On A Wednesday
On A Wednesday is a project by my studiomates Dave Dawson and Bekka Palmer. The idea behind the site is charmingly simple: Bekka and Dave ask people what they’re doing. On Wednesdays. The results are beautiful and varied portraits of random New Yorkers, telling us about their day. Beautiful.
This Review of Pepsi-Flavored Cheetos Is Terrifying
What would Pepsi-flavored Cheetos taste like? Thanks to this amazing food review from the site TheImpulsiveBuy.com, you no longer have to imagine. Unfortunately (actually, make that fortunately), the novelty snack is currently only being sold in Japan, and Frito Lay—the mad scientists behind the sinister concoction—has no plans on bringing them to the United States. The review opens with several thought provoking lines, notably this quote from Jurassic Park’s Dr. Ian Malcolm, “Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could that they didn’t stop to think if they should.” Frito Lay has gone too far this time …

The Trailer for Ben Stiller’s ‘The Secret Life of Walter Mitty’ Is Incredible
Mikkele.bringardTHIS LOOKS AWESOME!
Ben Stiller may be best known for his roles in commercial comedies like Meet the Parents and There’s Something about Mary, but the trailer for his new film will make you see the actor in a different light. Stiller directed and stars in this adaptation of the James Thurber short story The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, and if the trailer is any indication, the visuals alone will be pretty amazing …
Man Tries to Sneak Pet Turtle on Plane by Disguising It as a Hamburger
Some days, you write the headlines. Other days, the headlines write themselves. This is a case of the latter, in which a Chinese man named Li tried to smuggle his beloved turtle through airport security by putting it in a hamburger container between two buns and a slice of cheese. Oh, my. Where to even begin with this one. Li is a hero, and the fact that he did not succeed does not diminish his accomplishment (airport security noticed a few "odd protrusions" on his burger which reportedly led Li to insist, "There's no turtle in there, just a hamburger!" So, again, he's a hero.) But you also have to hand it to this crack airport security team who saw through this airtight scheme. So, really, everyone's a hero here. Thank-you, airport. Thank-you, Li. Thank-you, Hamburger Turtle ...
Ryan Gosling and Zac Efron to Star in the New ‘Star Wars’?
According to a report in the Latino Review—an outlet that has broken some pretty significant casting news in the past, including being the first one to break the news that Harrison Ford would be appearing in the new films—young Hollywood stars Ryan Gosling and Zac Efron are both in talks to have major roles in J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: Episode VII.
The new film is said to take place 30 years after Return of the Jedi, and according to early rumors, Gosling is in talks to play the son of Luke Skywalker, and filmmakers may be interested in Efron for the role of Han Solo’s son. Star Wars was mysteriously absent from this year’s Comic-Con, and there’s some speculation that Disney (who now owns the Star Wars franchise) is saving any major casting revelations for its own D23 Expo in August. Now, Gosling's reps have denied the meetings, but that's standard practice. Interestingly, both Gosling and Efron have ties to Disney: Efron rose to fame following the Disney Channel’s High School Musical craze, and Gosling is a former Mouseketeer. Patton Oswalt was unavailable for comment …
Kristen Bell, Henry Winkler Coming to ‘Parks and Recreation’
There will be a few new faces in Pawnee when season six of Parks and Recreation returns to NBC this fall. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kristen Bell will guest star as a snobby councilwoman from the rival town of Eagleton, and Henry Winkler (he’s very good) will be making an appearance as the father of party animal Jean-Ralphio …
Beatbox Brilliance: Tom Thum at TEDxSydney
Mikkele.bringardthe colossal description is absolutely right. i was yelling at my computer at parts. i just don't even understand how this is humanly possible.
At about two minutes in to this ten minute performance by beat boxer Tom Thum my jaw was already hanging open, by about six minutes I had nearly thrown my computer off my lap. The Guardian was absolutely correct when it stated Thum “appears to have swallowed an entire orchestra and several backing singers”. The performance was shot at TEDxSydney last May in the famous Sydney Opera House and was just released online yesterday. Excuse me while I step outside to show this to random people on the street.
