My Robot Friend - It's Raining Cats

@chels. I don't even know.

The silliest thing ever.  And probably a daylong earworm. You might recall My Robot Friend from their wonderful 2002 track, We're The Pet Shop Boys, which was later covered by Robbie Williams and the Pet Shop Boys themselves. I still play the original often.

The Boehner Family Goes To Pot

by Joe
House Speaker John Boehner's future son-in-law is a furriner. With waist-length dreadlocks.  And one misdemeanor nothing pot arrest that the Freepers are going nuts over.  The happy couple is registered at Williams-Sonoma. There's no part of this story that isn't funny to me and I feel bad about that.

Mike Florio Says Geno Smith Is A Big Baby For Not Attending Day Two Of The Draft

by Christmas Ape

Though more than a few analysts had predicted he would be Top 10 pick, Geno Smith sat around all night on Thursday without being selected in the first round of the NFL Draft. In fact, the only quarterback selected was the Bills’ surprising choice of E.J. Manuel with the 16th pick. Rather than hang around on the second day to see which team swoops him up (presumably) in the 2nd round, Geno told the Matron Saint that he won’t be coming back to Radio City Music Hall for Day 2 of the draft.

Because trolls have been fond of making sweeping claims about Geno Smith’s character for months leading up to the draft, it’s only right that Mike Florio used the news as an excuse to drub him some more.

If Smith doesn’t return, he’ll be confirming in the minds of many that he can’t show grit and resolve under pressure. That he’ll sink his head and slump his shoulders when the team is 14 points behind in the third quarter. That he’ll pout if he’s not the starter or if he gets benched. That he’ll complain about the use of too many running plays when he prefers to air it out.

“HE’LL ME-FIRST GLORY BOY UNTIL THERE’S NO GLORY FOR ANYONE ELSE WHEN IT SHOULD REALLY GO TO THE GRITSTERS.”

“IF I DON’T GET TO PIE GENO SMITH IN THE FACE AND PEE ON HIS SHOES, HE’S JUST SHOWING THE WORLD THAT HE’S A SULLEN, DETACHED WHIMPERY BITCH. THAT’S WHAT SEPARATES THE GREATS FROM THE BUSTS.”

“THIS MAN IS SHOWING GREAT DISRESPECT TO RADIO CITY MUSIC HALL, WHICH IS ONE OF THE NATION’S GREAT VENUES TO SIT AROUND AND NOT GET WHAT YOU WANT. GENO SMITH OWES THE CITY OF NEW YORK AN APOLOGY!”

Mike Florio is the worst.

So your Macbook isn’t quite ‘comic booky’ enough? Try this

by Mark Kardwell

MacBook-Superhero-Keyboard-Skin-2

This awesome-looking comics-themed Macbook keyboard skin has been doing the rounds on design blogs, but I saw it on HiConsumption. For an atrocious, eyes-on-the-keyboard, six-fingers-in-a-claw, typist such as myself, it’d be a nightmare. But it does look fantastic. It’s from Killer Duck Decals, and is available from its Etsy store.

The accompanying blurb shows them to be very witty people, indeed: “Zorro instead of Zatanna because I didn’t want to deal with the top hat, sorry”; “Our skins are meant to make your stuff look cooler, not make them bomb proof. So don’t go flashing them around in the bad part of town and skipping them across lakes because they do not grant your electronics super-powers.”

There’s a few inspired choices on this thing (check out the “Y” key), and a couple I’ll admit I’m baffled by. (What are the icons on the “O” and “D” keys referring to? I presume I’ll kick myself when someone points them out.)

Order Pizza Hut from Xbox 360

by Alexander Sliwinski
Andrew.frampton

@Skippy. I have glimpsed the future, and it is a lower end pizza chain owned by Pepsi-co.

Xbox, order pizza Xbox 360 owners now have the option to download the Pizza Hut app for their console and place an order directly from the comfort of their couch, cozy recliner or beanbag chair. As Polygon reports, there's no need to search for a phone anymore, as the chain's full menu (pizza, pasta, breadsticks, agita) is available from the app. Shame or pride after ordering can be shared across Facebook.

"We're always looking at ways to give our audience more of what they're interested in," Xbox's Larry Hryb told Polygon. "If you look at our audience, they love pizza. I mean, who doesn't? It has international appeal, and Pizza Hut is a recognized brand that matches up well with the Xbox brand."

Don't go thinking Microsoft is some pioneer in this space. In 2005, World of Warcraft let you order chinese food from Pandaren Xpress... no, wait, that was a joke. However, EverQuest 2 players could order a pie by simply typing /pizza.

Chinese People Pulling Insane Loads

by Brian Ashcraft

Alain Delorme’s photo series "Totems" shows an another side of China's migrant workers. Make that, a truly amazing side.

According to Delorme, each worker in the photo looks "like a superhero able to carry around this kind of load." The photos, however, have a meaning that's deeper than the sheer spectacle.

"It is above all a way to make people think about the consumer society we live in via the 'Made in China' phenomenon," Delorme told Fast Company, "with all its identical and exchangeable objects produced in big quantities."

RuPaul’s Drag Race: Season 5, Episode 11

by Chad Sell
Andrew.frampton

@Chels.

