Prepare Yourself For The New Rap Song From The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Movie [Video]

by Alan Kistler
Tom Wright

The second video is a new trailer. Very excited for what is obviously going to be one of the best movies of a generation.

Teenage-Mutant-Ninja-Turtles-Poster-header-2

You knew it was coming. Ever since we heard the theme song from the original cartoon series, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have often been associated with hilarious silly to awkwardly bad music. Many of us even learned the dance that went along with Vanilla Ice’s “Ninja Rap.” (or was that just me?) While I personally enjoy the theme from the reboot cartoon airing on Nickelodeon, I can’t say much for “Shell Shocked,” from the soundtrack of the new live-action movie. The song that seems to take itself too seriously is by Juicy J, Wiz Khalifa and Ty Dollar $ign, and features Kill the Noise and Madsonik.

Check out the song after the break, along with a new TV spot and a larger image of the new poster.

Marvel Plans to Release One Sequel, One Franchise Every Year

by Lauren Berkley
Tom Wright

Excellent.

Back in March, we brought you the  news that Sony Pictures would release a Spider-Man or Spidey-themed movie every year.

Now, Marvel is planning  to “release one sequel and one new franchise each year,” beginning with Guardians of the Galaxy, JoBlo reports.

marvel-superheroes

Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel Studios, revealed the plan in an interview with IGN on Monday:

[Guardians of the Galaxy] fulfilled our desire to do something different. To start producing, each year, a film that was the sequel to a pre-existing, successful franchise and do something new. We’re doing that next year with Age of Ultron, with Ant-Man, and hope to maybe continue that model in the coming years.

So, let’s see: There’s Guardians (and probably a Guardians sequel), Avengers 2 and Avengers 3, Thor 3, Captain America 3, and Doctor Strange  — and those are just the ones we know of for sure.

Little Tara Dactyl, you can be a scientist like your mom!

According to the National Science Foundation, 66 percent of 4th grade girls say they like science and math, yet only 18 percent of those who major in engineering are female.

Verizon has produced an ad showing how social “norms” and seemingly innocuous phrases might turn young girls away from pursuing the STEM subjects and careers.

See How Batman’s Iconic Costume Has Changed Through The Last 75 Years

by Nicole Wakelin

Ah, the Dark Knight.

Batman is celebrating his 75th birthday this year and this infographic shows just how much the Bat Symbol has changed over all those years. It even breaks it down by comic variants and those seen in the films. This look back comes just in time for “Batman Day” on July 23rd.

However, we went a step further and added a second infographic that focuses solely on Batman’s cowls. It covers all the cowl’s changes from huge pointy ears to no ears and everywhere in between.

See both infographics after the break.

First Look At “Avengers: Age Of Ultron”

by Geek Girl Diva
Tom Wright

Always looking forward to the next Avengers film.

EW ultron cover

We got our first look at Avengers: Age Of Ultron thanks to Entertainment Weekly and it looks good. These aren’t our bright and shiny, newly minted Avengers. This team looks beat up but determined, which works perfectly within the larger timeline.

This is a teaser for the magazine itself in which EW’s Anthony Breznican sat down with Joss Whedon and Robert Downey for an in depth look at the movie, so you’ll have to buy it to read that, but they did give us a synopsis – which is after the break to protect you from spoilers. But, I say spoil yourself.

For better or worse (trust us, it’s worse), his Tony Stark has devised a plan that won’t require him to put on the Iron Man suit anymore, and should allow Captain America, Thor, Black Widow, Hawkeye, and the Hulk to get some much needed R&R as well. His solution is Ultron, self-aware, self-teaching, artificial intelligence designed to help assess threats, and direct Stark’s Iron Legion of drones to battle evildoers instead.

The only problem? Ultron (played by James Spader through performance-capture technology) lacks the human touch, and his superior intellect quickly determines that life on Earth would go a lot smoother if he just got rid of Public Enemy No. 1: Human beings. “Ultron sees the big picture and he goes, ‘Okay, we need radical change, which will be violent and appalling, in order to make everything better’; he’s not just going ‘Muhaha, soon I’ll rule!’” Whedon says, rubbing his hands together.

They also have a small gallery of new images from the set, so make sure to check those out.

P.S. I have no idea why that robot in the background is saying “domo arigato”, but someone is a Styx fan.

‘Like a Girl’ Campaign Hopes to Champion Girls’ Confidences [VIDEO]

by Lauren Berkley
Tom Wright

Heck yeah little Tara Dactyl, you're gonna do lots of stuff like a girl.

There seems to be a renaissance of feminism hitting the airwaves — and Internet — in recent months.