97-Year-Old Woman Sends Robber Packing, Is a Rock Star
Marge Wolf is the 97-year-old owner of Wolf's Grocery Store in Marshfield, Wisc., and she's been running it for 54 years. She's also a total rock star, because when a masked, knife-wielding robber came into her store and demanded money, she straight up told him to take a hike. He told her to walk to the back of the store, and she said "No, I'm not walking to the back of the store. I'm standing right here and I'm staying here." When he told her to open the cash register, she said "I'm not opening the cash register." She even told the armed(!) robber to take his mask off so she could see his face, because, as we established, she is a rock star.
And, oh man, you haven't even heard the best part. Once the robber found out that he was in way over his head, he started to leave empty handed, but not before Marge offered to let him have a handful of Tootsie Rolls. That's right. Marge will beat you at your own game, and then give you some candy so you have something to take solace in while you're weeping in humiliation at the fact that sweet old lady just beat you. But of course, this isn't just any sweet old lady. This is Marge Wolf: rock star ...
'Arrested Development' Will ‘Definitely’ Return
Arrested Development creator Mitch Hurwitz recently attended the Just for Laughs comedy festival in Canada, and used the forum to address a few questions about the future of his beloved show. When asked if Netflix subscribers would be seeing more of the Bluth family any time soon, Hurwitz replied, “Definitely.” And this time around, he'll reunite the entire cast—not put them in separate episodes. Hurwitz, who was with Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos, continued, “I don’t want to get into a whole negotiation right now, but I’ve got a family to feed. I kinda go back and forth between [a movie] and a series. But here’s the most important thing, whatever we do, I want to get the cast all together and not do another anthology thing. And that’s why I keep thinking about kicking off with a special or a three-part show and then going into a series” …
Rob Lowe Is Literally in Talks to Develop His Own NBC Show
If you were one of the many Parks & Recreation fans heartbroken over the news that Rob Lowe and Rashida Jones would be leaving the show midway through season 6, we’ve got some good news. According to Deadline, the actor is currently in talks with NBC to develop a new series. Though there’s no details about the new show’s concept, and certainly no indication that it will be in anyway related to his beloved character on Parks & Rec, we're going to do what Chris Traeger has always taught us—be insanely optimistic to the point of delusion …
Awesome Picture of Marine Helping Boy During a 5K Race Goes Viral
Thanks to the courage of one little kid and a 19-year-old Marine, this inspiring picture has gone viral. Here’s the story: During a recent 5K run in Michigan, a 5-year-old boy become separated from the runners he started with. When he saw Lance Cpl. Kerr, who was part of a group of Marines also running the race separately wearing boots and equipment, the little guy asked him, “Sir? Will you please run with me?” At the finish line, fearing that their fellow Marine had become injured or overheated after not crossing the line in his normal time, other soldiers began to make their way back down the course, when they saw Kerr and this boy coming across the final turn. According to a Facebook post following the race, “Lance Cpl. Kerr urged him on when the boy wanted to give up and ensured that the boy saw the course to completion where he was reunited with his party.” Kerr later tweeted that the boy’s parents gave him a $100 restaurant gift card. If you ask us, they’re both heroes …
Amy Poehler and Bill Hader to Voice Pixar’s Trippy New Movie
Pixar is working on a Being John Malkovich-like movie, that we’ll be honest, kind of sounds bonkers. Inside Outside takes place inside the mind of an 11-year-old girl after her family embarks on an emotionally turbulent move across the country. Instead of typical Pixar-fare, like talking animals or anthropomorphic toys, the film’s characters are actually emotion’s inside the little girl’s brain. Disgust (Mindy Kaling), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black), Sadness (Phyllis Smith from The Office) and Joy (Amy Poehler) all attempt to win control over the mind’s central “headquarters.” Huh …
Google's Definition of 'Literally' Is Literally the Opposite of 'Literally'
Mikkele.bringardI guess we can't punch TJ anymore?
Linguists fought hard, but there is no resisting the tide of ages. There's no telling when it happened, but Google's definition of "literally" now literally includes the opposite of "literally." Let the angels weep ...
New iPhone to Be Announced on Sept. 10
Mikkele.bringardi mostly laughed at the candy crush comment.
