KOMBOH just came out with an amazing little series of “School’s Cool” illustrative prints, meant “for the schoolkid in all of us”. It’s clean and clever design like this that makes me think “why didn’t this exist when I was a schoolkid!”. In English, the title of husband and wife photographer team Kurt and Edwige Moses‘ photo series Un Petit Monde translates into “A Small World,” but there’s nothing small about the world the duo have created for the series, only its inhabitants.
The series began all the way back in 2010 “as a way to relax and explore a more creative side of my photography,” explains Kurt. “It has grown into a passion of ours and we now focus 75% of our time creating, processing, planning and building a library of fine art photographs.”
Kurt and Edwige travel all over the United States in their vintage RV (you can read about that here) setting up miniature scenes that depict everything from the daily grind of a 9-5 lifestyle, to adventures like skiing or battling a giant squid, to more relaxing endeavors like gardening — although gardening takes on a whole new meaning when the flowers are bigger than you are.
It’s a playful series that is meant to make you smile and, perhaps, inspire a bit of wanderlust at times:
“Un Petit Monde combines the challenges of capturing an evocative, aesthetically pleasing image while documenting a scene in the real world environment using only available light and existing conditions,” writes Kurt on the project’s About page. “Ultimately, it is our mission to share some of the fun and joy for life with you through our project.”

Jan Ribeiro é uma brasileira cheia de cores! A alagoana, nascida em Maceió, se formou em Jornalismo e hoje mora em Pernambuco. A mudança de estado se deu em virtude do curso de graduação em fotografia.
Por causa da faculdade, Jan desenvolveu um ensaio com base no texto de Arnaldo Antunes. ”Metade” surgiu a partir da canção/poesia Cultura do autor. A coleção de imagens apresenta tanto o encontro de duas partes, quanto a busca pela parte que lhes falta.
Um ensaio alegre e colorido que por vezes desafia o observador a descobrir o que está diante de si. Adoramos!

Tomorrow we’re flying to Wisconsin to spend Thanksgiving week with Ryan’s family – fingers crossed the plane ride with Caroline goes as smoothly as possible! Any tips for flying with a 6 month old? I’m also hoping to contribute a pie to Thanksgiving dinner, something seasonal but not obvious, but the truth is that I’m not much of a pie baker. A rainha da beleza inflável surgiu para desafiar os preconceitos sobre a beleza feminina. À medida que o debate gorda x magra/feia x bonita continua em alta na mídia, Pandemonia continua orgulhosa revestida de látex para ser a mulher “ideal”. Brilhante e hiperrealista, ela se descreve como “uma paródia social, embalada com muita artificialidade e falta de conteúdo”.
Seu objetivo é se expressar. Questionar a cultura contemporânea e a publicidade, reconstruir mitos modernos, desafiar visualmente o público e criar um estado de consciência feminina com a sua arte. A “loira burra com um ego inflado”, como ela mesmo se descreve, esteve no Brasil há algumas semanas para o desfile da Melissa no SPFW.

To commemorate the 150 year anniversary of the Gettysburg Address, Craig Welsh (of Go Welsh) developed a Kickstarter project to help spread Lincoln’s words in 2013. The project includes letterpress prints that feature the entire Address, as well as a series of moleskine notebooks that are letterpress printed with some of the key messages.
With a little over two weeks to go, he has already far surpassed his original fundraising goal, so he is in the process of coming up with additional rewards to offer backers. Keep your eye on the Kickstarter page for more info.

For Fieldwork’s one year anniversary, they developed a limited edition printed piece with the theme of “A Guide to Making Things.” The piece features illustrations by Hey Studio, which depict a set of thoughts and ideas they formed as they grew, and got some fun animation for a digital version of the guide. Their goal is to turn this first issue into an ongoing limited edition print series, working with various artists, designers and makers on different subjects in each edition. So keep an eye out for future updates.

Every so often a Kickstarter project comes through my inbox that I get really excited about, and Oakland Illustrated is definitely one of them. Curated by Oakland, California-based letterpress printing and design studio The Weekend Press, the project includes ten illustrated tributes to the their home city. Each vibrant, three-color letterpress print features a different experience in Oakland designed by one of ten amazing illustrators, including Anna Hurley, Brent Couchman, Carl Bender, Erik Marinovich, Eszter Clark, Javier Garcia, Jeffrey Bucholtz, Nate Luetkehans, Richard Perez and Albert + Marie. Lobulo é um daqueles caras super talentosos. Desde criança, quando entrava no supermercado com a mãe, escolhia os cereais sempre pela embalagem e não pelo sabor que tinham: soube o que queria ser quando crescer. Naturalmente, acabou estudando design gráfico e marketing e aprendeu que o computador era muito além de jogar pacman.
Mais de 10 anos de experiência trabalhando em estúdios e agências pelo mundo todo, o artista possui um trabalho espetacular em combinação de cores e ilustrações criadas com muita perfeição, cola e papel. E tudo feito a mão. Incrível, não?!

