Orion Launch

Orion Launch Headed for two orbits of planet Earth and a splashdown in the Pacific, Orion blazed into the early morning sky on Friday at 7:05am ET. The spacecraft was launched atop a United Launch Aliance Delta IV Heavy rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. Its first voyage into space on an uncrewed flight test, the Orion traveled some 3,600 miles from Earth, about 15 times higher than the orbital altitude of the International Space Station. In fact, Orion traveled farther into space than any spacecraft designed for astronauts since the Apollo missions to the Moon. The Orion crew module reached speeds of 20,000 miles per hour and temperatures approaching 4,000 degrees Fahrenheit as it re-entered Earth's atmosphere about 4.5 hours after launch.

This is so cool.

For most of us, high-speed image capture, say 120 or 240 frames per second, is enough to get a good look at stuff happening in the blink of an eye -- like a water droplet hitting the ground or a Bichon Frisé snagging his favorite ball. For faster sub...

Dealmaster says more monitors equals more happiness

by Lee Hutchinson
Philip.paulsson

This is true. Though.... I am happier at home with my two 24" monitors than I am at work with my four 19" monitors. But that's probably because I'm just happier at home, period.

A fine wintery December afternoon to you all, Arsians! The Dealmaster rides again, bringing you a bucketload of seasonal savings courtesy of our partners at TechBargains. This week, we've got a pair of big honking Dell Ultrasharps in the top slot: one's a very wide 29-inch panoramic, and the other is a beautiful 30-inch U3014 that would do any desk proud.

Besides the hot monitor action, we have our usual list of deals and stuff down below. If your stockings are empty, may we suggest perusing these deals to see if you can find something with which to stuff them? A limp stocking is a sad stocking!

Update: Added the correct coupon code for the U3014. Sorry!

Family Finds Dead, Pregnant Shark On The Beach And Gives Her A C-Section

Philip.paulsson

Crazy! Wonder how they'll fare without their mom?

Not for the faint of heart!

Holy smokes, this might just be the craziest birth ever. According to the YouTube uploader, these people found a dead shark washed up on the beach. Her tummy was jiggling, so they decided to cut her open to save the babies inside. HEROES.

This video was uploaded in May, but is just starting to make the rounds.

Sony Pictures malware tied to Seoul, “Shamoon” cyber-attacks

by Sean Gallagher
Philip.paulsson

Over a week!!!

The “wiper” malware that knocked Sony Pictures’ corporate network offline for over a week, now being called Destover, bears a striking resemblance not only to the “DarkSeoul” malware that struck South Korean companies last year, but the Shamoon “wiper” that struck Saudi Aramco in 2012, according to analysis by Kaspersky Labs and other security researchers. While there is nothing in the analysis that would tie the three attacks to the same malware developers, they all used similar techniques, as well as some of the same commercial Windows drivers to attack the hard drives of their victims.

In an e-mail exchange with Ars, Kaspersky Lab security researcher Kurt Baumgartner said, “Of the three, the Shamoon and Destover implementations share the most similarities, and based on these similarities it is possible that there was shared guidance or expertise between the two projects. All three share operational similarities.”

The Sony Pictures malware used commercial software to do its damage to the victim computers’ hard drives—the RawDisk library from EldoS, which allows Windows applications to gain direct access to disk hardware without having to run in administrator mode. As EldoS advertises on its website for RawDisk, the library “offers software developers direct access to files, disks and partitions of the disks (hard drives, flash disks, etc,) for user-mode applications, bypassing security limitations of Windows operating systems.” This allowed the malware to skip past any restrictive security permissions in Windows’ NTFS file system and overwrite the data on the drive, including the master boot record (MBR). (Further details of the malware's behavior are in Ars' updated analysis article.)

"Gangnam Style" Has Been Watched So Many Times It Broke YouTube

Philip.paulsson

Awesome.

We’re going to need a bigger view counter.

Psy’s "Gangnam Style" has been watched so many times YouTube has been forced to upgrade its view counter.

At the time of writing, the music video, from July 2012, had so far been watched 2,154, 803, 897 (2.15 billion) times.

youtube.com

The view counter on the video-sharing site originally used a 32-bit integer, meaning the maximum number of views it could record was 2,147,483,647, the BBC reported.

