5 Mathematical Bets That Will Win You Free Pints At The Pub

I like the glass circumference one.

Squeeze coins through holes that should be too small, read people’s minds, and work out their bank details – all using maths.

Bet someone you can fit a two-pence coin through a hole the size of a five-pence coin.

Bet someone you can fit a two-pence coin through a hole the size of a five-pence coin.

Draw a circle exactly the same size as a five-pence coin. Cut it out of the paper, leaving as perfectly circular a hole as possible. Your challenge now is to fit a two-pence coin through that hole without ripping the paper.

Scientists Dressed Up A Rover As A Baby Penguin To Infiltrate A Group Of Actual Penguins For Science

Philip.paulsson

Awwwwwwww

As well as looking really cute, it means the penguins don’t get disturbed by human scientists.

A human going up to penguins in the wild could stress them out and change their behaviour. Then all you have is unhappy penguins and unreliable results.

In one experiment involving emperor penguins the scientists camoflaged a rover as a penguin chick.

Le Maho et. al. / Via Nature

Scientists tagged 34 king penguins with external heart rate monitors that could be read by an antenna fixed to a rover. The next day they sent a rover (not dressed up as a baby penguin) into the group of penguins.

And it worked! The king penguins' heart rates increased less and returned to normal quicker than when compared to humans approaching them.

In the next experiment scientists dressed the rover up as a penguin chick and sent it to take readings from a group of emperor penguins.

EFF asks for the right to revive “abandoned” online games

by Kyle Orland
Philip.paulsson

I hope they get the exemption!

Aurich Lawson / Thinkstock

While playing the original versions of classic games on aging original hardware can sometimes be difficult, it's at least typically possible. That's not the case for many online games, which are functionally inoperable once the developer or publisher decides to shut down the official servers that provide the only way for players to communicate with each other. Unofficial hobbyist projects that try to create new servers for these abandoned games could run afoul of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and its ban on "the circumvention of access control technologies."

The Electronic Frontier Foundation wants to change that. In an official exemption request (PDF) filed with the Library of Congress this week, the nonprofit advocacy group asks that users be allowed to modify access controls and online authentication checks in legally obtained games "when the [game] servers authorized by the developer are permanently shut down." In this way, those users can access third-party servers in order to regain "core functionality" that is no longer available through the defunct official servers.

The EFF gives the specific example of Nintendo's Mario Kart games, which used a proprietary protocol to communicate with Nintendo's servers before Nintendo shut those servers down for the Wii and DS. Reverse-engineering that protocol could be considered "circumvention" in the DMCA's current broad prohibitions, as could modifying the game's code to allow for connection to new, non-Nintendo servers.

16 Swedish Brands You Can Shop Online

Land of the design geniuses.

Just an FYI: Although a lot of these brands ship to the United States, we've mentioned U.S.-based retailers where possible. When you have goods imported to the States, they can be subject to local customs/taxes, which might not show up on your original bill. These costs can be hard to predict, and can be $$$, so just keep that in mind when ordering directly from the brand!

Pirate Bay co-founder convicted in Denmark’s “largest hacking case” ever

by Cyrus Farivar
Philip.paulsson

He looks exactly like I expected him to look.

Gottfrid Svartholm Warg (center) could be barred from entering Denmark at his sentencing hearing on Friday.

One of the co-founders of the notorious Pirate Bay website was convicted (Google Translate) Thursday in a major hacking case in Denmark, and could face up to six years in prison.

Gottfrid Svartholm Warg, better known by his nom de hacker "anakata," was found guilty of "hacking and gross damage" after being accused of illegally accessing the country’s driver’s license database (Google Translate), social security database, the shared IT system across the Schengen zone, and the e-mail accounts and passwords of 10,000 police officers and tax officials. All of that data was managed by CSC, a large American IT contractor.

Under Danish law, even after conviction, the defendants are only officially known by anonymous monikers: Svartholm Warg was dubbed "T1," while his still-unnamed 21-year-old Danish co-defendant was named "T2."

A Woman Called 911 And Pretended To Order A Pizza To Alert Them Of Domestic Abuse

BuzzFeed News spoke to the 911 dispatcher who claimed to have received the call.

I had a call that started out pretty dumb, but was actually pretty serious:
"911, where is you emergency?"
"123 Main St."
"Ok, what's going on there?"
"I'd like to order a pizza for delivery." (oh great, another prank call).
"Ma'am, you've reached 911"
"Yeah, I know. Can I have a large with half pepperoni, half mushroom and peppers?"
"Ummm…. I'm sorry, you know you've called 911 right?"
"Yeah, do you know how long it will be?"
"Ok, Ma'am, is everything ok over there? do you have an emergency?"
"Yes, I do."
"..And you can't talk about it because there's someone in the room with you?" (moment of realization)
"Yes, that's correct. Do you know how long it will be?"
"I have an officer about a mile from your location. Are there any weapons in your house?"
"Nope."
"Can you stay on the phone with me?"
"Nope. See you soon, thanks"
As we dispatch the call, I check the history at the address, and see there are multiple previous domestic violence calls. The officer arrives and finds a couple, female was kind of banged up, and boyfriend was drunk. Officer arrests him after she explains that the boyfriend had been beating her for a while. I thought she was pretty clever to use that trick. Definitely one of the most memorable calls.

BuzzFeed News spoke to the former 911 dispatcher who recounted the story of a woman who called to order a "pizza" but was in fact calling about domestic violence.

Today, Weisinger is an environmental attorney with the United States Environmental Protection Agency.

"This call occurred almost 10 years ago," he told BuzzFeed News. "I worked the graveyard shift, 6pm–6am, and I remember this call being pretty late – close to midnight."

Weisinger said the woman – who he believed was in her 30s – was calm at first, but gave short, hurried responses. "I remember feeling relieved we had an officer close by who could respond quickly," he added.

"This is a part of the job most 911 dispatchers find frustrating. Beyond the immediate resolution – arrest, hospitalisation, etc – we rarely hear what happens to the people who call."

Occasionally, callers make an effort to meet the dispatchers who helped them through a traumatic experience, but Weisinger said that typically the only way dispatchers will know what happened afterwards is if officers or paramedics make a point of keeping in touch with the person.

Anita Sarkeesian goes on Colbert. You’ll totally believe what happens next

by Nathan Mattise
Philip.paulsson

Haha nice.

If anyone was still unaware of GamerGate by this point, Stephen Colbert provided a one-night crash course through an editorial segment (below) and an interview with critic Anita Sarkeesian (above).

"You and the other feminazis in the gamer world are coming for our balls, to snip 'em off, put 'em in a little felt purse, and take them away so we have to play your non-violent games, right?"

"Not quite. There is something going on," Sarkeesian replied. "What it is, is women are being harassed, threatened, and terrorized..."

"After you first attacked male gamers for enjoying looking at big breasted women with tiny armor that barely covers their nipples?" Colbert interjected. "What's wrong with that? I'm a man, baby. Newsflash: I like that."

In typical Colbert fashion, the host boiled down a hot media controversy to its core and found spots of seeming lunacy. Sarkeesian retold the story of her lecture at Utah State University being canceled after an anonymous e-mail threatened the biggest school shooting to date. She dismissed the "threat" of women gamers, saying it may be a result of the gaming industry's resistance to becoming more inclusive. Colbert's response to all of that? "Why not just have a separate game? Have separate but equal games?"
