In Sunday's Copa America match against Peru he got past two defenders with an outrageous move. He kicks the ball over not one, but two defenders, twice! All while maintaining possession.

FYI, Copa America is a soccer tournament held every four years to determine the South American champion. Brazil won the game 2-1.

News in Brief: Guest Given Air Mattress That Will Slowly Deflate Throughout Night

PIERRE, SD—Saying he couldn’t wait to spend the entire night struggling to maintain a comfortable position, houseguest Adam Weaver reportedly told his friend and host, Luke Irving, Thursday that he was happy to have been given an air mattress that would slowly deflate throughout the night. “Thanks, I’m really excited to sleep on this partially inflated air bed that will gradually lose its shape over the course of the next eight hours,” said Weaver, noting that he was eager to try in vain to get some rest as he sinks progressively deeper into the collapsing mattress. “I just know that I’m going to get up tomorrow morning with nothing but a pile of crumpled vinyl between me and the hardwood floor, feeling refreshed, physically rejuvenated, and completely alert. This is going to be a real treat.” Weaver also voiced his pleasure at receiving a throw pillow ...

Article: LeBron James Clearly Expecting Cleveland-Area Deli To Give Him Free Sandwich

CLEVELAND—With the 11-time NBA All-Star making no move to take out his wallet after receiving his Reuben from the counter, sources at Earl’s East Side Market confirmed Thursday that Cavaliers forward LeBron James was clearly expecting the deli to give him the sandwich for free. “Thanks, guys—so, all set?” said James, who reportedly looked around at several deli employees before slowly taking a couple small steps toward the door. “Yeah...looks delicious, as always. Well, I gotta go get ready for the game tonight. Thanks again.” At press time, after another customer had gone up to the cashier to pay, James abruptly grabbed a small bag of chips and quickly walked out.

News in Brief: Embarrassed Snake Can’t Believe Documentary Crew Caught It Whiffing While Lunging At Toad

Philip.paulsson

I bet hanging out with the people who work at the Onion would be awesome.

LENOX, GA—Cringing at the thought of the embarrassing blunder being forever preserved on film, a local garter snake was reportedly humiliated Friday after a documentary crew caught footage of it completely whiffing while lunging at a toad. “Dammit, I almost never miss, but of course as soon as the cameras are rolling I totally botch it,” said the snake, bemoaning the fact that its rare misfire would now likely be seen by millions of people worldwide and possibly played multiple times in slow motion. “I bet when that thing airs they won’t even bother to mention the hundreds of other toads I’ve snagged throughout my lifetime. The other day, I plucked a mouse right off a log. Where were those cameras then?” At press time, the predatory reptile reportedly expressed additional frustration when the documentary crew managed to record it striking out big time with a female ...

SteamVR: The room-scale VR world that feels like an “IMAX in your house”

by Sam Machkovech
Philip.paulsson

Ok this sounds awesome. I was excited about VR before, but what they've done here sounds amazing.

BELLEVUE, WASHINGTON—When I first arrived at Valve Software's headquarters, all I wanted to do was take photos of things I could see in front of me, at which point I learned what I was not allowed to photograph.

Take the video game studio's giant fitness facility, for starters. The full-service gym appears to take up approximately a third of a floor, and its main, outward-facing wall is covered in photos of the company's 13 dedicated personal trainers. My tour guide, the comfortably grumpy Chet Faliszek—the company's longtime game-script writer and PR face—mentioned issues with legal clearance of those photos. We moved along.

My Canon T3i also had to remain sheathed when we reached a room full of convention clutter, which included such detritus as boxed TVs, stands, cables, wires, and a giant tub full of Steam Controller shells. Same went for a wall covered in unreleased Dota 2 T-shirt designs that have been stapled up for staffers to preview and vote on; the most-liked ones will eventually be sold to fans.

Syfy to adapt and film Dan Simmons’ Hyperion as an “event series”

by Lee Hutchinson

According to a press release issued by NBC-owned Syfy, the cable channel has announced its intention to produce an "event series" (read: miniseries) adaptation of Dan Simmons’ 1989 sci-fi novel Hyperion.

Long regarded as a tentpole of modern science fiction, Hyperion starts out as a sci-fi take on The Canterbury Tales, featuring a main cast of seven characters brought together on a pilgrimage to the dwelling of an inscrutable killing machine called "The Shrike." The book is the first in a loose series, being followed by its direct sequel Fall of Hyperion, and then two other books set hundreds of years later, Endymion and Rise of Endymion. The series is collectively referred to as "The Hyperion Cantos."