Earlier this week Lotta Nieminen released her first children’s book, Walk this World, a hardcover book that enables children to the explore cultural similarities and differences of people in different locations around the world. The story features page after page of colorful, detailed illustrations and over 80 flaps that open and reveal even more.
I’ve included a few spreads below, but this video is a great little introduction and provides a glimpse into some more of the details:

Heloísa Righetto é designer por formação, mas dedica-se a escrever sobre o assunto para sites, revistas e blogs no Brasil e no mundo. Mora em Londres desde 2008, trabalhando como correspondente para as mídias especializadas e também como editora do site Homebuildlife, o braço de interiores e lifestyle do WGSN.
O London Design Festival rolou entre os dias 14 e 22 de setembro, e a impressão que tive esse ano é que ele quase dobrou de tamanho! Tinha muita coisa legal pra ver, mas tem sempre um lugar que não dá pra ficar fora da agenda durante esses dias: o museu Victoria & Albert. Já faz alguns anos que o V&A funciona como uma espécie de QG do London Design Festival, abrindo suas portas para artistas e designers fazerem instalações e interferirem com o acervo. Acho muito bacana que um museu grande e tradicional como esse permita esse tipo de coisa – faz a arte ficar mais palpável, mais próxima do visitante.
Um dos projetos do V&A para o LDF esse ano foi o “God is in the details”: 14 designers (como Tom Dixon, Faye Toogood, Ross Lovegrove entre outros) foram convidados a escolher uma peça do acervo para ser “explorada” com lentes super potentes fornecidas pela Swarovski. Ou seja, detalhes delicados e as vezes muito pequenos (que acabam passando despercebidos) de esculturas, pinturas e objetos históricos foram “maximizados”, bastava olhar através da lente colocada em frente ao objeto.
Bom, esse é só um gostinho do que foi o festival – rolou muita foto no twitter e instagram com a tag #ldf13.

One of the beautiful things about sketchbooks is their ability to take you into a world of your own creation, a place where your imagination can run wild and even the sky is no limit. As a young boy growing up in Baltimore, Aaron Becker became attuned to this notion early on. “Like many American boys born in the wake of the Apollo missions,” he writes in his website’s bio, “I decided early on I would be an astronaut.” After deciding that these dreams might be more work than he had originally anticipated, however, Becker shifted his sights from the cosmos to crayons—creating art that was as otherworldly and exotic as the places he once dreamed of traveling.
Over the past several years, Becker has honed his skill for imaginative world-creation as a designer for the film industry, creating preliminary concept drawings for such films as The Polar Express, A Christmas Carol, Mars Needs Moms, and Pixar’s Carstoons series. This past summer, Becker’s first children’s book was released. Aptly titled Journey, the wordless book tells the story of a young girl who draws a magical door onto her bedroom wall and is transported to a world of eye-popping wonder. A sort of updated Harold and The Purple Crayon (albeit on a much grander, more lavish scale), the newly published volume is already receiving stupendous accolades—The New York Times called the book “a masterwork.”
Aaron’s sketchbooks are, as with his first children’s book, like diving into a whole new world. With exacting, fine-tipped sketches laid out in paneled narratives, these preliminary drawings tell stories of their own—they provide insight into Becker’s creative mind, the meticulousness of his craft, and the process through which he constructs his dazzling landscapes. Ainda criança, Bruna Lourenço imaginava casas e espaços mirabolantes e, quando cresceu, sua única alternativa foi se tornar designer de interiores. Mas eis que ela percebeu uma segunda vocação, o jornalismo. Hoje em dia ela une o útil ao agradável em seu blog Referans, trazendo mil e uma referências garimpadas no infinito universo das cores. Ah, e também escreve diariamente no blog Casa de Valentina.
Algumas das fotos desses prédios são tão legais que viram até um pattern, dependendo do ângulo em que a imagem é capturada. Olha só:
My dear friend and co-worker Amy Azzarito has been hunting down a hanging ship for as long as I’ve known her. Each year we trek to Brimfield and I find her gently pushing aside boxes and frames looking for a hidden sailboat figure she can hang from her ceiling. I can’t remember the original inspiration for the project, but I think it’s such a beautiful idea and it feels quintessentially ‘Amy’ to have something so beautiful and whimsical drifting overhead. We were in Catbird the other day when we saw this incredible sailing ship kite from Haptic Lab and it seemed like it might be the perfect fit. Then I saw it in person again at the Brooklyn Flea on Sunday and was blown away seeing it in action and up close in detail. Each handmade kite is a certified Fair Trade product, made in collaboration with Balinese artisans exclusively for Haptic Lab from locally-sourced bamboo and nylon. They definitely fly (they’re not just to display, although you certainly can) and each kit comes with a kite handle, flying line and easy assembly instructions to get you up and flying in no time. I’m completely smitten with the indigo version of the kite, but all three colors (white, green and indigo) are beautiful. Simples e, por isso mesmo, impressionantes as belas montagens da série Leaves, do artista malaio Tang Chiew Ling. Misturando desenhos feitos à mão com folhas, ele criou um originalíssimo ensaio, com direito até a um Bansky, como pode se ver acima.
Cada criação nasceu a partir de folhas distintas do seu jardim colhidas no tempo livre disponível em seu dia a dia de designer gráfico. Segundo Tang, as ilustrações são feitas com materiais discretos e até mesmo desinteressantes para divertir e inspirar. Abaixo, em um desdobramento da série: croquis de vestidos de festa compõem um verdadeiro ensaio fashion!

Israel-based studio The Art of Branding took it upon themselves to create Good Morning Sunshine, a project inspired by Simon Sinek’s mission:
The designers at TAB needed a reminder to start each day with why because they believe in a world where why you do something is more valued than what you do. When you choose to live your why (your purpose), you become awakened and over time can awaken others. Just like the sun. TAB decided to take Simon’s mission and make it their own by visualizing his popular Golden Circle theory and connecting it to the sun.

This morning, I lingered in my bed a little more because today starts my fall quarter at SCAD. That essentially doesn’t really mean anything since I do the classes online and actually got a head start on my readings and assignments last week, but still, it feels like the official start of fall. I’m terribly sad to see summer go. It’s getting darker earlier in the evenings and lighter later in the mornings, although the weather is still pretty warm. I suppose there is goodness in all the seasons. A new start. A new chapter.
