HBO's The Plot Against America Reimagines WWII With Fascist Leader As President

HBO has a new limited-series coming this March that rewrites history. The Plot Against America focuses on the political rise of Charles Lindbergh, dragging America towards fascism, based on the book of the same name by Philip Roth.

Revealed at the TCA winter press tour, the six-part limited series is created by David Simon and Ed Burns, the minds behind HBO's The Wire and Generation Kill. The Plot Against America "imagines an alternate American history during World War II, told through the eyes of a working-class Jewish family in New Jersey as they endure the political rise of Charles Lindbergh, an aviator-hero and xenophobic populist, who captures the presidency and turns the nation toward fascism," according the synopsis from a recent press release.

The series stars Zoe Kazan (The Deuce), Morgan Spector (Boardwalk Empire), Winona Ryder (Stranger Things), John Turturro (Tranformers), Anthony Boyle (The Lost City of Z), Azhy Robertson (Marriage Story), and Caleb Malis. Ben Cole will be in a supporting role, playing Charles Lindbergh.

"As one of our greatest novelists, Philip Roth was generally more known for narratives that went directly to the human heart and the human condition," says Simon, who was able to meet with Roth once to discuss the project before the novelist’s death in 2018. "But with 'Plot,' he delivered an emotionally moving political tract about our country taking a dry run at totalitarianism and intolerance. That it was published in 2004 makes it no less prescient a document at this moment in time. Roth was warning us that it can happen here. And it can."

Burns and Simon will write the series, with Minkie Spiro (Downton Abbey) serving as director Episodes 1-3. Thomas Schlamme (The West Wing) will direct the final three parts of the series.

The Plot Against America comes to HBO on March 16 at 9 PM ET/PT.

Fitbit wants to find out why you're not sleeping properly with Snore Detect

by George Storr

Fitbit is testing a new ‘Snore Detect’ feature, and if you own a Fitbit Versa 2 you can sign up to try it out early.

The now Google-owned fitness brand says the aim of the feature is to help it to try to improve people’s sleep.

Related: Best Fitbit

In an invitation sent to selected Fitbit users, the company announced: “The Fitbit Labs Snore Detect Beta program is now open for Fitbit users who have a Versa 2. It will be open for a limited period of time and to a limited number of users, so enroll now!

“Don’t let snoring rob you of your rest. By joining the Snore Detect Beta, you can easily monitor snoring and your bedroom sound level: Use the built-in microphone on your smartwatch to monitor snoring from you or your bed partner. Receive a daily report that shows snoring duration and intensity. Find out if a noisy bedroom disrupts your sleep. Perhaps a pet, siren or chirping bird is the source.”

If you own a Versa 2 and haven’t checked your emails for a while, it could be worth having a look to see if you’ve been invited. If the trial is successful we can expect to see this feature added to the standard Fitbit setup.

How good an addition would this be to Fitbit’s roster of features? We’re not immediately sure. The NHS advice on snoring certainly doesn’t make it sound serious enough to monitor constantly…

The advice says: “Snoring is very common and usually isn’t caused by anything serious. There are things you can do to help yourself if it’s a problem.”

Unless snoring really impacts on your sleep, or your partner’s sleep, it isn’t likely to be an issue. That is, unless you have sleep apnoea, which is a related condition that could be serious if it isn’t treated.

Perhaps a more compelling argument for the snore detection feature is its ability to monitor other sounds. It could tell you, for example, if your room was filled with noise from the street while you were sleeping. You might be unaware of recurring noises, happening at certain times of night, which could impact your sleep.

We’re not immediately sure this will be a valuable addition to Fitbit’s features, but it will definitely be interesting to see the results of the beta testing. Hopefully it will answer key questions: Do users like it? Is it reliable? And can it help people develop better sleep patterns?

