Noseless Monkey That Sneezes Is Among 211 New Species Found In The Himalayas

by Jason Wells

A fish that can breathe air and live on land for four days, a noseless monkey that sneezes when it rains, and a bejeweled-like viper — all newly discovered species that are adding to what's known of that fantastical biodiversity in the Himalayas.

The World Wildlife Fund this week announced the new finds that were among a "treasure trove" of more than 200 other species discovered over the past few years in the Eastern Himalayas. All told, scientists from multiple organizations discovered 133 plants, 39 invertebrates, 26 fish, 10 amphibians, one reptile, one bird, and one mammal. They were introduced in a new report released this week, "Hidden Himalayas: Asia’s Wonderland."

"I am excited that the region – home to a staggering number of species including some of the most charismatic fauna – continues to surprise the world with the nature and pace of species discovery,” Ravi Singh, chief executive of WWF-India and chairman of the WWF Living Himalayas Initiative, said in a statement.

Here's a look at some of the more fascinating discoveries listed in the report:

WWF

WWF

The "Sneezing Monkey"

Described in the report as one of the most "highly significant and exciting large mammal finds in recent years," meet the Myanmar snub-nosed monkey, or as scientists initially nicknamed him, "Snubby."

Hunters in Myanmar’s remote Kachin state on the border with China first informed scientists of the odd-looking black-and-white primate in early 2010.

According to the WWF, locals in the remote, mountainous region claim the monkey is easiest to find in the rain because they often get rainwater in their upturned noses, causing them to sneeze. To get around the intrusion, snub-nosed monkeys sit with their heads tucked between their knees until the storm passes.

A team of conservationists from Fauna & Flora International, Nature Conservation Association, and People Resources and Conservation Foundation were able to find the monkeys and produce the first known photographs using camera traps.

Little is known about the monkey’s behavior in the wild, including its distribution range, the WWF said.

WWF

Blue dwarf "walking" snakehead fish

The Channa andrao species, discovered in the Lefraguri swamp in West Bengal, gets its "snake" namesake in part for its ability to wriggle its way up to a quarter mile on wet land.

It can do this because it has the ability to breathe atmospheric air and survive on land up to four days. But don't worry, according to the WWF, the typically solitary predators prefer to attack from below, and survive on a diet of smaller fish and invertebrates.

The fish, less than 1 inch long, are used in aquaculture, including rice-fish farming.

Himalayan lance-headed pit viper

The pattern-covered viper, which can grow to more than 4 feet long, is a new addition to
the Asian pit viper genus Trimeresurus. Distinguishable by its red, yellow, and orange coloring and bands, the WWF says the venomous viper predominately inhabits trees feeding on rodents, lizards, amphibians, and birds.

“Dracula minnow”

At roughly a half-inch long, these tiny fish grabbed scientists' attention for being mostly translucent and for their "fangs," which the WWF said appear to be part of their skeleton.

Bompu Litter Frog

With its striking blue eyes, the Bompu Litter Frog Leptobrachium were discovered in heavy rains in the Eaglenest wildlife sanctuary. The frogs — which are apparently loud croakers with a "kekkek-kek-kek" call — were docile and easily picked up by researchers, the WWF reported.

According to the WWF report, the Himalayan region is facing a range of threats, including climate change, population growth, deforestation, poaching, and pollution.

“The challenge is to preserve our threatened ecosystems before these species, and others yet unknown are lost,” Sami Tornikoski leader of the WWF Living Himalayas Initiative, said in a statement.

For a list of all the species, and a more detailed look at their attributes, read the WWF report here.

An Alarming Number Of People Think "The Martian" Is A True Story

by Matthew Perpetua

So sad.

Also, I'm going to see this tonight! The book was great.

FYI, humans have never set foot on Mars in real life.

The Martian, the new movie by Ridley Scott starring Matt Damon as an astronaut stranded on Mars, is being rightly praised for its fairly accurate portrayal of science.

But maybe it was too realistic, because an alarming number of people out there have come away from the film thinking it was based on a true story.

Amazon's Snowball is a smart box for shipping tons of cloud data

by Jon Fingas

That is so weird sounding, but I guess it makes sense. It takes me 1hr to download a 2GB game, so sending 2TB would take 1000hrs (41 days). So even with much faster internets, cloud data is even bigger than that, so "snail" mail makes sense.

It seems paradoxical that you'd have to ship cloud data, but plenty of companies do -- it's sometimes faster for them to send a courier than to wait days for a massive upload to finish. And Amazon knows it. The internet giant just revealed the Sn...

Pedro Martinez Says Excellent Playoff Pitching Will Bring In New Baseball Fans

by Lindsey Adler
Philip.paulsson

What?? No. Poor pitching would bring in more fans. Everyone (especially those new to baseball) want to see hits and runs and homeruns. Nothing is more boring than a no-hitter.

