history of the entire world, i guess

by Jason Kottke

You may remember Bill Wurtz from his video history of Japan, which I called “the most entertaining history of anything I have ever seen”. I still stand by that, but his new video on the history of the Earth from before the Big Bang — “a long time ago, actually never, also now, nothing is nowhere” — to the present day is just as good. On the development of the ozone layer billions of years ago:

Hey, can we go on land?

NO.

Why?

The Sun is a deadly lazer.

Oh, ok.

Not anymore, there’s a blanket.

Watch What Happens When an Algorithm Tries to Predict the Next Frame 100,000 Times in a Row

by Andrew Liszewski on Sploid, shared by Andrew Liszewski to Gizmodo

Like an athlete trying to push their body to its extreme limits, artist Damien Henry was curious what would happen if you asked a predictive algorithm to calculate the next frame of video in a sequence, again and again and again, over 100,000 times.

I would still play this dated, lost Sonic skateboarding game

by Chris Carter

This has been one of my favorite episodes of the Unseen64 series, partially because of the lengths that folks have gone to in the name of game preservation. Years back there was a Sonic-themed skateboarding game slated for Xbox, PS2, and GameCube from a relatively obscure developer called Vision Scape.

Built as a prototype the project ended up getting out into the wild over the years, but the story of how it met its end is rather bleak. Featuring Sonic and Shadow, much of it apes the Tony Hawk series, right down to an Emerald basically representing a Secret Tape collectible. But based on some tinkering with another mode, it's also themed around Downhill Jam's race-centric gimmick, which makes sense when it's Sonic we're talking about here. In other words, this is a pretty comprehensive mockup and even in its limited state, shows a lot of promise.

After the developer assembled the prototype and sat down with the head of Sonic Team for a formal meeting, it was agreed that they would move forward with the project after a design document was proposed. So why didn't it happen? Well, Vision Scape gave Sega the docs, but didn't hear anything back. There were no hard feelings apparently at the time, but they did feel burned when they basically took their idea and crafted their own Sonic Riders a few years later. The team was essentially screwed by way of an NDA they had signed at the start of their partnership -- Sega and Sonic Team to date have declined to comment.

There's no way to officially know what happened, but it does look bad on Sega's part. Either way I'm just glad that the prototype exists and posterity will be able to see it, and make their own decisions.

What happened after Prometheus? How does that lead into Alien: Covenant? We won’t know for sure until the new film opens on May 19 but a new short film gives us a pretty good idea.

Genyo Takeda, creator of Punch-Out!!, retires from Nintendo

by Cory Arnold

Veteran hardware developer Genyo Takeda, one of the longest tenured employees of Nintendo, has decided to retire after 45 years. The open position will be filled by Ko Shiota. On top of developing consoles like the Wii, Takeda created hit games Punch-Out!! and StarTropics.

Following the passing of Satoru Iwata, Takeda's name was in the hat along with Shigeru Miyamoto to become to next president of Nintendo. Perhaps not a household name like Shigeru Miyamoto or Satoru Iwata, Genyo Takeda is very much a pillar of Nintendo whose hard work and brilliance should not be ignored.

These Restaurants Hook Customers With Their Hilarious Names

by Zeon Santos

(Image Link)

Restaurateurs can get customers to eat at their restaurants by mailing out menus and coupons, making food so good that Yelp reviews and word of mouth bring in the eaters, or they can use a gimmick.

And the most popular gimmick is also the most effective- the funny name.

(Image Link)

Name your restaurant something forgettable like "burger barn" or "chicken shack" and you won't be remembered, but name your Thai restaurant "Thai Tanic" and people will line up to go on a culinary cruise!

(Image Link)

And when a funny name isn't enough capitalize on a pop culture trend, like Hammontree did with their Star Wars-themed grilled cheese sandwich food truck the Grillenium Falcon. If only they'd served up sandwiches shaped like the Millennium Falcon they might still be in business...

Vanquish might just be Platinum's next PC port

by Jordan Devore

The surprise release of Bayonetta on PC was a wonderful gift -- both for returning fans and those who have yet to pulverize angels -- but it may only be the start. Someone hold me. I'm feeling faint!

Earlier today, a small but conspicuous update for Bayonetta showed up on Steam, adding a Vanquish avatar to the game's Extras folder. As always, the internet sees all, and Sega was surely counting on it. While a lone avatar might seem reaching, there was a similar buildup to Bayonetta's PC reveal.

What's more, this little tease follows a representative of Platinum telling PC Gamer that "if it were up to us, we'd port all of our games to PC, but it all depends on the publishers." So, yeah. Yeah.

It's gratifying to see Bayonetta on Steam's top-sellers list after all these years, and I hope the exact same fate awaits Vanquish. For all the love it gets from fans, too few people know about this game.

Reliving the 80s: ARMIGA Amiga Emulator Review and Giveaway

by Christian Cawley

Retro gaming doesn’t get any better than booting up an Amiga emulator, loading up a disk image and watching as the Kickstart screen disappears, to be replaced by an amazing 16-bit game. Or does it? Well, that really depends on whether you’re using a software emulator, or a physical device. The ARMIGA Full Edition is an ARM-powered Amiga “clone”, and we’re giving one away to you lucky retro gaming fans! Read on to find out how to enter. What is an Amiga? There was a time when the PC was not the all-powerful, all-conquering behemoth. A time when the IBM-compatible...

mika-3mk29a:

idk why i just remembered this but all throughout kindergarten and first grade i used to draw a lil snail in the corner of every paper i had to turn in because it was a happy snail so i thought it would make my teachers happy when they were grading papers because i was a pure and simple child but in 2nd grade my teacher would take off 2 points if i drew it on my homework and 5 points if i drew it on a quiz or test so i stopped but like
it was so harmless it was just a lil shitty doodle of a smiling snail it wasn’t distracting me or anything from the task at hand
so i’d like to say to mrs whoeverthefuck that snail was supposed to be a happy thing u bitch

This perfectly describes what is wrong with our education system