The Continental: John Wick TV Show Is 'Moving Along,' Says Starz Boss

by Adam Bankhurst
The Continental, the John Wick TV show spinoff in development at Starz, is "moving along" and is being carefully planned out so it doesn't "interfere with the motion picture side of things." At the Television Critics Association's winter press tour, Starz CEO Jeffrey Hirsch gave an update on the series that is said to take place early in the history of the John Wick universe. "I had a meeting on a season pitch for this yesterday and it's moving along," Hirsch said. "We like the group of writers, and we’re trying to get it in the right place so it doesn’t interfere with the motion picture side of things." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/05/10/john-wick-3-parabellum-review"] While a date has yet to be set for The Continental's debut, Hirsch continued by saying it will most likely premiere after the fourth John Wick film that is currently set to be released in theaters on May 21, 2021. While Keanu Reeves will most likely appear in The Continental, Hirsch has yet to confirm it. However, president of programming for Starz Carmi Zlotnik had previously stated in 2018 that we can "expect to see [Keanu Reeves] at some point in the series. That is part of the ongoing discussion." John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum released in theaters last year and, in our review, we said "chock full of inventive set-pieces and brutal kills, while also providing new facets to the intricate underworld lore fans of the franchise have come to enjoy, John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum pushes its title character to his breaking point and back while offering fresh information about his backstory." Scottish police rolling out tech to bypass phone passwords

by Chris Smith

Police in Scotland are planning to roll out more than 40 new kiosks that would enable officers to access data from smartphones without need for the master password.

The so-called “cyber kiosk” technology, which will come into effect from January 20, is designed to speed up investigations into tech-based crimes, including those that involve child abuse.

Cops north of the border say the cyber kiosks will enable officers to “bypass passwords [and] overcome locks and encryption security to access the data held on a mobile device” once a phone is plugged into them.

Related: Best VPN

Despite the obvious privacy implications, Deputy Chief Constable Malcolm Graham claimed the new tech would make it possible for the Old Bill to keep pace with the advanced tech users, hinting that those in the nonce community could suffer most.

He said (via The Herald) officers are “committed to providing the best possible service to victims and witnesses of crime.”

Graham added: “This means we must keep pace with society. People of all ages now lead a significant part of their lives online and this is reflected in how we investigate crime and the evidence we present to courts.

“Many online offences disproportionately affect the most vulnerable people in our society, such as children at risk of sexual abuse, and our priority is to protect those people.

“Current limitations, however, mean the devices of victims, witnesses and suspects can be taken for months at a time, even if it later transpires that there is no worthwhile evidence on them. By quickly identifying devices which do and do not contain evidence, we can minimise the intrusion on people’s lives and provide a better service to the public.”

The fuzz in Scotland have spent almost £400,000 on the kiosks over the last few years, but now it seems they’re ready to come into effect, following objection. While the tech is likely to assist in catching some criminals, there are obvious fears the tech might be misused.

Star Trek: Picard Officially Renewed for Season 2

by Joseph Knoop

CBS All Access’ Star Trek: Picard has been renewed for a second season, before the first season even premieres on January 23.

Julie McNamara, executive vice president of original content for CBS All Access, made the announcement on Sunday as part of a Television Critics Association presentation.

“We’re thrilled to announce plans for a second season before the series’ debut, and we are confident that ‘Star Trek’ fans and new viewers alike will be captured by the stellar cast and creative team’s meticulously crafted story when it premieres on Jan. 23,” McNamara said in a statement.

Reports of a season 2 being in development were all but confirmed back in December, thanks to Deadline. Those early reports indicated that season 2 would be 10 episodes long, but CBS has yet to confirm that much.

Terry Matalas, writer on 12 Monkeys, Nikita, and two episodes of Star Trek: Enterprise, is set to join as executive producer on the series.

[ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/12/14/picard-viewing-guide-the-star-trek-to-watch-before-the-show"]

Star Trek: Picard will follow the continuing adventures of the former captain of the USS Enterprise, Jean-Luc Picard, as played by the iconic Sir Patrick Stewart, 20 years after the events of Star Trek: The Next Generation. He’ll be joined by a cast of new (and plenty of returning) faces, including Jonathan Frakes’ Riker, Jeri Ryan’s Seven of Nine, Brent Spiner’s Data, Marina Sirtis’ Deanna Troi, and others.

IGN spoke with Sir Patrick Stewart about Star Trek: Picard at Comic Con, where he revealed the name of his canine companion.