According to the site AllThingsD, Apple will unveil the new iPhone on Sept. 10. Tech-watchers believe that along with demoing some new features (like a fingerprint sensor and menu overhaul), as well as the new iOS, Apple will also showcase a low-cost version of the iPhone 5. The new phones will also come equipped with a Candy Crush-blocker, allowing users to have access to the addictive app preemptively blocked so that precious, fleeting hours of their lives are no longer wasted in an ultimately pointless effort to try to align pieces of colorful candy …
Artist Repaints Signs for the Homeless and Gives Them a Voice to Tell Their Stories
Kenji Nakayama is a professional artist living in Boston, where he provides hand-painted logos and signs for companies in the area. But a few years ago, he decided to use his talent to serve more than just local businesses—he wanted to help Boston’s homeless community. Nakayama began creating high-quality, hand-painted signs that could replace old, cardboard signs used by members of the homeless community that were looking for help. After his work became noticed in the local New England media, he decided to try to figure out other ways to help the homeless. Now, after he paints them a new sign, he interviews them and posts their stories on a blog. Nakayama told Boston Magazine, “The signs are more about telling people why they are homeless. The bios [on the blog] are more about giving a name and a face to the homeless. Each one is a human being, and their needs are different.” If you have a moment today, reading some of the entries on the Homeless Signs blog is pretty moving …
Taco Bell’s Waffle Taco Coming to 100 Stores Across the Country
Following the wildly successful release of tacos made from Doritos, Taco Bell is continuing its mission to usher in the coming apocalypse by rolling out a “Waffle Taco” across America. The company says that the breakfast concoction was a bestseller at test store locations in Southern California, and starting today, customers at about 100 stores across the country will be able to start their morning off with an extremely questionable decision. The company said that if the roll-out is as successful as they are anticipating, the Waffle Taco could be a menu-item staple by 2014, just as the end of days begin …
Burglars Return Computers After Realizing They Stole from a Non-Profit
A group of burglars, who broke into an office outside of Los Angeles and stole several computers, evidently had a change of heart when they realized they had just stolen from a non-profit organization that helps victims of sexual violence. The day after the theft, a box containing all of the stolen goods along with a note was found outside of the office of the San Bernardino County Sexual Assault Services. The confession read: "We had no idea what we were taking. Here your stuff back we hope that you guys can continue to make a difference in peoples live. God bless" …
Even without Jason Segel, ‘Muppets Most Wanted’ Looks Pretty Great
Even though Jason Segel isn’t returning for the Muppets movie sequel, the film still features a pretty impressive cast. Ricky Gervais, Ty Burrell and Tina Fey all star Muppets Most Wanted, which hits theaters in March …
Pixar Is Rewriting the Ending to 'Finding Dory' Because of SeaWorld Documentary 'Blackfish'
The documentary Blackfish caused quite a stir when it debuted at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and now that it’s in wide release, SeaWorld has begun to engage in a high-profile PR war with the filmmakers. The movie exposes the toll that life in captivity takes on orcas, and focuses on Tilikum, the whale that killed its trainer during a performance at the Orlando theme park. The backlash from the documentary has been so substantial, that there are now reports that Pixar is rewriting the end to its upcoming Finding Nemo sequel. [Warning: Some possible spoilers lay ahead.] A source from the animation studio told The New York Times that during a part of Finding Dory when some of the fish and their friends are taken to an aquatic center, the script will be changed so it will be clear that they have the option to leave. The implication is, that after seeing the public response to Blackfish—and the possible mistreatment of killer whales at SeaWorld—Pixar filmmakers weren’t sure if the whole human/wild-animal-friendship-thing was going to sit too well with audiences. SeaWorld has called the documentary “shamefully dishonest, deliberately misleading, and scientifically inaccurate” …
A Mother & Daughter Lookalike Photo Project by Carra Sykes
Mother + Daughter is an ongoing portrait project by artist Carra Sykes who dresses and poses identically to her mother in various photographs. Sykes was looking for a way to lift her spirits while struggling with a long job hunt and was struck by her mom’s penchant for occasionally raiding her Goodwill donation bags to wear her old clothes. While the photos are not meant to be perfectly identical in composition or form, Sykes says the project has become an interesting study of their relationship and physical traits. You can follow the series over on Flickr. For similar projects check out the work of Irina Werning. (via My Modern Met, DesignTAXI)

An Artist is Making a Map of Manhattan Using Only Handwritten Directions From Strangers
Think about it, when was the last time you asked for directions? Or even used a paper map? Armed with smart phones and fancy GPS apps that map the route to your destination in milliseconds, asking a random person for directions is an increasingly rare occurrence. New York conceptual artist Nobutaka Aozaki is exploring the act of asking for directions in his ongoing art piece, Here to There, by gathering a collection of impromptu hand-drawn maps he obtains from complete strangers. Dressed as a tourist in a souvenir baseball cap and carrying a Century 21 shopping bag, the artist hits the streets around Manhattan and approaches random pedestrians to inquire about directions through the current part of the map he’s working on.