This is the episode I had been waiting for, and dreading. Who would make it to the final three? I’ve been preoccupied with that question all season, and we finally got our answer, with a few swerves along the way.

Despite her uproariously funny puppet performance, Alaska seemed destined to go. She stumbled through the most basic of choreography for the girls’ routine, and her candy couture dress was literally falling apart as she prepped for the runway. From the season’s start, I’ve had the nagging worry that Alaska wouldn’t make it to the end, given all the early comparisons of her with Sharon Needles, and then increasingly Jinkx! Surely Ru wouldn’t have two “funny queens” in her final three!?

AlaskaBut this season has had a lot of unexpected turns from the beginning–starting with the cast of queens. From its onset, I’ve been struck by this season’s focus on performers and comedy queens. Yeah, obviously you’ve got Jinkx as a triple threat, Alaska’s subversive humor, and Detox’s unique brand of lip sync. But remember Ivy’s wild assortment of circus skills and Alyssa’s impressive dancing background? She didn’t stick around long enough to show it, but Honey Mahogany is a fantastic singer, too. This ensemble was loaded with talent above and beyond the expected for a drag show.

Roxxxy claimed that Jinkx made it this far entirely on luck, that the challenges seemed custom built for a queen with her talents. But girl, there’s no luck in reality TV. This season has been all about performance–singing, dancing, comedy, comedy, comedy. It wasn’t luck, it was a clear shift on the part of Ru and the production team. All that being said, I don’t know what it all means–does Ru want a queen who can do it all, or have all these performance challenges been strung together just because they make for the best TV?

Roxxxy

It’s the answer to that question that will determine the winner of this Race.

Roxxxy would have rocked this show in its earlier seasons. She’s gorgeous, stylish, and brings a boatload of energy and enthusiasm to every challenge. Facing off against previous winners like Bebe or Tyra Sanchez, Roxxxy probably could have snatched the crown from either one of them. But in Season 5? I’m not sure. Given the shift in this show’s priorities, I don’t know if she’s a viable contender. But on the other hand, I could see how RuPaul wouldn’t want to set the precedent of consistently rewarding the campy/comedy/edgy queens, and so she might pick a queen like Roxxxy who embodies the highest ideals of glamour and polish in drag.

Detox

In any other season, Detox would have stood out from the pack–and she did in the early episodes! I thought she was the clear frontrunner, given her fierce combination of style, skills, and stunningly distinctive looks. She’s a magnificent queen, and well-rounded, but she had a hard time standing out in later challenges. When it came to acting and singing, Jinkx had an edge. In comedy challenges, it was hard to top Alaska’s razor sharp wit. I love Detox’s edgy outfits and expressive physical comedy, and I’m glad she made it so far into this competition.

Jinkx

I don’t know if it was luck, or a thread of fate woven by Ru and her production team, but Jinkx was certainly fortunate to face off against Detox performing one of the most eccentric (and delightful) song selections in Drag Race herstory. Like she said, the song was perfectly suited to Jinkx’s love of schtick, and she channeled its quirky charms through every inch of her being. Jinkx had clearly thought out the whole number, bringing distinctive choreography and character to it, and she justified her place in the final three.

Do you think it’ll come down to Jinkx and Alaska? What a lip sync that would be! Throughout the season’s second half, Jinkx has emerged as the fan-favorite to win, but Alaska has really picked up steam in just the last few weeks. And she’s the one queen who can reliably crack up Ru in the workroom. So, it’s anybody’s game! And it should be a hell of a show.

I don’t know if we get the clip show next, or what, but during the “recap week,” I’m hoping to draw some of the best queens and outfits I missed earlier in the season, so share your suggestions below. And yes, finally: ALYSSA.

And remember: buy prints and books of my Drag Race work right here and on Etsy!

Real Life Photos Mixed With 16-Bit Video Games Are Amazing

by Gergo Vas
Andrew.frampton

@Chelsea

The 16-bit era had unique visuals. Simple yet bright and colorful, we could always get lost in the tiny details. Taking parts of these memorable games and mixing them with a real life environment might sound odd, but if done right the results are beautiful.

Two gents, deviantART user Victor Sauron and Glauber Tanaka, played with the idea recently and shared their work separately, which involves a huge variety of characters from older consoles put into the real world. The first five images below (as well as the top image) are from Glauber Tanaka and include SNES classics such as TMNT IV: Turtles In Time, Top Gear 2 or U.N. Squadron. The rest are the work of Victor Sauron featuring classic characters and scenes you probably all recognize.

Let's have a look!

Who Wore The Matching Denim Outfit The Best: JT & Britney Or Nate Berkus & His Fiancé

by Stacy Lambe

Neither. Denim on denim only works if you are A) Bruce Springsteen, or B) Wait, there is no B because no one should wear all denim, cause it is tacky as hell.

Oprah’s design magnate Nate Berkus and his fiance Jeremiah Brent were spotted holding hands in New York City. The couple recently announced that they were getting married after an eight month courtship. No word on what inspired the matching outfits but maybe they were taking a page out of Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears’ old school matching days.

Which couple pulled off the denim look the best? Is there really any competing with JT and Brit?