Explaining the World of The Witcher

by Nic Reuben

War. Death. Betrayal. Backstabbing. Subterfuge. Yes, those last three words mean basically the same thing, but the world of The Witcher has a lot of it, so it’s worth highlighting. Here’s a handy summary of places, politics and events you need to know when watching Netflix’s The Witcher.

Read on for the full cheat sheet on the world inhabited by Geralt of Rivia, Yennefer, Ciri and the rest...

The Continent

What is the Continent anyway? Well, it’s where most of the Witcher takes place - the landmass containing both Nilfgaard and the Northern Kingdoms. It’s also home to both the elves’ Brokilon Forest and the dwarfish mountain region of Mahakam. It’s part of the Northern hemisphere, with the southern being much less explored and populus. The planet this all takes place on, by the way, is generally just referred to as “Earth” or “The Globe,” despite our repeated suggestions to Netflix that they call it “Witcheros.”

The Witcher's Fight Scenes Were Choreographed By Game of Thrones' Night King

by Matt Fowler
One of the first big fights you see on Netflix's The Witcher happens between Henry Cavill's Geralt and Emma Appleton's Renfri, and that clash was sorted and choreographed by Wolfgang Stegemann, who Cavill had worked with on Mission Impossible: Fallout. But Stegemann wasn't the full-time Witcher series stunt coordinator. No, that was Vladimir Furdik - aka Game of Thrones' Night King! Netflix's Behind the Scenes podcast revealed how Furdik envisioned Geralt as a fighter as well as how he constructed the actual first confrontation on the series: Geralt's slaying of the Kikimora. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=netflixs-the-witcher-cast-vs-video-game-characters&captions=true"] Though the Kikimora battle was never described in the Andrzej Sapkowski Witcher story "The Lesser Evil," which is what the premiere episode adapts, showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich thought "What's a better way to introduce [Geralt] than having him killing a monster when you first find him?" "In the books we actually never see him kill the Kikimora," she explained to host Brandon Jenkins. "He actually arrives in Blaviken with the Kikimora's head on his donkey. So we never get to see him kill it." "We spent almost one month on this fight," Furdik said. "I thought that [Geralt] should be fighter who can already predict, three seconds ahead, when he's going to kill someone else. When he fights somebody he can already predict what they're doing. So his fight should look like very comfortable, kind of like ballet." In his gym, Furdik prepared for the fight, taking into consideration that "the Kikimora is three meters tall and she has eight legs." Furdik then constructed massive Kikimora legs from long plastic pips and made a homemade adversary. "I brought in six people," he said, "and put them on the table." Giving the legs to the guys on the table, Furdik "just stayed under the legs and and started to build the fight." After running through the fight over and over at a slowed down pace, all the moves were taught to Cavill, who never used a stunt double, or a body double of any kind, on The Witcher. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/12/23/the-witcher-henry-cavill-breaks-down-geralts-fight-with-renfri"] Hissrich has revealed that The Witcher: Season 2 will land in 2021 and be much more linear in its storytelling. Gamer Saves Friend's Life From 5,000 Miles Away

by Petey Oneto
A 20-year-old gamer in America saved a friend's life from more than 5,000 miles away earlier this month, according to a report from the BBC. 17-year-old North West England resident Aidan Jackson was playing video games online with his friend, 20-year-old Texas resident Dia Lathora, on January 2 when Jackson experienced a seizure. "I just put my headset back on and I heard what I could only describe as a seizure, so obviously I started to get worried and immediately started asking what was going on and if he was okay," Lathora said to Liverpool Echo. "When he didn’t respond I instantly started to look up the emergency number for the EU. When that didn’t work I just had to hope the non-emergency would work, it had an option for talking to a real person, and I can’t tell you how quickly I clicked that button." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/12/31/the-best-games-of-the-decade-2010-2019"] BBC reports that Lathora had Jackson's address even though the two never met in person. Police arrived to Jackson's surprised parents at 9:40 p.m., about 40 minutes after Jackson's seizure reportedly started. Jackson's parents told police they hadn't called anyone, but when police explained the call had come from America, Jackson's mother went upstairs to check on her son, finding him "extremely disorientated." Aidan Jackson had previously experienced a seizure in May 2019, according to the BBC. He is currently awaiting a new appointment at a local hospital to address the issue. Jackson's parents expressed gratitude for Lathora's quick action. "We are extremely thankful for what Dia did and shocked that we could be downstairs and not know anything was happening," Ms Jackson told the BBC. "Dia had our address but didn't have any contact numbers, so it was amazing she managed to get help from so far away. I've spoken to her and expressed our thanks - she's just glad she could help. Aidan is a lot better and hopefully everything is OK when he has his appointment at the hospital but he's doing well." Adam Pally on his punchy Mandalorian scene: 'Baby Yoda is a bit of a diva'