Elsa / Getty Images

Major League Baseball’s 2015 Postseason is the year of the underdog.

Several series are stacked with small market teams with long-suffering fanbases. Of the ten teams with a shot at the World Series, the Yankees and Cardinals stand out as the only perpetual contenders. From Houston to Chicago to Toronto people will find themselves in the nervous, spellbound state of finally, honestly, having something to root for this Fall Classic.

“If you want to become a fan of baseball, this is the right time to watch it,” Hall of Fame pitcher Pedro Martinez said an interview with BuzzFeed News. “These are teams that are very exciting, and their fans are very thankful. That’s what makes a loyal fan, and that’s what builds a loyal fanbase all over baseball.”

Martinez, who appeared in the playoffs five times during his 18-season career, won a World Series with the 2004 Red Sox. He will make yet another postseason appearance this week, this time as a studio analyst for TBS during the National League Wild Card, Division Series, and Championship Series.

Over the last year, Martinez has honed his skill as an analyst on MLB Network. A baseball legend who has earned rare near-universal affection, Martinez’s pitching expertise will serve valuable in a postseason that’s certain to be dominated by exciting, punishing performances on the mound.

In the postseason, pitchers appear in games on only a few days rest to carry their teams through October. This year, the National League in particular is stacked with young, exciting pitchers whose teams will sink or swim on the strength of their performances.

For Martinez, a three-time Cy Young Award winner, the opportunity to break down pitching mechanics and strategies for fans at home is the most exciting part of his role as an analyst.

“It allows me to see exactly what I love to see, which is little details about the game,” Martinez said. “I love to see all those things and then come up with my own conclusions, and I’m able to tell people what I see and what I feel. I think it’s interesting to actually reach out to the people who are not in the actual field, and those kids who are at home and want to be a baseball player. They can sit down in their parents’ lap and hear exactly how baseball should be played, and I love to be able to teach from the tv and the studio.”

“If you want to become a fan of baseball, this is the right time to watch it.”

He’ll have plenty to pick apart in the National League. On Wednesday, Jake Arrieta of the Cubs will face the Pirates in Pittsburgh, led by Gerrit Cole on the mound. The Cubs and Pirates, both in the NL Central, each could have easily won division titles, but were relegated to the Wild Card behind the 100-win Cardinals. Waiting for the winner of the Wild Card game will be John Lackey, Michael Wacha, and potentially, 2014 ace Adam Wainwright. Behind the plate, commanding their pitches, is looking to be Yadier Molina, the best catcher in baseball, back after two weeks away with a thumb injury. With Yadi behind the plate, Cardinals’ pitchers’ total ERA is 2.79, versus 3.48 when backup catcher Tony Cruz is behind the mound.

Still, the starting pitching staffs of the Mets and Dodgers is shaping up to be the premier showdown in the National League. The Mets’ pitching roster is stacked deep with 2014 Rookie of the Year Jacob DeGrom, Noah Syndergaard, and Matt Harvey, whose first year back from Tommy John surgery has resulted in a 2.71 ERA and a dazzling average of 1.000 walks and hits per inning. Toward the end of the season, Harvey’s agent tried to restrict the Mets from using him for more than an arbitrary number of innings, but it appears — and Mets fans will certainly hope — that Harvey is all in for October.

But waiting for the Mets in Los Angeles on Friday night will be Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke, who are riding into the postseason with four Cy Young Awards between them. The Dodgers have appeared in the playoffs for the last three years, but the strong regular season leaders have had devastating meltldowns before even reaching the World Series. Though the Dodgers have become a postseason staple, their most recent World Series victory was in 1988, and their eight postseason appearances since have wound up fruitless.

The Mets, who they beat in the 1988 NLCS to go to the World Series, have only made four postseason appearances since their last World Championship. But for all the Dodgers’ dazzle, the Mets’ last win came only two years before theirs, in 1986.

With his postseason experience, Martinez offered pitchers one piece of advice: “Whoever keeps their composure will find success.”

“In pitching it’s all about repeating and repeating and being able to locate your pitches at the time you need to,” Martinez said. “When I was in the playoffs I was already maturing to know the height of the situation and the things I had to do mechanically, and then after that it was just getting through. The pitchers who will find success will command the ball when it’s loud, when it’s critical, and when it seems tight.”

The American League will kick off its postseason series on Tuesday night with the Wild Card game between the Astros and the Yankees in New York. The Astros, whose streaking success came as a surprise to fans and experts who predicted them to be contenders in 2017 at the soonest, will try to make their way through to their first World Series since 2005, which they lost to the Chicago White Sox when they were still members of the National League. In the 54 years of franchise history, the Astros have never won a World Series.