The view counter on the video-sharing site originally used a 32-bit integer, meaning the maximum number of views it could record was 2,147,483,647, the BBC reported .

The success of "Gangnam Style", which has a billion more views than the second-most watched video on YouTube, has forced the Google-owned site into an upgrade.

youtube.com

We never thought a video would be watched in numbers greater than a 32-bit integer (=2,147,483,647 views), but that was before we met Psy. "Gangnam Style" has been viewed so many times we had to upgrade to a 64-bit integer (9,223,372,036,854,775,808)!

Hover over the counter in Psy's video to see a little math magic and stay tuned for bigger and bigger numbers on YouTube.

Alex was able to turn herself into a puddle of silvery liquid, perform telekinesis, and zap people with these little lightning bolts that came out of her fingers.

While puberty isn't usually accompanied by supernatural side effects, what Alex went through pretty much felt akin to being a hormonal teenager.

The actress Larisa Oleynik, who played Alex, told the Huffington Post: "I think [the powers] were, for me, more of a metaphor for all the weird changes you go through in that time in your life."

Sony Pictures hack gets uglier; North Korea won’t deny responsibility [Updated]

by Sean Gallagher
Philip.paulsson

Too funny.

More evidence has emerged that makes the Sony Pictures hack look similar to a suspected attack on South Korean companies over a year ago. And a spokesperson for the North Korean government, rather than denying his country’s involvement, is playing coy as the damage to Sony appears to be growing daily.

When contacted by the BBC, a spokesperson for North Korea’s mission to the United Nations said, "The hostile forces are relating everything to [North Korea]. I kindly advise you to just wait and see."

Sony Pictures’ computers were reportedly the victim of wiper malware which erased all the data on infected PCs and the servers they were connected to. As Ars reported yesterday, this is similar to the attack on two South Korean broadcasters and a bank that was launched in 2013. As security reporter Brian Krebs reports, the FBI sent out a “Flash Alert” to law enforcement warning of a cyber attacker using “wiper” malware this week—malicious software that erases the entire contents of the infected machine’s hard drives as well as the contents of the master boot record of the computer. The FBI shared a Snort intrusion detection signature for the malware file, and as Krebs noted, "the language pack referenced by the malicious files is Korean."

A dive team from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) in California has captured the terrifying black seadevil on video for the first time ever.

According to MBARI Senior Scientist Bruce Robison, it's the first video footage ever of this species alive and in its natural depth. The black seadevil, whose scientific name is Melanocetus, is “among the most rarely seen of all deep-sea fishes,” said Robison in a press release.

The good news: It's a mere 3.5 inches long, so unless you're a shrimp, you'll be OK.

Hackers shut down Sony Pictures' computers and are blackmailing the studio

Philip.paulsson

Holy crap!

Today, employees across the Sony Pictures offices were greeted with a strange picture as they tried to login to their computers. Since this afternoon, computers at the company have been completely unresponsive, showing a glowering CGI skeleton, a series of URL addresses, and a threatening message from a hacker group that identifies itself as #GOP. Dozens of Sony Twitter accounts were also commandeered to tweet out similar messages, although Sony seems to have regained control of those accounts. Early reports from Sony employees suggest the studio has yet to regain computer access.

A now-deleted tweet captured by B2C, calling out Sony Entertainment CEO Michael Lynton.

The group appears to have obtained a number of sensitive documents from Sony Pictures, many of which are named in a .zip file shared at the posted URLs, and is threatening to release them if Sony pictures does not comply with the group's demands. (The demands themselves are still unclear.) The documents named in the .zip file are widely varied, suggesting the attackers pulled the full contents of an employee server. Dozens of podcast mp3 files are named alongside potentially sensitive records and password files, the latter of which would explain how the group was able to commandeer so many Twitter accounts at once. There is already a Reddit thread devoted to piecing through the files. The attackers are threatening to release the full records at 6PM Eastern Time, after which we may know more.

In the meantime, the compromise seems to have brought day-to-day work at the studio to a crashing halt. Employees are reportedly unable to send email, use their computers, or even answer phones. As one employee told Deadline, "We are down, completely paralyzed." In the official statement, Sony used more measure language: "We are investigating an IT matter."