by Dan Snierson

Adam Pally punched Baby Yoda. Now he’s ready to tell all.

The Happy Endings vet is heading back to the episodic-comedy world next month with NBC’s Indebted, but viewers just saw him pop up in a buzzed-about scene involving one of the literal small-surprise delights of the holiday season: Baby Yoda. Late in season 1 of Disney+’s Star Wars series The Mandalorian, Pally and Jason Sudeikis pop up as bike scouts for Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito), tasked with delivering Baby Yoda, who’s tucked away in a bag. In the season finale, when Pally’s character sticks a probing finger at the Child, Baby Yoda bites it, prompting Pally’s character to wallop him.

Pally — who is friends with Mandalorian creator Jon Favreau — told reporters at the Television Critics Association’s Winter Press Tour about the offer for the role: Favreau asked if he was interested in a “thing” in which he needed “someone to do ‘something special.'” “That was the headline I got,” he summed up. “So Jason and I talked and were like, ‘Yeah, we really want to be part of it.’ It seemed exciting.”

Especially given his love of Star Wars. How big of a Star Wars fan is Pally? “Huge,” he answered. “I knew what a bike scout was versus a stormtrooper, so that should answer your question.” He adds: “It was very hard to keep it a secret. I told Abby.” (That would be Abby Elliott, his Indebted costar.)

The secretive assignment turned stressful, though, when Pally was informed by the boss just how expensive that Baby Yoda prop is. “I remember the first take that I did when I punched him,” he said. ” They called ‘Cut!’ and Jon, who was watching on a monitor in his office, he came down from this office and said, ‘I just want to let you know that this is the hero Yoda and it costs, like, $5 million. So while I want you to hit it, I just want you to know that.’ Because I think I took a big swing at it. And the next three takes I missed, because I was so nervous.”

Nerves aside, what was it like to work with the little guy? “I gotta tell you, the truth is that Baby Yoda is a bit of a diva,” Pally deadpanned. “He’s constantly vaping.”

Was this Mandalorian moment the realization of a galactic dream come true for Pally? “I want to be in Star Wars,” he responded. “I mean, I’m in it. I can’t play Han. It’s not the dream at all. No, the dream would be to be Han Solo. This was super fun.”

Pally also weighed in on the possibility of a Happy Endings revival, in which ABC has expressed interest. “I don’t want to get anybody’s hopes up, but I know that everybody wants to do it,” he shared. “So right now, they’re trying to find a way to make that happen because there’s a lot of moving parts. And if we were to do it, I think David would want to do it his way.”

Indebted — which also stars Fran Drescher and Steven Weber — debuts Feb. 6. Season 2 of the Mandalorian premieres in the fall.

