Castlevania: Meat Packing Hard pressed to come up with a better explanation for why there are pork chops or turkeys, a.k.a. wall turkeys, hidden in the various walls throughout the Castlevania series. You know, besides it is just a video game, because that is the lazy way out.

Leeroy “The Legend” Jenkins: The Unsung Hero of the MMORPG

by Remy Carreiro

VPSh9ml

We all remember Leroy Jenkins’ heroic, stupid, suicidal charge. And as much as some may say it has been proven fake and so on, it set the tone for “Let’s Play” videos as it was the first one of its kind many of us watched.

This piece on Imgur stands as a sort of proverbial statue for the man, the legend:

The video was released by a World of Warcraft player guild, featuring a group of players discussing a detailed battle strategy for their next encounter while Leeroy is away from his computer, preparing a meal. This risky plan is needed specifically to help Leeroy, yet it is ruined when Leeroy returns and, ignorant of the strategy, immediately charges headlong into battle shouting his own name in a stylized battle cry. His companions rush to help, but Leeroy’s actions ruin the meticulous plan, and all of the group members are massacred. [Source]

Blizzard To Permanently Ban Overwatch Cheaters

by JLister

overwatch

Blizzard has announced a zero tolerance policy for cheaters on its forthcoming team shooter game Overwatch.

The company says there’ll be a permanent ban for anyone “found to be cheating—or using hacks, bots, or third-party software that provides any sort of unfair advantage.” There’s no word of any refund for a player banned in this way.

The game will include a direct cheater reporting tool in its menu system. There’s also a dedicated email address (hacks@blizzard.com) for reporting cheaters.

Blizzard does note it won’t rely solely on in-game video recordings to decide if somebody is cheating. It points out that some recordings don’t look exactly as the “real” on-screen image when an incident happened, so this could change the apparent aiming ability of the accused player.

It also notes that some players are simply so good that their performance appears “unnatural (if not physically impossible)” even though they aren’t cheating. With this in mind, Blizzard says players should only use the reporting system and shouldn’t make any public accusations.

Amazingly Clever Magnets and Marbles Rube Goldberg Style Machine [Video]

by Geeks are Sexy

From Kaplamino:

In this project, I use those little magnets that can be used to make cubes and others geometric figures, I think the name is “Neocube“.

It’s really impressive how many tricks you can do with that, at the beginning I didn’t think that I could make a whole project based on those magnets, but finally, it was pretty easy and I think there is still lots of cool tricks to discover !

The Greatest Skyrim Picture Ever Taken

by Remy Carreiro

skyrim

That ironic moment when someone gets eaten by a dragon whilst warning you about the dangers of dragons.

The beautiful thing about Skyrim jokes, pics and memes is, there is always at least ONE person you know playing the game, no matter how old it is at this point. Why? Because it is huge and so fully realized, one can easily lose 200 hours in that world. But, that said, it is not without its flaws. Noticeably, some of the AI is not the sharpest tacks around. This pic standing as a glaring example of that. I realize it has made the rounds on the internet before, but it is too golden not to share.

Guys, um, behind you?

Stone Farking Wheaton Woot Stout Is Still The Geekiest Beer on the Planet!

by Geeks are Sexy

woot

An annual release three times running, Stone Farking Wheaton Woot Stout is “a three person collaboration” beer with Stone Brewing founder Greg Koch, epic nerd hero Wil Wheaton and Drew Curtis (creator of Fark.com.) The origins of this beer originally trace back to 2005 when Stone Brewing discovered aforementioned Wil Wheaton was the 10,000th person to sign up for Stone’s e-mail newsletter. As a big fan of beer and Stone brewing, this helped forge a friendly relationship between Wil and founder Greg Koch. You see, Wil has been an avid home brewer and beer enthusiast for years so it’s only natural that this relationship developed over time and eventually lead to a collaboration beer for us geeks to enjoy. Check out more about the origin of Stone Farking Woot Stout in the video below for a quick introduction to the beer.

