CBS and NBC to stream NFL playoff coverage for free

by Bryan Bishop

CBS and NBC are making it easy for football fans to follow along this postseason by streaming their NFL playoff coverage online for free. Following the precedent set in 2012, NBC will be offering both of its wild card match-ups this Saturday, while for the first time CBS will be streaming all four of its playoff games — including the AFC championship game. All told, the entire AFC side of the NFL playoff bracket will be free online for customers, so whether you're a Broncos or a Patriots fans, your bases are covered.

Of course, the rights to various games are divvied up amongst different networks, and Variety reports that Fox will be hiding its online streams behind the TV Everywhere initiative. Comcast, Cablevision, and AT&T...

Interesting Video Shows Why This Tree Really Isn't Cut in Half, Just an Illusion

At first glance, this tree may appear to be cut in half, but upon closer inspection, you'll see that it's just an illusion. That's right, graphic designer Daniel Siering teamed up with art director Mario Schuster (aka Mario Shu) to transform this solitary tree in Potsdam, Germany into a split, hovering trunk using only paint and tin foil. NSA Building Computer to Break 'Nearly Every Kind of Encryption'

by Fran Berkman

The U.S. National Security Agency is reportedly working on a development that would arguably bring its surveillance capabilities from "almost Orwellian," as a federal judge recently wrote, to full-fledged Orwellian.

The agency has invested nearly $80 million to build a computer that could break "nearly every kind of encryption," according to a Washington Post report published online Thursday. Based on documents provided by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, the Post reports the NSA is racing to build a "cryptologically useful quantum computer" research program called "Penetrating Hard Targets." 'American Psycho' and More Added to Netflix For New Year's Day

by The Daily Dot

A great poet once said, Nothing changes New Year's Day. And while that's true in many respects, it doesn't apply to Netflix. A handful of new movies were added to the site today.

Several titles will also be expiring today, and all the buzz around this year-end event has sparked a discussion once again about supporting brick-and-mortar video stores. Netflix had a pretty good year with its original programming, namely Orange Is the New Black and House of Cards, both of which will see second seasons in 2014. Has Netflix's accessibility made us more willing to binge, and therefore more willing to wait around for titles than seek them out? Read more...

We've covered shipping container homes before, but this one definitely takes the cake in terms of design an aesthetics. 21 Extremely Simple Cooking Life Hacks That Make Things Easier

File these under: cool life hacks. When you place a wooden spoon over the center of a pot it absorbs heat to prevent it from building up, thus no boil over. The spoon also helps to break the surface tension of the water. Though if it's already filled to the brim, this definitely won't work. Reporter Faints On-Air, Wakes, Continues With News Segment

by Neha Prakash

We've got a nomination for MVP of on-air reporting for 2013

Brooke Graham, a Salt Lake City, Utah-based reporter for KUTV, fainted during a live news broadcast about cross-country skiing. She collapsed during the first few seconds of the segment — with an audible thump as she hit the ground

But the interesting part came after her fall. Graham immediately wakes up and, almost without missing a beat, continues with her interview

In the segment, Graham claims she simply slipped and fell, but in a blog post, she admits to fainting

"Ha, such a crazy experience," Graham writes. "A lot of people have expressed concern and well wishes and I really appreciate it. However, this is not the first time I have passed out cold. I am known to faint any time I am in high altitudes and get too cold." Read more...

Best Buy offering Nexus 7 for $199 with $25 Google Play credit

by Andrew Martonik

Nexus 7 (2013)

Deal available both online and in-store, with Play Store codes sent by email

If you didn't happen to pick up a Nexus 7 during your holiday shopping, Best Buy is running a pretty great sale you may want to take advantage of. You can pick up Google's latest 7-inch tablet for just $199, that's $30 off, and also pick up a $25 Google Play credit in the process. Even if you don't see too much value to the Google Play gift, $30 off an already cheap tablet is nothing to sneeze at.

The sale is active from Best Buy's online store, including free shipping, and we've also heard from a few different folks who have found the deal active in brick-and-mortar stores as well. There's no special coupon code to receive the deal, and it looks as though the Google Play gift will be sent to customers via email. The one unfortunate part of this deal is that it seems to only apply to the 16GB Wifi model, not the higher storage capacity or LTE variants.

Source: Best Buy; Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

With just two days left before marijuana sales become legal in Colorado, the state's largest newspaper has unveiled a new website devoted to covering pot culture inside and out

Called The Cannabist, the site will be run by Ricardo Baca, The Denver Post's marijuana editorBaca's appointment last month made waves across the media — he got a coveted Colbert Report appearance out of it — as has the newspaper's ongoing search for a pot critic.

