Rob Ford Is Sorry For Appearing On Jimmy Kimmel Live A Day Early

For Eric.
And I believe Jimmy said, "Rob Ford and Gonzo from the Muppets will be here."
That sounds interesting.

Rob Ford is scheduled to appear on tonight’s Jimmy Kimmel Live—not that Ford would know when “tonight” is, exactly. In a gag skit mocking Ford’s habit of not being aware of reality, the embattled Toronto mayor appeared a day early on Kimmel’s show, bursting through a pair of double doors, Kool-Aid Man-style, after Kimmel teased Ford’s Monday segment.

Convicted cop killer sentenced to death - pix & audio

"You are a pathetic coward who deserves nothing but pain, torture and hell." Those words from the widow of the fallen Austin Police officer to the man convicted of killing him, Amy Padron to Brandon Montgomery Daniel.

(Mouse hover for photo captions)

Late Friday night, Daniel was sentenced to death by lethal injection for shooting Officer Jaime Padron in the neck on April 6, 2012, at the Tech Ridge Walmart.

"Olivia and Ariana were ten and six years old when you murdered their father," Amy Padron said. She said on April 5, 2012, she, Jaime and the girls had a family dinner that night. Tearfully, Mrs. Padron says she and Jaime made Easter plans together, and then he left for work.

Mrs. Padron went on.

"In the very early hours of April 6, 2012, I received a knock on my front door and it was Chief [Art] Acevedo. As a peace officer, I knew this wasn't good. I was just hoping Jaime was just hurt really bad and I could go see him. Chief Acevedo was there to tell me the father of my children was murdered," she said. "I tried calling Jaime's cell phone and of course, he did not answer. Then I realized I had to wake up a ten-year-old and our six-year-old and tell them their daddy was dead. How in the HELL... do I tell two little girls that their daddy is dead? I woke up them up, and they knew something was wrong by looking at me. 'What's wrong, Momma?' And I told them a bad guy got Daddy. I told them a bad guy killed Daddy," she said from the witness stand, sometimes barely able to speak.

Mrs. Padron had more to say.

"Over the next few weeks, months, we were in shock and disbelief. A nightmare they cannot imagine. Our girls struggled without their Daddy. The loss of their Daddy is huge. They go to counseling every week. You did not kill all of Jaime. Parts of him live in him," she said, with a voice turning from sadness to anger and hostility.

After nearly two years of thinking about what she would say to Brandon Daniel, Mrs. Padron clearly had more to say to him.

"After this trial, you will be forgotten and no one will care what happens to you," she went on. "Jaime will forever be remembered through the citizens of this country and the citizens of this state. He will be remembered by his family and friends and most importantly, he will always be remembered daily by our daughters. Jaime was loved, and the two most important people he loved were Ariana and Olivia."

"I want to thank the court and justice system for doing the right thing," said Johnny Padron, Jaime's brother. "I didn't even want to come up here. I didn't want to look at you. I respect our courts, so I won't speak my mind. But I do want to tell you, you're a coward and I hope you rot in hell. Thank you."

"Please don't carry this burden on your shoulders," Linda Diaz, Jaime Padron's sister said. "I just want to thank the jury, the judge and the court. You left your families, your jobs and your lives. Thank you for deliberating as long as you did. That tells us that you paid attention to everything that was in front of you. You were following the instructions that were given." Then, Ms. Diaz turned her attention to Daniel. "You are a monster. You may have ripped [Jaime] out of our lives, but let me tell you something. His spirit lives on. It's alive. It's alive in the hearts of every law enforcement officer in this room. (unintelligible) You don't get to come to the great state of Texas and kill a law enforcement officer and get away with it. I hope the rest of your life you think about what you did, and turn your life around." Ms. Diaz added, "I don't know which consequence for you, I don't know which one I wanted."

Judge Brenda Kennedy had this to say as she addressed Daniel, immediately upon reading the jury's sentence of death by lethal injection.

"Under the Texas law, the judgment and conviction and sentence of death is mandated by the answers the jury has given and will be subject to automatic review and appeal by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals. This is mandated by Texas law, and their appeal has priority over all other types of cases that will be pending," Judge Kennedy said.

