Bid adieu to 'Airplane Mode' on European airlines

by Nicole Lee
Want to continue that scintillating game of Words with Friends throughout the entire flight? Well, that might soon be a possibility if you're flying in European airspace. Late last year, the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) had decided to...

Corvette's 'valet mode' is illegal depending on where you live

by Timothy J. Seppala
When we took the Corvette Performance Data Recorder for a spin at CES this year we'd never have guessed that the system could cause a run-in with Johnny Law. As it turns out, the system's audio recording feature that activates when the car's put into...

Even San Francisco is thinking about cracking down on Uber

by Daniel Cooper
The world's authorities must have something of a love/hate relationship with ridesharing companies. On one hand, it's a disruptive new technology that encourages competition, which they love, but it's also a regulatory nightmare for all involved....

While flying south of San Francisco recently, photographer Julieanne Kost managed to capture this beautiful series of photographs that look like something out of a Dr. Seuss book. The color in the photos isn’t altered, nor were the images taken with an infrared lens, instead what you’re seeing are countless trillions of microorganisms thriving away inside shallow salt ponds. It takes an average of five years to transform bay water into salt brine, during which the various organisms that live in the ponds undergo a dramatic chromatic shift as the salinity increases. You can a bit more about the process over on Amusing Planet, and see more of Kost’s photograhs on Behance. All photos courtesy the photographer. (via This Isn’t Happiness)

iOS 8's WiFi location privacy isn't as powerful as you might think

by Jon Fingas
Cooper Griggs

Well there's something I didn't know about my phone. Lovely.

If you were hoping that iOS 8's ability to hide your device ID from nearby WiFi networks would render you invisible to nosy hotspot operators, you'll want to dial back your expectations a bit. AirTight Networks' Bhupinder Misra has found that Apple's...

An Illuminated Woven Willow Tree House by Tom Hare

by Christopher Jobson

I don't know about "house" but it sure is pretty.

UK sculptor Tom Hare works primarily with willow branches to create large organic sculptures that borrow from the same techiques used in basket making. One of his most recent commissions was a giant egg-like treehouse installed in a cherry tree at a private residence. Lit from the inside, the complexity of the structure is highlighted against the sky, making it look a bit more like a spaceship than a treehouse. You can see more of Hare’s work on his Tumblr. Storm Chaser Films Rolling Cloud Formations That Make You Feel like Youre Underwater weather clouds

Earlier this summer, storm chaser Alex Schueth managed to capture a timelapse of a rare cloud formation called a undulatus asperatus during a storm over Lincoln, Nebraska. The rolling pattern formed by the clouds almost gives the impression you’re underwater looking up at the surface at waves. (via PetaPixel)

Texting on Google Glass is just as dangerous as on a phone

You'd think hands-free texting on Google Glass while driving would be a lot safer, but apparently, that's not the case. A team of University of Central Florida researchers got 40 subjects in their 20s to drive a simulator while texting a math problem...

Too bad they didn't try this solution first:

One of the biggest challenges of switching to clean energy sources is finding a place to store excess power. That's relatively easy on a small scale, but it's much more daunting for your utility company. Southern California Edison is apparently ready...
