Debbie Carlos Prints + Weekly Wrap Up

by Stephanie

7cc25dbd742344aba5c9c7b75afe043b_820x615
There are so many reasons to celebrate this week. Our team finalized the details and signed the contract for our second Design*Sponge Book with Artisan (yay!), our very own Silka is getting married this weekend (double yay!) and one of my favorite artists, Debbie Carlos, just released a new set of prints and a gorgeous guest print by Breanna Musgrove of Scout and Catalogue. While Silka’s big day is the main reason I’m happy this week, I’m also loving these incredible new posters from Debbie and Breanna. The guest piece from Breanna is a gorgeous large-scale ode to marbling and the stone pieces from Debbie were inspired by stone slabs found on the streets of Mexico city. I love all of the swirling pattern happening here- it’s a great way to bring some detail to your walls without going crazy with an entire wallpapered pattern. Click here to check out both and pick up your own copies at Debbie’s online shop. Have a wonderful weekend and we’ll see you on Monday! xo, grace

It might be a tad early to start discussing 2014 calendars, but that doesn’t stop me from adding them to my wishlist. This beautiful watercolor calendar is from California’s Rocket Ink. From soft pastel minerals to bold gemstones illustrated in vibrant pinks, this 11″ x 14″ calendar is pretty enough to frame, but functional enough for everyday around-the-house use. A little guy named Projecteo

a little guy named projecteo - drifter and the gypsy blog

I received this little guy in the mail from Projecteo and am loving him so far! Projecteo takes your Instagram pictures and displays them in a (mini) version of an old-school projector.

The Projecteo team does this by developing your Instagrams on to a single frame of 35mm Kodak film which they cut and set into a custom wheel. Each wheel holds nine images. My Projecteo is so stinking cute! I think I might have to give this guy a name;) Ideas?

As Ilustrações “dark” de Ruben Ireland

by Jessica Bueno

20 Perfect Paper DIYs

by Grace Bonney
paperprojects
One of the things I always find myself with an excess of after any re-organizing project is leftover paper. Old newspapers, magazine clippings, cardboard scraps– they seem to accumulate in the oddest of places and rather than banishing them to the (recycling) curb, I thought it would be fun to find interesting ways to reuse them. So I went through six and a half years of D*S DIY posts to find 20 of my favorite paper-based projects. From paper chandeliers and nite lights to stationery, paper flowers and storage baskets, it’s amazing to see what you can do with some humble paper scraps. Thanks to all of the clever contributors who came up with these ideas over the past few years! xo, grace
This post is brought to you by Paper to Petal, 75 whimsical flowers to craft by hand. Imaginatively inspired, you’ll be amazed how easy it is to produce these gorgeous handmade paper flower projects. Order your copy here.

The Fadeaway Girl

by Lydia Nichols

For the month of August, a series of guest posters will be filling in on DWL with daily posts. Today’s posts come to you from illustrator Lydia Nichols For more from Lydia, be sure to  follow her on Twitter and Dribble. Enjoy!

The first time I saw the work of Coles Phillips as an illustration undergraduate, everything I thought about illustration changed. Being in a very traditional painting-oriented program, I was used to feasting of beautiful works on art that were technically stunning, but sometimes lacked that little something to put it over the edge. Born in 1880, Phillips’ work felt fresh and contemporary in spite of being created nearly a hundred years prior. Best know for his “fadeaway girl,” Phillips’ mastery of negative space, use of pattern, and sophisticated color palette still stand the test of time.

His cleverness resulted in more than just beautiful imagery—it allowed magazines like Life to save money. At a time when full color was becoming all the rage—and quite the expensive—Phillips was creating equally alluring images using fairly limited palettes. I love when parameters can bring about such amazing solutions!

I’ve always liked that aspect of image making—it can be a visual challenge, a puzzle of shape, color, and space. Many have since followed in Phillips’ footsteps and I thought it would be fun to take a look at how these same principals are in use today.

STERLING HUNDLEY

Another personal long-time favorite, Sterling Hundley paints and composes his pieces in unexpected ways. There’s always another layer to his work or an unusual, forced perspective. It always takes a moment to realize what you’re seeing isn’t exactly what you thought it was.

MALIKA FAVRE

French “designer led” illustrator Malika Favre has a far more graphic approach. The way her shapes fit together is simply masterful!

JAMES BOAST

Like Favre, James Boast has bold, shape-driven style accentuated by subtle textures. This piece in particular exemplifies how little information actually needs to be shown in order to communicate an idea. It reads almost instantaneously even though we don’t actually see much of the soccer player’s body.

Roman Muradov

What I love about this piece is how nearly unexpected the “fadeaway” aspect is—Roman Muradov balances his shapes and colors in just such a way, you almost don’t even notice his excellent use of negative space.