Out of the Wild Card, though, the Astros or Yankees will have to face the reigning American League Champion Kansas City Royals. The Royals, whose own miraculous run through an unbelievable Wild Card game, and to the World Series, have seen a re-energized fanbase in the one year since their first playoff berth since 1985. To say in 2013 that the Royals would enter the 2015 postseason as anything other than an underdog would likely be met with disbelief. But the team dominated the AL Central and hopes to return to the seven-game series to win their first World Series since 1985.

Not to be forgotten, of course, are the Yankees, whose 27 World Series victories need no introduction. The boys from the Bronx carry an older lineup, including 40-year-old slugger Alex Rodriguez, but lost an arm on the mound Monday afternoon, when veteran lefty CC Sabathia announced he would miss the playoffs to enter rehab.

The Yankees could not hold on during the race for the AL East title, though, and the Toronto Blue Jays will enter the postseason dominant on the mound and at the plate. With their playoff berth in October, they snapped their own record for the longest playoff drought for a North American sports team, which they inherited after the Royals made their 2014 run. It is hard to look past the Jays with incredible trade-deadline acquisitions on both sides of the plate with pitcher David Price and shortstop Troy Tulowitzki. The Jays have emerged as the clear favorite to win the American League, and have high odds to win the World Series.

The Jays will first have to face the Texas Rangers, whose late season surge past the Astros for the AL West title sent them comfortably to the division round. A Rangers win over the Jays in the division series would be hard-won, even behind mid-season addition Cole Hamels on the mound. But a World Series win for the Rangers is long overdue, as their fans have endured consecutive World Series losses in 2010 and 2011.

“I think this is one of the best times for baseball in postseason,” Martinez said. “I absolutely love it! And the variety of teams that are making it to the playoffs without any expectations like this, it’s a great time for baseball.

“Some people spend their entire careers trying to make it to the postseason, and they never do,” he added. “Having that opportunity is so unique and how much you appreciate the moment that you’re getting will lead to success.”

For fans, Martinez offered one piece of advice: “Stay tuned. It will be a lot of fun.”

News in Brief: New Anti-Drug Program Teaches Teens To Resist Psychiatrist’s Constant Pressure To Use Drugs

ALEXANDRIA, VA—As part of an effort to provide young people with the tools necessary to make responsible decisions, a coalition of the nation’s leading anti-drug activists launched a new initiative Tuesday with the goal of teaching teenagers to resist pressure from psychiatrists to use drugs. “A lot of teens just don’t know how to say no when drugs are constantly pushed on them by mental health professionals, and we aim to remedy that,” campaign director Karen Thorpe said of the initiative, which will implement programs at high schools and middle schools nationwide in which 13-to-18-year-olds can discuss times they have felt coerced into trying controlled substances during therapy sessions, and will provide them with methods to avoid the influence and persuasive tactics of drug-pushing psychiatrists. “These kids see their friends and classmates using drugs in middle school, or even elementary school, and they start to think it ...

China moving full speed ahead in construction of aircraft carriers

by Sean Gallagher
Philip.paulsson

Is that a take-off ramp??

The Liaoning, the PLA Navy's first carrier, commissioned in 2012.

6 more images in gallery

Satellite photos analyzed by IHS Janes show China has dramatically ramped up efforts to construct a second aircraft carrier—the first to be built indigenously there. While the new ship will likely not be a match for US aircraft carriers, it is important for a number of reasons, and representative of China's ambitions to be a naval superpower. The ship is in "advanced state of construction" in a Dailan shipyard, according to analysis of commercial satellite images by IHS Jane's. And China's goal is reportedly to launch the new carrier by this December (in time for Mao Zedong's 122nd birthday), and outfit it by the end of next year.

China's plans to build new carriers have not exactly been a secret. Construction of the ship started in March, and was confirmed to be a carrier by People's Liberation Army (PLA) officials speaking to Hong Kong Commercial Daily. The new carrier, called the Type 001A, will include technology currently only used aboard US carriers, according to PLA Navy senior officers: an electromagnetic catapult that will allow aircraft to be launched with greater fuel and weapons loads. That would put China into a very exclusive club.

The Type 001A is likely the first of at least three new carriers that will be built by China. The PLA Navy's existing carrier, the Liaonang—an extensive rebuild of a never-completed former Soviet carrier acquired from Ukraine—took sixteen years to obtain and rebuild. But during that time, China has acquired a wealth of data about how aircraft carriers work—purchasing other derelict carriers (including one from Australia) and technical data from other countries—including data likely stolen from US defense contractors. China's military leaders have said that they believed they could now build a carrier in as little as two years.

