Kawasaki motorcycles will be able to talk to you

Kawasaki says the project is still in its early stages, but Kawasaki hopes the system, called Kanjo Engine, will imbue its riding machines with a bit of personality. Users will be able to talk to their bikes in natural language to tweak performance and adjust other settings. The system is designed to make some changes on its own too, learning user preferences by monitoring their riding style and behaviour. Neat -- particularly if your childhood dream is to solve crimes with a talking motorcycle.

This Video Shows Hope Solo's Emotional Reaction To Her Suspension From US Soccer

by Tasneem Nashrulla
Philip.paulsson

LOL stupid Hope Solo. Never talk smack about the Swedes!

“Seventeen fucking years…and it’s over.”

A video released Tuesday showed soccer star Hope Solo break down moments after finding out that she was suspended from the US national team for six months — and that her contract with the soccer federation was terminated.

The clip from Keeping Score — a docu-series following Solo and other US soccer players at the Rio Games — showed Solo's immediate reaction upon learning that she had been fired after an Aug. 24 meeting with Jill Ellis, the US Women National's Team Coach, and Dan Flynn, the US Soccer Secretary General.

Solo had come under fire for calling her Swedish opponents "cowards" after losing to them in the Olympics. "We played a bunch of cowards. The best team did not win today, I strongly, firmly believe that," Solo said after the match.

US Soccer President Sunil Gulati said Solo's comments were "unacceptable and do not meet the standard of conduct we require from our National Team players."

"Six months suspension, no pay," Solo is seen telling her husband, Jerramy Stevens, as she enters the room after learning her fate. "Effective immediately," she adds, as Stevens comforts her.

"Terminated contract. Not just a suspension," Solo says. Stevens responds, "How can they do both?" She replies, "It's both."

On Tuesday, Solo announced her decision to end her season with the Seattle Reign.

In a statement, Solo said, "Coming to terms with the fact I was fired from the U.S. Women’s National Team after 17 years of service has been devastating. After careful consideration, I have decided to end my season with the Seattle Reign, an organization I love playing for. Mentally, I am not there yet. After watching the team’s win against Portland this weekend and seeing Haley Kopmeyer playing so well in goal, I truly believe this decision is what’s best for me and for the Reign organization."

The footage will be aired during the finale of Keeping Score on Sept. 2.

Cool, Lauren and I just finished the first season. Was pretty good.

It will be in 2017 and here is the new teaser trailer.

Netflix has finally announced that Stranger Things is coming back for a second season in a short trailer.

Don't scroll down if you haven't finished the first season!

The cryptic teaser contains these words, which could be the titles for each of the episodes in Season 2.

There are nine titles and Netflix has announced nine new episodes, so it seems to make sense.

In an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly published today, the Duffer brothers said that Season 2 is not too much longer, to make sure it is manageable and so "it is never treading water."

They also announced that there will be four new characters and that some scenes will not be set in Hawkins, Indiana.

Olympic Officials: ‘On The Whole, Only 4 Or 5 Really Terrible Things Happened’

Philip.paulsson

Hahah kinda true.

RIO DE JANEIRO—Reflecting on the recently concluded 2016 Summer Games in Rio, members of the International Olympic Committee held a press conference Sunday to proudly announce that on the whole, only about four or five really terrible things happened. “Looking back, all of it actually went pretty well over the past two weeks, aside from a handful of truly awful incidents,” said IOC president Thomas Bach, adding that while there were several absolutely embarrassing and ugly moments, the Rio Games “went a lot better than expected, generally speaking, which is pretty good.” “Admittedly, there were a few really horrific things that took place, and those were regrettable, certainly. But when you look past those, it was fine.” Bach then concluded the press conference by shrugging his shoulders and saying, “Brazil did all right.”

Study: Dogs Recognize Human Speech, Tone

Philip.paulsson

Awww, now I feel bad about all those times I called Moxie a stupid little girl in a high pitched praising voice...

A recent experiment performed MRI scans on dogs as their trainers praised them and found the reward centers in dogs’ brains would light up only if the trainers spoke recognizable praise words and said them in a bright tone, meaning dogs process speech in a multifaceted way previously believed unique to humans. What do you think?

Bill Nye returns to TV in 2017 with Netflix talk show

by Sam Machkovech

Enlarge / Gosh, I love that planet pin. (credit: billnye.com)

Bill Nye's social capital has been on the rise in recent years, as he has transitioned from a kid-friendly science show host to a no-nonsense defender of hard science (and bow ties). His polite aggression has appeared on talk shows, lecture halls, and comedy series, but none of his enjoyable bluster has come in his own series in some time.

Netflix has announced plans to change that with the introduction of Bill Nye Saves the World, a new Netflix-exclusive talk show series launching in spring 2017. In a Wednesday press release, Netflix described the show's aspirations to "refute anti-scientific claims that may be espoused by politicians, religious leaders, or titans of industry"—so the show is clearly aiming to maintain the junk-science battle that Nye has loudly fought in recent years.

Like his '90s TV series, the new Netflix show looks like it will provide equal parts comedy and hard science, as head writers have been hired for those elements (with comedian Mike Drucker and astronomer Phil Plait filling those respective roles). Though the press release didn't indicate how vulgar or extreme the humor may go, Nye's hilarious, frustrated-cursing turn on a 2015 episode of Inside Amy Schumer makes us hopeful that he'll veer a little blue when taking on topics like "vaccinations, genetically modified foods, and climate change."

