Homemade Mosquito Trap

by Jonco
Trey Peden

UM. That is supergross and I totally want to try this now.

Mosquito trapWorks on Gnats too!

Items needed:

1 cup of water
1/4 cup of brown sugar
1 gram of yeast
2-liter plastic bottle

1. Cut the plastic bottle in half.
2. Mix brown sugar with hot water. Let cool. When cold, pour in the bottom half of the bottle.
3. Add the yeast. No need to mix. It creates carbon dioxide, which attracts mosquitoes.
4. Place the funnel part, upside down, into the other half of the bottle, taping them together if desired.
5. Wrap the bottle with something black, leaving the top uncovered, and place it outside in an area away from your normal gathering area. (Mosquitoes are drawn to the color black or white.)

Change the solution every 2 weeks for continuous control.

Thanks Cari

Drink Like Draper: 6 “Mad Men” Cocktails For Tonight’s Season Six Premiere

by Lester Brathwaite

mad-men

Mad Men is back. More importantly Jon Hamm’s scene-stealingly large bulge is back and who wouldn’t want to drink to that? The authors of The Unofficial Mad Men Cookbook, Judy Gelman and Peter Zheutlin, shared a few boozy recipes inspired by and featured in the award-winning series. So tonight, you can drink along to Don’s douchebaggery, Roger’s rambunctiousness and Peggy just plain ole bein’ a boss.

Check out some Mad Men-inspired booze below — all recipes yield one drink.

draper-drinking

Old Fashioned

The first drink ordered on Mad Men, the sip that launched a thousand ships and Don’s drink of choice. He orders it in season 1, episode 1 — “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes” — and Mr. Draper is seen getting all kinds of sloppy to it throughout the show.

1 orange slice
1 maraschino cherry
1 tsp sugar
Few drops of Angostura bitters
A splash of soda water to muddle ingredients
2½ oz rye or bourbon

1. In a mixing glass, muddle orange slice, cherry, sugar, bitters and a little soda water; push around and break up cherry and orange until flavor is released.

2. Add soda water so cherry is wet and sugar is melted. Add rye or bourbon and serve over rocks, if desired.

sterling-martini

Martini

Silver fox Roger Sterling’s signature drink.

½ oz dry vermouth
2½ gin

1. Fill a martini glass with water and large ice cubes (enough to keep it cold while mixing drink).

2. Pour vermouth and gin into a mixing glass and stir.

3. Pour ice and water out of martini glass. Pour martini from mixing glass to martini glass.

peggy-bloody

“21″ Traditional Bloody Mary

The drinking day starts early at Sterling, Cooper et al, and Bloody Mary’s are a staple at the Draper breakfast table or early morning meetings. The roots of the drink lie at New York’s famed 21 Club where this recipe originates.

1½ oz vodka
2 oz tomato juice, chilled
Dash of Worcestershire sauce
Dash of celery sauce
Dash of Tabasco sauce
Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Add ingredients to a shaker filled with ice. Shake well and pour into a chilled cocktail glass.

mad-men-manhattan

Manhattan

Nothing says Manhattan like a Manhattan.

2 oz rye whiskey
½ oz sweet vermouth
2-3 dashes Angostura bitters
Maraschino cherry, for garnish

1. Pour whiskey, vermouth, and bitters into a mixing glass with ice cubes. Stir well.

2. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with the cherry.

betty-draper-drinking

Vodka Gimlet

When Betty and Don were heading down the road to divorce, Betty took the wheel and drunkenly crashed into a handsome stranger. After finding out she’s pregnant with their third child, Betty stops into a bar and orders a gimlet. Continuing her reckless behavior, she then has anonymous sex in the bar’s office. Betty Draper, everyone — mother of the year.

2 oz vodka
1 oz Rose’s Lime Juice

1. Add vodka and Rose’s Lime Juice to a shaker filled with ice.

2. Shake and strain into martini glass or pour over ice.

peggy-pot

Bacardi Rum Frappé

Remember that time Peggy Olson started smoking pot? While brainstorming ideas for Bacardi over the weekend, Peggy and the boys decided to get tropical with some frappés, aka daiquiris. Next thing you know, Peggy’s getting high and living the island life. Coincidence? Doubt it.

1 cup finely crushed ice
Juice of half a lime (½ oz)
1 tsp sugar
1½ oz light Bacardi rum

Place all ingredients in a blender and blend until thoroughly frappéd.

