Speed reading apps may kill comprehension

by John Timmer
Philip.paulsson

RE: that speed-reading app

A few months back, there was a lot of buzz about a new display technology that promised to greatly increase people's reading speeds. The approach, typified by Spritz, displays words one at a time in a single location. As the speed cranks up and words fly by, the service seems to live up to its promise: each word registers as it briefly flits across the screen.

But a new paper suggests that the approach has some severe limitations. Quite literally, there's no going back once you shoot past a word, and the result is a noticeable decrease in reading comprehension.

At war with saccades

The point of contention for everyone involved centers on small, rapid eye movements called saccades. Saccades occur naturally in vertebrates from us to fish, as they allow the eye to rapidly focus its attention. These eye movements are central to reading. As you read across a page of normally formatted text, your brain directs your eyes through a series of saccades that focus attention on each succeeding word.

19 Things You Should Never Say To Your Partner When She's Pregnant

Philip.paulsson

For the guys.

Nine months can be a long time if you’ve got a big mouth.

David Leo Veksler/ Flickr: heroiclife

“Whoa! Are you eating again?”

“Whoa! Are you eating again?”

Your partner's increased appetite in the second trimester is totally normal because (HELLO!) there's a baby growing inside of her. You, on the other hand, have no excuse for the thirty chicken wings you polished off during the game, so you should keep your yapper shut.

Paramount Pictures

"This beer is so refreshing! Man, it sure does hit the spot!"

"This beer is so refreshing! Man, it sure does hit the spot!"

Pregnant women aren't supposed to drink (and may not be very happy about it), so it's best not to make a big show of how much you're enjoying your adult beverage, especially if you've decided against abstaining in solidarity.

Dreamworks

“Geez, the house sure is messy.”

“Geez, the house sure is messy.”

If you ever feel the impulse to say this, stop yourself and spend a few minutes straightening up instead. It will make your life (and your partner's) a whole lot happier.

Kale Comes Out As Gay In Exclusive BuzzFeed Interview

Philip.paulsson

It* looks like Madonna.

And only just now am I realizing that they are maybe talking about the vegetable, and this is actually Madonna calling kale gay.

And I clicked through and that is indeed the truth. I'm done here now.

Kale responds to rumors that it is, in fact, gay. BuzzFeed reports.

Ross Couper, a field guide at Singita Kruger National Park, witnessed a herd move through the bush, feeding on the fruit. The youngsters began to act rather strangely, displaying signs of being tipsy.

Needless to say, that's not how I spend my time (retouching snapshots for strangers at no charge), and normally I would disregard this message, but this time (thanks to the Retouching Academy team members, and specifically to Jaron), I took a moment to share the source file in our Retouching Academy Community Group.

I made sure the owner of the photo was ok if my friends touched it up for him, of course.

Habitable exoplanets are bad news for humanity

by Akshat Rathi
Philip.paulsson

Since we won't be getting there any time soon, I think we should go all Titan (by Stephen Baxter) and shoot out some bacteria/genetic material to go land on that planet to evolve into life.

Let’s hope it’s barren.
NASA Ames/SETI Institute/JPL-CalTech

Last week, scientists announced the discovery of Kepler-186f, a planet 492 light years away in the Cygnus constellation. Kepler-186f is special because it marks the first planet almost exactly the same size as Earth orbiting in the “habitable zone,” the distance from a star in which we might expect liquid water—and perhaps life.

What did not make the news, however, is that this discovery also slightly increases how much credence we give to the possibility of our own near-term extinction. This is because of a concept known as the Great Filter.

The Great Filter is an argument that attempts to resolve the Fermi Paradox: why have we not found aliens (or why have they not found us), despite the existence of hundreds of billions of exosolar systems in our galactic neighborhood in which life might evolve? As the namesake physicist Enrico Fermi noted, it seems rather extraordinary that not a single extraterrestrial signal or engineering project has been detected (UFO conspiracy theorists notwithstanding).
