At 19 Feet, 6 Inches Long, These Are the Longest Dreadlocks in the World

by John Farrier

(Photo: Asha Zulu Mandela)

Asha Zulu Mandela of Atlanta, Georgia holds the Guinness World Record for the longest dreadlocks in the world. The official measurement is 19 feet and 6 inches, but she claims to have one strand of hair that is 55 feet long. Zoe Mintz writes in The International Business Times:

"My hair has become part of me. It is my life. I will never cut it," Mandela told The Mirror, adding that she maintained her locks even while undergoing chemotherapy treatment for cancer. The tattooed, bejeweled mother of one has also overcome two strokes and two heart attacks.

But her roughly 39 pounds of hair have also affected her spine. "The doctors seem to think I have a curvature of my spine and that it's the length and the weight of my hair that's making me curve,” she said. "Some have said my neck has collapsed at the back and that I need to be careful because I could start having spasms in my spine and probably be paralyzed."

Still, Mandela wants to keep growing her hair. "Cutting it would be equivalent to suicide. It would be like being a zombie."

Must-see morning clip: Lindsay Lohan tells Oprah about addiction

Troubled star Lindsay Lohan, who has been to rehab six times and became a tabloid staple for her erratic behavior, on Sunday night sat down with Oprah for a candid discussion about her issues.

"Are you an addict?" Winfrey asked point-blank, to which Lohan responded, "Yes." The actress admitted that she's addicted to alcohol, which has "been a gateway to other things," like cocaine.

Lohan, who has been sober for the "past few months," attributes her struggle with a chaotic childhood and success at such a young age. However, the actress doesn't blame her parents for her issues: "I hate the bad rap that people give my parents," she said. "Because they are just parents, really, at the end of the day trying to stand up for their daughter and themselves."

The actress is in "a different headspace" now, however, and is ready to "work really hard and stay focused and prove myself in the way that I did before in the past and I lost. I have to regain the trust of people in my career that have their doubts and I fully respect that on their behalf."

Chicago could be the next Detroit

HyperallergicCHICAGO — Much like the city of Detroit’s epic economic saga, this story took me on a wild goose chase. I’m an art journalist reporting on Detroit from Chicago — or, if you would prefer, the Motor City from the Windy City — and that seems odd. The media craze around Detroit just won’t quit, and Chicago is increasingly finding itself implicated in it all. Perhaps the artists are to blame.

Idaho Man Accused Of Dressing As Dog To Have Sex With Cat

by Alan

To quote the late great Jack Paar: I kid you not.

Ryan Havens Tannenholz, a self-identified “furry,” or someone who wears anthropomorphic animal fur suits, was charged with six felony counts of crimes against nature and one misdemeanor count of cruelty to an animal.

Police say the Boise man, 28, sexually abused the cat multiple times between January 2012 and January 2013. After an extensive investigation, police secured an arrest warrant July 31 and arrested him the following day…

Tannenholz portrays himself as a black and white husky he calls Bubblegum Husky, a blue fox he calls Kismet Fox or an unnamed purple canine, according to the furry community news magazine Flayrah.

He could face up to five years in prison for each of the felony counts and up to six months and a fine for the misdemeanor.

Medical Marijuana Provides Miraculous Results For 6-Year-Old Boy

by Alan

Jayden David has a rare form of epilepsy called Dravet Syndrome. He has violent seizures several times a day.

The seizures were so bad that they prevented the Modesto, California boy from walking, playing with friends and essentially living a normal life – he’s been rushed to the hospital by ambulance at least 40 times.

To combat the disease, Jayden was prescribed 12 different medications that he has to take every day. In all, the boy takes 22 pills a day.

‘At one point Jayden had seizures 24 hours a day lasting an hour and a half,’ Jayden’s father, Jason David, told KCRA. ‘I went to my doctor and said, “I don’t think Jayden is going to last, he can’t sleep, can’t eat, he hasn’t used the restroom, he can’t do anything.”’

At one point, the debilitating disease got so bad for his son that Jason said he considered killing himself.

As a last resort, Jason David opted to try a liquid form of marijuana to treat Jayden’s seizures. And it worked.

‘(The) first day I gave him medical marijuana, thank God. (It was) the first day he went seizure free in his life,’ Jason David said.

Another New Donna Summer Remix

by Joe
Over the weekend the legendary Giorgio Moroder debuted his remix of his own 1975 production, Love To Love You Baby, at the Way Out West festival in Sweden. I presume this will be included on the upcoming Donna Summer remix package from Verve Records. The audio isn't great (lots of crowd noise too) but Moroder has posted the same recording to his Soundcloud page, so we'll have to wait for a better listen.

NYC Straight Bars Dump Russian Vodka

by Joe
As I mentioned yesterday, a 200-member NYC restaurant and nightclub group has joined the boycott of Russian vodka.  Here's more on their protest in Manhattan.
Holding up a bottle of the popular Russian brand Stolichnaya, the United Restaurant and Tavern Owners Association President Paul Hurley shook his head and called for a city-wide boycott of Russian spirits and liquor. "All these vodkas here, we're going to throw them out," Hurley said. "We feel enough is enough." Hurley, who urged people to drink American-made alcohol instead, said the boycott was the first step toward pressuring Russia to change its policies toward gay people. Paddy MacCarty, who owns a Manhattan bar called Nevada Smiths, said he's planning to toss out every bottle of Russian vodka behind the bar. At least 200 New York bars and restaurants are participating in the boycott, which has spread to many gay bars across North America in the wake of a newly passed Russian law that bans the so-called "propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations."
