Montana-born, New York-based photographer Suzanne Saroff combines commonplace objects with different tools, techniques and colours to create alternative avenues of perception and expression. As she shared with us:

“Taking shape via shadows or fragmentations, my subjects often become more than the singular and expected version of themselves. By utilizing clear forms like cylinders and glasses of water, a watermelon can be multiplied, stretched and flipped as it dances and contorts within the walls of overlapping glass.”

A selection of work by New York-born, Ohio-based artist Robert Roth. Inspired by his hometown of Cold Spring Harbor and the boundless waterways of Long Island, Roth’s paintings develops a sense of mood and atmosphere from the energy of nature and experience of nature. As he explains:

“Within my paintings, I try to achieve that sense of vastness as the reflective light travels throughout the low horizon and across the waterways, lighting up the ground. My paintings are really abstract studies of skies and the landscape just happens to sneak in.”

This galaxy is having a bad millennium.

NGC 1032 cleaves the quiet darkness of space in two in this image from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope.

A new series by artist Joel Daniel Phillips (previously featured here). charts the discovery and production of oil in the Los Angeles area. a county founded on fossil fuel, an economic and environmental history deeply at odds with many contemporary Californians ideas of sustainability and the identity of one of the most well known cities in the world. Created from reference photographs found in the Los Angeles Public Library, Phillips drawings walk the line between imagination and reality; the actual past and our possible future.

THE OSIRIS-REx mission, which will map and return samples from asteroid Bennu, is expected to reach the asteroid in August, 2018. This composite image of the Earth and Moon is made from data captured by OSIRIS-REx's MapCam instrument on Oct. 2, 2017, when the spacecraft was approximately 3 million miles from Earth.

Alexis Hagestad is a photographer based in Missoula, Montana.
