John McAfee In Crazytown

by Jon Evans
john-mcafee “The press has portrayed me alternately as a mad genius or a mad psychotic genius,” began the infamous John McAfee, speaking at Def Con–and why break that streak now? I must admit: when he’s crazy, he’s crazy like a fox. Ultimately, though, as insane and riveting as his tale is, what’s most interesting to me is the way he has weirdly come to symbolize his… Read More

Tick Bite Can Trigger Allergy to Red Meat

by Miss Cellania

The Lone Star tick is called that because it was found in Texas -and throughout the South. This insect’s bite can cause a strange reaction: an allergic reaction to red meat, such as beef, pork, venison, or rabbit. And it’s spreading- Lone Star ticks have been found all the way up the eastern seaboard of the U.S. One allergist on Long Island has seen almost 200 cases of reactions to meat caused by the tick.

The bugs harbor a sugar that humans don't have, called alpha-gal. The sugar is also found in red meat — beef, pork, venison, rabbit — and some dairy products. It's usually fine when people encounter it through food that gets digested.

But a tick bite triggers an immune system response, and in that high-alert state, the body perceives the sugar the tick transmitted to the victim's bloodstream and skin as a foreign substance, and makes antibodies to it. That sets the stage for an allergic reaction the next time the person eats red meat and encounters the sugar.

It’s not yet clear whether the meat allergy triggered by the tick is permanent. Those who have suffered a reaction are wary of tempting fate. Read more about the Lone Star tick at NBC. -via Digg

Today, I went to a coworker's wedding. Instead of getting to celebrate their marriage, we spent most of the service being lectured by the priest on how women are a freak by-product of "God's masterpiece design" and are the cause of all the world's problems. FML

This Outrageous Bloody Mary Includes a Whole Chicken

by John Farrier

(Photo: @TeamSobelman)

Forty-five years ago, humanity reached beyond the barrier of this world and touched the surface of another celestial body. And it was Americans who accomplished this unprecedented feat.

Some people say that America can no longer do great things. But they are wrong. When it comes to building Bloody Marys, Americans are not only constructing alcoholic marvels, but doing so at astunning pace.

Sobelman's, a bar in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, has pushed the envelope of human achievement by inventing the Chicken Fried Bloody Beast. It contains "cheese, sausage, pickles, olives, onions, mushrooms, asparagus, scallions, shrimp, lemon, Brussels sprouts, tomatoes, celery," and a whole fried chicken.

Cattle Call

by noreply@blogger.com (Miss Cellania)

Farmer Derek Klingenberg serenades his cattle with a little trombone music. But where are the cattle? Never fear: if you play it, they will come. And these cows are Lorde fans, or else they just like that guy with the trombone who feeds them. Klingenberg ends the concert with a little singalong. (via Tastefully Offensive)

LinkedIn Busted In Wage Theft Investigation

by Unknown Lamer
fiannaFailMan (702447) writes that LinkedIn was just fined for the all too common practice of requiring workers to work off the clock Following an investigation by the U.S. Department of Labor, LinkedIn has agreed to pay over $3 million in overtime back wages and $2.5 million in liquidated damages to 359 former and current employees working at company branches in four states. The Fair Labor Standards Act requires companies to have record-keeping systems in place to record overtime hours worked and to ensure that employees are paid for those hours, requirements that the company was not meeting.

First-person shooter Toxikk wants to frag like it's 1999

by Darren Nakamura
Fatbob

this shit looks good, all the best parts of q3 and halo in one game

First-person shooters have come a long way since we called them "DOOM clones" back in the nineties. After Halo, Call of Duty, and Gears of War, most have class-based gameplay, role-playing game elements, regenerating health, cover systems, and/or ironsight aiming. Toxikk from Reakktor Studios (kkool naming kkonvention bro) wants to return to the genre's roots.

The trailer above does a good job demonstrating Toxikk's mission statement (including a great bait and switch regarding free-to-play). Without any of the more recent trappings of the first-person shooter genre, it looks to be fast-paced with a good amount of verticality. Removing the need to reload seems like such a strange concept today, but what really takes it back in time is the ability to hold every weapon at once. Rad.

Toxikk is planned as a PC release, and will hit Steam Early Access this winter. Since it is designed with mouse and keyboard in mind, Reakktor has no plans to release on consoles.

Physicist Invents Color-Changing Ice Cream

by Miss Cellania

There’s nothing better than a cone of cold, fruit-flavored ice cream on a hot day, unless it’s a cold, fruit-flavored ice cream cone that changes color as you lick it! That’s what Xamaleón does. The name of the ice cream, “Xamaleón,” is meant to resemble “chameleon,” according to the ice cream’s inventor, Manuel Linares. Linares is a former physicist who opened an ice cream shop in Blanes, Spain. He’s not giving away the secrets of the color-changing ice cream, which tastes like a combination of fruit.

What we do know is the ice cream is made with natural ingredients like strawberries, banana, vanilla and almonds. Additionally, Linares sprays what he calls a “love elixir” on the ice cream after it’s scooped to help accelerate the reaction. We probably won’t know the whole story behind Xamaleón until Linares secures a patent for his creation, which is pending.

I wouldn’t worry too much about secret ingredients; it’s probably something like this. Read more about the color-changing ice cream at Discover magazine. -via Digg

EmDrive Is an Engine That Breaks the Laws of Physics and Could Take Us to Mars

by Jason Abbruzzese
Mars
Feed-twFeed-fb

An experimental engine is gaining acceptance among scientists, and could introduce a new era of space travel — it only had to break a law of physics to do so.

The picture, below, is of the EmDrive. It uses electricity to generate microwaves, which then bounce around in a closed space and generate thrust. The drive does not need propellant, an important part of current space-travel mechanics

em drive

The force generated by the drive is not particularly strong, but the implications are big. Multiple independent experiments have now replicated the drive's ability to generate thrust, albeit with varying success. Using panels to convert solar energy into electricity and then into thrust, opens the door to perpetual space travel fueled by the stars Read more...

Fixing a 7,000-Ton Drill

by Soulskill
An anonymous reader writes: At the end of last year, we discussed Bertha, the world's largest tunnel boring machine. During an effort to drill a viaduct beneath downtown Seattle, the machine — clocking in at 7,000 tons, 57.5 feet in diameter, and 326 feet long — got hamstrung by an 8-inch-diameter steel pipe. The complexity and scope of the repair plan rivals that of the project itself. "The rescue operation (workers call it "the intervention") began in late spring with construction on the shaft to reach Bertha. Workers have been sinking pilings in a ring to prevent the shaft from collapsing, using 24,000 cubic yards of concrete — enough for a medium-size office building. Once that ring is complete, digging on the shaft will start. When the shaft is ready, Bertha, which is damaged but still operational, will be turned back on so she can chew through the concrete pilings to reach the center of the shaft. There, the machine will rest on a cradle where workers can detach the front end and hoist it out." That detachable front end? It weighs about 2,000 tons by itself. The repair bill is estimated at about $125 million.

SpongeBob and His Friends in Human Form

XiaozuoZ, an artist in Hubei Province, China, created these striking images of SpongeBob SquarePants characters. Perhaps he was inspired by the new SpongeBob movie, which will be released next year. But even if the movie is his inspiration, his take on the character designs is unique.