Baca's video introducing the site is worth watching just for the extracts he reads from the many, many applications he's received for the pot-critic post. Here's a taste: Read more...

Just because you're responsible for reporting the news doesn't mean you can't be the news

News anchors and reporters alike made plenty of headlines this year for their gaffes, hot mic snafus and awkward on-camera moments

While the slip-ups may go down in YouTube infamy, some cost journalists their jobs. Remember AJ Clemente, the rookie reporter who cursed during his first live news broadcast and was subsequently fired?

Some stories don't have happy endings, but for the most part, news anchor bloopers are simply a source of cringe-worthy laughs. Take a look at the most ridiculous news fails of 2013, above. Read more...

Spider-Man Fights Batman And Robin In Ridiculous MMA Match

by Tom Ley

I don't have any information or context to provide to help you make sense of how this video came to be. The best I can do is this message board thread that has live play-by-play of the action, but it isn't necessarily all that helpful. ("No one in the crowd. Including us, know what the fucks going on. Before you start shouting 'staged'. I can confirm they arnt. The fights are SO bad that they couldn't possibly been choreographed.") Anyway, I think that's for the best. You should be able to enjoy Spider-Man beating the absolute shit out of Batman and Robin without having to think about what you're watching.

Samsung Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3 expected to receive KitKat as early as January

by Chris Chavez

Samsung Galaxy S4 launch event New York

Where HTC has been refreshingly open about their upgrade schedule for Android 4.4 KitKat, we’re still forced to play the guessing game with others. Dealing specifically with the Samsung Galaxy S4 and Samsung Galaxy Note 3 — 2 of Samsung’s biggest devices of the year — users are still left in the dark on when they should be expecting Android 4.4 KitKat to hit their devices.

That’s not to say we haven’t had a few hints. Back in November, a purported leaked document from Samsung India showed a KitKat release date for the Galaxy S4 and Note 3 slated for January. Adding more fuel to that date is French carrier SFR who, in a blog post, says KitKat will be available in late January/February for Samsung’s flagships. SFR has been reliable with their info in the past, hitting the mark on Android 4.3 timing for the Galaxy S3, Note 2, and HTC One.

Of course update timing is always different depending on region. Typically, software updates like these need to undergo an extensive testing process before carriers will push them to handsets on their network. A full fledged firmware update like KitKat is bound to come with more than a few changes to TouchWiz. We’ll keep you updated.

Report: Samsung now mass producing 5.25-inch 2560 x 1440 for the Galaxy S5

by Quentyn Kennemer

samsung-logo

As we close in on a possible February announcement for the Samsung Galaxy S5, more and more reports about its hardware and specs are bound to leak out. This time, a report out of Korean outlet DDaily suggests Samsung has started mass producing a 5.25-inch 2560 x 1440 display, likely for use in the next generation of the Galaxy S line.

The display is only a hair above the 5-inch panel found on the Galaxy S4. Samsung might be pulling the same thing they pulled with the Galaxy Note 3 — that is, increasing the display size without increasing the size of the overall phone. In any case, we’re glad they have decided to keep the device close to 5 inches than 6, wisely leaving room for the Galaxy Note 3 to shine in its own category.

The Galaxy S5 is rumored to be coming with a 64-bit version of Samsung’s quad-core octa-core processor, though it’s entirely possible we’ll see a Snapdragon 800 inside as well. We’re also expecting 3GB of RAM and likely a 13 megapixel camera sensor.

Of course, we’d prefer to wait until Samsung announces the details officially before we assume too much, so we’ll be doing just that. Circle back around February as we expect all of this will go down at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

First Google-certified CyanogenMod phone, the Oppo N1, on sale 12/24 [VIDEO]

by Kevin Krause

oppo-n1-cyanogenmod

News of the Oppo N1 shipping with CyanogenMod pre-installed dropped in September, with the involved parties revealing last month that the device would launch in December. As the end of the month draws near, the partners have cut it close with the announcement that the limited edition version of the N1 will go on sale December 24th.

While this means you likely won’t be able to grab one in time for a late Christmas present, the world’s first phone to ship with CyanogenMod out of the box and Google CTS certification will soon be in the hands of Android enthusiasts with a liking for CM’s take on the mobile platform. In the US, the Oppo N1 with CyanogenMod will be available through Amazon and Oppo’s web store. An exact pricing has not been announced.

The Oppo N1 features a 5.9-inch 1080p display, 1.7GHz Snapdragon 600 CPU, and 2GB of RAM along with a 13MP (rotating) camera. The special edition CyanogenMod version will ship with a themed case and other extras.
