The Department of Justice has dropped its case against Apple. After over a month of court motions, congressional hearings and public fights over circumventing the security of the iPhone 5C used by San Bernardino shooter Syed Rizwan Farook, the govern...
When Jordan Reeves was given the chance to create her own superhero-inspired prosthetic arm, she conjured up something other 10-year-old girls can only dream of. She designed a cannon that can slip into her left arm that stops above her elbow and sho...
Last September, the animated classic The Iron Giant returned to US theaters as a "Signature Edition" with high definition visuals and two additional scenes. Warner Bros. has now confirmed a Blu-ray release for this fall, as well as an "Ultimate Colle...
If I offered you $4 to come to my house and make me dinner and wash my dishes afterwards, would you do it? Probably not. But that’s what a minimum wage worker at McDonald’s can do in a half hour.
What about $8 to come over and play with my kid and teach her to read and change her if she needs it and do all other assorted activities for an hour? Again, probably not. But that’s what a day care worker might do in an hour.
If I paid you $4, would you come over and make my bed and vaccume my room and do some of my laundry and clean my bathroom and pick up trash and dust? Probably not but that’s what a hotel maid might do in half an hour.
When you break it down into smaller increments it’s obvious that people need to be paid more, that the minium wage is pathetic.
If there was a grand prize for "Most Work Done to Prove a Point" (and "Fanciest Name Ever") Jean-Baptiste Henri Franck Cyrille Marie Le Divelec would be a contender. For 2001: A Gif Odyssey, the ad agency creator painstakingly chopped Stanley Kubrick...
Whether you think Batman v Superman is a masterpiece or an underwhelming mess, it's hard not to be impressed by the new Batcave. It's a stylish take on the Dark Knight's lair and now, you can explore it for yourself through Google Street View. You'll...
Glass is a 1958 non-verbal documentary short by Bert Haanstra that contrasts glassblowing techniques used inside the Royal Leerdam Glass Factory with more modern industrial machines. The first half shows several men at work using traditional glassblowing to create ornate objects like vases and mugs set against jazz music, while the second part shifts abruptly into the mechanized world of industrial glass production set to a whimsical score of more synthesized music. Also, there’s a ton of great smoking! It’s a really unusual little film that went on to pick up an Oscar for Documentary Short Subject in 1959.
Glass was made available by Aeon as part of their wonderfully curated selection of videos on art, design, culture, and news topics. (via Vimeo)

Today's comic was probably inspired by that anti-trans bullshit that went down in North Carolina. A thing I've seen a lot online is the attitude that bigots are on the wrong side of history, and that over time their voices will be diminished by the gradual shift of public opinion. I think this is true! But I also think it can potentially obscure the very real need for active efforts to enact social change.
Anyway, this is the sort of thing writing jokes about robots wanting meat arms makes me think about.
If you think you have a sense of what Microsoft's HoloLens headset can do, you're in for a pleasant surprise. The company's Alex Kipman recently presented a TED Talk on HoloLens that included multiple fresh demos illustrating Kipman's vision of an au...
Cooper Griggs"If you're online and come across a SilverPush advertiser, while the ad drops its tracking cookie on your computer, it also emits an (inaudible) Audio Beacon sound. If your phone or tablet has any app that uses the SilverPush software development kit on it, your device will be "listening" for the advertiser's Audio Beacon. If you're watching TV, commercials from SilverPush's ad partners will also emit their own identifying tones for your devices to hear."
That's some pretty evil shit right there.
You may have heard that the FTC this week sent out a dozen strongly worded letters to apps using the SilverPush framework. The FTC politely told 12 app developers that they needed to let users know that SilverPush was collecting data and selling it t...