What’s particularly interesting about this beer is how it’s evolved over time and features a different label artist each year from the world of comics and online artistry. The first rendition had a limited release featuring art by Joel Watson of HijiNKS Ensue, the second release featured art by Watchman artist Dave Gibbons and finally last year’s 3.0 version was drawn by renowned cover artist Dave “The Reverend” Johnson who drew the bottle art in exchange for a Hero Initiative donation from Stone Brewing. Hero Initiative provides retirement support for Golden Age comic artists, many of whom worked for pennies and retained little or no ownership rights to anything they created, nor have any sort of company pension.

This is a beer that embraces the past, the present and the future of all geeks alike with a label that features drawings of each collaborator in comic form. As you can see in the title picture, this Stone Farking Wheaton Woot Stout 3.0 beer pours an incredibly dark brown color with 3 fingers of tan colored foam and no visible bubbles. It has an aroma of tobacco, oak, vanilla on the top of the nose with a backbone of molasses, espresso and dark chocolate boozy liquor that treats to olfactory senses. The tastes are very similar, featuring tobacco and dark chocolate up front, booze, shoe leather and pecans in the middle, and dark coffee, oak, bourbon, vanilla on the finish with a blast of molasses on the aftertaste.

Known commonly as Woot Stout, this is a complicated beer that creates an intense storyline of flavors, introducing the intricacies of each of its characters at first, mixing them up in the middle while leading up to an exciting and enormously satisfying finish, much like a good story should (but it’s a beer!). They truly set out to create something “weird, amazing and unique” to each of the creators, which is exactly how Wil introduced it in the video and I think they largely succeeded. Let’s hope we see Woot Stout 4.0 in the late Spring as usual and be sure to pick up a bottle or two if you see it. Just remember it’s about a 12% alcohol by volume beer, so maybe share it with someone and rejoice in your geekdom together.

Cassie and Lewis Byrom recently got married at the Manchester town hall, and while many would have been perfectly happy to celebrate a traditional wedding, the couple decided to bring the world of Harry Potter inside this one in a lifetime occasion. I’ve often posted pictures of geeky weddings on Geeks are Sexy, but I have to say that these are my favorites so far, and I’ve seen a lot in the past 10 years! Kudos to Kelly Clarke from Kelly Clarke Photography (Official Site | Facebook) for her amazing work!

Oh, and one last thing before showing you the photos, if you like the paper bouquets or wands displayed below, they’ve all been made by the bride, who now has a business in making those professionally!

10-Year-Old Claims $10,000 Instagram Bug Bounty

by JLister

instagram

A 10-year-old has tipped off Facebook about a flaw that made it possible to delete any comment on Instagram. The Finnish boy has earned a $10,000 bounty despite not officially being old enough to have an Instagram account.

While Facebook hasn’t revealed the full details of the  flaw, it has said it was in a private API which had been set up in a way that didn’t properly verify that a user deleting a comment was indeed the one who originally posted it.

The boy, named only as Jani, told local media that he would have been able to delete comments from anyone, “even Justin Bieber.” If that was the case, Jani appears to have been a smart and responsible security researcher by not testing his theory in this way. Instead he proved the flaw by deleting a comment made by Facebook on a test account.

Jani says he’s found several other bugs on websites but this is the first time he’s claimed a cash reward. While his age means the bounty will actually be paid to his parents, he’s already put a football, a new bicycle and computers for both he and his brother on his spending list.

According to Facebook, this beats the record for the youngest ever person to report a bug and earn a reward that was previously held by a 13-year-old. Facebook made the payment this time despite the fact that Jani technically breached the bug bounty program’s rule that researchers must follow its terms of service, including being old enough to use its sites and services.

Report: Google is building a hardware division led by former Motorola president

by Ron Amadeo

Enlarge / Our Alphabet org chart. Welcome the new hardware division. (credit: Ron Amadeo)

Google is building a hardware division. That's according to a report from Re/code, which says that Google is forming a new division with former Motorola President Rick Osterloh at the helm.

