Audi announces Android-powered Mobile Audi Smart Display tablet
If you're in the market for a new Audi tablet, you might also be in the market for a new tablet. Audi's already announced their participation in the new Open Automotive Alliance with Google, and it was widely anticipated that they'd be announcing Android in the car at CES 2014. Well, they did, but not in the way you might have expected: it's a tablet.
The new 10.2-inch Mobile Audi Smart Display tablet is Audi's latest foray into electronics. Powered by a Tegra 4 chip, the Mobile Audi Smart Display runs Android underneath, but features a very heavily skinned launcher that is optimized for in car use. For passengers, not drivers. Audi's rolling out a new version of their rotary dial + touchpad MMI interface for drivers that integrates multitouch gestures and natural language voice controls (ala Google Now and Siri) for the drivers.
Corso, Saban, Red Lightning All Cameo In Title Game's Turning Point
For most of the first half last night, Auburn looked unbeatable while Florida State looked like a team that spent its season beating up on nobodies. Just before halftime, that changed. A masterful Jameis Winston scramble on third down sparked FSU's first touchdown, one that cut the Tigers' lead to 11 and suggested that, just maybe, the Seminoles had a chance.

12 People Who Should Cancel Their Gym Memberships
Out of all the optimistic people starting their new year's resolutions this week, the ones vowing to get back in shape and lose that holiday weight are always at the top of the list.
But of course, that's no easy task. First, you have to force yourself to even go to the gym, only to be greeted by a sea of medieval devices sent to torture you — or at least, that's what they feel like.

Sony's New Action Camera Is 5 Cams in One
LAS VEGAS — Sony isn't just doing an action cam. It's doing an action-cam swarm.
The Sony HDR-AS100V is actually five action cams in one, or at least it can be. While the camera works just fine mounted to a helmet or shoulder, it really levels-up the experience when you have a bunch of them all networked via an optional wrist controller

Up to five cameras can be "meshed" in this way, letting the user adjust the footage captured by each cam. The cameras themselves are splash-proof, and can capture video at up to 1080p at 24 frames per second. At 720p, they can record in slow motion at 120 fps or even super-slow at 240 fps. Read more...

LAS VEGAS — Sony got its feet wet with water-resistant phones last year after debuting the Xperia Z. Now, it's taking the idea to new depths, quite literally, with the Xperia Z1S, which will be exclusive to T-Mobile in the U.S.
The new Xperia phone has an IP58 rating, so it can withstand immersion in water as deep as 4.5 feet for 30 minutes (the Z could only go down as far as 3 feet). If you have a tendency to accidentally take your phone with you into the shallow end of your local pool, the Z1S is the smartphone you've been looking for.

Sony also improved on the water-sealed design. Whereas the Xperia Z had a rubberized cover for the headphone connector, the Z1S makes the connector itself waterproof, so there's no cover needed (and no cover to forget closing)There's also a dedicated camera button, enabling underwater photography (since the screen doesn't register finger taps underwater). Michael Bay bombs, awkwardly storms off stage at Samsung CES Press Event [VIDEO]
Michael Bay might be a living Hollywood legend, but clearly he’s more comfortable being behind the camera instead of it. At Samsung’s CES Press Event, where they announced the Samsung Galaxy NotePro and Samsung Galaxy TabPro among other products, Bay was invited to comment on the company’s innovative new curved TV display.
And then this happened (if you don’t like train wrecks or fails… don’t watch):
Initially I felt a bit bad for the guy and practically blushed of embarrassment just watching it happen. I can’t help but wonder what was going on in his head. Was he public speaking freeze shamed into exile? Does he just not give a blippety blip and decide to cut his losses short?
I’m sure you’ll have sarcastic responses in the comments that accurately identify the scenario. Personally, I think he was on the brink of a Christian Bale-like meltdown on whoever messed up his teleprompter, deciding it better to walk off and count to 10 billion. Regardless, Samsung did a great job rebounding and turning an otherwise awkward experience into a successful CES show.

The official 'House of Cards' season two trailer crackles with intrigue
The first season of House of Cards helped to change the way people think about original web series, earning nine Emmy nominations (and winning three) for its relentlessly cynical portrait of an ambitious congressman bending the world to his will. But seizing power by any means necessary has forced Kevin Spacey's Frank Underwood into some ugly decisions — and it appears that in season two, those decisions start coming back to haunt him. The official season two trailer, released by Netflix today, shows Underwood assuming the vice presidency as scrutiny mounts over the death of US Representative Peter Russo. The trailer ends with Underwood uttering a line some of us have been waiting to hear for almost a year: "Welcome back." The...

