2 Things To Know So You Aren't Accidentally A Terrible Bummer Around Black Folk
MollystixTotally agree, "I'm not a racist, but..." You are better off not saying the sentence at all, and hopefully rethinking the thought to get rid of it in general.
Before I knew any better, I made up a name for those slightly offensive comments about people of color I used to hear at the very white college I attended. I called it mini-racism because it's not quite to the point everyone agrees is racist, but it still may be. Not quite in a KKK uniform, but definitely at a Halloween party in blackface.
Those comments are actually called microaggressions, and they happen a lot — but more often when you're the only like you around (at the office, or a mostly white college you attend ... maybe). Have you said anything like the examples below?

It's No Longer Hard To Guess Why People Are In Federal Prison
MollystixAgreed, why, just why!?
No, wait, lemme guess. OK ... not "National Security," not ... "Continuing Criminal Enterprise" ... hmm ... I'm gonna have to say, "Miscellaneous." Oh, it was drug offenses? Now you're boring me.
WHY ARE DRUG OFFENSES STILL CRAZY-ILLEGAL?!?

One Man Asks Obama To Honor The Pledge He Made On MTV 7 Years Ago
MollystixKind of drags at the end for me, but yeah, Obama! Stick to your promise please!
Back in 2007, this question about net neutrality might have seemed like some overly niche or nerdy thought exercise. But now, there are real risks to the current openness and fairness of the Internet. Will Obama make good on the pledge he made as a candidate?

The Guy From ‘Harry Potter’ Is Asked About The ‘Friend Zone’ And Responds By Respecting Women
MollystixWell played sir, well played!
I’ve never thought of Daniel Radcliffe as being such a decent guy, but perhaps I just wasn’t paying attention. Watch as he wastes no time letting the interviewer know exactly how he feels about the "friend zone."
His response at 1:00 is a perfect summation of the entire concept.

Rip Off Your Pants And Rejoice! There's Absolutely Nothing Wrong With Your Thighs!
MollystixWomen, and men, stop caring about what media says you should look like. Be the best fit for your body, and you're good!
Ya know what? Our bodies have kinda gotten a raw deal in the media. We're constantly being told that they should look one way, but then we're supposed to feel bad when they just do what they naturally do! Case in point: cellulite. Most of what we hear about cellulite is completely untrue! So if you've ever needed a reason to stop worrying about your body's wrinkles and dimples, this lady has five, just for you.
Side note: This video focuses on how cellulite differs between cisgender men's and women's bodies and inadvertently leaves out others on the gender and sexuality spectrum. So, just a friendly reminder that while lots of cis women have cellulite, they aren't the only ones, and it's still totally cool and not a big deal to have it.
This video comes from Stuff Mom Never Told You, which not only has a funny and smart YouTube channel about the science and sociology of the differences between ladies and gents, but also a funny and smart podcast that examines that stuff too!

An 83-Year-Old Movie Shows Exactly What To Say To Anyone Who Tells You How To Live Your Life
MollystixYay feminism from 80 years ago. We are still fighting the battle!
If we look at this movie scene that's over 80 years old and still think, “Yeah! She makes a good point!” then feminism hasn’t quite worked yet. We’ll get there, ladies and gents!
I found this on my friend Meredith’s Tumblr. If you know the person who made this GIF set, find me on Twitter, and I will link to them and say their name and give them the credit they deserve!
OK, so the larger plot of the 1931 movie "Possessed," where Joan Crawford plays “an ambitious factory girl,” isn't the world's most tried-and-true, Gloria-Steinem-approved feminist MOMENT. Still, feminism contains so many multitudes, and this particular and specific scene definitely shows someone was trying — 83 years ago. Progress begins slowly. Treasure the small steps.
MOVIE HISTORY TIME: Movies from this time were made in pre-code Hollywood, before the enforcement of the Motion Picture Production Code, or Hays Code. These movies were kinda edgy because, well, they just ignored the rules. After the code (which was originally created by a random Catholic dude and a Jesuit priest) took over, not only were there fewer swear words and less of the sexier stuff you’d expect, but the censors also enforced a whole lotta arbitrary gender norm kind of stuff, too. This video all about pre-code Hollywood goes into detail. AND to add awesomeness to awesomeness, this girl-power scene above was written by male screenwriter Edgar Selwyn, who adapted the script of female writer Lenore J. Coffee. Ladies and dudes having major creative (feminist?) solidarity 80+ years ago. It's a beautiful thing.
Taxi the Service Dog Gets His Own Yearbook Photo!
MollystixWould Bear do this? Could he?
He goes everywhere with the soon-to-be eight-grader [Rachel Benke], including accepting awards at school, celebrating birthdays, and even on the school track where he one day sprung into action. "Her aide was holding Taxi on the side and he just started pulling away from the aide as hard as he could trying to get to Rachel," [Theresa] Benke said. She said once they got her inside, Rachel had a grand mal seizure, and Taxi wouldn't leave the girl's side. "I don't know how Taxi new this, but he wouldn't let anyone near her until the paramedics arrived,"- KHOU 11.

Gif of the Day: One of the Best Cricket Plays Ever
MollystixThe Greatest! (just not Ultimate)
If the ball had landed outside the boundary without bouncing first, the batsman would have scored the maximum possible runs from a single shot - 6. If the fielder catches the ball, he's out. However, if the fielder catches the ball but then steps outside the boundary, the batsman scores 6 runs again. What you see here is the fielder attempt to catch the ball, but realise that he can't do that without stepping the boundary. His teammate has read the situation and is supporting him within the boundary. When the initial catcher pushes the ball to his teammate (while still in mid-air) the catch is made and the batsman is out.

A Really Blunt And Raw Conversation Involving White Folks That Is Probably Too Awkward To Hear
MollystixMakes me really want to be part of the solution and the first step for me is self awareness.
If you've been living under a rock, you may not have heard about the whole thing with NBA owner Donald Sterling, who managed to get himself banned from the NBA after making some extremely racist comments. He dug the hole deeper, which I thought would be impossible, by doing an interview with Anderson Cooper where he planned to apologize but instead went on another racist tangent, this time attacking Magic Johnson. Because, well, actually, I have no idea why. The point is that it's not really shocking that a racist guy is racist. At least you know where you stand with that sort of racism. It's the shades of gray you have to worry about.
I'll let Elon James explain. At 1:45, he makes the best point ever about the media. At 2:47, he gets to the real point.
