Before & After: A Brightened, Whitened Bathroom

If you’ve seen the movie Helveticayou likely remember the scene in which graphic designer Michael Bierut exasperatedly discusses the rebranding of the world in the modern typeface. “There was a time,” he says fervently, “when it just felt so good to take something that was old, dusty, homemade, and crappy looking and replace it with HELVETICA. It just must have felt like you were scraping the crud off of filthy old things and restoring them to shining beauty… It must have seemed like you had crawled through a dessert with your mouth just caked with filthy dust and somebody just offered you a nice, refreshing, distilled, icy glass of water.” This is pretty much how I feel about this whole “white” trend.

Over the past few years, we’ve seen more and more people scraping away the proverbial dust in their homes and replacing it with the simplest solution possible: white. And while many people of years past might have bemoaned the non-color’s lack of personality or originality, it seems that today, this couldn’t be further from the case. This bathroom, sent to us by graphic designer Cat Grishaver, illustrates just how beautifully white (and erring on the side of simplicity) can transform a previously ragtag, mismatched space. “We wanted the bathroom to feel in keeping with our home’s 107-year-old Craftsman style,” Cat said, “but with a few modern, nature-inspired touches.” To accomplish this, Cat and her husband Dan decided the best course of action was to minimize. With classic touches like subway tiles from Home Depot and butcher block from IKEA, the results are as timeless as they are stylish. Check out the full restoration after the jump! —Max

Opulent Residence Built Around a Central Courtyard in Peru: La Planicie House

Courtsey of Juan Solano

Boasting a total surface of 905 square meters, La Planicie House developed by Oscar GonzalezMoix in La Molina District, Peru is a modern indoor-outdoor interplay of living areas. The brief of the owners requested a building that offered a maximum connectivity with the environment, which determined the existence of a large central courtyard. Moreover, each of the interiors making up this massive U-shaped residence comes with great views of distant hills.

Here is more on the inner structure of the residence: “On one side of the field lies a longitudinal volume that contains the double-height main entrance, kitchen, living room and main circulation. This object acts as a backbone and connect the programs. Three faces define the courtyard; one of her is the backbone, the other two are projecting higher specific volumes. Between the two volumes, the yard articulates the winter living room and summer dining (barbecue / grill)”. How would you comment on the structure and layout of this family home in Peru?

The World’s First Mobile Inflatable Concert Hall ‘Ark Nova’ to Tour Quake-Damaged Japan

by EDW Lynch
Bartice

I find this thing to be terrifying.

Ark Nova inflatable concert hall

Ark Nova is a 500-seat concert hall that can be packed up and transported thanks to its inflatable structure—according to its creators, the Ark Nova is the world’s first mobile inflatable concert hall. It measures 98 feet by 118 feet and features a rounded, organic design by British sculptor Anish Kapoor and Japanese architect Arata Isozaki. The hall was commissioned by the Swiss Lucerne Festival as a way to bring concerts and performances to areas of Japan that were affected by the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. Ark Nova was officially unveiled at the Lucerne Festival Ark Nova 2013 in Matsushima on September 27, 2013. The festival runs through October 13, 2013.

Federal Employees Get Free Vibrators During Government Shutdown

Federal Employees Get Free Vibrators During Government Shutdown Federal employees who've been affected by the government shutdown can have some fun thanks to a company that's shipping 200 vibrators per day to those employees deemed "nonessential," in hopes of giving them something to do while they "have so much time" on their hands. Awesome.

Havana Street Produces 12 Sets of Twins

by Dmitry

“A street in the Cuban capital, Havana, is home to 12 sets of twins, ranging from toddlers to senior citizens. Some say it could be something in the water. Others point to a tree with mystical significance for locals. And maybe it’s just chance.

Scientists say a variety of factors play into twin births, such as race, the mother’s age and diet. Western Africa, from where many Afro-Cubans can trace their ancestry, has significantly elevated rates of twinning. Meanwhile statisticians caution against the human tendency to seek patterns of serendipity in a random world.

“Something could definitely be there, it could be a combination of various factors”, Andrew Gelman, a statistics professor at Columbia University, said via email. “In addition, opportunistic counting can make a small and natural pattern appear larger”. For example focusing on these two blocks without considering other surrounding ones, he added, “puts the spotlight on a small subset”.

While there’s been no scholarly study of the twins on 68-A Street, they nonetheless consider themselves part of a special community. Some look to faith for an explanation. “There are neighbors who are religious. Many say it’s the Siguaraya tree, which people ask for things and is in one of the homes”, Fe Fernandez said. “The people believe in it strongly”. Leafy and embellished with delicate white blossoms, the Siguaraya is considered sacred in the syncretic Afro-Cuban Santeria faith and is associated with a powerful “orisha”, or spirit.

Others, like Mercedes Montero, mother of 21-year-old Xavier and Lorena, chalk it up to the luck of the draw. “It’s a very big coincidence”, Montero said, “one of those strange things in life”. – Andrea Rodriguez via Associated Press

Chris Brown Says He Lost His V-Card At Age 8

by J Harvey

Chris Brown being shielded by ten bodyguards was seen wearing a solid Gold diamond encrusted T-Rex necklace as he left 'Icon' nightclub in Downtown Los Angeles, CA

In an interview with The Guardian, Chris Brown claimed that he first had sex when he was 8. He explained that “it’s different in the country”. What country? Neverland Ranch?

The Difficult Brown explained that he and his cousins watched tons of porn and that made them rarin’ to go. Don’t worry. This cautionary tale from the Virginia Department of Social Services gets even squickier.

“At eight, being able to do it, it kind of preps you for the long run, so you can be a beast at it. You can be the best at it.”

You certainly have the beast part down, Breezy. They start em’ early in WHERE THE FUCK IS EVERYONE’S PARENTS Land. This is another piece of the “Why Is Chris Brown Such A Demented Asshole?” puzzle. Do you think he approaches the gals with lines like “I’m going to shit in your eye, and open the passenger side window with your head. It’s ok, baby. I’ve been doing this since I was 8. You moist already, right?”

8? 8. When I was 8, I was really into Fruit Loops and still had an imaginary friend. I don’t think I was even aware of my penis except for the times when I would wet myself in anticipation of the ice cream truck.

Here’s Chris leaving Icon in LA last month. Yes, that is a solid gold, diamond-encrusted T-Rex around his neck. It stabs me in the soul that I want one.