Morbius: Fans Excited Over Leaked Image of Transformed Jared Leto

by Matt Fowler
A photo leaked Saturday from Sony's upcoming Spider-Man rogues' gallery film Morbius, starring Jared Leto. But unlike the set photo Leto himself posted from last March, this glimpse showed us the actor fully done up as Marvel Comics' Living Vampire - and fan reaction seems to be leaning solidly toward the positive. Some fan responses have been bowled over by the "killer" picture, which has sold them on a movie that they weren't even all that excited about up until this point. Other are cautiously optimistic, commenting that while the image looks good and comic-accurate, we should all wait for the trailer to see how the character looks while moving. Check out the leaked image below in a sampling of some of the responses from fans around the web: And of course, there are already fans chomping at the bit for a Venom and Morbius face-off: Based on the comic book character of the same name, Morbius -- starring Leto, Adria Arjona, and Matt Smith -- follows Dr. Michael Morbius, a respected biochemist suffering from a rare and fatal blood disease. Desperate for a cure, Morbius performs dangerous experiments on himself using vampire bat DNA and inadvertently transforms into a "living vampire." Sony is releasing the movie on July 31, 2020 in the US and UK, and on July 30 in Australia. Later this year, the studio will release its second Marvel Comics movie, Venom 2, on October 2, 2020. For more movie news, director Scott Derrickson has dropped out of Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, Sony may have found a new director for its Uncharted movie, and Nicholas Hoult has joined the next two Mission: Impossible films. RUSH Drummer NEIL PEART Dead At 67

RUSH drummer Neil Peart has died at the age of 67. He passed away on Tuesday in Santa Monica, California after having been diagnosed with brain cancer, according to a statement issued Friday by family spokesperson Elliot Mintz. His death was confirmed by Meg Symsyk, a media spokesperson for the Canadian progressive rock trio. A statement posted on the band's official Twitter page said: "It is with broken hearts and the deepest sadness that we must share the terrible news that on Tuesday our friend, soul brother and bandmate of over 45 years, Neil, has lost his incredibly brave three and a half year battle with brain cancer..." The statement went on to ask for privacy for Peart's family "from friends, fans, and media alike" and requested that mourners make a donation in Peart's name to a cancer research group or charity of their choice." "Rest in peace brother," the band's statement concluded. RUSH had been completely inactive since completing its "R40 Live" tour four years ago. Peart previously said that playing concerts at his age caused too much painful wear and tear on his body and he'd rather call it quits before the performances start declining in quality. His survivors include his wife Carrie and daughter Olivia. He was also the author of numerous books, including a number of memoirs exploring his life and travels. Guitarist Alex Lifeson and bassist/vocalist Geddy Lee have repeatedly said that RUSH will never do a show unless all three musicians agree to take part. They haven't performed as RUSH without Peart since he joined the band in 1974. For first six years of RUSH's existence, John Rutsey was behind the kit and he played on the band's self-titled debut LP. In 1997, Peart and his bandmates became the first rock musicians to be inducted into the Order of Canada. They were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2013.

grown-ish star Luka Sabbat talks season 3, fashion, and macaroni salad

by Kristin Vartan

Luka Sabbat is used to attracting attention. Case in point: The 22-year-old actor and model was scouted for his role on grown-ish by showrunner Kenya Barris in an elevator at the Chateau Marmont.

“I live there, that’s the thing,” Sabbat tells EW, referring to the famed West Hollywood hotel. “So a lot of things in my life revolve around this place.” At the time he met Barris, he wasn’t necessarily looking to act. “I went to acting school and stuff, but when I was in high school and got into fashion, I no longer wanted to be an actor. I was down just because I liked Kenya’s energy. I was like, ‘All right, f— it.’”

Born into a fashion family — his father is a designer, his mother a stylist-turned-chef — Sabbat has racked up 2.1 million followers on Instagram with gender-bending red carpet looks, high-profile collabs with the likes of Roberto Cavalli and Maison Margiela, and eye-catching street-style photos. In addition to his grown-ish role as Zoey Johnson’s (Yara Shahidi) artsy, nonchalant love interest Luca Hall, he appeared opposite Adam Driver and Bill Murray in Jim Jarmusch’s zombie comedy The Dead Don’t Die last summer.

Fresh from hearing that grown-ish was nominated for three NAACP Image Awards, and before the series’ season 3 premiere (Jan. 16 on Freeform), Sabbat hopped on the phone to chat about the parallels between him and his character, what fans can expect from Luca this season, and more.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: How has Luca grown in this upcoming season?
LUKA SABBAT: He’s become more susceptible to his feelings, especially now that he has fully dated Zoey and then become friends with Zoey and all of Zoey’s friends. He’s more open to people and dealing with more things. It was bound to happen.

