David Bowie Honored With Lightning Bolt-Shaped Constellation

Photo by SDSS, DSS Consortium, NASA/ESA/STScl

Belgian radio station Studio Brussels and MIRA Public Observatory have honored David Bowie with a constellation in the night sky, DDB Brussels reports. They registered seven stars in the shape of the iconic lightning bolt adorning Bowie's face on the cover of his 1973 album Aladdin Sane. The constellation is fittingly "in the vicinity of Mars." Studio Brussels and MIRA have also created a website called Stardust for Bowie where fans can add their favorite Bowie songs to a Google Sky representation of the constellation.

Philippe Mollet from MIRA explained the inspiration for the constellation:

It was not easy to determine the appropriate stars. Studio Brussels asked us to give Bowie a unique place in the galaxy. Referring to his various albums, we chose seven stars - Sigma Librae, Spica, Alpha Virginis, Zeta Centauri, SAA 204 132, and the Beta Sigma Octantis Trianguli Australis - in the vicinity of Mars. The constellation is a copy of the iconic Bowie lightning and was recorded at the exact time of his death.

In other Bowie news, video game company Square Enix is giving away free copies of the 1999 game Omikron: The Nomad Soul, as NME points out. Bowie contributed music to the game, some of which ended up on his album Hours. In addition, Bowie made cameo appearances as characters within the game and even had input on its storyline.

Tomorrow, Arcade Fire and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band will pay tribute to Bowie with a parade through the streets of New Orleans. In the spring, Carnegie Hall will host two David Bowie tribute concerts.

21 Stunning Photos That Will Make You See America Differently

by Laura Gallant

New York photographer Jeffrey Milstein wanted to capture aerial photos of the places "where humans gather" across New York and California. His photo series Parks and Recreation features Milstein's dizzying style of sky-high photography, created by leaning out of a helicopter.

Parks and Recreation shows public spaces like Times Square, Bryant Park, and Washington Park, museums and monuments like Griffith Observatory, the Getty Museum, and the Statue of Liberty, and sports and amusement parks like Venice skatepark, Santa Monica pier, and Coney Island.

Milstein told the Rex USA agency: "From earliest times people gathered in public spaces for community events, sharing of information, and sporting competition. Italian towns formed around public piazzas. The Greeks had the agora, the Acropolis, and outdoor theaters. Great cities like London and New York have devoted valuable land to public parks."

Milstein was inspired to pay tribute to these open public spaces by research from Dr. Laura Payne of the University of Illinois, who says that people who take part in park activities have fewer doctor visits, a lower body mass index, and lower systolic blood pressure.

News: Monsanto Lab On Lockdown After Scientists Find Shattered Tomato Containment Unit

SOCORRO, NM—Initiating emergency procedures and sealing security doors throughout the complex, scientists at Monsanto reportedly placed the agrochemical company’s main laboratory on lockdown Thursday after discovering a shattered, empty tomato containment unit.

According to sources onsite, technicians arrived at the lab’s secure vegetable isolation chamber at 8 a.m. to find the room’s armed guards lying dead on the floor next to what remained of Specimen 323-A’s 6-inch-thick tempered-glass container, which appeared to have been ruptured from the inside.

Officials would not confirm how many employees had been killed, but acknowledged the released tomato variety remained at large within the sprawling crop development facility.

“We have suffered a Code 9 containment breach,” said head biotechnologist Stewart Klein, explaining that he had used a dedicated emergency line to contact Monsanto headquarters in St. Louis, which immediately sent back a directive ordering all laboratory personnel to shelter ...

Your iPhone Will Soon Dim At Night To Help You Sleep

by Kelly Oakes
Philip.paulsson

Oh how exciting. Apple is SO innovative. I only wish Android had something like this that came out six years ago. Oh wait, it does.

The newest version of Apple’s iOS will automatically shift the light your phone emits “to the warmer end of the spectrum” after sunset.

Scientists have known for a while that blue light, like that emitted from laptop screens and smartphones, stops you getting to sleep.

Scientists have known for a while that blue light, like that emitted from laptop screens and smartphones, stops you getting to sleep.

All light can interrupt your sleep. But blue light takes the most blame for keeping you awake because it stops your body producing melatonin, a hormone that regulates your sleep-wake cycle.

Ljubaphoto / Getty Images

From the Apple website:

Many studies have shown that exposure to bright blue light in the evening can affect your circadian rhythms and make it harder to fall asleep. Night Shift uses your iOS device's clock and geolocation to determine when it's sunset in your location. Then it automatically shifts the colors in your display to the warmer end of the spectrum, making it easier on your eyes. In the morning, it returns the display to its regular settings. Pleasant dreams.

There's no release date yet for iOS 9.3, but it's already available to developers who've signed up for the public beta.

In a study of 20 people, those who wore blue-blocking amber safety glasses for three hours before bed reported significantly better sleep quality and mood than those who didn't.

For those who don't want to walk around in amber glasses, apps such as f.lux can dim your laptop screen and give it an orangey glow. But until now there's been no way to dim your iPhone screen at night in the same way (without jailbreaking it).

