An Old Church Becomes a Colorful Skateboarder’s Heaven

by Caroline Williamson

An Old Church Becomes a Colorful Skateboarder’s Heaven

What happens when you hand over a 100-year old church to an artist and give them free rein? A colorful indoor skate park, named La Iglesia Skate is born. Located in the Spanish municipality of Llanera, Kaos Temple, as it’s known, has become a destination for skateboarders around the world with its one-of-a-kind interior painted by artist Okuda San Miguel.

Kaos-Temple-Skate-Church-Okuda-San-Miguel-2

The church had been purchased in recent years by a collective known as the Church Brigade and when they acquired it, it was in dire condition. They launched an online crowd funding campaign to raise money in hopes of rehabilitating it and turning it into a skate park and cultural destination.

Kaos-Temple-Skate-Church-Okuda-San-Miguel-3

Madrid-based street artist Okuda San Miguel visited the church in late 2014 and was impressed with what they’d done with the space. He visualized a concept for the space that included painting the walls and ceilings, which displays a recurring figure, his iconic Kaos Star. The star is a colorful and asymmetric compass that’s meant to say it doesn’t matter where you are or what you’re doing, just to follow your own direction to reach your goals. That led to the project being called, Kaos Temple.

Over the course of seven days, the artist (like a modern Michelangelo!) completed the project and The Skate Church was opened on December 10th. The refreshed space is like a kaleidoscope of colors that bring new life to the once rundown structure.

La Iglesia Skate was produced by Ink and Movement and Iniciativas Habitat, in collaboration with Church Brigade. The project was sponsored by Red Bull, as well as Miller Division, Montana Colors, and Socketines.

Encryption isn’t at stake, the FBI knows Apple already has the desired key

by Peter Bright

fairly long...but interesting

(credit: flattop341)

Apple has been served with a court order at the FBI's request, demanding that it assist the government agency with unlocking an iPhone 5C that was used by Syed Rizwan Farook. Farook and his wife, Tashfeen Malik, killed 14 and injured 24 in an attack in San Bernardino, California on December 2, 2015.

In response, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that the FBI was demanding the equivalent of a backdoor and that complying with the FBI's demand would undermine the security of all iPhones.

Whether you call it a "backdoor" or not, it's important to recognize that the ordered changes to the iPhone operating system would not circumvent the core of the iPhone's encryption. The court isn't asking Apple to defeat the encryption in any way. Nor does the court require Apple to create a vulnerability that would jeopardize the security of any other phone. Rather, it's asking Apple to do the one thing that Apple alone can do: use the iPhone's built-in method of installing firmware written by Apple.

A New Eichler Neighborhood is Born in Palm Springs

by Jaime Derringer

A New Eichler Neighborhood is Born in Palm Springs

A few years ago we announced the exciting news that KUD Properties was bringing the Eichler back. They began building new Eichler homes in an exclusive Palm Springs neighborhood. Well, they’ve just completed their third Eichler home and we’re super excited to share it with you here, and to be checking it out this weekend in person at Palm Springs Modernism Week.

The first Eichler home (pictured above) sold on the first day it was on the market… I guess there’s a demand :) and the second and third Eichlers are now available through KUD Properties. Let’s take a peek at all three, starting with some more photos of Desert Eichler 1:

A Set of Wrenches that Focus on Simplicity

for the hipster who likes to carry his tools with him...

A Set of Wrenches that Focus on Simplicity

For those of us that pay extra attention to aesthetics right down to our tools, schneider sarto has come out with a set of wrenches that will make everyone happy. Wrench Aesthetics knocks it back down to basics and stripped the shape of a typical wrench down to a simple bar. The width and thickness are properly proportioned to feel good in the hand, while also being the perfect size to slip into a pocket or a bag.

wrench-aesthetics-schneider-sarto-1

The hexagonal shape of the bolt is visually connected with the metric size of each of the wrenches and is show in numerals: 10 = X, 11 = XI, 12 = XII, 13 = XIII, 14 = XIV, 15 = XV.

wrench-aesthetics-schneider-sarto-2

Each wrench is made of solid 304 2B 5mm stainless steel with laser engraved numerals. While they aren’t made to replace heavy duty tools, they’re great for regular household fixes.

