Must-see morning clip: Bill Murray returns to Letterman for 20 year anniversary

31 years ago, comedian Bill Murray was the first guest to ever appear on David Letterman's late night television program on NBC. 20 years ago (to the day) Murray was again the first guest to appear on David Letterman's show after he moved to CBS. Last night, Murray and Letterman celebrated that special anniversary by appearing together once more, this time with Murray dressed as Liberace. Murray uncovered a time capsule from 1993:

And offered Letterman a tribute:

Watch the clip from 20 years ago, when Murray was on the show to promote "Groundhog Day":

And 11 years before that, when Murray ushered in Letterman's first late night show in 1982:

ABANDONED AMUSEMENT PARKS

I cannot stop surfing through these haunting Francesco Mugnai pictures. His photo series on abandoned amusement parks brings chills to my body as thrilling as the excitement I can recall back from visiting the amusement parks of my childhood. Here are all the memories rotting in fields and perhaps hosting some ghostly visitors.

Sharing Different Heartbeats: Annie, The Knife, Robyn, Jose Gonzalez, A-Trak + Kanye, Grizzly Bear, Girls Aloud

by Jia Tolentino
by Jia Tolentino

Emily Yoshida's pick for Grantland's "Best Rejected Songs of the Millennium" (a solid addendum to the now-criminal bracket) reminded me of this holiest trinity of mid-2000's alt-pop, which is never not worth revisiting.

After the jump, some of their hot cousins: the honestly great A-Trak mashup of "Heartbeats" + Kanye's "Get 'Em High," the coy Girl Talk mashup of the Knife with "Knife" by Grizzly Bear, the gorgeous Jose Gonzalez "Heartbeats" cover, the melodramatic, tween-friendly Girls Aloud cover of "With Every Heartbeat," and the totally unrelated but fantastic Nneka song from 2008, also called "Heartbeat."

The Suspected Chemical Weapons Attack in Syria, Reconstructed

by Eli Sanders

In the New York Times:

Thousands of sick and dying Syrians had flooded the hospitals in the Damascus suburbs before dawn, hours after the first rockets landed, their bodies convulsing and mouths foaming. Their vision was blurry and many could not breathe.

Overwhelmed doctors worked frantically, jabbing their patients with injections of their only antidote, atropine, hoping to beat back the assault on the nervous system waged by suspected chemical agents. In just a few hours, as the patients poured in, the atropine ran out.

To avoid contamination, medics stripped new arrivals down to their underwear and doused them with water before taking them inside.

New patients kept coming.

I started reading this story because I wanted to know more about what's happened in Syria, but as I kept reading it I kept thinking: This is exactly the kind of reporting that requires a subscriber base. Expensive, dangerous, essential. You simply can't finance this kind of work with clicks. Read the whole thing, and if you don't already, perhaps consider paying for the privilege. I do.

Inside Gay Pakistan

by Joe
The BBC reports on gay life in Pakistan:
Pakistan is not the kind of place that most people would associate with gay liberation. But some say the country is a great place to be gay - even describing the port city of Karachi as "a gay man's paradise". Underground parties, group sex at shrines and "marriages of convenience" to members of the opposite sex are just some of the surprises that gay Pakistan has to offer. Under its veneer of strict social conformity, the country is bustling with same-sex activity. Danyaal, as he's asked to be known, is a 50-something businessman who lives in an affluent part of Karachi, and uses his smartphone to organise Karachi's gay party scene. "One of the first things I did online, maybe 12 years ago, was type in G - A - Y and hit search. Back then I found a group and made contact with 12 people in this city," he says. "These days there are smartphone apps that use GPS to tell you how close you are to another gay person with an online profile. There are thousands of gay men online in Pakistan at any one time."
The report goes on to note that almost all gay men in Pakistan marry women in order to please their families. Doesn't really sound like "paradise."  (Tipped by JMG readers Eric and Eugene)

A few months ago David Chambon has been working on a series of amazing photographs of insects covered in dew drops. If the “creativity” of the phenomenon is due to the nature only, Chambon takes credit for putting in focus, with exemplary photographic expertise, these little natural wonders.

Massive Solar Storm Set To Pummel Earth

by dave-dr-gonzo
Shainaf87

just FYI

tn_5863_whenthesuneruptsThe tempest of ionized matter and charged particles could disrupt satellite and radio activity:

The sun fired off an intense solar storm at Earth Wednesday (Aug. 21) — the second in two days — hurtling billions of tons of charged particles at our planet, but should not pose a threat to people on the ground, NASA says.

The solar eruption, called a coronal mass ejection, occurred yesterday at 1:24 a.m. EDT (0524 GMT) and sent charged particles streaking outward at 380 miles per second. That’s just over 1.3 million mph (2.2 million km/h). The solar fallout from the sun storm is expected to reach Earth within the next three days.

“These particles cannot travel through the atmosphere to harm humans on Earth, but they can affect electronic systems in satellites and on the ground,” NASA officials explained in a statement. [Solar Max Photos: Sun Storms of 2013]

Wednesday’s solar storm erupted just 21 hours after another powerful coronal mass ejection (NASA calls them CMEs) on Tuesday (Aug. 20). That solar tempest also sent billions of tons of solar particles on their way to Earth.

Maybe Ben Affleck Will Be Awesome

by Miss Cellania
Shainaf87

bummer for me! really do hope he proves me wrong.

(YouTube link)

By now you've heard the news that Ben Affleck has been cast as Batman in the upcoming film tentatively titled Superman vs. Batman. The outcry of protest on the internet was immediate. Jason Inman lays out the case for giving him the benefit of a doubt at this point. Contains NSFW language. I'll reserve judgment on the casting -after all, we heard the same reaction about Heath Ledger as The Joker. And now we're going to have to go through this again. -Thanks, Jason!

Spider Mama

by Miss Cellania

Sculptor Louise Bourgeois, who was also called Spiderwoman, left her mark in many places. Her 30-foot-tall sculpture of a spider, called Maman, has been installed permanently in Canada, Russia, Spain, Japan, Qatar, South Korea, and the United Kingdom. It was also installed temporarily in many other places, including Switzerland, shown in the above picture. The sculpture was inspired by Bourgeois' mother, who died when the artist was 21.

Bourgeois says, "The Spider is an ode to my mother. She was my best friend. Like a spider, my mother was a weaver. My family was in the business of tapestry restoration, and my mother was in charge of the workshop. Like spiders, my mother was very clever. Spiders are friendly presences that eat mosquitoes. We know that mosquitoes spread diseases and are therefore unwanted. So, spiders are helpful and protective, just like my mother."

I don’t know about you, but few exciting things ever transpired for me on a school bus. It always smelled like gas fumes, and its primary purpose was to transport me to a place I didn’t always want to to go. But this bus, designed by architectural student Hank Butitta, is a whole different story.

Also somewhat disinterested with school, Butitta was tired of designing buildings that didn’t exist for imaginary clients and wanted to work with his hands to put some of his ideas into practice. So, he bought a bus off Craigslist and along with some help from friend Justin Evidon and brother Vince, the trio spent nearly 14 weeks converting the ramshackle old bus into a sleek, modular living environment complete with a kitchen, bathroom, beds, storage, and even a floor made from wood panels stripped from an old gymnasium.

Now that Hank’s final presentation is over the group is embarking on a 5,000 mile tour around the U.S. which has just about reached its halfway point. You can see more photos, video, and follow their travels over at Hank Bought a Bus. (via Home Designing, Gizmodo, Le Monde Tue Nini)