You seem like the spitting image of your character. How much do you identify with him?
It’s like an alternate TV version of me. I’m calm and stuff, but I’m not like a stoner in real life. I don’t smoke weed . Season 1, I was a lot like my character, but as my character developed they gave him different traits than mine. I do share some things, in terms of energy or whatever the case may be, but I don’t handle things the same way he does emotionally.

What’s something you would have handled differently?
You remember what happened at the end of season 2? Well, I wouldn’t do that. I wouldn’t chase a girl to the airport, you know? I’d text her when she lands, to like f— with her head or something. I might tell her I did , but I didn’t in real life.

When last we left Zoey, she had broken up with Luca and kissed Aaron . What can we expect from this love triangle in season 3?
There’s drama, all right. I mean, there’s a lot going on besides my love triangle. It’s pretty comedic in the sense that and Aaron are such different people. He’s this super-charismatic, outgoing, fun guy. I’m not going to say I’m a recluse, but I’m definitely keen to chill. And Zoey has different moods, and we each fit differently with different moods.

What is it like working with Yara Shahidi, and do you have a favorite moment with her?
I hang out with Yara in real life, so I forget that we’re in a show together. We have a lot of fun cognitive discourses, and we agree and disagree on a lot. We always share music because we have similar but different music tastes. We kick it. The other day we had lunch at the Chateau and hung out, and I saw her at the Golden Globes after-party. It’s just funny: I could not see her for months, and then we see each other and pick up on the last time we talked.

You seem pretty close with your castmates. What was your reaction when you found out your costar Halle Bailey will play Ariel in Disney’s live-action Little Mermaid movie?
That was so fire. I’m so proud of her. It’s insane. I mean, how else am I supposed to feel about that?

Hold up, your character says “that is so fire” all the time on grown-ish. So you say that in real life too?
Yeah, I think that’s why they use it in the show. I said it at a table read for season 1, and they wrote it in the script.

You’re a trendsetter on and off screen. What can we expect from Luca’s style this season, and how much of a hand do you have in the looks?
He loves robes, like kimonos and loose pants. He really has some chill s— in season 3. They always give me options. I come in pick what I like and don’t like, then they pair some s—, and then I’ll be like, “No, I’m going to put it with that.” But also there’s certain colors you have to wear because if too many characters wear the same color, it looks weird on screen. It’s not all about me.

You’re always gender-bending your style: wearing eye makeup, skirts, etc. What does masculinity mean to you in 2020?
It’s as far as you’re comfortable. Some people are not down to wear makeup. Some people are not down to do a lot of things, and that doesn’t make them any less masculine or any more masculine. There are definitely people who have very fragile masculinity, but that’s just probably because they’re insecure, but I don’t know. I can’t speak for 4 billion men. I know what I like, so I could kind of do whatever and still be able to sleep at night.

What is something a lot of your fans don’t know about you?
Well, I like Shrek 2 on DVD. Have you ever seen the DVD version?

Yeah, I love Shrek 2 on DVD, especially the American Idol parody they do at the end of the movie.
Yeah, the “Far, Far Away Idol!” It’s so good. I just love Shrek 2 on DVD.

I once read that Zendaya’s idea of self-care is watching Harry Potter every day, so I’m just now imagining you watching Shrek 2 every day and being like, “Just need some self-care!”
I also like really spicy food.

Do you like Tapatio? It’s good on everything, including spaghetti.
I love Tapatio. You put it on your spaghetti? Do you like macaroni salad, and if so, do you eat it hot or cold?

Yes I do, and I eat it cold.
Okay, so what makes macaroni salad, salad?

It’s cold.
But if you make a macaroni salad hot, is it just a pasta dish?

Yes, do you feel otherwise?
I don’t know how I feel about it, but I was just asking.

Is this the type of stuff that you debate about with Yara?
Yeah, just weird questions.

New Amsterdam renewed for three more seasons

by Dan Snierson

The doctors will be in for a very long time.

NBC has ordered not one but three more seasons of New Amsterdam, the network announced on Saturday at the Television Critics Association’s Winter Press Tour. That will take the high-rated medical drama through the 2022-2023 season. A similar mega-renewal was given by NBC to another one of its powerhouse dramas, This Is Us, last year.