Now, appropriately enough, Always, maker of feminine products, has made a “Girl Power” commercial, directed by Lauren Greenfield, “Sundance Film Festival award-winning creator of The Queen of Versailles, according to AdAge.com.

In the ad, Greenfield asks girls of all ages — and one young brother — what it means to do something “like a girl.” It’s interesting to note that the older girls know the phrase meant to be insulting, while the younger ones aren’t sure — one girl only guesses that it sounds like a bad thing.

With their “Like a Girl” campaign, Always is hoping to “champion girls’ confidence” as they hit puberty, as their research showed half of girls lose their confidence as they hit their teen years.

Harley Quinn shoes. Yes...

It looks like retailers are catching on to the fact that fans will just hand paint shoes if they can’t find them on the market because Hot Topic has two new shoe styles featuring Harley Quinn colors and symbols from Supernatural that resemble painted Toms. This Woman Makes Bathroom Selfies Nerdy In A Very Clever Way

by Amy Ratcliffe

That is pretty cool.

bathroom selfies 5

The number of selfies I see posted all over the internet amazes me. I’m even more surprised by the number of people who manipulate the way they look in selfies using apps to make them look skinnier or to add makeup. Instagram user mirrorsme is doing the kind of editing I appreciate though; she’s drawing on mirrors to create scenes that include characters like Batman, Joker, the Genie from Aladdin, and more. This is the kind of selfie I can get behind!

Journalist Publishes Own Twitter Password; Pays Price

by JLister
Tom Wright

Wow. Unintended consequences.

twitterverify

A Wall Street Journal  journalist has published his Twitter password to prove the value of two-factor authentication. Christopher Mims remains unhacked, but his argument hasn’t been entirely borne out.

Mims wrote a piece titled “The Password Is Finally Dying. Here’s Mine” with the subheading “Device-Based Authentication Is Making Passwords Irrelevant.” Ironically the piece is behind a paywall meaning many readers will need a password to see it, though workarounds for the Journal’s viewing restrictions aren’t exactly a secret.

The thrust of Mims’ argument was that two-factor authentication makes the password irrelevant and a dying entity. Of course, that somewhat ignores the fact that the password is very much one of the two said factors.

To attempt to prove his point, Mims revealed that the password for his @mims Twitter account is “christophermims” though he didn’t divulge whether that’s always been the case or he deliberately chose something “obvious” to make the point.

The good news for Mims is that nobody has yet gained unauthorized access to his account and made bogus posts. The bad news is that, predictably, he got a steady stream of text messages as people attempted to log-in and Twitter sent a verification code to his phone. He says he was soon getting two messages a minute and eventually had to switch the default to having the authentication run via the Twitter iPhone app.

To make things even worse, the Twitter authentication process meant anyone attempting to log in to Mims’s account could see his listed phone number, which of course quickly appeared online. Mims hasn’t revealed how many people tried to call him, but his number is now out of service and he says he’s switching to Google Voice for his voice call needs.

Mims says he will be detailing his experiences in a follow-up piece later today, but insists he has proved his point. That’s true only to a limited extent. His revealing his password hasn’t led to anyone accessing his account (as one Twitter user noted, thankfully he wasn’t mugged for his phone), but he sure has illustrated that keeping your password secret makes life a whole lot easier.

It appears Mims has now changed his Twitter password.

Listen as Desperate Comcast Rep Refuses to Cancel a Customer’s Service

by Jordan Weissmann
Tom Wright

If you click through, you can hear the 8 minute conversation. I listened, and what a riot.

This weekend, tech journalist Ryan Block attempted to cancel his Comcast subscription over the phone. Instead of a quick hello and goodbye, the conversation turned into a harrowing, 18-minute customer service odyssey, with the company rep refusing again and again to disconnect Block's service without an explanation. The guy sounds like a soon-to-be ex desperately trying to fend off a breakup. Sample dialogue:

Rep: I’m just trying to figure out what it is about Comcast service that you don’t want to keep.
Block: This phone call is actually a really amazing representative example of why I don’t want to stay with Comcast.
Rep: OK, but I’m trying to help you.
Block: The way you can help me is by disconnecting my service.
Rep: But how is that helping you! How is that helping you! Explain to me how that is helping you!

This is not normal behavior. Like John Herrman over at The Awl, I can hardly imagine what horrible, punitive incentive structure Comcast has put in place for its employees that might inspire this sort of interaction. There's something almost heartbreaking in the moment the rep finally gives up.The recording below starts about 10 minutes into the conversation.

It’s fun to shop for products simply based on packaging from time to time, and I definitely do it with perfume bottles. I mean, if I can get a nice scent and have something that looks good on my shelf, why wouldn’t I buy it?