Season six of Mad Men premieres tonight at 9pm/8 c.

STUDY: Support For Gay Marriage Has Increased In Every State By 13.6%

by Lester Brathwaite
gay-marriage-map

State Approval of Marriage in 2012

According to a new report by the Williams Institute, every state has seen increases in support for same-sex marriage over the last eight years.

The report, Public Support for Marriage for Same-sex Couples by State, reveals each state’s current level of public opinion and how it has differed since 2004.

Main findings include:

  • By the end of 2012, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington, and the District of Columbia had support for same-sex marriage at or above 50 percent.
  • Of these 12 states, all currently perform marriages, civil unions, or domestic partnerships for same-sex couples.
  • Alaska, Arizona, Delaware, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, and South Dakota are currently within five percentage points of majority support.
  • In the last eight years, every state has increased in its support for marriage for same-sex couples with an average increase of 13.6 percent.
  • If present public opinion trends continue, another eight states will be above 50 percent support by the end of 2014.

Since 2009, six states – Maine, Maryland, New York, New Hampshire, Vermont and Washington – have passed laws introducing same-sex marriage while five additional states – Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Nevada, and Rhode Island – introduced civil unions or domestic partnerships for same-sex couples.

Despite increased support for same-sex marriage across the country, research revealed a 31% disparity between the lowest level of support found in a state (Louisiana/Arkansas, 31%) and the highest (Washington, D.C., 62%).

Scientists Play "Spot The Bottom"

by Joe
Researchers at the University of Toronto wanted to know (for some reason) if "naive observers" could look at the faces of gay men and determine whether they were tops or bottoms.  From the abstract:
In Study 1, we found that naïve observers were able to discern men's sexual roles from photos of their faces with accuracy that was significantly greater than chance guessing. Moreover, in Study 2, we determined that the relationship between men's perceived and actual sexual roles was mediated by perceived masculinity. Together, these results suggest that people rely on perceptions of characteristics relevant to stereotypical male-female gender roles and heterosexual relationships to accurately infer sexual roles in same-sex relationships. Thus, same-sex relationships and sexual behavior may be perceptually framed, understood, and possibly structured in ways similar to stereotypes about opposite-sex relationships, suggesting that people may rely on these inferences to form accurate perceptions.
Or maybe some of the more masculine men in the study were not willing to identify themselves publicly as bottoms. Not even for science.

Life Hack of the Day: Turn an IKEA Stool into a Kid's Bike

Life Hack of the Day: Turn an IKEA Stool into a Kid's Bike

IKEA instructions can be difficult enough to follow as is, but what happens if you didn't follow them at all and made something else instead? Samuel Bernier and Andreas Bhend spent two days reverse-engineering the Swedish furniture company's FROSTA stool into a kid-sized bike. According to the duo, the handlebars feel "a bit stiff" but the wheels "roll like a dream." Wanna make your own? Check out Bhend's step-by-step modification instruction on Instructables!

Archdiocese Of San Francisco Responds To Flap About Anti-Gay Facebook Avatar

by Joe
Trey Peden

I love how people assume that the size of the internet correlates to organization of the internets. Silly gooses!

During last month's Supreme Court hearings on Prop 8 and DOMA, the Archdiocese of San Francisco changed their Facebook avatar to a division symbol with a scriptural reference beneath.   The avatar was later deleted along with hundreds of furious comments.  Yesterday the Archdiocese finally responded to media inquiries about the incident. Via San Francisco's KQED:
Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone has been outspoken in his opposition to same-sex marriage. So the archdiocese social media expert, Edison Tapalla, re-posted a couple of symbols playing on the "+" symbol. Those went over without huge criticism. But when he tried "÷," on March 26 he ignited a firestorm. Same-sex advocates posted about 320 comments in a tone so harsh that Tapalla took down the post a couple of days later. [snip] So what was all this meant to communicate? Tapalla said it was a comment on the sharp divisions around the issue of same-sex marriage. "It was more commenting on how people are separated," he said. "I wish that people could talk. I think we live in a world where mere disagreement is taken as hate. When you have such strong feelings on both sides, it's hard to come together and have a conversation."
A spokesman for the Archdiocese added: "We were slammed with some very ugly messages. It was obviously an organized attack. It's probably the same group that's been attacking us. They are very anti-Catholic and very bigoted." The Human Rights Campaign denies having responded to the incident. I wonder who could have sent all those angry commenters? (Tipped by JMG reader Don)