The medical drama has been drawing almost 10 million viewers in live+7 ratings while notching a 1.7 in the key 18-to-49-year-old demo. The David Schulner-created series — whose cast includes Ryan Eggold, Janet Montgomery, Freema Agyeman, Jocko Sims, with Tyler Labine and Anupam Kher — launched strongly out of the gate in the fall of 2018.

The season 2 fall finale, which aired in November, left viewers on a cliffhanger as prisoners from Rikers Island were posing a violent threat at New Amsterdam. The show returns for the second half of the season on Jan. 14.

Never run out of loo roll again, with the wackiest CES gadget of all

by Chris Smith
charmin rollbot

We’ve all been there, haven’t we? After enjoying a nice relaxing number two we’ve made that glance over to the loo roll holder to see the tiniest scraps of paper clinging to that cardboard grey tube.

In this situation, our minds instantly go to survival mode. Shall we sacrifice a sock for the cause? Attempt to stealthily waddle to the downstairs bathroom? Or – shamefully – call on a loved one to fetch you a new roll.

Well, if the good folks at US bog roll purveyor Charmin has its way, that dilemma – and poop anxiety in general – will become a thing of the past.

The Charmin RollBot joins the annals (correct spelling) of weird and wonderful CES gadgets can be summoned to bring you a fresh roll whenever disaster strikes, via a quick tap of the smartphone application.

Related: CES 2020 – our full coverage

The small, two-wheeled robot is powered by Bluetooth and simply carries the fresh roll on top. It’s also got a friendly face to “provide emotional support in your moment of need,” Charmin says.

“So you’re on the commode, you look over, oh no, somebody didn’t change the roll. Hello? Nobody home,” Gregg Weaver, an R&D pro at Charmin’s parent company Procter & Gamble, told NPR.

“This builds on our mission to always bring better bathroom experiences to unexpected places and showcases our relentless obsession with helping people ‘Enjoy the Go,'” another spokesperson told CNN.

Naturally, the company isn’t actually planning to sell this invention, although it could potentially be quite useful. Another item in the company’s GoLab that could aid some more odorous bathroom buddies is the SmellSense, which will inform loo visitors when their stench is too hideous to comprehend, and again when it has dissipated and is suitable for another human to enter the premises without a gas mask.

There’s also a VR experience called V.I.Pee, which will help people escape the nastiness of a portapotty by transporting them to another location.

It has computer vision aided cooking...

  • GE Appliances' Kitchen Hub has cameras inside it to help you cook better.
  • You can also watch Netflix on it.

The GE Appliances Kitchen Hub, a microwave with a 27-inch smart touch screen, might be the most CES thing we've ever seen.

The Kitchen Hub is a first-of-its-kind, interactive smart kitchen hub with a built-in microwave. It has integrated AI-powered computer vision technology, that can help you plan and make meals, hopefully saving on waste, which reportedly costs US families $800 a year. A press release for the Kitchen Hub states:

The next-gen Kitchen Hub from GE Appliances is a 27-inch smart touch screen, 1.9 cubic foot microwave and ventilation combo designed to easily fit in the space above the range. Consumers can use cameras to interact with friends and family, snap and share their culinary masterpieces, and even determine when their meals are done while viewing the inside of the oven from their couch. And if cooking isn't entertaining enough, the Kitchen Hub Micro provides access to popular apps, such as Netflix and Spotify. The addition of the microwave into the next gen Kitchen Hub allows the user a full-service kitchen experience.

The Kitchen Hub has built-in Google Assistant support for creating grocery lists, planning meals, internet searching, and temperature control. It also has thousands of recipes through SideChef, and live video chat functionality with multiple camera angles. It sits above your range, and even have an overhead cooktop-facing camera for taking pictures of your meals, from the oven to Instagram in record time. And yes, there's a camera inside the oven so you can check on your food from anywhere in the house.

So there you have it, a 27-inch touch screen microwave with Netflix. What a time to be alive. For more information on GE Appliances, and the Kitchen Hub, check out their website!

The CW renews The Flash, Riverdale, Supergirl, Legacies, Nancy Drew, and 8 other series

by Sydney Bucksbaum

The CW has renewed a whopping 13 returning series for the 2020-2021 TV season.