Just don't use this as an excuse to stay up all night on your phone.

Florida ditches surgical standards after failing hospital donates to GOP

by Beth Mole
Philip.paulsson

That's some House of Cards shit going down here.

(credit: Trisha Fawver)

Children’s heart doctors in Florida are reeling from a recent decision by the state to drop surgical standards for pediatric open heart surgery, CNN reports. To add insult to injury, doctors and medical experts suspect that the decision was purely political.

The decision follows a 2014 medical review and a June 2015 report by CNN, which found that one particular medical facility, St. Mary’s Medical Center and Palm Beach Children’s Hospital, had an abysmal track record for pediatric open-heart surgery—a death rate more than three times the national average. And the two reports found that the facility was failing to meet the now-repealed standards, which include proficiency in performing the surgeries themselves.

The St. Mary’s facility is run by Tenet Healthcare, which coincidentally donated $200,000 to the state’s republicans between 2013 and 2014, including $100,000 to Republican Governor Rick Scott’s political action committee. Those donations were the highest of any Tenet gave to political groups in other states.

News in Brief: Learned Sage Points Out That Powerball Not As Much After Taxes

BELLEVUE, WA—Imparting his profound enlightenment and worldly understanding onto all who would heed his words, local billing clerk and learned sage Cameron Wenzel reportedly pointed out Wednesday that the Powerball jackpot is not worth as much after taxes. “They say the jackpot’s $1.5 billion, but you don’t actually get all of that,” the keenly perceptive man of learning informed several coworkers, allowing them to ponder his illuminating pronouncement for several moments before shrewdly explaining that the government “takes a whole lot of it.” “You don’t get even close to that much. If you think you’re getting the whole thing, you’re in for a big surprise.” Sources confirmed that the wise guru then offered those gathered in the office break room one final insightful teaching, saying that were he himself to win, the first thing he would do is hire a tax adviser.

"My son is reaching puberty. We used to cuddle all the time, but those days are becoming scarce. Now he rather hangs with friends, plays with his phone and listens to his iPod. Exactly according to nature’s plan. I am a good mother, so of course i accept this and I am happy he is a healthy kid."

SyFy’s The Magicians and the dangers of adapting “adult Harry Potter”

by Ars Staff
Philip.paulsson

Hm. I guess I should finish the rest of the series?

High fantasy is having something of a moment on television. Game of Thrones is the biggest and most obvious example, but shows like Vampire Diaries, its Originals spin-off, Once Upon a Time, Grimm, and the somehow-still-running Supernatural have made the genre increasingly visible. SyFy’s current bid for a conversation-worthy bite of this apple is its adaptation of The Magicians, Lev Grossman’s New York Times bestselling novel about a young man who attends a magical school and struggles to defeat a world-threatening Big Bad.

If this premise sounds familiar, you wouldn’t be the first person to feel a sense of wizardly déjà vu. The books, especially the first in the trilogy, have been frequently described as “adult Harry Potter,” an assessment that is both understandable and catchy. While that meme-ified judgment of Grossman’s books is seriously reductionist, it’s also a useful way of thinking about just how tricky it’s going to be to get this adaptation right. So before the pilot’s launch on Wednesday night—and ahead of the series’ official January 2016 premiere—we got to the bottom of our “the book is always better” bias one kind of question in mind. What kind of magic are we in for?

The un-Harry Potter

SyFy

Quentin Coldwater, played by actor Jason Ralph.

4 more images in gallery

The Magicians is less “adult Harry Potter” than it is an “un-Harry.” In his protagonist Quentin Coldwater, in the magical education Quentin receives, and in the foundational structure of the series, Grossman carefully and meticulously smashes the lovely, sparkly romanticism of the Harry Potter story to pieces. Brakebills, the Magicians universe’s Hogwarts equivalent, is a frustrating and demanding place. Quentin is stuck for endless, mind-numbling hours working on rote memorization in order to master the fickle language of magic in his universe. The book is full of passages like this: “The room was the same, and the days were always, always, always the same: empty, relentless, interminable wastelands of repetition.”

Mammograms every other year for women 50-74, gov’t panel recommends

by Beth Mole
Philip.paulsson

BOOBIES

(credit: NASA/Flickr)

A government panel tasked with making recommendations for preventative medical treatments finalized its latest position on breast cancer screening Tuesday: Women with an average risk of the disease will have the best balance of benefits and harms if they get screened once every two years between age 50 and 74. For those aged 40 to 50, screening should be an individual choice based on health and personal values, the panel concluded.

The position by the panel—the US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF)—firms up the recommendation it made back in 2009, even though the panel took new data and advanced screening methods into account for its update. Still, the recommendation conflicts with those from other leading health organizations in the US and abroad, highlighting the uncertainty about screening’s benefits and the confusion women face as they manage their health.

In October, the American Cancer Society updated its recommendation. The society suggests that women with an average risk of the disease—that is, no additional risks such as genetic predisposition or breast tissue changes—are best served by getting annual exams starting at age 45 and then transitioning to screens every two years at age 55.