Someone Made A Guide For What To Do When You See Islamophobia And It's Perfect

by Ryan Broderick

Step 1: Ignore the attacker.

This bystander’s guide to Islamophobic harassment was created by a young illustrator and filmmaker who works in Paris and goes by Maeril. She made versions in both French and English.

maeril.tumblr.com

This is an illustrated guide I made as part of my co-admining work at The Middle Eastern Feminist on Facebook! It will be published there shortly.

The technique that is displayed here is a genuine one used in psychology — I forgot the name and couldn’t find it again so if you know about it, feel free to tell me!

Some could say: “Yes but you can use that technique for instances of harassment other than Islamophobic attacks!”, and my reply is: Sure! Please do so, it also works for other “types” of harassment of a lone person in a public space!!

However I’m focusing on protecting Muslims here, as they have been very specific targets lately, and as a French Middle Eastern woman, I wanted to try and do something to raise awareness on how to help when such things happen before our eyes - that way one cannot say they “didn’t know what to do”!

I’d like to insist on two things:

1) Do not, in any way, interact with the attacker. You must absolutely ignore them and focus entirely on the person being attacked!

2) Please make sure to always respect the wishes of the person you’re helping: whether they want you to leave quickly afterwards, or not! If you’re in a hurry escort them to a place where someone else can take over — call one of their friends, or one of yours, of if they want to, the police. It all depends on how they feel!

Let's break down Maeril's strategy, shall we? The first step is to engage the victim in conversation, ignoring the aggressor.

Maeril suggests attempting small talk about anything, just so long as you're making the person being harassed feel safe.

Aurora over Icelandic Fault

Philip.paulsson

Cool: "Admire the beauty but fear the beast. The beauty is the aurora overhead, here taking the form of great green spiral, seen between picturesque clouds with the bright Moon to the side and stars in the background. The beast is the wave of charged particles that creates the aurora but might, one day, impair civilization. Exactly this week in 1859, following notable auroras seen all across the globe, a pulse of charged particles from a coronal mass ejection (CME) associated with a solar flare impacted Earth's magnetosphere so forcefully that they created the Carrington Event. A relatively direct path between the Sun and the Earth might have been cleared by a preceding CME. What is sure is that the Carrington Event compressed the Earth's magnetic field so violently that currents were created in telegraph wires so great that many wires sparked and gave telegraph operators shocks. Were a Carrington-class event to impact the Earth today, speculation holds that damage might occur to global power grids and electronics on a scale never yet experienced. The featured aurora was imaged last week over Thingvallavatn Lake in Iceland, a lake that partly fills a fault that divides Earth's large Eurasian and North American tectonic plates."

Dad Shares Photo Album Through Never-Before-Seen Website

SECAUCUS, NJ—Wondering aloud how the father of three even managed to find the online image-hosting service, family members of local dad Phil Yates told reporters Monday the 57-year-old had shared a photo album with them through a never-before-seen website. “I got this weird email saying that Dad wanted to share some photos with me on his ‘PicLinks photo desk,’ and the link took me to this site I’ve never heard of at all,” said daughter Katherine Yates, 23, adding that she was forced to sign up for something called a PicLinks “PixelClub Account” and opt in to the PicLinks photo tips mailing list to view her father’s pictures of a recent gathering at their Uncle Steve’s rented beach house. “The site had a bunch of these pop-up offers for creating a personalized photo book, and then after looking at a few pictures, I got a notification ...

Tesla Model S and Model x get unparalleled speed, range upgrades

by Megan Geuss
Philip.paulsson

2.5 seconds. Holy crap.

Enlarge (credit: Tesla)

On Tuesday, Tesla announced its new P100D version of the Model S and Model X. The cars are fast and have huge batteries—and of course, they’re very, very pricey.

The electric vehicle company headed by CEO Elon Musk called the Model S P100D the “quickest production car in the world,” noting that only two cars are faster—the LaFerrari and the Porsche 918 Spyder, both cars that were limited-run two-seaters. With the “Ludicrous Mode” option (which customers must pay extra for), the Model S P100D will go 0 to 60 miles per hour in 2.5 seconds. (That’s 0 to 100km/h in 2.7 seconds.)

When Ludicrous Mode was announced last summer, it only took a Model S P85D from 0 to 60 mph in a lackadaisical 2.8 seconds.

Ryan Lochte Now Changing Account Of Events Going Back Years Before Robbery

CHARLOTTE, NC—Amid conflicting reports of his alleged robbery in Rio de Janeiro alongside three of his teammates, sources confirmed Thursday that U.S. Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte has begun changing his account of events going back years before the incident. “During the mugging, a man posing as a police officer did not hold a gun directly to my forehead, nor was I at the Olympic Games, nor have I ever been a competitive swimmer,” said Lochte, who asserted that he misspoke during his earlier statement, and has in fact lived in Denver while working as a graphic designer for the past 15 years. “What happened was, I moved to Colorado in 2006 after finishing grad school, and that’s actually when I met my wife, Danielle.
