For many, reading a good book can be a religious experience, but this new bookstore in Zwolle, The Netherlands takes that idea to a whole new level. Architects BK. Architecten were tasked with converting this 15th century Dominican church into a modern bookstore with the addition of 700 square meters of shopping space. But there was one major catch: all the historical elements of the 547-year-old building including stained glass windows, pipe organ, ceiling paintings and expansive arches had to remain intact.

Incredibly, BK. Architecten managed to add three levels of retail space to the side wings of the church in a manner that the entire structure can one day be removed in order to restore the church to its original design. In addition only three colors of building materials were used to mimic the existing palette of the cathedral’s interior to further ensure that the bookstore would pay reverence to the original space.

Waanders in de Broeren opened earlier this summer and you can see many more views on the architect’s website. Photos by Joop van Putten and Hans Westerink. Star Trek Online to add Dyson Spheres, dinosaurs

by Josh Tolentino

I must confess: Star Trek: Voyager was my "gateway" Star Trek. So no matter how bad you tell me it was - or how bad I realize it was, the adventures of Captain Janeway and the crew of the Federation starship Voyager will always have a special place in my heart. That's why the "Season 8" content update for Star Trek Online has me hyped, as it involves a fun Voyager callback.

According to the STO blog, for Season 8 developer Cryptic are planning to get players involved with the Voth, an obscure Delta Quadrant race from Voyager's 3rd-season episode "Distant Origins". While the episode itself was little more than an allegory for religiously-motivated "debates" over evolution and creationism, the "lore" takeaway was that the Voth were descended from Earth's dinosaurs, which, naturally, will lead them to HARNESS THE POWER in-game via T-Rex's with "Antiproton Beams and Transphasic Chroniton Mortars" on their heads. Lovely.

Players less enamored with Voyager or ancient sauroids might be placated by the setting of Season 8, which takes place on the inside of a Dyson Sphere, a massive sci-fi structure enclosing an entire star. The sphere will serve as Star Trek Online's first "Space Adventure Zone", and the hub for most of Season 8's content.

Dinosaurs.

Portal 2 and Civ V demoed with the Steam Controller

by Jordan Devore

As predicted, my brain can't handle this demonstration of the Steam Controller.

I'm so used to the current twin-stick form factor that imagining what it must feel like to have a mouse and keyboard emulated on a gamepad using dual trackpads is bizarre. But this showcase of the controller comes across as strangely natural since it's in the hands of someone at Valve who's gotten comfortable with the input method.

There are more videos of the controller yet to come, and Valve is specifically asking for suggestions on what next to play. This video covers Portal 2, Civilization V, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, and Papers, Please. I agree with everyone who wants to see a platformer.

theharbinger:

Bombardeo al Palacio de la Moneda, 11 de Septiembre de 1973

"Vile as the atrocities on 9/11 were, one can easily imagine worse. Suppose that al-Qaeda had been supported by an awesome superpower intent on overthrowing the government of the United States. Suppose that the attack had succeeded: al-Qaeda had bombed the White House, killed the president, and installed a vicious military dictatorship, which killed some fifty thousand to one hundred thousand people, brutally tortured seven hundred thousand, set up a major center of terror and subversion that carried out assassinations throughout the world, and helped establish neo-Nazi “National Security States” elsewhere that tortured and murdered with abandon. Suppose further that the dictatorship brought in economic advisers—call them “the Kandahar boys”—who within a few years drove the economy to one of its worst disasters in U.S. history while their proud mentors collected Nobel Prizes and received other accolades. That would have been vastly more horrendous than 9/11.And as everyone in Chile knows, it is not necessary to imagine, because it in fact did happen, right here: on “the first 9/11,” September 11, 1973. The only change above is to per capita equivalents, an appropriate measure. But the first 9/11 did not change history, for good reasons: the events were too normal."

New, Canon-Faithful Star Trek Series Is In Pre-Production

by Soulskill
An anonymous reader writes "Star Trek veterans such as Walter Koenig (Pavel Chekov), Tim Russ (Tuvok), Robert Picardo (the Doctor) and others are busy in pre-production of a professionally produced pilot episode for a suggested new online Star Trek series named Star Trek: Renegades, which will be faithful to the original Star Trek canon. The events of the series are placed a decade after Voyager's return from Delta Quadrant. When the pilot is complete, they'll present it to CBS in the hopes that it'll be picked up. They have also opened an Indiegogo campaign, seeking more funds from Star Trek fans to help make the production even more professional. They've already reached their primary funding goal."

Dragon Age: Inquisition will reintroduce character races

by Dave Tach

Dragon Age: Inquisition, BioWare's upcoming fantasy role-playing game, will let players choose their race, creative director Mike Laidlaw told Game Informer.

The first game in the series, Dragon Age: Origins, allowed players to select among races like humans, dwarves and elves, each of which had their own sub-classes, lore and origin stories. Race choice was absent in the series' second installment, Dragon Age 2, but will return in Dragon Age: Inquisition, based in part on player feedback.

"Races are awesome," Laidlaw said. "I think they're fantastic. So bringing it back was 100 percent based on fan feedback. Certainly some internal desire as well."

Adding races back into the series is an expensive development proposition, given that...

Let’s not beat around the bush here…

OR SHALL WE?!

Why is she cuddling with Tampax at what appears to be a pool that is also the ocean?

I want a tampon commercial where the women are fighting zombies or some ….

And they’re all beat up and bloody and shoving tampons into bullet wounds to stop the bleeding.

And I want one of the ladies to full-on decapitate a zombie with a machete or maybe a scythe.

And then I want her to look directly into the camera with blood running from an open wound on her forehead and say,

“For the fighting spirit.”

^ That commercial would win all of the Oscars.

That commercial would make more sense that all this faffing about through the fields of daisies and cuddling your tampons bs…

What are you talking about?

I sit by the pool/ocean cuddle my tampons all the freaking time.

Who wants to start a tampon company with me just so we can make that commercial?

What would it be called, Tampocalypse? I’d be game if it were called Tampocalypse.

Happy K-Day

by noreply@blogger.com (MovieBob)
Anyone who cares probably already knew this, but today (August 10th, 2013) is K-DAY - the date, in "Pacific Rim's" timeline, when the first Kaiju (Trespasser) appears in San Francisco. I can think of at least one way to mark the occasion (technically, the "event" runs through 8/15 since it takes five days to kill the thing) - though it's kind of sad that there aren't more screens left to go see it on...
