As soon as DC Comics showed off the design for the new Batgirl, my first thought was about cosplay. I knew creative folks would jump all over making the ensemble before the first issue of the new series hit shelves in October, and I wasn’t disappointed. EPBOT spotted this new Batgirl cosplayer at Tampa Bay Comic Con, and she looks just like the concept sketch that was released. Amazing.

One of the things I love best about fashion these days is just how many companies have geek couture. Once upon a time, if you wanted to show your love for Star Wars, you had the option of a t-shirt or halloween costume, but it wasn’t the sort of thing you could wear if you wanted to dress up a bit.

Luckily, companies like We Love Fine are committed to making fashionable geekwear, and now they’ve teamed up with Goldie to create a Star Wars boutique collection.

My personal favorites are the Princess Leia Dress (complete with a hair buns hoodie), a very chic Empire Strikes Back skirt, and the Dark Side Glamour dress, but they have other great styles as well in sizes small to extra large.

The internet has a penchant for turning things into animals. We’ve seen Disney princesses as sloths, manatees dressed like superheroes, and now we have all the original Pokémon as alpacas. Why not? DeviantArt user Lopaki came up with the Alpacamon, and I’ve got to say that the makeover makes the pocket monsters even cuter. I want Alpacamon plushes!

“Oh, shiny!” If there’s one sci-fi engineering lady that stole my heart, it’s Kaylee from Firefly. She was always so positive, even when Reavers were inbound. So, if you’d like to show off a little Kaylee positivity, you might want to pick up this “shiny” Firefly T-shirt. As you can see, the whole crew (even Vera!) spells out Kaylee’s favorite saying, and there’s also a unisex tank version too.

Geek girls know from experience that many retailers don’t understand that we like the same things geek boys like. So, we often get girlyfied versions instead of something that’s just made in a girl’s size.

One such retailer, Lands’ End, was taken to task by a mom who wanted to know why the boys got space themed tee’s with the solar system or a NASA logo and girls only had options for “cute” shirts with colorful stars (see above) or dogs in tutus.

What’s interesting here is that, while many retailers might not give it another thought, Lands’ End responded and even went a step further by updating their t-shirt selection for girls.

Dear Lands’ End,

My nine year old daughter loves science; She especially enjoys learning about ocean life and outer space. She has read more books on sharks than I ever knew existed, follows NASA news, and hopes to be an astronaut one day.

So you can imagine her reaction when she saw your company’s science-themed t-shirt designs for boys featured on page 26 of your latest catalog. The boys’ options include realistic images of planets and our solar system, labeled diagrams of sharks and dinosaurs, and a “NASA Crew” tee design that she immediately declared to be “the coolest shirt ever.”

We immediately flipped forward in your catalog to find the equivalent shirts in girls’ sizes. But when we got to the available t-shirt designs for girls on page 56, instead of science-themed art, we were treated to sparkly tees with rhinestones, non-realistic looking stars, and a design featuring a dog dressed like a princess and wearing a tutu.

My daughter was very confused. Lots of her friends that are girls love science, too. Why were there no cool science shirts for girls?

So, Lands’ End corporate, how should I respond to my daughter’s question? In 2014, why are you selling “mighty” tees for boys and “adorable” tees for girls? (Descriptions taken straight from your marketing copy.)

My daughter is mighty and she loves science. And until you recognize that it’s not only boys that can fit that description, I’m afraid our family will no longer be shopping in your stores.

King of New York, the follow up of the imensly popular King of Tokyo, will be flooding the news sites soon as details are released about the game. Until then we’ve got an exclusive card preview for the upcoming game. Behold, Phoenix Blood!

King of New York will add new mechanics to those familiar with King of Tokyo, adding things like building destruction, monster fame, and multiple control points on a larger board. There will be 6 new monsters, but you’ll also be able to use the monsters already released in this new game.

All of the candles are soy-based, and the descriptions sound delicious.
