Restaurants have to strike a fine balance between eerily quiet and shouting-across-the-table loud. At Oakland's Oliveto, the high-tech solution is a set of mics, speakers, and sound-absorbing panels that constantly record, modify, and pipe back the ideal background noise—essentially real-time Photoshop for sound.

Discarded Leather Gets New Life in Structural Skin
PrettocraigThis is a bit too Hannibal Lecter for me.
Despite being one of the most commonly used materials in the world, leather production is still an extremely inefficient process due to its origins. In efforts to make leather more sustainable, Spanish designer Jorge Penadés created a new method of production to revitalize discarded leather waste from factories.
Structural Skin is a capsule collection created from this new material that is made completely of discarded leather waste, including any binder or resin used during production.
Structural Skin consists of a hanger and side table, both made completely of leather offcuts, giving new life to what was once considered waste. Jorge is currently contemplating new ways of creating different monochromes and color mixes for different aesthetics.

An Outdoor Ping Pong Table for Design Lovers
Prettocraig@dani for the courtyard...or our patio for that matter
Ping Pong has been making a steady comeback in the last decade and Australia-based POPP, Public Ping Pong Worldwide, is making it even easier to play. The company makes free-to-use, permanent ping pong tables for parks and open spaces around Australia. The tables, like The Ephemeralist, is an outdoor table for the minimalist.

Meet the 'Real-Life Q' Who Built Secret Spy Gadgets for a Living
Prettocraig@dani

I grew up watching James Bond films. My favorite part was always the same: the part where "Q" would outfit our hero with the latest in spy technology. Ralph Osterhout also grew up loving Bond movies too — but he took it to the next level. He spent his life building real spy gadgets, for secret agents in the field.

Pon: A Punctureless Push Pin
Prettocraigwell it took a long time for someone to invent that
You know how annoying it is when you want to pin up a photo or a poster on your wall but you don’t want to ruin it by putting a hole in it? Mark Weiser designed Pon as an alternative and it’s pretty clever.
Pon takes the puncture out of the push pin and saves your sacred items from the usual holes that hanging brings. The circular coil lets you slide your item in for easy hanging. The right amount of spirals means it fully grips without crumpling your object.
The maker of Pon successfully reached their funding goal on Kickstarter, which hopefully means they’ll find their way on the market very soon.

Prettocraigsharing for the awesome picture

It's tempting to think of Microsoft as some aging dinosaur. But it's wrong. Change has been building for almost a year now. Yes Windows 8 was a mess, and the Xbox One's early days were embarrassing, but Microsoft's been sharpening its game with impressive speed. And now it is once again , hands down, the most exciting company in tech.

Ribbon Chapel by Hiroshi Nakamura & NAP
This is a wedding chapel unlike any other wedding chapel out there. Located in the garden of a resort hotel in Onomichi, Hiroshima, Japan, the freestanding Ribbon Chapel boasts panoramic views of the Inland Sea, which can be viewed from its two spiral stairways that are intertwined. Hiroshi Nakamura, of NAP Architects, designed the spiraling structure with two stairways to help make the volume more structurally sound.
The two ribboning forms seamlessly join together, just like the two lives getting married, after going through twists and turns, before uniting together as one at the very top.
Centered at the core of the structure is the light-filled chapel that’s hugged tightly by the smooth spirals on the exterior.
There’s a summit at the top for the couple to meet.
The stairways widen at points to help protect the chapel from the sun.
The chapel is set up with a particular route in mind – the bride walks down the aisle with her father and after the ceremony, the aisle becomes the departure route for the bride and groom. The bride and groom then climb the stairs to meet at the top where they are to ask heaven’s permission to join as one. They then walk down the stairs together.

Pouring paint on top of paint creates mind melting art

Here's a nice way to have fun without doing drugs: pour different colors of paint on top of other colors of paint on top of a wooden block. The layers of paint will stack on top of each other and the colors will expand and you'll get a super psychedelic art piece that looks like the world has melted down.

Incredible Designer Suites at the Ice Hotel
Prettocraigsharing as a follow up to the previous ice hotel comments...this is unreal
This is literally the coolest hotel ever.

ART SUITE: 7 , 5 ° Rø by Wolfgang-A. Lüchow, Sebastian Andreas Scheller, Anja Kilian, Germany. Photo: Paulina Holmgren
Every year, 50,000 plus visitors flock to ICEHOTEL, a hotel in Jukkasjärvi, a small village in Northern Sweden. Not only is this hotel made of ice, it transforms itself every year with a new design theme.
This year marks its 25th anniversary, where different designers came to help sculpt each room. Not only is each room different, there’s also an ice bar, church, and pillar hall.

During March and April, ice is harvested from Torne River and then stored until November and December, when designers from around the world come to help take part in the artistic construction that is ICEHOTEL. The hotel lasts from December to mid-April, then slowly melts back into the Torne River. Pretty much a circle of life (or ice?). We’d love to get the chance to stay in one of these incredible rooms.
Which one is your favorite?
