salted butter chocolate chunk shortbread

by deb

Can there be a cookie of the year? Sure, it’s possible that I spend too much time consuming food media, the takes, the Tweets, the Instagram Stories. But if I didn’t, I wouldn’t have seen Alison Roman’s Salted Butter and Chocolate Chunk Shortbread Cookies virtually everywhere, weakening my resistance to the point that I had to try them, and when I did, realizing that just in case you’d missed them on, like, Refinery 29 or Eater or in her incredible first cookbook, I had to tell you about them because they should not be missed.

Your Best Defense for Cleaning Up Sticky Dough — Holiday Cleanup

by Ayn-Monique Klahre

I'm not a huge baker (Christmas cookies are my one exception), so my mother and I have gone back and forth on the virtues of making your own pie crust versus buying the ready-made kind. In case there's any confusion: She likes to make it, and I tend to buy it.

Even though the recipe for making pie crusts is fairly simple and definitely more delicious, I find the cleanup to be annoying — all that flour everywhere, not to mention the sticky dough that gets on your mixing bowl, cooking utensils, and countertops. It just seems to cling, and tackling it with my usual sponge and hot, soapy water only seems to spread it (and gum up the sponge, too).

Well, turns out I've been doing it wrong. The best defense for cleaning up sticky dough is actually the opposite of my instinct: cold water, not hot.

Recipe: Cinnamon-Sugar Dutch Baby Casserole — Recipes from The Kitchn

by Kelli Foster

With its puffed edges and eggy pancake-meets-popover texture, a Dutch baby pancake is guaranteed to delight a crowd every time you pull one from the oven. This version, baked in a trusty 9x13-inch baking dish, has even more than what meets the eye, with a crackly cinnamon-sugar layer on the bottom and swirled throughout the batter. Top it with some warm apple slices and a dollop of whipped cream and you're good to go. Best of all, it is nearly effortless to pull off.

An Incredible Edible Roasted ‘Alien’ Facehugger Made Out of Chicken, Sausage and Snow Crab

by Lori Dorn

For Halloween 2017, the creative culinary blogger Necro Nom-nom-nomicon aka Tye Lombardi made an absolutely incredible, edible roasted version of the iconic Facehugger from the 1979 film Alien. The recipe is a bit complicated and requires a bit of time, but Necro Nom-nom-nomicon offered up easy to follow, step by step instructions on her site. Keep in mind, however, that the creator of this dish was warned by her family not to make this recipe for Thanksgiving.

Made from a full-sized roasting chicken, snow crab legs, and a homemade chicken sausage tail, this sweet slab of petrifying poultry is smokey, succulent, and has just enough bite from a secret ingredient to make you cautiously come back for more. In short, it’s damn good. …Now, before we get too far into this, let me say that yes, this can absolutely be done with a turkey as well and would make the perfect show-stopping centerpiece to any Thanksgiving meal. I just didn’t have the oven space for a full turkey face hugger. Maybe next year?!

Why I Stopped Drinking Almond Milk & Went Back to Regular Milk Instead — Strong Opinions

by Anjali Prasertong

I've never been a big milk drinker, but I pour it over cereal or granola, add a splash to black tea, and order the occasional cappuccino. A couple years ago I discovered almond milk, and making the switch from cow's milk to non-dairy milk felt like a no-brainer. It seemed like everyone around me was giving up dairy for health reasons, and since I wasn't particularly attached to milk I joined in.

But then I learned a little more — and stopped drinking alternative milks altogether. Here's why I made the switch back to cow's milk.