More about Mobile, Mobile Phones, Features, Humor, and TechOpen Automotive Alliance aims to make 2014 the year of Android in cars
Six founding companies want to see Android devices integrate seamlessly with our vehicles
It's clear that cars are one of the next platforms ready for a jump in innovation, and the newly-formed Open Automotive Alliance plans to lead the charge. Announced quietly via a press release and a post on the Android Google+ page, the OAA is a group that hopes to improve the integration between cars and Android devices. Google, GM, Audi, Honda, Hyundai and NVIDIA are the six founding members of the OAA, and naturally more companies are welcomed to join.
While initial details are a bit sparse, the broad goal of the OAA seems clear: be for the automotive industry what the Open Handset Alliance is for Android on phones and tablets. The group suggests 2014 can be the year of the connected and intelligent car, explaining that integration between our mobile devices and vehicles should be seamless. Not only for ease of use and entertainment purposes, but most importantly for driver safety.
The basic idea here is to not only push Android into the car itself, but to create a common platform across cars so that Android devices know how to connect and interact with them. If you've spent any time with various phones and cars you know it can be a rather hit-or-miss experience right now — the OAA wants to fix that.
The OAA's website claims that we will see "the first cars with Android integration" by the end of this year. Naturally each manufacturer will be moving at its own pace, but lets hope that now at least a few are moving in the same direction.
NVIDIA announces 192-core Tegra K1 processor
192 cores? You read that right. NVIDIA could have settled for just eight, maybe even twelve, but is that really pushing the envelop? Nah. Instead we have the Tegra K1, announced tonight at a private press event in Las Vegas as part of the kickoff to this year’s CES.
It’s not Tegra 5. NVIDIA sees at as a non-linear progression from previous Tegra chips. The K1 combines the heart of GeForce with the soul of Tesla, according to bossman Jen-Hsun Huang. The chipset is based on Kepler architecture, a departure from previous Tegra chips. This is the same technology that encompasses top-of-the-line chips found in high performance gaming PCs. NVIDIA is pushing the chip as a gaming platform, believing Android can disrupt consoles in the same way it affected smartphones, tablets, and personal computers.
Tegra K1 is aimed at bridging the gap for game developers, making it easy to create content for both mobile and console/PC devices. NVIDIA is partnering with Epic Games to bring the Unreal Engine 4 to the new Tegra K1 platform in an effort to solve this problem. An example:
In reality, the bulk of the chip’s 192 cores belong to the GPU. Parsing the processor down to it’s true form, the K1 will come in two flavors: one based on the 32-bit four-plus-one core Cortex A15 CPU and another version based on the Denver CPU, which is a 64-bit dual-core processor based on ARMv8. The chip promises GPU performance 1.5 times more efficient than any other on the market.

Dubai's Spectacular Fireworks Break Guinness World Record
Dubai started off 2014 with quite a bang: The city's New Year's Eve fireworks display broke the Guinness World Record for largest pyrotechnics show on New Year's Eve.
During the six-minute show, more than 500,000 fireworks exploded, spanning 62 miles of Dubai's seafront and ending with a grandiose "artificial sunset." The entire spectacle was controlled by a network of 100 computers, took 10 months to plan and cost a cool $6 million

The entire show was live streamed on YouTube; it begins at the 29-minute mark in the video above. The event shattered the previous record, held by Kuwait, in which 77,282 fireworks were set off in 2012. The new record joins several other superlatives that Dubai holds, including the world's tallest building, Burj Khalifa, and the world's largest manmade island, Palm Jumeirah Read more...

AT&T offering up to $450 to customers that switch from T-Mobile [UPDATE]
Rumors abound T-Mobile’s next phase of their Uncarrier program could involve buying customers out of their current contracts with competing carriers. One of those competitors just beat them to the punch. AT&T is offering up to $450 in incentives to customers switching from T-Mobile in an effort to sway users away from a service provider that has been causing headaches for others in the same business.
AT&T is offering up to $250 (depending on condition) to folks who trade-in their current T-Mobile smartphone. The money is distributed in the form of a promotion card good toward AT&T products and services. Additionally, customers can earn a $200 credit by opting into an AT&T Next plan or buying a device at full price. Activating a currently owned device on AT&T’s network qualifies a customer for the promotion as well (basically the credit applies to anything but a traditional subsidized service contract).
It’s a brazen move by AT&T. T-Mobile has caused quite the shakeup in the wireless industry, introducing their JUMP program, redefining the payment and upgrade process for mobile devices along with lower service rates. Every major carrier has followed suit and offered similar buying options in the months since. AT&T has been a particular target, and it’s suspected T-Mobile’s next move — to be unveiled next week at CES — would target the carrier by offering to buy out the early termination fees of customers switching from one network to the other. Not wanting to again be caught playing catchup, AT&T has struck first. Good for them.
UPDATE: T-Mobile’s CEO John Legere has issued a quick response via press release.
“This is a desperate move by AT&T on the heels of what must have been a terrible Q4 and holiday for them. I’m flattered that we have made them so uncomfortable! We used AT&T’s cash to build a far superior network and added Un-carrier moves to take tons of their customers – and now they want to bribe them back! Consumers won’t be fooled…nothing has changed; customers will still feel the same old pain that AT&T is famous for. Just wait until CES to hear what pain points we are eliminating next. The competition is going to be toast!”
