to have Daniel Craig return for at least one more James Bond movie, if only to wash the bland taste of Spectre out of our mouths, we wouldn’t be surprised. If Craig really doesn’t care about the character beyond money, perhaps passing the baton would be a little more interesting at this point. If Craig doesn’t return, we have our own ideas of who would be great as 007.

Google planning to enter the ride-sharing business with Waze

by Jordan Palmer

Logo_for_waze.svg

It looks like Google is finally moving into the San Francisco ride-sharing market. According to the Wall Street Journal, the tech giant is looking to offer commuters cheaper rates (and lower fares) than the two big players, Uber and Lyft. The plan is to connect drivers and riders who are going in the same direction, instead of the on-demand service you would see with other ride-sharing services.

This possible new initiative from Google follows a test that the company did in May that allowed workers at specific firms to commute with each other via the Waze app.

LOL: ‘Saturday Night Live’ Supecuts Show Decades of the Cast Breaking Character

by Ethan Anderton
Corey

Love these.

Saturday Night Live Breaking Character Supercuts - Bill Hader as Stefon

Some people wonder why Saturday Night Live is still a program that is put together in just a week when the comedy that comes from the show can be so hit or miss. For superfans of the show like myself, that’s actually one of the most exciting aspects of the show. It’s impressive to see what this talented group of people can put together in such a short amount of time, and no one makes show like this anywhere else on television.

Another fun element of the live aspect of the show is that anything can happen while it’s on the air, and that includes cast members “breaking” in the middle of a scene. Sometimes the SNL cast members just can’t help but laugh at themselves or their co-stars and they break the reality of the scene. Usually it just results in the sketch getting funnier, and the audience always loves to see it happen. Now you can relive some of the best moments of breaking from SNL with a couple supercuts spanning decades of sketches.

Here’s the two Saturday Night Live breaking character supercuts from YouTube (via The AV Club):

More often than not, breaking happens in Weekend Update, but when it happens in the sketches, that’s even better. The two most notorious cast members known for breaking character were Jimmy Fallon and Horatio Sanz, especially when they were together in a sketch. It’s actually amazing these two videos aren’t of just them. But Bill Hader had plenty breaks of his own, especially as the New York City tourism expert Stefon. But there’s actually a really good reason for that.

For those who don’t know, comedian John Mulaney was a writer on Saturday Night Live, and he was the one who worked with Bill Hader for the Stefon segments on Weekend Update. It became a tradition for Mulaney to make one or two last minute changes to the cue cards before the show went live that Hader wasn’t aware of, so whenever he breaks, it was usually because he just read one of Mulaney’s jokes for the first time. As for the rest of the time, sometimes even the best comedic talents can’t help but laugh at themselves.

Video: Paige VanZant returns from ‘Dancing With the Stars,’ KOs Rawlings with head kick

by Brent Brookhouse

Round 1 of Paige VanZant’s return to the UFC after a runner-up stint on “Dancing with the Stars” was lackluster. The second round of her bout with Bec Rawlings was not.

The women’s strawweight bout was part of the main card of today’s UFC on FOX 21 event at Rogers Arena in Vancouver. It aired on FOX following prelims on FOX and UFC Fight Pass.

Rawlings (7-5 MMA, 2-2 UFC) controlled much of the action in the opening frame while a passive VanZant (7-2 MMA, 4-1 UFC) stuck to the outside and rarely let her strikes go. After being implored by her corner between rounds to focus on simple strikes, VanZant did the exact opposite, throwing a jumping switch kick that connected with Rawlings’ jaw and sent her crashing to the canvas for the knockout at the 0:17 mark of Round 2.

‘The Guardians’ Trailer: Russia’s Avengers-Style Superhero Movie Looks Crazy

by Peter Sciretta

The Guardians trailer

The Guardians (foreign title “Zaschitniki”) is Russia’s attempt at a Marvel Avengers-style superhero blockbuster. Directed by Armenian director Sarik Andreasyan and starring Sebastien Sisak, Anton Pampuchniy, Sanzhar Madiev, Alina Lanina, Valeria Shkirando and Stanislav Shirin, the story follows a secret group of Soviet superheroes named “Patriot” created during the Cold War to defend the homeland from supernatural threats. The team is comprised of representatives of the different nationalities of the Soviet Union. But really all you need to know is the movie features a bear-man shooting a huge Gatling gun. Watch The Guardians trailer now after the jump to see what Russia’s big superhero team-up blockbuster looks like.

The Guardians Trailer

Pretty insane right? I definitely get an Avengers: Age Of Ultron tone from the trailer, but it seems like the film aspires to be a crazy Russian action movie take on a comic like Watchmen. The visual effects and production value look big, especially for the budget. The Guardians has a reported budget of 330 million Russian Rubble, which is the equivalent of about $5 million, but I’m sure you’ll agree that watching the trailer it looks like it cost a lot more. The filmmaker Sarik Andreasyan is probably best known in the US as the director of the movie American Heist, which starred Adrien Brody and Hayden Christensen.

The Guardians won’t hit theaters until February 23rd, 2017 but they’ve already announced development on a sequel. China is looking to increase the amount of films imported from other countries, and Chinese distributor Turbo Films has teamed with Russian production company Enjoy Movies to not only release this movie but co-produce the sequel. The film will take one of China’s 34 annual import spots. The Guardians is the second Russian film to fit into the quota, following the 2013 action film Stalingrad.
