Article: NFL Vows To Fix Bottomless Pit On Levi’s Stadium Field Before Super Bowl

Philip.paulsson

Would make the game much more interesting!

SANTA CLARA, CA—Following persistent safety concerns regarding the playing surface throughout the regular season, the NFL made firm assurances Friday to both the Denver Broncos and Carolina Panthers that the bottomless pit in the middle of the field at Levi’s Stadium will be fully repaired before Super Bowl 50. “The Super Bowl is the biggest sporting event in the world, and we are working closely with Levi’s Stadium to ensure that the turf’s bottomless pit will not be an issue come game time,” NFL field director Ed Mangan said of the 14-foot-diameter hole situated near the 40-yard line, adding that the risk of a player accidentally slipping and being lost forever in an infinite black void is “something the league takes very seriously.” “We certainly want to avoid another incident like the one earlier this season when [St. Louis Rams safety] T.J. McDonald fell into ...

News in Brief: Mom Holds Knife To Throat Of Dinner Guest Who Offered To Help With Dishes

TOLLAND, CT—Responding with lightning-quick reflexes to her dinner guest’s proposal, area mother Linda McGregor reportedly grabbed a 10-inch chef’s knife Thursday night and held it up to the throat of family friend Diane Wallace following her offer to help with the dishes. “Say one more thing about clearing the table or putting the dishes in the dishwasher, Diane, and I’ll gut you like a fish,” said the 56-year-old, intently staring into Wallace’s eyes as she pressed the blade just firmly enough against the woman’s neck for it to draw a single bead of blood. “Pour yourself another glass of red wine and just forget all about these dirty plates, the used silverware, or any of the pots and pans. Because if you even so much as step foot in the kitchen while I’m cleaning up, the next thing you’ll see—the last ...

A Politician Was Hit In The Face With A Dildo And He Seemed To Take It Pretty Well

Here is New Zealand's Economic Development Minister Steven Joyce during a press conference. He's speaking on behalf of NZ Prime Minister John Key in Waitangi.

Waitangi is the traditional place of celebration for New Zealand’s national day which takes place annually on February 6 and marks the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. The treaty, which heralded a declaration of British sovereignty over New Zealand, was signed by representatives of the British Crown and a group of northern chiefs in 1840. Waitangi Day has since become contentious for some Māori, and since 1971 people have protested against race relations within New Zealand, as well as the loss of Māori land.

So Joyce is discussing things with the press when a protestor arrives and picks a very unique way to show their disapproval: throwing a big ol' dildo at his face.

A Mouse Has Died Inside A 155-Year-Old Mousetrap In A Museum Exhibit

RIP mouse.

A freshly dead mouse has been found inside a mousetrap so old it is literally a museum exhibit.

It was not baited. Obviously.

The museum isn’t sure what to do with it. One option is to have it taxidermied and added as a permanent fixture to the mousetrap display. The other, a dignified burial.

If we could interview the mouse and ask him why he did it, we would probably learn the meaning of life. But we soldier on into the void, ever clueless.

US takes first steps toward approving babies with three genetic parents

by Annalee Newitz

Already The Expanse has made accurate predictions about the future!

In this magnified image of mouse cells, the nucleus is blue, the mitochondria are green, and the cell walls are red. Every cell has hundreds or even thousands of mitochondria producing energy. (credit: D. Burnette, J. Lippincott-Schwartz/NICHD)

Today a panel of scientists released a report recommending that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approve testing for a medical procedure known as mitochondrial replacement, which could prevent dangerous genetic diseases in newborns. The procedure, already approved in Great Britain, still has a long way to go before final approval in the US.

A microscopic organ transplant

Though critics say it will send us down a slippery slope of "gene editing," there is in fact no gene editing involved in mitochondrial replacement. Instead, it's more like a microscopic version of an organ transplant.

Mitochondria are called "organelles" because they play an organ-like role in the cell. A bit like a miniature stomach, mitochondria break down molecules to provide energy for the entire body. Mitochondria are also the only part of the cell that contains DNA, other than the nucleus. Some biologists believe this is because mitochondria were once separate cells, absorbed in a process called endosymbiosis during a very early phase in cellular evolution, which nevertheless retained a shred of DNA over the billions of years since that merging.