"Brandon, my name's Matt," San Angelo Police officer Matt Baldwin said, addressing Daniel in the courtroom. "On April 6, 2012, you killed my friend. To clarify that, you killed my brother. It's a funny thing, man. I don't hate you for that, but I do hate what you did. I'm very pleased that there is justice. That's an important thing. I didn't plan to come up here this evening, but the idea was presented to me and this is how I made my decision. There have been many times since Jaime was killed that I've asked what would Jaime do for me? That's why I'm up here. There are so many things you took away. I don't know why you did it. I really don't care, man. I just want you to know there's so many lives you destroyed by what you did. Not just mine. So many lives you changed forever. That's evidenced here. There's no way to fix it. Not even this," he said.

At 11:51 p.m., Judge Kennedy remanded Daniel to the custody of the Travis County Sheriff's Department for a transfer to the Texas Dept. of Criminal Justice. Daniel submitted his fingerprints and was escored by a bailiff out of the courtroom.

Cold Guy Uses A Sweater To Turn Himself Into A Turkey

Japan has had its share of cold weather this year, but that doesn’t mean everyone should run out and buy a pile of sweaters. Blogger Mr. Sebuyama suggests another approach: wear a single sweater and nothing else. If you put your feet in the sleeves and tuck into yourself, you can cover your most of your body with a sweater and also look like a turkey. I don’t even have the words.

He wore the sweater inside and even ventured outdoors in bare feet in the snow. It just proves the theory that yes, you can and will see everything on the internet.

The University of Texas to sell alcohol at some sports events

Texas will begin selling beer and wine at some athletic events, starting Friday at the Texas softball invitational tournament.  Texas has long banned alcohol sales at athletic events. New men's athletic director Steve Patterson said the school will sell beer and win at the final men's and women's basketball games, softball, baseball and the Texas Relays track event.  Alcohol sales could expand to football in the fall, although the April 19 spring scrimmage at Royal-Memorial Stadium will not be included. Texas said the athletic department will consult with university police, state officials and the school's concessions contractor to evaluate safety and determine whether alcohol sales will be expanded.

The Heavy Metal TV series to bring scifi sex 'n violence to the U.S.

by Rob Bricken
Darendukes

I'm definitely going to watch this.

From Wikipedia:
"As an anthology series, each episode is a self-contained science-fiction story taking place in a different world, with different characters played by a different cast and adapted from a story previously published in the Métal Hurlant magazine. However the show also proposes that all the stories are linked together by an asteroid, called the "Métal Hurlant", which is passing close to the planet where the episode's story is taking place."

Bonus: Original dialogue/audio is in English.

With its second season almost wrapped, the 2012 French TV series Metal Hurlant Chronicles — based on the adult scifi/fantasy magazine we know as Heavy Metal — will finally premiere on the Syfy Channel this April. There's slave girls, spaceships, and guys with swords trying to take out giant robots. Interested?

San Antonio judge rules Texas ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional

A federal judge has struck down Texas' ban on gay marriage, but is leaving it in place pending a ruling by an appeals court later this year.

Judge Orlando Garcia issued a preliminary injunction on the ban Wednesday, then suspended his ruling. Two gay couples had challenged the state's constitutional amendment and a longstanding law banning gay marriage.

Under federal court rules, a judge may suspend a law if he or she believes the plaintiffs have a strong case and will suffer if the law is enforced.   Garcia said his injunction against Texas enforcing its ban will take effect once an appeals court has a chance to rule on the issue.   The ruling is the latest in a recent series of victories for gay rights activists.

One of the couples, Nicole Dimetman and Cleopatra De Leon of Austin, are happy with the news.  "Today we've taken a great step towards justice for our family. We are thrilled with the ruling and remain hopeful that this matter will continue to move quickly through the courts. Ultimately, the repeal of Texas’ ban will mean that our son will never know how this denial of equal protections demeaned our family and belittled his parents' relationship. We look forward to the day when, surrounded by friends and family, we can renew our vows in our home state of Texas."

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott released the following statement after the ruling:

“This is an issue on which there are good, well-meaning people on both sides. And, as the lower court acknowledged today, it’s an issue that will ultimately be resolved by a higher court. Texas will begin that process by appealing today’s ruling to the Fifth Circuit. Because the judge has stayed his own decision, his ruling has no immediate practical effect. Instead, the ultimate decision about Texas law will be made by the Court of Appeals or the U.S. Supreme Court.

“The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled over and over again that States have the authority to define and regulate marriage. The Texas Constitution defines marriage as between one man and one woman. If the Fifth Circuit honors those precedents, then today’s decision should be overturned and the Texas Constitution will be upheld.”