"Set on the eve of Armageddon with the entire galaxy at war, Hyperion is the story of seven pilgrims who set forth on a voyage to seek the answers to the unsolved riddles of their lives," reads the press release. "Each carries a desperate hope and a terrible secret—while one may hold the fate of humanity in his hands."

Northerners Respond To Insults Surprisingly Different From Southerners

I wonder if they skipped Boston when they were picking "northerners".

Which part of the U.S. do you think is more aggressive?

The World Economic Forum recently released a report encouraging economists to develop a new understanding for human behavior.

Perhaps the most interesting piece in the article pointed to a chart that showed the physiological responses to insults by U.S. Northerners versus Southerners.

Perhaps the most interesting piece in the article pointed to a chart that showed the physiological responses to insults by U.S. Northerners versus Southerners.

The chart shows that when someone is slighted (or disrespected) they must stave off humiliation by punishing the insulter. The author points to, "a famous experiment in the U.S. examined the culture of honour by having the experimenters’ accomplice bump into subjects in a hallway and call them names."

Nisbett and Cohen (1996) / Via agenda.weforum.org

Maybe not so surprisingly, the study found that, "The insult caused a surge in hormones among subjects who were from the U.S. south but not those from the U.S. north (Nisbett and Cohen 1996 and Figure 1)."

The Girl That Met One Of Her Real-Life Doppelgängers Just Met Another And It's Perfect

Earlier this year, three friends in Ireland launched the Twin Strangers project. They had a bet to see who could find the closest look-a-like anywhere in the world. Niamh won and met her first doppelgänger, Karen.

Chipotle becomes the first major US restaurant chain to ditch GMOs

by Nathan Mattise
Philip.paulsson

Newsflash: All food has been genetically modified by humans

On Monday, Chipotle began only serving food that is free of genetically modified (GMO) ingredients. According to The New York Times, it's the first major chain to take such a policy.

“This is another step toward the visions we have of changing the way people think about and eat fast food,” Steve Ells, founder and co-CEO of Chipotle, told the Times. “Just because food is served fast doesn’t mean it has to be made with cheap raw ingredients, highly processed with preservatives and fillers and stabilizers and artificial colors and flavors.”

Chipotle has advocated against GMO food—or at least in favor of more GMO transparency—in the past. The Mexican grill chain started indicating what menu items included GMO ingredients in 2013, another first. And the Times notes Chipotle may be in a unique position to take such a hard stance given the grill's menu includes only 68 ingredients. For those items that appeared problematic—NYT notes more than 90 percent of US corn and soy can be categorized as GMO—Chipotle worked with farmers to increase production of alternatives. Flour tortillas proved to be the most difficult item to replace, but Chipotle now uses non-GMO canola oil to make them. It's a setup that costs more, but Chipotle told the paper it may raise prices slightly this year to account for the shift.

News in Brief: Automakers Ask Nation If It Still Wants That Handle Above Car Windows

Philip.paulsson

Yes! I like those handles.

NEW YORK—Emphasizing that it was no trouble to either keep them or do away with them entirely, the world’s automakers assembled Monday to ask the public if it still wanted that little handle above their car windows. “We’ve been putting these interior handles over your car windows for the past 50 years or so, and we just wanted to check to see if you’d like us to continue doing that,” said General Motors CEO Mary Barra, who appeared alongside the heads of major auto manufacturers such as Toyota, Ford, and Hyundai-Kia and stressed that while they personally thought the handles were a nice feature, it would not be a problem at all to discontinue them in future models. “People generally use them for hanging dry cleaning or grabbing during a sharp turn, but maybe you’d be perfectly happy without them. That’s fine with us ...

June 10th, 2015: Sorry I dissed you, vanilla! I mean, sorry GOD dissed you. We are two different people ha ha ha

Anyway before you freak out about beaver butt juice (it's called "castoreum") REST ASSURED it's not used in food as often as real vanilla, because to get it you have to milk the beaver's glands and who has time for that? NOT ME. ANYMORE. And we've got more vanilla infrastructure already built than we do beaver-milking infrastructure. While it can AND IS used in food it's actually used more often in perfume, but no surprises there because as I understand it perfume is mostly animal juice, just beavers and whales all the way down??
