Autism Speaks Urges Parents to Vaccinate Children

A well-known autism advocacy group, Autism Speaks, is urging parents to vaccinate their children amid a measles outbreak that has already reached 14 states and infected 102 people last month.

Rob Ring, chief science officer of Autism Speaks, released a statement today stressing that vaccines do not cause autism, and parents should vaccinate.

"Over the last two decades, extensive research has asked whether there is any link between childhood vaccinations and autism," he said in the statement. "The results of this research are clear: Vaccines do not cause autism. We urge that all children be fully vaccinated."

The myth began with a now-debunked 1998 study linking the MMR vaccine -- which protects against measles, mumps and rubella -- to autism. The British Medical Journal retracted the study in February 2010, and study author Andrew Wakefield lost his medical license.

An editorial published in the British Medical Journal following the retraction called Wakefield's study "fraudulent." Wakefield stood to gain money from his findings because he was involved in a lawsuit against the MMR vaccine, according to the journal. He denied any wrongdoing.

Another study purporting to show a link between the MMR vaccine and autism was published in a much smaller journal over the summer, spurring the #CDCwhistleblower hashtag and conversation. But it, too, was retracted. The journal said in a statement that the study author had "undeclared competing interests" and that the journal had "concerns" over the author's methods, analysis and conclusion.

Jupiter Triple-Moon Conjunction

Jupiter Triple-Moon Conjunction Our solar system's ruling giant planet Jupiter and 3 of its 4 large Galilean moons are captured in this single Hubble snapshot from January 24. Crossing in front of Jupiter's banded cloud tops Europa, Callisto, and Io are framed from lower left to upper right in a rare triple-moon conjunction. Distinguishable by colors alone icy Europa is almost white, Callisto's ancient cratered surface looks dark brown, and volcanic Io appears yellowish. The transiting moons and moon shadows can be identified by sliding your cursor over the image, or following this link. Remarkably, two small, inner Jovian moons, Amalthea and Thebe, along with their shadows, can also be found in the sharp Hubble view. The Galilean moons have diameters of 3,000 to 5,000 kilometers or so, comparable in size to Earth's moon. But odd-shaped Amalthea and Thebe are only about 260 and 100 kilometers across respectively.

I kinda vaguely feel like I should get a laptop, for traveling/surfing on the couch and whatnot... but I can't come up with any good reasons to actually buy one.

Greetings, Arsians! Courtesy of our partners at TechBargains, the Dealmaster is back! We've got a bunch of deals for you to look through today.

The top item is fresh out of CES: a Dell XPS 13 laptop with one of the smallest bezels ever fitted to a laptop screen. While it has a 13.3-inch, 1080p display, Dell has managed to cram it into something more comparable to the size of an 11-inch laptop. If you care about more than just the screen, it has a Core i5-5200U processor, 8GB of memory, and a 128GB SSD. At $899.99, you get $100 off the MSRP for this hot new laptop.

Peeing My Way Around New York City With Airpnp, The App For Bathroom Emergencies

Airpnp is the worst-designed app I’ve ever used. It’s also the most profound.

Justine Zwiebel/BuzzFeed News

My bladder is the Murphy's Law of organs.

It's not that it's small, exactly; rather, it's disagreeable; neurotic.

It conspires. In cahoots with some quietly disgruntled fold of my brain, the devil bag demands emptying only when it cannot be plausibly emptied. It is as if there is a tiny agoraphobe peering out at all times and the moment he senses he doesn't have a way out — at the movies, on the subway — he pulls the fire alarm.

It shouldn't have to be this way. Ours is an age of technological answers to material problems, deep ones, such as: cannot a person pay a nearby stranger a marginal fee to use his or her private bathroom when he is about to goshdang explode?

Finally, the answer to that question, which I admit to having pondered in desperate circumstances, is: "Yes!"

Allow me to suggest that Airpnp, the new crowdsourced bathroom emergency application, has the potential to dislodge a force far more entrenched than any taxi commission or hospitality industry, which is the power of government to legally forbid you from doing your business in public places, if you're not around a commode when the urge strikes. We live in a country where you can rent the entire history of music for the cost of a panini, but every day millions of citizens are obligated, by municipal law, to agonize silently, unable to do a thing that we literally need to do to not die.

What the hell?

Needing-to-piss stress is a first-order problem, and the fact that a tiny startup from New Orleans is just getting around to it in 2015 gives the lie to the idea that the big tech corps actually have "improving the human condition" high up on the dry-erase board when they're calculating which intractable knot to untie with Objective-C next. There is no lumbering Big Toilet to disrupt, as far as I know, no swirling profits to drain. There are simply devil bags to unburden and anxious minds to ease.

It was with this downright communitarian promise (in the world of startups, at least) in mind that last week I set out, after drinking 20 ounces of coffee and 20 ounces of water, to visit some of the Airpnp pioneers in New York City, where I live.

I wanted to figure out what had moved these early Pnpers to share their most private space with, potentially, 8 million other humans. I wanted to know how other actual New Yorkers' bathrooms compared to mine. And more than anything, I wanted a glimpse of the end of my cold war (mutually assured destruction has, to date, saved me from any accidental detonations) against my bladder.

Before going any further, I should mention that Airpnp is in many ways a terrible application. First, it seems obvious that it will be sued by Airbnb, which is currently getting lots of practice in the courts. Second, it doesn't have Airbnb's kind of geotracking, and it auto-loads New Orleans as its default location because Airpnp headquarters is in New Orleans. Every time. Third — at least in my experience — you have to log in each time you use it, almost as if the app cannot believe someone is taking it seriously. Fourth, Airpnp asks for your credit card number a little bit too often, like an intern wrote it down on a scrap of paper but forgot where he put it. Fifth, and this isn't quite Airpnp's fault, but there simply aren't very many toilets available to use in New York right now. As of this writing, I count 15 in Manhattan, six in Brooklyn, four in Queens, zero in the Bronx and Staten Island. Which makes sense, I guess, since Staten Island is pretty much one big toilet anyway.