On Tuesday, the network announced that all of its current series have been granted early renewals, including remaining Arrowverse series The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, Black Lightning, and new addition Batwoman, plus Riverdale, The Vampire Diaries spinoff Legacies, Dynasty, All American, Charmed, Roswell, New Mexico, In the Dark, and new series Nancy Drew. Plus, a month ahead of its midseason premiere, Riverdale spinoff Katy Keene has received an order for 13 additional scripts.

“These early orders for next season give our production teams a head start in plotting out story arcs and a jump on hiring staff, and this also provides us with a strong foundation of established, fan-favorite CW shows to build on for next season,” CW boss Mark Pedowitz said in a statement. “We’ve been thrilled with the creative direction of all three new series, and even though we are in the very early stages of our new full stack streaming strategy, which allows viewers to catch up on our new shows from the beginning, we’re already seeing incredibly positive results from our multiplatform viewership for Nancy Drew and Batwoman.”

This is a strong show of support from The CW for all its current series as the network is entering a new chapter without many of its fan-favorite shows. Supernatural, flagship Arrowverse series Arrow, and The 100 are all ending this season, and iZombie and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend aired their final seasons in 2019.

The Flash will return for season 7, Legends of Tomorrow and Supergirl will return for season 6, Riverdale will return for season 5, Black Lightning and Dynasty will return for season 4, Legacies, Roswell, New Mexico, Charmed, All American, and In the Dark will return for season 3, and Batwoman and Nancy Drew will return for season 2 with specific premiere dates to be announced at a later time. The midseason debut of new Archie Comics series Katy Keene airs Feb. 6 at 8 p.m. on The CW.

Lenovo's ThinkBook Plus is a laptop that doubles as a Kindle

It wouldn't be CES if Lenovo didn't have a bevy of new laptops to announce, but I can't say we saw the company's new ThinkBook Plus coming. On one level, it's pretty prosaic -- it's available with a 13.3-inch matte, full HD IPS display, one USB-C...

There’s a tiny, jealous robot roaming the floor of CES – and it wants to be your friend

by Hannah Davies
Lovot

There’s a tiny, furry robot in Las Vegas built specifically to love you – and it’ll stop at nothing to get your attention.

Sure, it sounds like the plot of a particularly disturbing Black Mirror episode but Lovots are real and they’re a lot less scary than they sound. Sort of.

The brainchild of Japanese robotics company Groove X, Lovots are sweet, cuddly robots that gravitate toward the people they like most.

Lovot

Officially, Lovots are powered by love, but the robots are also packed with 10 plus CPU cores, 20 plus MCUs and at least 50 sensors, accumulating in something Groove X calls “Emotional Robotics” – tech developed “to make the human power to love, even stronger”.

The sensor horn atop a Lovot’s head allows the robot to scan its surroundings. It’s packed with a luminosity sensor, a camera and a mic to listen and respond to your voice as well as a thermal camera to distinguish human beings from objects and to weave their way in and out of obstacles.

Related: CES 2020

Lovot

The horn also doubles as a security camera, sending a feed directly to your phone so you can check in on your home when you’re out and about.

There’s plenty to fawn over from the laugh you’ll hear when you tickle your Lovot to the surprise and happiness they exhibit when you touch them or pick them up.

In fact, the robot is quite literally designed to awaken the parental instincts in you, making you want to interact with your Lovot even more.

But there is a slightly darker side to it all, as demonstrated by this terrifying promotional image. If you hug one Lovot, another Lovot might get jealous and hold its arms out for a hug too.

Lovot

Lovots will also love to stare at you until you give them attention. “No matter how long it takes”.

Lovot

But they’re so cute that we’re kind of okay with all that.

Lovots are the perfect companion for anyone looking for a pet they won’t need to worry about feeding, though acquiring your own personal robot certainly isn’t cheap, even in 2020.

One Lovot will set you back 299,800 yen – that’s just over £2,000 here in the UK – along with a 8,980 yen monthly fee. And that isn’t even considering the completely necessary tiny matching clothes you can buy to dress up your Lovot.