Motorola was the old "Google hardware division" that Google decided it didn't want. Osterloh originally joined Google via the company's Motorola purchase in 2011 and was named CEO of Motorola after Dennis Woodside left. Google sold Motorola to Lenovo in 2014, and Osterloh left Motorola last month after some Lenovo "reorganization" at Motorola. Google has now snapped him up. Osterloh becomes a senior vice president at Google, which puts the hardware group on equal footing with Android, Ads, Search, and YouTube.

According to the report, the Google Hardware Division will absorb most of the hardware projects inside Google. There's the good stuff from the Chrome/Android division like Nexus devices, Chromecasts, and Chromebooks, along with Google and Alphabet's struggling hardware projects that haven't had much of a home—OnHub, ATAP (the Advanced Technology and Projects group), and Google Glass. OnHub was born in Alphabet's "Access" division that also houses Google Fiber. OnHub is a router that promises to someday become a smart home device, but so far it hasn't materialized. ATAP has yet to ship an actual piece of hardware and recently had its leader—former DARPA head Regina Dugan—leave for Facebook. Google Glass failed rather spectacularly in the public and later become a forgotten-about group under Tony Fadell's leadership, but not part of Nest. Re/code notes that there's also apparently a new "living room" group in the hardware division.

Can SpaceX really land on Mars? Absolutely, says an engineer who would know

by Eric Berger

The first stage of the Falcon 9 rocket begins its reentry burn at an altitude of 70km. (credit: NASA)

In September, 2014, a Falcon 9 rocket blasted off from Florida carrying a Dragon spacecraft bound for the International Space Station. The capsule carried some notable cargo, including the first 3D printer to be tested in space as well as 20 mousetronauts to study muscle loss. Yet the most far-reaching part of that mission came after the Falcon 9 deployed its upper stage and began falling back to Earth.

As it descended into the upper levels of Earth's atmosphere, the rocket's engines fired for its "reentry burn." A few minutes later, the first stage splashed down in the Atlantic Ocean, completing one of the last flights before SpaceX began trying to land its rocket on an autonomous drone ship. But even as SpaceX was testing technology needed for terrestrial landings of its reusable Falcon 9 rocket, it was also taking some of its first steps toward landing on Mars.

That's because during that launch—and about 10 others since late 2013—SpaceX has quietly been conducting the first flight tests of a technology known as supersonic retro-propulsion—in Mars-like conditions. It did so by firing the Falcon 9's engines at an altitude of 70km down through 40km, which just happens to be where the Earth's thin upper atmosphere can act as a stand-in for the tenuous Martian atmosphere. Therefore, as the Falcon thundered toward Earth through the atmosphere at supersonic speeds and its engines fired in the opposite direction, the company might as well have been trying to land on Mars.

CEO tests “crazy” genetic therapy on herself, claims it added 20 years of life

by Beth Mole
Talynebear

what....

Elizabeth Parrish (credit: YouTube)

Elizabeth Parrish, CEO of the biotech company BioViva, claims that her body's cells are 20 years younger after testing her company’s age-reversing gene therapy on herself.

The 45-year-old Seattle-area woman, who has no scientific or medical training, underwent the experimental treatment last September in an undisclosed clinic in Colombia. The unorthodox, overseas trial, which was designed to skirt US federal regulations, prompted the resignation of one of the company’s scientific advisors. George Martin, of the University of Washington, quit after telling MIT Technology Review, "This is a big problem. I am very upset by what is happening. I would urge lots of preclinical studies.”

Though details of the fast-tracked trial are unpublished, Parrish says it involved intravenous infusions of an engineered virus. That infectious germ carried the genetic blueprints for an enzyme called telomerase, which is found in humans. When spread to the body’s cells, the enzyme generally extends the length of DNA caps on the ends of chromosomes, which naturally wear down with cellular aging. In a 2012 mouse study, Spanish researchers found that similar treatment could extend the lifespan of the rodents by as much as 20 percent.
