The house I grew up in is for sale. My mom sold the house ~17 years ago, after my dad left, and it’s weird seeing how the family who’s lived there since has it decorated.

This was my bedroom until I was 18. When it was my room the walls were painted an offensively fluorescent green and decorated with reflective orange stickers, which made the walls almost impossible to look at for more than 5 seconds at a time. It physically hurt people’s eyes, which I found hilarious.

The lower window on the left opens up onto the roof of the porch and I would go out there and smoke when I got home late, wired and sad and lonely about summer nights.

Behind the dresser is where I punched a hole in the wall for some reason, probably because my parents told me I was on the phone with my girlfriend too long or something. I never told them, I just hung a flyer up over it and forgot about it.

Years later, after I’d moved out, my mom was going through a divorce and doing everything herself to get this house cleared out and sold, and it was her last day to get out and she took the flyer off the wall and saw the hole. She had so much to do, every aspect of her life was overwhelming and she was battling one of the worst depressions of her life, and now on top of everything else she had to find a contractor who could come in and fix it ASAP. Like one more thing on top of the impossibly heavy load she was already carrying. All I remember about her call that morning was her voice, how disappointed and defeated she was. I don’t know if it was the maddest she ever was at me, but it was close (I was terrible.).

After high school, when my friend Tony was murdered, I made a conscious decision to be a better person. To be completely different from who I had been my entire life. To be guided by love and curiosity instead of by hate and cynicism. And I want to say that it worked. But it’s been decades and I keep re-learning that just because something’s in the past doesn’t mean it stays there.

The last time I incubated of future generation of my family, my OB’s office — a place you cumulatively spend a spectacular amount of time over the course of 40 weeks — was diagonally across the street from the Upper West Side Shake Shack, and I only ate there once. I understand if this means we can no longer be friends; I am personally embarrassed to know this about me too. Where were my priorities? I have spent years mourning this missed opportunity to not only eat a weekly Shackburger but to have made better use of my last weeks of kid-free leisurely lunches for years to come. The reason is even less sympathetic: I didn’t like hamburgers, or so I thought. They were so thick, so dauntingly large and one-note, so soft and damp inside, I couldn’t for the life of me imagine what made them popular.

A team of builders from Singapore known as Titans Creations constructed this massive and intricate model of the Millennium Falcon with focus on the ship’s interior design.