One of the most common scenarios when asking strangers for directions is their habit of pulling out a smart phone to start typing in an address, after which he insists on leaving with a drawn map on whatever written surface is available: torn sheets of notebook paper, napkins, or even paper plates. Aozaki tells Spoon & Tamago that his goal is not to make a complete map, but to instead document his daily routine and his myriad interactions with people, sort of like a mapped diary. Second Skins: Fashionably Dressed Animals Photographed by Miguel Vallinas
When first encountering this body of photographs Madrid-based advertising and industrial photographer Miguel Vallinas it’s easy to view it as a familiar “animals dressed as people” project. But as you look closer you realize it’s quite a bit more than that. Aside from the solid retouching, lighting and overall execution, Vallinas took this anthropomorphic project a bit further and imagined what the fully-realized wardrobe of each animal might look like if it were wearing human clothes.
Titled Segundas Pieles (Second Skins), the ongoing series includes some 50+ animals whose personalities seem to be perfectly amplified by their pitch-perfect attire, making the portaits just a bit more human than animal. I’m pretty sure the hipster bird in the cardigan works at a coffee shop by my house. The work is a sister project to another series called simply Pieles where the photographer portrays himself in a wide range of professions. (via lustik)
Nobody Cares That Today Is 'Middle Child Day,' Which Seems Appropriate
There has been no rush of presidential speeches or parades to celebrate today, Middle Child's Day, and maybe that's the way it's supposed to be. According to Bruce Hopman, founder and only member (of course) of the International Middle Child Union, "Our whole lives, middle children crave attention, but we're always ignored, so it's typical that someone would give us a holiday just so they could ignore it." So, as part of our RELEVANT salute to middle children, here's a list of famous middle children. Enjoy ...
Family Gets Lost at Sea Trying to Follow God
Hannah Gastonguay, a 26-year-old mother of two, was rescued along with her husband after being lost at sea for weeks. Evidently, they set sail from San Diego because they were tired of "abortion, homosexuality, in the state-controlled church," and thought their Christian faith would fare better elsewhere. So Hannah's husband “decided to take a leap of faith and see where God led us.” They had every intention of sailing to Kiribati, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, because "we didn’t want to go anywhere big.”
The trouble is, of course, the ocean is big, and the Gastonguay family found themselves in a lot of trouble after a series of squalls got them hopelessly off course. Running low on food, they were finally rescued by a Venezuelan fishing vessel (the Captain of which allegedly told them, "Do you know where you're at? You're in the middle of nowhere,)" and they're being sent back to the States. For now, at least, their attempt to see where God would lead them has sent them back to where they started from ...
The Earth’s Seasonal “Heartbeat” as Seen from Space
We all know that as the seasons change on Earth, temperatures rise and fall, plants grow or die, ice forms or melts away. Perhaps nobody is more aware of this than NASA’s Visible Earth team who provide a vast catalog of images of our home planet as seen from space. Last month designer, cartographer, and dataviz expert John Nelson download a sequence of twelve cloud-free satellite imagery mosaics of Earth, one from each month, and then created a number of vivid animated gifs showing the seasonal changes in vegetation and land ice around the world.
Despite having encountered numerous seasonal timelapse videos shot here on Earth, this is the first time I’ve ever seen anything like this visualized on such a large scale from space. It really looks like a heartbeat or the action of breathing. Read more over on Nelson’s blog, or see a much larger version of the gif here. (via Co.Design)