They’re currently raising funds on Indiegogo if you’re interested.

SCHMINKTÄNK: A Space Saving, Vanity/Bar Cabinet

Whether you’re looking for a vanity or a bar, AMBIVALENZ might just have the answer with their latest piece in the FLÄPPS line, the SCHMINKTÄNK. The space saving, wall-mounted piece takes up very little room (it’s 40 x 12 x 40 cm), yet it adds quite a bit of function to whatever room you place it in. The cabinet has a flat surface that pops down so you have a place to work, and it also has a mirror, storage, and lighting.

Flaepps-Schminktaenk-AMBIVALENZ-vanity-2

You can use it as a place to put your makeup on, as a mini bar, a medicine cabinet, or a little desk. Close it up and it just looks like a simple cabinet on the wall.

proof that the tiny rodent from the earlier share is a murderer.

ultrafacts:

The Grasshopper mouse is a carnivorous rodent, dining on grasshoppers, worms, scorpions, snakes, and even other mice. It also stalks its prey in the manner of a cat, sneaking up quietly. The grasshopper mouse is known to be immune to various venoms released by its prey.

Most mammals, humans included, writhe in pain in response to a venomous sting from a scorpion. Not so the grasshopper mouse. The scorpion’s desert-dwelling cohabitant seems unperturbed by multiple stings and actually preys on the scorpions. Ashlee Rowe, formerly of the University of Texas at Austin, US, and now at Michigan State University, East Lansing, US, and her colleagues discovered how an evolutionary adaptation in the rodents’ Nav1.8 voltage-gated sodium channel neutralizes the scorpion’s bite by turning the normally painful toxin into an analgesic. The report, which appeared October 25 in Science, unmasks new possibilities for the sodium channel Nav1.8 as a target for potential pain treatments.

Painting With Thread: New Work by Cayce Zavaglia

by David Behringer

at first: very cool then scroll down surprise: creepy

Painting With Thread: New Work by Cayce Zavaglia

Cayce Zavaglia’s embroidered portraits are unbelievable. Four years ago, Design Milk featured her photorealistic thread portraits, and now she’s taken her process and skills to a WHOLE new level: the reverse.

Sophie

Sophie

Visitors who walk too quickly through her current exhibition at Lyons Weir Gallery might miss the basic fact that all these images are sewn – not painted.

Half of the show features Cayce’s painstaking embroidery work. As in her previous exhibition, a couple portraits use a thicker “crewel wool” thread (above), but newer smaller works push the level of detail higher using much thinner thread (below): a one ply cotton, silk and wool thread.

Uncle Stevie

Uncle Stevie

Uncle Stevie (detail)

Uncle Stevie (detail)

Visitors with less than 20/20 eyesight should bring a magnifying glass (seriously) to catch the complex network of colored thread combinations and directions that create these moving portraits of her friends and family.

Martina

Martina

Verso detail: Martina

Verso detail: Martina

A few years ago Cayce “discovered” the back of her work – a chaotic network of thread that forms as she works on the front. This show features the BACK side (or “verso”) to a greater degree, recognizing the beauty of these happy accidents and the metaphor of our private messy inner selves.

Here’s a hot tip: one of the thread portraits is in the middle of the room to allow visitors to view either side, but the gallery staff will gladly pull any work off the wall to show you the back! If they’re busy, just pull up the images on your iPad while you’re there to compare.

This is where it gets crazy – and doubly reversed. Cayce became so intrigued with the unseen reverse side of the thread portraits that she decided to create detailed PAINTINGS of the chaotic network of thread, shifting from using thread to mimic paint, to paint that looks like thread!

Teo Verso

The show features a number of small gouache paintings (above), and two MASSIVE acrylic paintings that enlarge the thread strands to Jackson Pollock scale.

Greg Sr. Verso Painting

I love the idea of a “double portrait” within one object, but the exhibition itself captures her own split-creative-personality. Zavaglia has a superhuman obsession with precision and detail in the original portrait and yet a clear love of the beauty in uncontrolled chaos in the “verso”, to such a degree that she spends ANOTHER period of countless hours studying and painting that chaos… with a superhuman level of precision and detail.  I can’t wait to see what she does next.
