Awarded Contemporary Home With Beautiful Garden in Toronto, Canada
The Toronto Residence designed by Belzberg Architecture received the 2013 Ontario Association of Architects Design Excellence award. Very modern, and breezy, the stratified home showcases different types of materials for each of its layer, creating a very interesting contrast (plasters blends with zinc cladding, wood and stones). The house takes advantage of the natural rich surroundings. The flawless transition between environments is emphasised through floor-to-ceiling windows and open spaces. “Large portions of glazing along with clean lines and simple volumetric proportions underscore the client’s interest in creating a space with an effortless flow between interior and exterior; in a climate that is not always conducive to this type of habitation.”
The home with its gorgeous garden inspires relaxation. There’s a terrace where you can just sit with your mug in the morning, drinking your coffee while planning your day. Private, yet airy, the Toronto Residence is the type of home that combines perfectly nature and the cozy home ambience while revealing sharp and pleasant contemporary notes. The interior is characterised by a graceful décor, with a complex wooden staircase serving as a main attraction point.

New Ultra-Light Nanotube Aerogels Could Clean Up Oil Spills
Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania have created low-density, super-strong aerogels made of carbon nanotubes that could be key to cleaning up oil spills. The new material is lighter than air but can absorb 900 times its own weight. It combines the strength and ultra-light, heat-insulating properties of aerogels with the electrical conductivity of nanotubes.

Kokeshi Matches
Kokeshi Match started as a product of pure creativity. In 1994, as a part of a group exhibition, Kumi Hirasaka drew faces of KOKESHI (traditional Japanese wooden dolls) on each match by hand. In 2000, Kokeshi Matches are mass produced and later expanded into various designs such as chicks, piggies, cats and cranes. Check them out below!

LG is rumored to be creating a washing machine that doesn’t use water. Reports indicate that the South Korean firm plans to focus on next-generation smart appliances next year, and it’s already working on several cutting-edge designs. According to Engadget, the company remains tight-lipped about the new washing machine project—currently in the early stages of development—and LG has not yet confirmed if the appliance will be completely waterless, or “virtually waterless.”

The beauty in Judith Braun’s work is that she uses her fingers to paint beautifully. I thought her symmetrical pieces are the most beautiful, and hardest to create. I can only imagine the self-restraint she had – if it were me I’d get all giddy (and a bit mad with anticipation) at the thought of having a tub of charcoal powder and a clean white wall at my disposal.
Have a lovely weekend folks!

Sound of Oblivion
I love hearing about sound effects in films and the work of foley artists, soundtrack composers, and sound designers. Back in 1997, I interviewed David Cronenberg for the bOING bOING print 'zine, and we mostly talked about the squishy oozy sounds he likes to use in his movies. Here's an excellent SoundWorks Collection interview with Oblivion director Joe Kosinski and the sound of his new movie. Some of his collaborates included composer Joseph Trapanese, Anthony Gonzalez (M83), re-recording mixer Gary Rizzo, and re-recording mixer Juan Peralta.

Eyescream
I scream. You scream. We all scream for ....eyescream? A self service shop in Barcelona selling little monster bowls of Taiwanese shaved ice cream. From product design to branding, graphics and packaging all the way to interior design Estudio m Barcelona has taken what is normally an amorphous mass of sweet goop and introduced a fun taste and visual feast to the passing customers. How cool (pun intended) are those ice cream monsters with their sugar eyes?
