US broadband providers have been told they must prove their claims of offering “super-fast” connections. Officials believe technical disputes between companies may mean paying extra for fast speeds could be pointless.

The demand comes from Tim Wu, who was recently appointed the senior enforcement counsel for the New York state Attorney General. It’s hardly a surprise Wu’s going after the broadband companies as he’s a long-time advocate of an open Internet and is credited with coining the phrase “net neutrality.”

Bloomberg reports Wu has written to Verizon, Time Warner and Cablevision warning that his office may launch a formal investigation into their premium broadband services, marketed under terms such as “Ultimate” and “Optimum.”

Unlike many parts of the US, New York does have competition for cable-based broadband services. However, Wu believes the supposedly faster offerings may not live up to their potential because of slowdowns caused by “interconnection disputes” which involve the way data travels through wires and equipment of multiple companies to and from customers.

The threatened probe appears not to be based around who bears responsibility for any slowdowns, but rather the effect it has on customers who’ve paid for a premium service. Wu notes in the letter that the actual speeds people get “may deviate far enough from the speeds advertised to render the advertising deceptive.”

Wu has asked the providers to hand over documents covering the actual performance of the services, the various interconnection agreements, and the training given to employees about how they should market the services to customers. All three companies told Bloomberg they will cooperate with the Attorney General.

Detroit: Become Human – The Tale of an Android with Human Emotions [Game Trailer]

by Geeks are Sexy

Unfortunately, there’s no release date yet, but Detroit is an upcoming game from the makers of Heavy Rain about an android with human emotions. The trailer looks amazing, and If the game respects the exact same “spirit,” this should be a pretty fantastic title.

Really, you just can’t hate him. It’s impossible.

Matter & Antimatter Not So Different

by JLister

rhic

Researchers in New York have found antimatter holds together in much the same way as matter. That finding rules out one possible explanation for why antimatter is so rare.

Antimatter was already known to be almost exactly the same as matter, the main differences being that its components (antiparticles) have an opposing charge and quantum spin. The theory of the Big Bang means that in the initial moments of the universe, matter and antimatter should have been created in equal quantities.

Today virtually everything that can be observed from Earth is made of matter and why there’s no longer a symmetry between the two is unclear. The simplest explanation is that the proportions are still the same across the universe as a whole and there are places where almost everything is antimatter.

That doesn’t seem to hold up however: if that were the case, the boundaries between matter-dominated and anti-matter dominated areas should be producing collisions which result in powerful gamma rays that we should be able to detect.

Another possibility is that there’s some significant difference between matter and antimatter that’s caused the imbalance.

Researchers at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider in New York have been producing and examining small quantities of antimatter. In particular they’ve been looking at antiprotons, the antimatter equivalent of a proton. They were able to isolate the relationships between pairs of protons from the effects of other particles such as antineutrons.

It turns out that not only do pairs of antiprotons attract one another with a strong enough force to overcome any other repellent forces (in the same way that protons bind together in matter), but the force is exactly as strong as the proton equivalent. In other words, as far as holding together goes, protons and antiprotons are symmetrical.

FCC fines Cox for falling for Lizard Squad scam, exposing customer data

by Sean Gallagher

"Hello, this is EvilJordie from IT. Please give me your password."

What's the cost of giving up customers' information because of weak information security practices? For Cox Communications, the answer is a half-million dollar fine and having the Federal Communications Commission watching its every information security move for the next seven years. The FCC's Enforcement Bureau and cable and broadband Internet provider Cox Communications have reached a settlement over an August 2014 data breach involving a member of the Lizard Squad hacking group. The FCC announced the settlement on Thursday.

The hacker, who goes by the nom de guerre "EvilJordie," used one of the oldest social engineering tricks in the book to gain access to Cox's internal data: he convinced a Cox customer service representative and a Cox contractor over the phone that he was a system administrator in Cox's IT department and sent them a "phishing" link to a malicious website that mimicked a corporate intranet site, where they entered their login credentials