Art Nouveau & Art Deco as Design Inspiration

by Gerren Lamson
Daniellebo.o3

...sigh

For the month of August, a series of guest posters will be filling in on DWL with daily posts. Today’s posts come to you from Gerren Lamson of Creative Market. For more from Gerren, be sure to check out his shop and follow him on Twitter. Enjoy!

I’m a huge fan of both the Art Nouveau and Art Deco movements respectively. I love discovering visual inspiration gems from these movements because they usually exude a delicate balance between geometric structure and ornate, organic embellishment. Nouveau pieces lean towards the ornate side, and Deco pieces lean towards structural side. Both movements offer a rich pool of visual inspiration that could potentially inspire and inform our design work today.

Art Nouveau (1880 — 1910) was a reaction to academic art through the use of organic forms, curved lines, and unity with the natural environment. Advocates of Art Nouveau described it as a ‘total style’ and a ‘way of life’ — and people embraced it by bringing this decorative style into their households and supporting it in the fine arts as well.

Art Deco (1925 — 1940) was revealed during (and named after) the Internationale des Arts Decoratifs held in Paris in 1925. It can be summarized as applied decoration to geometric, streamline structure, and contains within it the idea of decadence and opulence in both visuals and lifestyle.

Why Art Nouveau & Art Deco?
In sharing a quick round-up of inspiring images of these art movements, I’m very curious as to what it may look like for designers to revive and retrofit some of the creative thinking from these periods in response to the minimal, modern design aesthetic that’s prevalent right now. And, while I’m leaning heavily towards print and illustration samples below, there is a lot of inspiration to gather from architecture, jewelry, furniture and other art mediums too. Go exploring!

Eyeist

by Rebekah

On occasion as a blogger I get to review products and have the incredible chance to write articles for other websites. A few months ago I was given the opportunity to do a review for a new site called, Eyeist over on photo.net. I had never heard of Eyeist before but after my thirty minute interactive session with the founder, Allegra Wilde I was blown away. Did you know that if you are a budding  photographer you can have your work reviewed and critiqued by top players in the world of photography? I had no clue...I loved the process and came away with this thirty image portfolio and an armload of ideas on how to improve my work. I wanted to share this one with you guys because it was just that good! You can read my full experience over on photo.net (here)!

I know many of you are photographers - what are things that you have done to improve your skill and eye for capturing beauty, would you ever consider getting an online review of your work?

Coffee!

by Luka Va.

I think Melbourne smells like coffee.
There is even a coffee expo. I got involved in it too – Me and two more artists had to decorate the coffee machines for an upcoming auction. If you know anyone planning to open a cafe in Australia – tell them to come and have a look on those Italian (of course!) machines.
This was one of the sketches – coffee monster, but together with the client we came up with another idea.

After that there was some stencil cutting.

And spray painting in the basement.

And more stencils.

And markers.

The result! Well, it is jut front panel, hope to get the picture of the whole machine.

And the monster? It became a greeting card!

Party Kits by Yellow Owl Workshop

by Maxwell Tielman

yellowowlpartykit_1

Everybody who knows me knows how much I love to throw parties. Like, love. And by party, I don’t mean sissy Lindsay Lohan-style. When I throw a party, I go hard. Really hard. Like, paper invitations, cheese plates, and crudités kind of hard. Sometimes there’s even a theme—I don’t mess around. This is why, when I stumbled upon Yellow Owl Workshop’s booth at this year’s National Stationery Show, I fell head-over-heels for their new paper party kits. These little all-in-ones have everything: invites, envelopes, favor bags, and stickers that double as seals for the envelopes and favor bags. With kits for everyday parties and special holidays, the awesome folks at Yellow Owl have taken the guesswork out of planning, so you can focus on what’s really important: getting down. Check out all of the kits and links to purchase them after the jump! —Max

Sketchbook Sneak Peek: Stephanie Graegin

by Maxwell Tielman

Graegin1sketchbook

Getting a peek into an artist’s sketchbook is oftentimes like getting to a glimpse into his or her mind. Filled with unfinished pieces, doodles, and ideas, they often act as a portrait of their creator—or a look into their own imagined worlds. Stephanie Graegin, a Brooklyn-based children’s illustrator, is no stranger to different worlds: her work often depicts a fantasy realm in which animals speak like people and take part in the many of the same activities (like riding the subway!). Stylistically, her illustrations are not just fantastical, but cute as a button, with purposeful pencil strokes and a warm autumnal palette. Her sketchbooks, filled with tiny pencil-drawn vignettes, carry much of the same picture-perfection as her finished works. Each drawing seems to have been crafted with the same consideration and the same amount of love, so much so that the characters inhabiting them appear ready to spring to life on the page. Check out the rest of Stephanie’s sketchbook pages and her own words about sketchbook keeping after the jump! —Max

Lindo!

Kite Mosquito Patch te deixa invisível a mosquitos

by Follow the Colours

followthecolours-Kite-Mosquito-Patch-1

Adoramos!
