Leonard Nimoy, known to generations of Star Trek fans as Mr. Spock, died this morning at his home in Los Angeles, the New York Times reports. He was 83. Susan Bay Nimoy, his wife, said that the cause of death was chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Nimoy was cast as a Vulcan, the only alien member of the original Star Trek crew, in 1966. It was a role that he embraced for the duration of his career, and one that he returned to as recently as 2013 in the theatrical reboot of the series where he played opposite Zachary Quinto. After tweeting last month that he was working on an Alien sequel at one time but had abandoned or been taken off the project, District 9 director Neill Blomkamp tweeted today that Alien is officially his next project.

In a remarkably casual message, Blomkamp tweeted, "Um... So I think it's officially my next film," alongside the image you see above and the hashtag #alien.

In January, Blomkamp tweeted out a collection of Alien images that featured Sigourney Weaver’s Ellen Ripley, a scarred Michael Biehn’s Corporal Dwayne Hicks, and other classic Alien creatures like the Xenomorphs, the eggs, and facehuggers. At the time Blomkamp wrote on twitter, “Was working on this. Don't think I am anymore. Love it though.” Following today's tweet, it looks like he is back on the project.

After directing District 9, Blomkamp directed Elysium, and his next film Chappie, releases March 6. Blomkamp's frequent collaborator, Sharlto Copley, who has appeared in all of Blomkamp's films including doing the motion capture for the titular Chappie, stars in Sony's upcoming comic book TV series, Powers.

The arrival of Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is shaking up Marvel's movie slate, resulting in delays for the third Thor movie and its feature films based on Black Panther, Captain Marvel and the Inhumans, Marvel Studios announced today.

Sony Pictures' next Spider-Man movie, which will be set in Marvel's movie canon, is being released on July 28, 2017. That's when Marvel was originally planning to release Thor: Ragnarok. The third Thor movie is now slated for release on Nov. 3, 2017.

That delay has resulted in a few more shifts. Black Panther will now be released on July 6, 2018. Captain Marvel will follow later that year on Nov. 2, 2018. And Marvel's Inhumans is slipping to July 12, 2019.

The shifting of those four films...

Actress Scarlett Johansson has signed on to play the lead in DreamWorks' upcoming Ghost in the Shell movie adaptation, Variety reports.

Johansson is known for her roles in recent films such as Lucy, Under the Skin and Marvel's Iron Man, Captain America and Avengers films. Rupert Sanders, who directed Snow White and the Huntsman, will direct the film.

Ghost in the Shell follows Motoko Kusanagi, the cyborg leader of a security squad that focuses on cyber warfare. Although it originally began in manga, the series has since bloomed into TV shows, animated films and video games. The live-action film in which Johansson will star is an adaptation of the original manga.