An evening up close with the Tesla Model X

by Megan Geuss
Philip.paulsson

I wish I was in the market for a car.

(credit: Megan Geuss)

FREMONT, Calif.—At the Tesla factory in the breezy Bay Area, scores of Tesla owners and enthusiasts gathered under red mood lighting to grab free drinks and hear Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk talk about his company's third vehicle line—the Model X. Musk stopped short of revealing official pricing for the standard Model X (currently we only know that the Signature Edition costs a hefty $132,000, and that a base model could cost around $93,000), but he did outline a number of details about the vehicle that could pique the interests of the market.

Tesla seems to be going after the family car market with its latest. "It's important to show that any type of car can go electric," Musk told the crowd.

As he took the stage, Musk dove into an unscripted discussion of the Model X's safety features. The car apparently has a five-star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, with a 6.5 percent probability of injury. Musk added that because the car's battery is distributed along the chassis, the Model X has a significantly reduced probability of rollover injury. The car also "comes standard with automatic emergency braking and side collision avoidance systems."

NOVOSINKOVO, RUSSIA—Staring directly into the drooping eyes of the woozy, flushed henchman sitting across from him in the back room of a dimly lit tavern, Secretary of State John Kerry reportedly downed another vodka shot Sunday night as the last of Russian president Vladimir Putin’s security detail passed out beside him. “Nostrovia!” said Kerry as he slammed down the upturned shot glass next to dozens of others atop the warped wooden table before watching his 300-pound opponent, whose hand reportedly shook as he struggled to slowly raise his own glass of vodka to his lips, suddenly sway side to side and then slump forward in defeat. “Thanks for the nightcap, boys.” Sources confirmed that, before exiting the tavern, Secretary Kerry retrieved a few coins from the vest pocket of the unconscious man to leave as a tip for the barmaid.

These Women Claim They've Made An App That Lets You Rate Other People And The Internet Is Furious

Oh this is going to be hilarious. Also love that the founders don't know words good: "Our app will give president to the phone number of the user who logged in and claimed their profile."

OOoooh, I want a president!

Well, it does sound pretty terrifying.

Yesterday, the Washington Post ran a lengthy profile of Peeple, an app that it described as "basically Yelp, but for humans".

According to the Washington Post, the app, which will "probably" launch in late November, will allow you to review and "give one- to five-star ratings to everyone you know: your exes, your co-workers, the old guy who lives next door".

The article went on to describe how users will have to affirm that they know people in one of three categories: "personal, professional or romantic." In order to add someone to the database who hasn't previously been reviewed, one simply needs the person's cell phone number.

The paper added: "You can't opt out — once someone puts your name in the Peeple system, it's there unless you violate the site's terms of service. And you can't delete bad or biased reviews — that would defeat the whole purpose."

News in Brief: National Weather Service: ‘Don’t Go Surfing Unless You Can Really Shred That Shit’

SILVER SPRING, MD—Warning that Hurricane Joaquin was expected to produce powerful winds, violent swells, and dangerous rip currents, the National Weather Service strongly advised Americans today not to go surfing unless they could really shred that shit. “As Joaquin gains strength and begins to approach the Eastern Seaboard, we would like to remind the public that they should not attempt to enter the surf if they are unprepared to carve up these bitchin’ tubes,” said NWS director Louis Uccellini, sternly warning that those not aggro enough to charge these gnar gnar waves are going to be getting seriously cranked all day. “All of our predictive models and real-time data suggest that the waves produced by this system will be beyond mondo, and we cannot stress enough that you should remain out of the water if you’re a weak little kook or chrubee. This is an extremely dangerous Category ...

Hahah that baby's face is great.

Men are sharing photos in response to Iran’s restricting marriage contracts.

Last month, the captain of the Iranian women's football team, Niloofar Ardalan, was banned from traveling to the Asian Football Federation Women's Futsal Championship because her husband refused to let her leave the country.

Iranian marriage contracts allow husbands to determine aspects of their wives' lives, such as whether they can travel abroad, where they work, and where they live.

In response to this, women's rights page My Stealthy Freedom posted a message challenging men to publicly return their wives' right to travel freely.

Iranian men following MySteathyFreedom page can also contribute to our ongoing campaign. You can simply film yourselves or send your photos in which you state that you support your wife's right to travel freely without necessarily needing your consent.

So, now, it is men's turn. We would like you to say the following: "I, as a man, will restore my wife's right to travel back to her."

How many of you men out there are ready to join this campaign and to encourage others to join in so that we can challenge the backward and shameful laws we have in place?

by Ahmed Ali Akbar

Hahha I'm so old.

Feel old yet?

The Nintendo 64 was released in America 19 years ago. That means that if it were a human, the high-achieving 64 would be in the first semester of sophomore year right now.