News in Brief: ‘This Will Be The End Of Trump’s Campaign,’ Says Increasingly Nervous Man For Seventh Time This Year

Philip.paulsson

I feel you, Increasingly Nervous Man.

SALISBURY, MD—Repeating identical comments he had made in June, July, August, September, and twice in November, increasingly nervous local man Aaron Howe responded to Donald Trump’s call to ban Muslims from entering the U.S. Monday by once again stating this would be the end of the Republican frontrunner’s campaign, sources confirmed. “Well, that’s it—you just can’t say those kinds of things and expect to be taken seriously any longer,” said an anxious Howe, his voice quavering slightly as he spoke aloud the very same words he had previously uttered in reaction to remarks about Mexicans, women, the disabled, former POW John McCain, and a number of other targeted parties. “That’s the final nail in the coffin right there. There’s no way he’s coming back from this one.” At press time, a visibly tense Howe was steadily amassing the angst and ...

Microsoft’s new way of cooling its data centers: Throw them in the sea

by Peter Bright
Philip.paulsson

What with all the global warming this seems somewhat misguided.

Lowering Leona Philpot into the water. (credit: Microsoft)

Air conditioning is one of the biggest costs in running data centers. Traditional data centers use as much electricity for cooling as they do for running the actual IT equipment. Accordingly, much of the innovation seen in the high-density cloud server space has been to develop data centers that are cheaper to cool and hence cheaper to run. With its much higher heat capacity than air, water has become the coolant of choice, pumped around and between the computers to transport their heat outside.

Project Natick

Microsoft has demonstrated an experimental prototype of a new approach: instead of pumping water around the data center, put the data center in the water. Project Natick is a research project to build and run a data center that's submerged in the ocean. The company built an experimental vessel, named the Leona Philpot, and deployed it on the seafloor about 1 kilometer off the Pacific coast. It ran successfully from August to November last year.

As well as the obvious cooling advantage this brings, Microsoft argues that this kind of data center will bring other benefits, too. About half of the world's population lives within 200km of the ocean, and so the ability to put data centers in the water means that they can always be located close to major population centers. This in turn ensures that they offer low latency connections. The company also says that the self-contained units can be deployed quickly, within 90 days, rather than the 2 years it takes to build a conventional building, or the 1 year that Microsoft says its fourth generation data centers take. The units could also be paired with tidal power generation to further reduce their environmental impact.

A Man Running For Office Legally Changed His Name To "Above Znoneofthe"

An Ontario man running for office legally changed his name to give voters the option of "None of the above" on their ballots.

Sheldon Bergson paid $137 to change his name to Above Znoneofthe and is running as an independent in the provincial byelection in Whitby-Oshawa.

The 46-year-old from Thornhill told BuzzFeed Canada he started his name change in hopes of getting on the ballot during the last federal election but missed the window.

“And then the byelection popped up and I thought I might as well get some use out of it,” Bergson said. (He still goes by his birth name for the most part.)

Sheldon Bergson a.k.a. Above Znoneofthe

"I would have liked it better [the other way] but I'm still getting their attention and people are noticing it," he said.

Candidates will be listed alphabetically by last name, so the "Z" in his last name still puts him at the bottom of the list of candidates. His campaign slogan of "Scraping the bottom of the ballot" still applies.

There's one more complication: There's already a "none of the above" option in the Whitby-Oshawa byelection: Greg Vezina, the leader of the None Of The Above party.

Vezina told BuzzFeed Canada it's "fantastic" there will be two such options for voters, and he said he respects Bergson's commitment.

“It took huge balls for the guy to do what he did. I admire it."

Montgomery, an officer who serves in Fort Walton Beach, said he was sent to the center over a situation with a former employee.

"We spoke for about 20 minutes and I was wrapping up my investigation," he told BuzzFeed. "One of the supervisors left, and while I was still speaking to the director of PAWS, the supervisor came back in with this little puppy in her hands. You could tell he'd been sleeping because his eyes were heavy and he was yawning constantly."

Montgomery said he "immediately" asked to hold the puppy.

"[The employee] went on to tell me that one of the cat adoption associates had come into the building and was hearing a noise from the back of the building," he said. "She walked out the back door and saw a box, with Kylo, sitting inside the box by himself, crying. Originally, I was told he was in the box with other puppies, but I later found out that it was just him."

As soon as he met Kylo, Montgomery knew he had to have him.