The majority of the Airpnp listings in Manhattan are simply public restrooms. That's a useful service, but it already exists in the form of the entirely fine Charmin SitOrSquat app. Public bathrooms are fine, but I wanted to piss in someone's home. I decided to look in the two boroughs with private listings: Brooklyn, where I live, and Queens.

The first bathroom I tried to use was listed by a person in East Williamsburg named Haziq L., and it promised "a toilet, toilet paper, sink, and paper towels." Unfortunately for me, Haziq had set the single-use price of his bathroom at $1000.00, which felt like probably beyond the reasonable limits of the BuzzFeed News expense reimbursement policy (or, at the very least, only worth it in the event of a catastrophic number two).

Next, I tried a few places in Crown Heights, both of which were "unavailable," a vague term that did not clarify whether they were currently in strenuous use or nobody was home to host. Discouraged, and now starting to have to pee quite badly, I found a listing for a bathroom in Bedford-Stuyvesant for a comparatively reasonable $5:

THE SANDMAN Omnibus Silver Edition Now Available

by Shawn Depasquale
Philip.paulsson

Awesome. I want to visit the moonbase and swim in a pool up there! http://what-if.xkcd.com/124/

Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman is a must read for, well, for everyone. There are several printings of the many volumes in existence, but to celebrate the series’ 25th anniversary, DC Entertainment has announced the release of an epic The Sandman Omnibus Silver Edition.

This commemorative set comes in the form of a special slipcased edition that collects the entire groundbreaking series in two deluxe hardcover volumes and includes a page personally signed by Neil Gaiman.  Only 500 of these bad boys were printed, and each one is numbered, which explains the “ask-for-it-as-a-present” price of $499.95.

dc_sandman_landingpage_new01

If you’re Bruce Wayne, Tony Stark or some other millionaire playboy (or playgirl), you can order it for yourself here. They’re limiting purchases to one per person, but this is the Internet, and I promise someone will figure out a way to circumvent that, buy a bunch, and sell them for double on eBay, so act fast!

sandmantimes

In keeping with the theme of the post, please also direct your attention to the Times Square Jumbotron, where DC Entertainment has placed an easy-to-see commercial for The Sandman: Overture, drawn by J.H. Williams, III. The commercial (which is also running on TV) features art from the new series written by Gaiman, as well as appearances of fan-favorites Death, Mer-Pumpkinhead and The Sandman himself, Morpheus.

NASA just announced they'll be visiting this beautiful moon for the first time

Philip.paulsson

ATTEMPT NO LANDING THERE!

jupiter and europaNASA / JPL-CaltechEuropa floats in front of Jupiter.

The hunt for extraterrestrial life just grew a little hotter.

On Monday, during his "State of NASA" speech, administrator Charles Bolden announced that NASA will be selecting projects to accompany a probe to Jupiter's moon Europa.

Floating in space about 390 million miles from earth, Europa is a remote ice ball that harbors a massive ocean underneath its surface.

So massive, in fact, that scientists suspect Europa could have as much as two to three times more liquid water than Earth!

Judging from the abundance of life thriving in Earth's oceans: Where there's liquid water, there's the potential for life.

Not only that, Europa is absolutely gorgeous:

EuropaNASA/JPL-Caltech/SETI Institute
Europa is about 1,900 miles in diameter — slightly smaller than our moon. The brown veins that give the moon it's iconic beauty are still a mystery, but the leading theory is that they show where Europa's crust cracked open letting warmer, dirtier water seep through and then freeze.

Jupiter's strong gravitational tug on the tiny moon generates tidal forces that stretch the entire surface — similar to how the Moon's gravity tugs the water in Earth's oceans, creating tides. The stretching then cracks the crust letting water deeper beneath the surface to seap through.

But that's not the only impact the gas giant has on its moon. As NASA astrobiologist Kevin Hand explains in a video about Europa:

The reason that Europa has liquid water is because it's orbiting Jupiter and the tidal tug and pull causes Europa to flex up and down and all that tidal energy turns into friction and heat that helps maintain this liquid water ocean beneath and icy shell.

europaNASA
Below is a close up of the circular impact crater in the southern hemisphere in the image above. Called Pwyll, the impact crater is a relatively new feature on the surface of Europa, and it is also compelling evidence of the enormous ocean sloshing underneath the surface.

Scientists suspect that when the impactor hit, it splattered fresh, fine water ice particles everywhere that now show up as the bright-white arms adorning the moon's face around the darker crater. NASA's Galileo spacecraft — the only probe to flyby Europa more than once — took the image below in 1998. Showing the darker crater, which is about 16 miles in diameter.

europaNASA/JPL/University of Arizona
The impact crater's arms reach far across the surface. Even 620 miles north of the crater you can see evidence of the white streaks in the awesome close-up shot below.

The white and blue colors are the residual ice particles from the blast. Galileo snapped this photo of this region, which is 44 miles wide by 19 miles long, in 1996.

europaNASA/JPL/University of Arizona
Even though humans have never sent a probe to the surface of Europa, the beautiful moon has been a hot topic of interest for many years. And just last year, NASA issued a Request for Information to the scientific community to offer up their ideas on the best, economically viable approach to study this amazing moon.

Now, it looks like some of those ideas might have paid off as scientists look forward to learning more about the future mission to Europa this spring.

Twitter users expressed their excitement about the latest news:

Don't mind me, I'll just be over here doing a happy dance because THERE'S MONEY FOR A EUROPA MISSIOOOOON!!! #Geeked #StateOfNASA
